8 Hours of Oschersleben cancelled | EWC now four rounds

2021 FIM Endurance World Championship

The 8 Hours of Oschersleben has been cancelled, after the initial postponement due to COVID restrictions in Germany, from original the May 23 date.

Since then, the FIM, Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, Eurosport Events, the promoter of the FIM EWC, and the organisers of the race in Germany have been working together to reschedule the 8 Hours of Oschersleben on the 2021 calendar.

H Oschersleben FCC TSR Honda France
8 Hours of Oschersleben dropped from 2021 FIM EWC calendar

Their priority was to offer teams a new calendar compatible with their logistical organisation, which would take into account the other date changes, of the 24 Heures Motos (12 and 13 June) and the 12 Hours of Estoril (17 July), as well as the organization of the Bol d’Or on 18 and 19 September and the Suzuka 8 Hours on 7 November.

The other priority was to find a date that would give the event the most international visibility after the end of the Tokyo Olympic Games. In light of these requirements, the only suitable date was mid-August.

Despite these joint efforts, unfortunately the Oschersleben circuit was unable to cancel its previously undertaken commitments for that date. As a result, the 8 Hours of Oschersleben will not take place during the 2021 FIM EWC season.

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events

“We genuinely regret being unable to include the 8 Hours of Oschersleben on the 2021 calendar. Oschersleben has been part of the FIM EWC races since 1999. It is also an important race for German and East European teams, of which an ever-increasing number are entering the championship.”

12 Hours of Estoril

Jorge Viegas, FIM President

“Despite the fact we could not find an alternative date for the traditional 8 Hours of Oschersleben, we look forward to welcoming back this race next year. In the meantime, the remainder of the 2021 FIM EWC calendar will be run as is planned, but keeping in mind that we must maintain flexibility until we are over with the pandemic. We sincerely thanks everyone involve for the continuous efforts. Please stay strong!”

Zarco fastest in Warm Up blighted by crashes

Having already saved a front-end fall at the final corner, whilst being followed by younger brother Alex Marquez (LCR Castrol Honda), Marc Marquez’s RC213V eventually did let go, this time at Turn 4. The scene of his epic save in the early stages of the 2020 Spanish GP, the eight-time World Champion wasn’t able to save it on his elbow on this occasion as the front washed away without warning, sending him flying into the air fence at some speed once again. Fortunately, he was okay following the incident but visibly fizzing with rage.

Cooper Webb crowned 2021 AMA Supercross Champion

Cooper Webb
2021 AMA Supercross Champion

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb had an incredible conclusion to the 2021 AMA Supercross Championship, clinching his second-career 450SX title with a dominant victory at Saturday’s season finale. Marvin Musquin furthered the remarkable night for the team as he delivered a strong runner-up performance to give Red Bull KTM back-to-back 1-2 sweeps in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Widely recognized for his grit and determination to win, Webb has overcome his share of adversity since earning his first 450SX title in 2019. As the 2020 runner-up in supercross, Webb missed most of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship due to a back injury and he even had a rocky start to 2021 with a ninth-place finish at the opening round. However, in true champion’s form Webb spent the early part of the season chipping away at the points gap, setting himself up for a massive comeback in the second half of the series. He entered the final round with a comfortable 22-point advantage over Ken Roczen but that didn’t stop him from pressing the envelope when it came time for the gate to drop at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

With a second-place finish in 450SX Heat 2, the newly crowned champion shot off the line aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, positioning himself into second early on. He pressured Roczen heavily through the first five laps before losing a spot to third early on. He didn’t let up though, eventually overtaking Roczen, and then Chase Sexton, to move into the lead with seven laps to go. From there, he marched to the checkers scoring his eighth Main Event victory of the season.

Cooper Webb

It’s been a heck of a year with everything in the world going on but we dug deep this year and stayed the course. It’s been an incredible journey, a hard fought season with a lot of hard races but this is all worth it right here. Being a two-time champion is incredible and to get the win tonight is the cherry on top. I’m speechless, this is incredible.”

Cooper Webb
2021 AMA Supercross Champion

Ian Harrison – Red Bull KTM Team Manager

This season I think was Cooper’s strongest season – he got his most wins and the competition was really stiff from Honda and Kawasaki but he just fought his way through there. What a fighter, he was exceptionally strong at the end of all the races and he put up a battle with so many guys on the last lap and came out victorious many times. Once we got to Round 4, he really found his groove and then he took command of the points lead around the middle mark of the season and there was no looking back. It was truly an amazing season and it was awesome to be a part of it. Our team, everybody involved, they all did exactly what they needed to and more and we delivered, so I’m super happy.

Roger De Coster – Director of KTM Motorsports, North America

There have been many great champions over the years but when it comes to race craft and the really deep desire to win, Cooper is special and he ranks at the very top. Even when it was not necessary to win today – he could have just rode around and 18th would have been sufficient – but he decided he wanted to win the race and it was very impressive how he ended the season. The guy has so much heart, he keeps impressing me time after time and I’m really thankful for that.

“I’m also thankful for the people that make this possible because of course the rider is the biggest factor in this sport by a long margin but there are a lot of people that make this possible also that have influence and make a difference in getting there. Especially the people in Austria, also Slovenia with Akrapovic and then all the people in the U.S. like WP suspension, Carlos and so many other people that have something to do with this championship. I’m just thankful to still be a part of it and witness this awesome racing.”

Moto2™ Warm Up: Di Giannantonio P1 in red-flagged session

With just under 11 minutes of the session to go, Celestino Vietti’s (SKY Racing Team VR46) rapid Turn 7 crash caused the air fence to be damaged and because of that, the red flags were waved in order for repairs to be made. The Italian was thankfully unscathed and the riders were back on track a few minutes later, with Jake Dixon (Petronas Sprinta Racing) then going down at Turn 7. The British rider was on his feet but headed to the medical centre for a check-up.

Tech3 sign new five-year agreement with KTM

“For sure 2020 is still in our memory; Tech3 KTM won two races, KTM altogether won three races, but I believe the best is yet to come. We share the same values, the same target, which is never giving up and ready to race. So now that this deal is done, signed, confirmed, let’s work even harder on the 2021 season and of course let’s think how to be best prepared for our new contract that starts in 2022. I really believe this organization has all the ingredients to be winning and it’s just up to us to put all the pieces together to make it work and chase the victory at every single round.”

Webb takes 450SX championship with dominant win

Nichols, Cooper crowned as Lawrence wins 250SX Showdown.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb scored a dominant victory at the final round of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross season in Salt Lake City to take his second 450SX championship.

After getting a great start in the main event, Webb found himself behind his championship rival Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) and locked in a battle with Roczen’s teammate Chase Sexton.

Sexton and Webb went back and forth for the opening laps, allowing Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) to get in on the action as followed the pack in fourth, all the while Roczen stretched out to a bit of a lead at the front.

Sexton broke away from the Red Bull KTM duo, running down his teammate and taking the lead with 14 minutes to go in the race and stretched out a four-second lead over the next few laps. Roczen then came under siege from the charging Red Bull KTM’s.

With 10 minutes to go, Webb pulled the trigger on an aggressive pass to take second from Roczen, allowing Musquin past in the process. Roczen dropped down the order shortly thereafter,  eventually finishing in 10th on the night, securing second in the championship.

Webb proved he was not to be denied, running Sexton down with four minutes to go, making the pass after a bobble from Sexton that also allowed Musquin through for an eventual Red Bull KTM 1-2 finish.

Sexton brought it home in third, notching another podium in what was an impressive rookie season in the premier class despite some crashes and subsequent injuries. His finish also locked up the manufacturer’s championship for Team Honda HRC.

Fourth went to newly crowned 2021 450SX rookie of the year Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha), with his teammate Malcolm Stewart finishing just behind him rounding out the top five.

Joey Savatgy wrapped up his season with an impressive sixth-place result aboard his Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM, taking his best finish of the season in the final race. Justin Barcia (TLD Red Bull GasGas) battled hard for seventh, making plenty of aggressive moves throughout the race in typical BamBam fashion.

Eighth-place on the night went to Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) who battled inside the top five with his teammates for a good portion of the race.

Out-going champion Eli Tomac’s (Monster Energy Kawasaki) rough start did him little good in his last ride with the number one plate, as he found himself locked in a heated battle for seventh for most of the race.

Roczen’s bid for the championship ended with a 10th-place finish, the Team Honda HRC man dropping down the order after being passed by Webb, with Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) finding himself 11th on the night, missing out on his eighth straight top-10 after an impressive run in the back half of the season.

It was a wild night of racing in the 250SX East/West shootout for the conclusion the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross championship with Jett Lawrence putting his Team Honda HRC CRF250R on top of the box ahead of Colt Nichols and his brother Hunter Lawrence.

The final round of the 2021 championship saw the 250SX classes collide for the Dave Coombs Sr. 250SX Showdown at Rice-Eccles Stadium. After a day of overcast skies, the track came together nicely to create incredible racing for the final round.

With both championships on the line, Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammates Nichols and Justin Cooper came into the night needing few points to pick up their titles.

At the start of the main, it was all Nichols, taking a commanding holeshot over Seth Hammaker (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Jett Lawrence, the trio setting a solid pace out front for the opening five minutes of the race with Cooper maintaining down in eighth place.

Hunter Lawrence joined the party at the front, as the brothers began to pressure Hammaker for second. Jett eventually made the move and set out after Nichols, with Hunter hitting the ground attempting a pass just moments later.

As the laps wore down, Jett closed the gap to Nichols, making a pass stick and heading into the lead, while his older brother caught McAdoo for the final spot on the podium.

As Jett crossed the line for the showdown win with Nichols just behind, Hunter made a last-lap pass on McAdoo with just a half-lap to go to put brothers on a Supercross podium for the first time in history.

The headline of the night though went to the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammates of Nichols and Cooper, who brought home the 250SX East and West championships with second and ninth-place finishes, both taking career-first titles.

The trio of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s finished fourth through sixth on the evening, with McAdoo taking fourth, Hammaker in fifth, and Jo Shimoda grabbing fifth on the evening.

Seventh-place went to Pierce Brown (TLD Red Bull GasGas) who came out on top of a battle between eventual eighth-place finisher Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).

250SX West class champion Cooper, who rode a steady, trouble-free race with the championship clearly in mind, ahead of Kyle Peters who put his Phoenix Racing Honda in the final spot in the top 10.

Michael Mosiman (TLD Red Bull GasGas) took a dominant heat race win but hit the ground early in a first turn pile-up in the main event and would eventually finish the night in 15th.
