Czech MXGP victory for Febvre as Gajser extends points lead

Further dominance for defending MX2 champion Prado with double win.

Image: Supplied.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Romain Febvre made a welcomed return to the top step of the 2019 MXGP World Championship podium after dominating the Czech Grand Prix as the winner of both premoer class races.

Ending a three-year drought, the Frenchman went 1-1 to win the grand prix ahead of Tim Gajser (Team HRC), who extended his points lead with a pair of runner-up results. Second of the factory Yamahas, Jeremy Seewer, was third.

In the opening race of the weekend, the YZ450FM-mounted teammates Seewer and Febvre rocketed out of the gate and led around turn one. A frantic first lap saw Febvre made a pass for the lead and instantly pull a small gap, before he was flawless as he stormed to a second race victory of the season. Seewer was demoted to third by Gajser with three minutes left on the clock.

An incredible start to the second and final race of the day saw Seewer lead the chase while Febvre trailed, but it was the ‘461’ who did not mess around on the opening lap as he charged past everyone including Gajser to challenge his teammate for the lead.

After a thrilling four-lap battle for the top spot, Febvre managed out-brake Seewer and take claim of the position on one of the steep downhills. Gajser also applied the pressure and forced a pass on the Swiss talent a lap later, but could not catch the Febvre.

In MX2, defending world champion Jorge Prado conquered Loket for the second year in a row, going 1-1 for victory ahead of Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi and Thomas Kjer Olsen (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing).

Olsen’s teammate Jed Beaton also put in two strong races, charging to fourth in moto one. A little further down the field at the end of the opening lap in the second moto, Beaton worked hard throughout the race to improve from 13th to his eventual finishing position of ninth. That placed him sixth overall, while countryman Mitch Evans (Team 114 Motorsports Honda) sat out the weekend.

The third round of Women’s Motocross World Championship also took place, where Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan won the round of Czech Republic with a perfect 1-1 score. The New Zealander also extended her lead in the championship to 14 points. Second overall was Larissa Papenmeier (Yamaha) with 4-2 results, and while Nancy Van De Ven (Yamaha) went 2-4 to complete the podium.

Next on the 2019 MXGP World Championship schedule will be the Lommel, Belgium, round this weekend on 4 August.

Kawasaki Racing Team conquers drama-packed Suzuka 8 Hours

News 29 Jul 2019

EWC goes down to the wire as Team SRC Kawasaki France clinches the crown.

Image: Supplied.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam claimed the most dramatic of victories in the 2019 Coca-Cola Suzuka 8-Hours, as Team SRC Kawasaki France clinched its first Endurance World Championship (EWC) crown.

Having made their Le Mans-style start from second place on the grid, the early action in the race was incredibly tight, with KRT third after the first hour – at which point five different teams were covered by just 0.795 seconds.

The KRT riders led after four hours, after five, then six and again at the seven hour point. As Haslam struggled with recent injuries in the final laps of his riding stints four-time World Superbike champion Rea re-took the lead in the final hour and looked destined to secure the win for KRT.

In an unbelievable turn of events, Rea arrived on the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team’s oil spill in the gloomy and damp conditions that arrived just as the daylight was exhausted. He fell, blamelessly, but was unable to restart. At that stage the dream of a famous race victory seemed gone and the official Yamaha team were initially declared winners after a red flag was thrown.

Despite missing out on the initial podium ceremony and, after a long period of time, the results were amended by the race organisers to put the number 10 Kawasaki back on top. In the final reckoning, KRT won the race by 18.720 seconds from Yamaha Factory Racing’s Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark and Red Bull Honda riders Takumi Takahashi and Stefan Bradl – all three teams finishing on the same lap total of 216.

Even before the final race classification was determined, the number 11 Team SRC Kawasaki France entry of Jeremy Guarnoni, Erwan Nigon and David Checa had already won the EWC title after the mechanical of Suzuki Endurance Racing Team in the closing laps. In the end, 12th was enough for SRC Kawasaki – following a mishap of their own – to capture the championship.

F.C.C TSR Honda France, led by Australia’s Josh Hook, scored fourth position in the race after Hook led his share in the opening hour. That result secured the outgoing world champions with third in the final EWC standings. Countryman Broc Parkes’ YART Yamaha squad was sixth on Sunday and fifth in points.

Reigning Australian champion Troy Herfoss was solid with the KYB Moriwaki Racing Honda outfit on their way to ninth place in Japan and Aaron Morris (Team R2CL Suzuki) was 22nd, while Josh Waters (Moto Map SWAT Suzuki) was 27th overall and fourth of the Superstock entries despite a costly fall in the first stint.

Musquin breaks through in Pro Motocross at WW Ranch

First professional win for Cooper in 250 Class as Lawrence lands top five.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin was victorious at WW Ranch Motocross Park in Florida for round five of the 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

Musquin went 1-3 to secure the overall ahead of points-leader Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki), with Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) third.

In moto one Musquin was dominant to his first moto win since the 10th round at Unadilla last August, crossing the line 7.7 seconds ahead of Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC), with Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) right behind in third.

No doubt disappointed in his first moto effort, Tomac seized the moment to start moto two and took his first holeshot of the season. With a clear track ahead of him Tomac sprinted in the opening stages in an effort to build a margin that he could manage as the moto continued.

Anderson applied pressure on Osborne and made an impressive pass to take over second. Osborne attempted to fight back, but to no avail. Tomac needed just over a lap to storm out to nearly a five-second lead, which left everyone else to battle for the remaining spots on the podium.

Anderson gave chase from second, while Osborne was left to deal with Musquin for third. The rookie held off his training partner for a while, but the Frenchman utilised alternate lines to make the pass and move into third.

However, the big-picture battle in the championship changed after Roczen went down while running fifth. Roczen and Tomac entered the race tied atop the point standings, but Roczen began the second moto with the upper-hand. He remounted in seventh, but continued to lose positions and ultimately took 10th.

Tomac managed a perfect moto to take his fifth chequered flag of the season, 4.1 seconds ahead of Osborne, while Musquin held on for third and Australia’s Dean Ferris (Monster Energy Yamaha) went 10-7 for eighth overall. It’s Tomac who holds a six-point lead in the 450 Class standings over Roczen.

Monster Energy/Star/Yamaha Racing’s Justin Cooper emerged to take the first professional win of his career in the 250 Class, going 2-2 for the overall ahead of teammate Dylan Ferrandis and championship leader Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki).

Geico Honda’s Chase Sexton won the opening moto, however, he pulled off into the mechanics area and eventually retired from the race later in the afternoon, ending his hopes of a first career win. Australian teammate Hunter Lawrence took fifth overall via 3-5 scores.

Despite seeing his win streak come to an end, Cianciarulo still has a firm hold on the championship point lead, where he sits 18 points ahead of Cooper. Ferrandis is third, 35 points out of the lead.

The 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will reach its halfway point next Saturday, 29 June, with the Southwick national in Massachusetts.
