Phillip Island MotoGP Full Schedule | Support Entry Lists

MotoGP’s mid-point on the three-week back-to-back tour around the Pacific Rim sees MotoGP in our backyard this weekend at Phillip Island for the Pramac Generac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Joining the stars of MotoGP will be two support classes for local competitors, however almost the entire regular ASBK Superbike grid are choosing to sit the event out.

There are no points on offer, the ASBK finale is the following weekend after MotoGP, and finding the extra ten grand (at least that for a major team – probably a quarter of that for a base privateer), to do the MotoGP round, after already trying to find enough budget for a seven-round ASBK Championship, just doesn’t add up for most.

Two of the regular ASBK front runners on the grid will be Penrite Honda’s Troy Herfoss and Mark Chiodo.

NextGen BMW have entered Glenn Allerton who will use the MotoGP round to shake down the new BMW S 1000 RR.

DesmoSport Ducati understandably seem to have elected to keep Mike Jones out of harms way ahead of the ASBK Superbike finale, but fronting up on their new V4R will be none other than Troy Bayliss.

Jed Metcher and Ryan Taylor are capable of maybe springing a surprise on some of the Superbike front runners.

The Supersport 300 ranks are also quite slim compared to a regular ASBK round.

All this of course means that ASBK is hardly putting its best foot forward as a shop-window into the series in front of what will likely be a very healthy MotoGP crowd. Not their fault really, it’s just economics….

Perth ASBK return confirmed alongside Supercars

Perth ASBK return confirmed alongside Supercars

ASBK heading to Western Australia in May 2020 alongside auto racing series.

Barbagallo Raceway in Perth has been named as the venue that the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) will feature at alongside the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2020.

The Pirtek Perth SuperNight, scheduled for 15-17 May 2020, will offer up a day/night schedule, while marking the return of ASBK in Western Australia following a four-year hiatus.

It was revealed in August that the ASBK would support the Supercars program at a then to be determined venue, the two championships running alongside each other most previously in 2013.

“Combining two championship events such as Supercars and ASBK is an exciting endeavour and requires a great deal of coordination,” said Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle.

“I’d like to thank all those who helped bring it together and I’m really looking forward to seeing all the action in WA next year.

“The Barbagallo Wanneroo circuit has always been well-attended for both two and four-wheeled motorsport events, Western Australia is a highly important region for Motorcycling Australia, the motorcycle industry and ASBK partners, so it’s great to bring the nation’s fastest riders back to WA in front of a big and enthusiastic audience of race fans.”

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer added: “It’s great to be doing an event with the ASBK championship. We look forward to working with them in Perth to put on an amazing show for fans of both two and four-wheels.”

Further details on the event are expected to be released in the early stages of 2020.

Kawasaki Z H2 | The Z line has a new head honcho for 2020

Kawasaki Z H LHS
2020 Kawasaki Z H2

Kawasaki had hinted that more supercharged machines would be on the way and most pundits had predicted that forced induction would soon be appearing on lower capacity machines, and perhaps not remain the domain of the more premium H2 and H2R machines.

Kawasaki Z H Stripped
The 2020 Kawasaki Z H2 features an eye-catching high tensile steel trellis frame

Today Kawasaki released the new Z H2, not a lower capacity model, but perhaps the Z H2 will lower the entry price for those yearning for some supercharged goodness.

Kawasaki Z H Top
Kawasaki also make note of the asymmetric intake design on the Z H2

Pricing is yet to be announced and the lower entry point is only our speculation but it seems likely. The Z H2 is set to arrive in Australia sometime early in 2020.

Kawasaki Z H RHR
2020 Kawasaki Z H2

The new bike boasts just under 200 horsepower from its supercharged 998cc in-line four-cylinder engine but of course boost is all about torque and here the numbers are more impressive, 137 Nm at 8500 rpm to be precise.

Kawasaki Z H Engine
Kawasaki are claiming 147.1kW of peak power on the Z H2

Kawasaki could obviously pushed those numbers lower down in the rev range but seemingly tuned the bike for ease of use.

Kawasaki Z H Engine
Torque is also an impressive 137 Nm on the 2020 Kawasaki Z H2

As you would expect it comes with a full suite of electronic safety and assist systems with IMU driven multi-level traction control and ABS along with riding modes, quick shifter, launch and cruise control.

Kawasaki Z H Bars
An extensive electronics system is found on the Z H2 including KTRC, KLM, Ride and Power modes, RBW, a Bosch IMU and more

Smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth is also integrated into a colour TFT display and all lighting is LED.

Kawasaki Z H Dash
The 2020 Kawasaki Z H2 is also adorned by a full colour TFT LCD display

The new high-tensile steel trellis frame uses Showa components front and rear to suspend the 239 kg (wet) Z H2. Preload and damping adjustable SFF-BP forks look after the front.

Kawasaki Z H Front
Lighting on the 2020 Kawasaki Z H2 will be full LED except in the USA

Brembo supplies monobloc radial M4.32 calipers while the master-cylinder is sourced from Nissin.

Kawasaki Z H Brakes
Brembo M4.32 monobloc calipers are also featured on the Z H2

The riding position has been designed to off a more upright and relaxed rider triangle in comparison to its H2 siblings, keeping with the thinking behind the entire Z line up of Kawasaki machines.

Kawasaki Z H Cockpit
2020 Kawasaki Z H2

Forced induction requires lower tension piston rings thus the casting processes are more exact than generally used and the bores are honed with a dummy head in place, normally only seen in blueprinted engines.

Kawasaki Z H Swingarm
New Uni Trak rear suspension is also found on the 2020 Kawasaki Z H2

As per all of Kawasaki’s supercharged machines, no intercooler is fitted and the supercharger does not have its own oil circuit, instead it combines with the overall lubrication system of the engine. No doubt due to packaging concerns, it’s not a car after all…. A liquid-cooled oil cooler is present though to help keep temperatures under control along with radiator shrouds carefully designed to manage air-flow. The trellis frame also plays its part in helping the engine shed heat.

Kawasaki Z H Tank
2020 Kawasaki Z H2

With Euro 5 emissions restrictions in mind a new exhaust system has been designed with a large catalytic converter but by doing away with the normal pre-muffler Kawasaki look to have done a great job of packaging that under the machine.

Kawasaki Z H Stripped
The exhaust on the 2020 Kawasaki Z H2 has been optimised at the collector but still features a large muffler

The trade off is quite a large muffler, but I favour that over some of the monstrosities now seen hanging under many modern machines that look crap in the showroom even before they get dirty, which is when they really start to look like shit. That Kawasaki manage to package a supercharger in the Z H2, AND manage to route the exhaust system smartly is some feat, kudos to them on that score.

Kawasaki Z H Muffler
The Z H2 muffler won’t win any accolades but Euro 5 dictated the design

The trademark modern Z bike proboscis around the headlight area aside, its also a pretty good looking machine.

What will be the next supercharged package to come from Kawasaki…?

ASBK Superbikes are back in WA for 2020

The two championships will join forces at the iconic Barbagallo Raceway, which also sets the stage for the ASBK’s first appearance at the Western Australian venue since 2016.

The undulating 2.411km layout has always produced fantastic racing for both championships and has never failed to draw a passionate WA crowd and fans from across the country. Now with the National Superbike Class supporting the Supercars day/night format, this motorsport spectacular is not to be missed.

After working on the two-plus-four format for some time, Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle is pleased to see the partnership with Supercars cemented for 2020.

Possible Australian MXGP round remains a work in progress

Possible Australian MXGP round remains a work in progress

Target deferred to 2021 for world championship return in Australia.

Image: Supplied.

Plans for the MXGP World Championship to visit Australia are still a work in progress following speculation earlier this year, despite the country missing out on a spot on the 2020 calendar.

The official 2020 MXGP schedule was released last week, although Australia was evidently absent from the 20-event calendar after it was revealed in March that Dirt High Promotions’ Willie Thompson, promoter of the Manjimup 15,000, was working on bringing the world championship to Western Australia next season.

While unable to make an official comment on the state of an Australian grand prix when contacted by MotoOnline.com.au, Thompson did indicate he’s continuing to pursue the endeavour, with the goal now deferred to 2021.

It’s understood hosting a round of the MXGP requires significant funding that could only feasibly be provided by the government, which is currently proving to be a major hurdle for the parties involved. The WA government has previously supported global motorsport events, including both the World Rally Championship and Red Bull Air Race – both of which are no longer held in the state.

The MXGP World Championship will travel all across Europe in 2020, along with visiting Argentina, Indonesia, China and Turkey.

Allerton samples BMW S 1000RR ahead of Australian GP debut

Maxima BMW’s Glenn Allerton has had his first taste of the new 2019 S 1000RR ahead of debuting the model in the Superbike support class at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix this weekend.

Allerton tested the premier class contender at Winton in Victoria this week, where he was able to establish a base setting before visiting Phillip Island.

The 2019 S 1000RR marks the third generation of the German manufacturer’s superbike, boasting a newly-developed engine and updated suspension, along with a significant reduction in weight.

“I can’t wait to get on track this weekend and see what this BMW S 1000RR can do after yesterday’s test,” Allerton stated. “The team and I have been chomping at the bit to finally get the new bike on the circuit and take it racing.

“Out of the box, the 2019 S1000RR is fast, and we have seen that in all of the reports around the world, written by the media. What will it be like in terms of racing, we’ll just have to wait and see. The test at Winton has been a very important one as we have managed test all the options available on such a new platform.

“We can now head into the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix with a better understanding of the bike itself and where we might need to make some adjustments to make it even better for race conditions.”

Allerton claimed a race victory in the Australian Superbikes category at last year’s grand prix for second overall.

Lifting intensity key for defending champion Wilson

Lifting intensity key for defending champion Wilson

Yamalube Yamaha Racing contender shy of the podium in South Australia.

Defending SX2 champion Jay Wilson believes lifting his intensity in the coming rounds will lead to a season-first main event victory in the Australian Supercross Championship.

The Yamalube Yamaha Racing ace has recorded a 5-4 scorecard across the opening two rounds, the number one plate holder admittedly taking too long to bring his race intensity into the night show.

Wilson, who’ll line-up in the opening rounds of the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, finished third in his heat at Port Adelaide on Saturday before charging to fourth in the 15-lap main.

“Looking back, I just took too long to find my intensity in the afternoon sessions,” said Wilson. “I need to find my race pace quicker, get the combos worked out faster and get up to race pace in the first session on the track.

“I wasn’t far off by the main in terms of lap-times, but if my day started there, then I would give myself a much better chance at winning a final. When five or six riders are on the same second, then every bit counts.

“We have a couple of weeks off before round three and just pure intensity is what I will work on in the break. I feel a round win isn’t far away and we are still right in the hunt for the championship.”

Wilson remains in the hunt to successfully defend his SX2 crown, sitting eight points shy of the class leader in fifth position.

Honda To Auction Two Rare Motorcycles For The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Fans of the Honda RC51 and the Honda CBX will want to pay attention to this: Beginning October 23, 2019 the first of two auctions will begin. Get your credit cards ready! The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will benefit.

Begin Press Release:

Honda Auctions Two Rare Motorcycles to Benefit Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation
Bidders can participate through Iconic Motorbikes website

American Honda and Iconic Motorbikes have teamed up to auction off a pair of rare motorcycles in order to help children and teens with brain tumors. All proceeds from the exotic machines— a 2001 “Jurassic Park” RC51 sport bike and a 1981 CBX—will go to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The motorcycles were displayed at this past weekend’s L.A. Ride for Kids event.

Beginning October 23, 2019, motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors can visit the Iconic Motorbikes Auctions website to bid on the RC51. The online auction will last for seven days, after which the CBX will be posted on Iconic’s website for a one-week auction beginning on October 30, 2019.

“For nearly three decades, American Honda has demonstrated an incredible commitment to kids battling brain cancer, and they continue to step up in exciting and remarkable ways to help us cure this devastating disease,” said Mark Edmiaston, Chief Development and Community Engagement Officer, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. “The auction of these two bikes will fuel lifesaving research and life-changing support for families navigating a child’s brain tumor diagnosis. All of us at the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation are grateful for Honda’s partnership and the generous support of the motorcycling community.”

A road-going replica of the motorcycle campaigned by the late Nicky Hayden at the 2001 Laguna Seca AMA Superbike round, the RC51 being auctioned off wears special T-Rex livery as a part of a marketing promotion between American Honda and Universal Studios surrounding the 2001 release of the Jurassic Park III science-fiction adventure film. The CBX is a seminal, 1,047cc six-cylinder sport bike and the flagship of Honda’s 1981 range, sprung from the imagination of Honda engineers as an homage to 1960s GP machinery.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to auction off these two unique motorcycles to support Ride for Kids and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation,” said Chuck Boderman, Vice President of American Honda’s Powersports Division. “We hope this auction will draw in collectors and enthusiasts alike, and help not only raise money to fight pediatric brain tumors, but also raise awareness to this important cause.”

“Everyone at Iconic Motorbikes is proud of our partnership with American Honda to auction off this pair of amazing motorcycles for a good cause,” said Iconic Motorbikes owner Adam Tromp. “The winning bidders will get a one-of-a-kind classic machine, but more importantly, they’ll have the knowledge that they’ve provided important help to the brave children affected by this terrible disease.”

Camier lands 2020 WorldSBK deal with Barni Ducati

British ace cements future in the world championship.

The Barni Racing Team has announced Leon Camier will join the outfit for the 2020 FIM Motul Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Camier will ride the Ducati Panigale V4 R, making it his sixth different manufacturer during his WorldSBK career, while he’ll experience his first taste of the bike during the upcoming 13-14 November tests at MotorLand Aragon.

“I am very much looking forward to the new challenge in the next season,” Camier. “I will use all my riding and development skills to achieve top-level results together with Marco and his team.

“They have a close relation to the factory, are a very passionate, engineering-driven group with focus on results and I believe we will work well together. Having said that, my focus now is first to finish the season as strong as possible in Qatar with my current team.”

The British ace departs Moriwaki Althea Honda, the squad’s future uncertain after the Honda Racing Corporation confirmed it will enter an in-house factory team to be spearheaded by Alvaro Bautista.
