The Shotgun 650 features a “neo-retro” design that combines Royal Enfield’s heritage with a modern appeal.

“It is a retro-futuristic interpretation of what a factory custom motorcycle with thoroughbred Royal Enfield DNA would look like,” said Siddhartha Lal, managing director and CEO of Royal Enfield’s parent company, Eicher Motors Ltd. “A shape-shifting machine that defies categorization, both in form and in spirit, the Shotgun 650 is something absolutely new and different.”

The Shotgun 650 is powered by the 648cc parallel-Twin also found in the INT650, Continental GT, and Super Meteor 650. In the Shotgun, the engine produces a claimed 46.4 hp at 7,250 rpm and 38.6 lb-ft of torque at 5,650 rpm. The bike is said to weigh 529 lb wet, and its solo floating seat has a height of 31.3 inches. Wheelbase is 57.7 inches, rake is 25.3 degrees, and trail is 4 inches.

Braking comes in the form of single discs front (320mm) and rear (300mm) paired with twin-piston calipers, and ABS is standard. The bike rides on wide 18-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless tires.

Royal Enfield says the Shotgun 650 is designed to be a blank canvas on which the rider can inscribe their own personality and preferences. The bike features a modular design meant to encourage customization. A range of 31 Royal Enfield accessories are available from bar-end mirrors and a sculpted solo seat to contrast-cut billet rims. It can also be fitted with a passenger seat or luggage to fit the needs of the rider.

About the design of the Shotgun 650, Mark Wells, chief of design, said, “The story of Royal Enfield is one of customization. Our customers have been taking our motorcycles and personalizing them for decades. Looking to that rich creative culture for inspiration, we unleashed our designers to ideate in that same spirit of unfettered imagination.”

OUT NOW – ‘Jonathan Rea: Unrepeatable’

Several chapters closed at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto back in late October, but perhaps none as significant as the one concerning Jonathan Rea and the Kawasaki Racing Team. The Northern Irishman’s departure from the green team after nine seasons and six world titles marked a veritable end of an era for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. An era which is detailed and honoured in ‘Jonathan Rea: Unrepeatable’, a special long feature now available to watch here. Nine years of excellence told in detail, featuring exclusive interviews, archive footage and much more.

A JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER

Monday, November 3rd, 2014, just a few hours removed from a particularly tempestuous season finale, Kawasaki’s PR team quietly confirmed a story that had been brewing for several months. A young Northern Irishman by the name of Jonathan Rea, with 15 WorldSBK race wins to his name, would be joining the Barcelona-based team from that winter onwards, to partner 2013 Champion and perpetual championship contender Tom Sykes. A few days later, he would already be testing with the green team.

To state that this may be, with the benefit of hindsight, the most consequential signing in the history of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship might even be an understatement. No partnership in 35 years of WorldSBK racing has achieved the level of success that Rea, Kawasaki and the Provec Racing crew have. Before 2015, no single rider had won consecutive titles in the 21st century; Rea and KRT went on to win six. No rider had reached 60 race wins over their entire career; Rea and KRT’s tally together exceeds 100. As the competition grew tougher, the green ‘dream team’ grew stronger and even more resilient.

A LEGACY RESPECTED BY FRIENDS AND RIVALS ALIKE

The people who lived through these heights – and the inevitable lows – are ever-present throughout this documentary, with team manager Guim Roda and trusted crew chief Pere Riba amongst the key interviewees. Key title rivals also share their thoughts, from old foes like Chaz Davies to the two other members of the famous ‘Titanic Trio’, Alvaro Bautista and Toprak Razgatlioglu.

Rea’s decision to leave the squad at the end of 2023, one of “the hardest decisions” of his career, opens a new chapter for both sides of the equation. In one key moment of ‘Unrepeatable’, key personnel from both Kawasaki and Yamaha open up on the motivation and process of switching from green to blue – a heart-breaking decision for one side, an unbelievable opportunity for the other.

But the centrepiece of this feature are the words of the 6-time World Champion and WorldSBK legend himself, as he takes one final look back at a legendary period in Superbike history over multiple interviews conducted in the weeks after his departure was confirmed. The ‘Yamaha era’ may well take Rea to new heights – “the best is yet to come”, to quote the man himself – but it’s these nine era-defining seasons which have etched Team #65 and Kawasaki into the minds and hearts of Superbike fans around the world, as well as amongst themselves. Or as Rea succinctly puts it: “there will always be part of my blood that’s green”.

National Cycle SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release Motorcycle Windshield | Gear Review

National Cycle SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release Motorcycle Windshield
Gotta love that crystal-clear view through the SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release motorcycle windshield from National Cycle.

When I’m on my cruiser, I like the feel of air passing over me while riding backroads, but in the colder months – or when I’m on the interstate, which has a speed limit of 80 mph where I live – a windshield offers a pleasant reprieve that lets me enjoy other aspects of riding. My wife appreciates it too.

The factory windshield on my 2004 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail was starting to yellow and haze, which can be a serious problem when riding toward the setting sun. It also had some pitting, not to mention a few unsightly scratches from an incident I’m too embarrassed to relate. The scratches weren’t directly in my line of vision, but they were still right up front, detracting from an otherwise nearly flawless 20-year-old bike. So I was excited when I discovered National Cycle made a replacement.

Related: A Tale of Two Brothers and a Deal for a Harley-Davidson

But let’s be clear (pun entirely intended), the SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release Windshield is more than just a replacement; it’s a step up. National Cycle has had various SwitchBlades in its lineup – including the shorter Chopped windshield – for about as long as my bike has been around. The 2-Up matches the dimensions of my stock windshield and, as the name implies, provides good wind protection for both rider and passenger.

The 2-Up is constructed of 4mm polycarbonate with National Cycle’s exclusive Quantum hardcoating for scratch resistance. In a Taber abrasion test, the Quantum hardcoating measured 10 times more abrasion resistant than FMR hardcoated polycarbonate and 33 times more than acrylic. National Cycle also claims Quantum offers 2.5 times more UV protection than FMR.

The difference in visibility between my old windshield and the SwitchBlade 2-Up (MSRP $409.95 with a three-year warranty against breakage) was immediately apparent and pleasing. Installation of the hardware ($110.95, sold separately and model-specific) was quick and easy, but I recommend saving your old hardware. The windshield installation directions specify that a “slight flexing” of the shield might be required to get the lower notches on the lower spools, but I couldn’t bend the shield enough before getting blocked by the stock light bar, so I had to use a couple of my old washers for the lower spools. Even then, I had to loosen the top lights on the bar to squeeze the shield over the main nacelle and between the light bar and the fork.

National Cycle SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release Motorcycle Windshield
I’m a packrat when it comes to hardware anyway, and in this case, with such a tight fit, I was glad I saved the washers from my original windshield setup.

After making these accommodations, the windshield now pops on and off without any problems. I love the completely unencumbered view from behind the handlebar of a cruiser, but the SwitchBlade 2-Up Quick Release Windshield allows me to choose the wind protection when I want it, combined with a crystal-clear view that should last for another 20 years.

GREGORIO LAVILLA: “One of the key values for WorldSBK is fan engagement”

Speaking on the occasion, Gregorio Lavilla, WorldSBK Executive Director, said: “As we gear up for the 2024 Pirelli Catalan Round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the collaboration between Dorna WSBK, GEMOCAT, and the Circuit marks a strategic alliance to elevate the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship experience. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, deeply rooted in the motorsport heritage of the region, plays a pivotal role in offering a stunning setting to showcase WorldSBK.

“Beyond the thrilling on-track action, one of the key values for WorldSBK is fan engagement. We are proud to offer a plethora of activities for fans, ensuring an immersive experience. The access granted to fans exemplifies our commitment to fostering a strong connection between our audience with the sport. The Superbikes Barcelona Motorfest, with its family-friendly atmosphere, will encapsulate not only the spirit of competition but also a celebration of motor racing. We look forward to welcoming enthusiasts from around the world to this event and delivering an unforgettable experience that goes beyond the races.”

“I HAD NEVER SEEN AS MANY PEOPLE AS I DID IN JEREZ”

Tito Rabat, who this past 2023 season competed with the Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team, commented: “The Championship is growing, and you can see that in the circuits. I had never seen as many people as I did in Jerez. It’s true that WorldSBK is more popular in countries like the United Kingdom and France, but everyone is working well to allow it to keep growing. The WorldSBK approach is new for a lot of people who visit the circuits: they can follow the action closely, see if you’re happy or angry after the race, they can see to the winning bike… Everything is much closer. And the grid keeps getting closer, that has given us some beautiful races.”

China Racing Team rider and 2017 WorldSSP300 Champion Marc García echoed those thoughts: “Since I arrived in 2017, the Championship hasn’t stopped growing, in terms of competitiveness, attendance… The Paddock Show is key for this. When I was younger, I really struggled to get pictures with riders, whereas now fans can even join in on the celebrations with their favourite riders and teams. That builds a bond. My friends don’t understand much about motorbike racing, but every time they come to the Circuit they love it so much that they can’t wait to come back.”

Guim Roda, Team Manager for the Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK, concluded: “As a team based in Granollers [close the to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya], an event like the Superbikes Barcelona Motorfest is very important for us. We think this is good, not only for the Kawasaki Racing Team but also for all of the technical suppliers around us, most of them based in Catalonia, it will boost the industry and popularise the motor world. We are delighted to help with the promotion of the event and to promote the use of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and to help make the Superbikes Barcelona Motorfest a reference at both a local and international level.

Backcountry Discovery Routes Announces Economic Impact of BDR Routes

Continuing in their mission of responsibly creating off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel, the nonprofit Backcountry Discovery Routes organization has released its 2023 Economic Impact Study white paper, which reports more than $60 million dollars in boosts to local economies in proximity to BDR routes. Of particular interest was the impact on smaller rural communities, where the increase in tourism dollars has helped offset declines in other industries such as mining or forestry. For more information, read the press release below.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

SEATTLE – Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), the nonprofit organization dedicated to developing adventure riding opportunities across the U.S., just released its comprehensive Economic Impact Study white paper.  The report underscores the role played by BDR riders in bolstering local economies, with BDR-related spending creating an annual economic impact of over $60 million across all BDR routes.

To access the complete economic impact study white paper and learn more about Backcountry Discovery Routes, visit the Economic Impact Study page on the BDR website.

Conducted in partnership with the University of Wyoming’s Center for Business and Economic Analysis (CBEA), the study examined visitor spending patterns among motorcyclists traveling on BDR routes. Key findings were derived from economic impact calculations, utilizing state-specific multipliers, industry-specific margins, estimates of out-of-state visitors, and average spending per industry and state.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

One of the standout conclusions from the study is the substantial positive impact BDR has on small rural communities. As the organization continues to create new BDR routes, it brings a surge of economic activity to these areas in the form of tourism. The influx of commerce extends to various sectors, including hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, parks, and more. Many of these rural communities have faced economic challenges due to declines in traditional industries such as mining and forestry, and BDR’s initiatives have proven to be an important source of new tourism revenue for these remote local economies.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

Inna Thorn, executive director at Backcountry Discovery Routes, said that many states are looking for new outdoor recreation opportunities to help diversify their economies and bring new tourism dollars to local communities.

“This economic impact study underscores the substantial positive influence BDR has on the communities we travel through,” she said. “More than just an advocate for off-highway motorcycling, BDR is a catalyst for economic growth in rural communities along our routes. As we continue to expand our network of routes, we are committed to making a lasting and positive difference in these communities, while educating our riders about safe and respectful travel on public lands and in local communities.”

In addition, BDR efforts are also growing the sport by creating new adventure riders and driving motorcycle sales. The study found that BDR riders generated $9.6 million in motorcycle sales in 2022. BDR riders are not just buying motorcycles, they are also spending significant dollars on related products and services to prepare for a BDR ride.

Backcountry Discovery Routes BDR

BDR invites all interested parties, including policymakers, local officials, and motorcycling enthusiasts, to explore the full economic impact study white paper. By understanding the tangible benefits that BDR routes bring to rural areas, communities and stakeholders can work together to harness the potential for sustainable growth and development of adventure motorcycle tourism.

About Backcountry Discovery Routes

Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that creates off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel. The organization’s work includes promoting rider education and safety campaigns, driving economic relief to rural communities, and encouraging responsible motorcycle travel in the backcountry. Through the careful investment of funds and working with land managers and other public benefit organizations, BDR seeks to keep remote public roads open for motorcycling for generations to come.

BDR delivers turn-key trip planning resources to the community including GPS tracks, digital maps, travel information, route condition updates, YouTube videos, Q&As, and other information – all available 24/7 on the Backcountry Discovery Routes website. The organization relies on the generosity of donors and a team of volunteers and ambassadors who contribute thousands of hours each year to help carry out this mission.

Since 2010, BDR has created routes in Washington, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, the Mid-Atlantic region, Southern California, the North-East region, Wyoming, and Oregon and the soon-to-be-released Northern, California project. In 2022, BDR introduced a new concept of shorter, BDR-style routes that loop called BDR-X. Current BDR-X routes include Red Desert, Wyoming; PA Wilds, Pennsylvania; Steens Mountain & Alvord Desert, Oregon; and now the Black Hills, South Dakota.
