Ducati releases the Hypermotard 950 RVE. The flashy livery and Ducati Quick Shift set this model apart from standard Hypermotards.

Begin Press Release:

Ducati presents the new Hypermotard 950 RVE version

Hypermotard 950 RVE

  • The RVE version is characterized by special “Graffiti” livery, a striking graphic design inspired by that of the Hypermotard 950 Concept presented in 2019 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este
  • A sophisticated painting process and application of the graphics guarantees a result comparable to that of airbrushed bodywork
  • The electronic package of the Hypermotard 950 RVE is enhanced with the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO
  • North American production will be limited to 100 motorcycles with corresponding badging of each production unit number

Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), 15 June 2020 – Ducati presents the new Hypermotard 950 RVE, which is part of the Borgo Panigale fun-bike family between the entry model Hypermotard 950 and the top of the range Hypermotard 950 SP.

The Hypermotard 950 RVE is characterized by a livery called “Graffiti” that is inspired by street art. The bike builds on the success achieved in 2019, especially on social media, by the Hypermotard 950 Concept presented at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Wanting to transfer the same manufacturing quality of the concept bike from which it derives to the production motorcycle, it was necessary in the painting phases to employ highly skilled labor, using very low thickness decals and a particularly long and complex process. The result is comparable to that of airbrushed bodywork.

In addition to the graphics, there is also a standard equipment upgrade for this new version. The electronic package of the Hypermotard 950 RVE is enhanced by the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO, which is added to the components already present in the standard version, namely Bosch Cornering ABS with Slide by Brake function (in setting 1), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) EVO and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO.

The Hypermotard 950 is the fun-bike par excellence of the Ducati range and is designed to guarantee a high level of fun and control while riding. The aggressive design of the bike, inspired by the motard look, revolves around the twin exhausts under the seat and the smaller superstructures that leave the mechanical components visible, including the trellis rear frame that communicates lightness and essentiality. Ergonomics ensure the rider maximum responsiveness in all conditions. The seat is flat and tapered to ensure wide movement and allows the rider to touch the ground with ease.

The Hypermotard 950 RVE is powered by the twin-cylinder 937 cc Testastretta 11° engine, which with its 114 hp at 9,000 rpm and 9.8 kgm of torque, of which over 80% is already available at 3,000 rpm, is the perfect engine to offer maximum fun both in sports riding on the track or on roads full of curves as well as in everyday riding on urban stretches.

At the top of the Hypermotard 950 range is the Hypermotard 950 SP with racing graphics and Öhlins suspension with increased travel, Marchesini forged rims and Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO.

For North America, production of the Hypermotard RVE will be limited to 100 motorcycles, all of which will be numbered with a badge of the corresponding unit, for example 1/100. Deliveries in North America will start in July at a price of $14,195 ($16,195 CAD).

Intermot 2020 Suspended

Cologne, Germany’s biennial motorcycle show is a no-go for 2020, another victim of the pandemic. The event was originally scheduled for mid-October this year, but all is not lost: Its organizers are working on creating a digital news stream communication platform.

Intermot Press Release:

Suspension of INTERMOT 2020

Digital INTERMOT events at year’s end to keep motorcycle community informed of innovations and industry News

Classic trade fairs returning to the venue in Cologne beginning in autumn

Following extensive consultations, and in coordination with the conceptual sponsor, the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), Koelnmesse GmbH has decided to suspend INTERMOT 2020 – an event it originally planned to host from 6 to 11 October 2020. A digital format for this is under preparation and will be implemented by year’s end. Regardless of the decision on INTERMOT, preparations for trade fairs scheduled for autumn 2020 at the venue in Cologne – such as spoga+gafa, DMEXCO and Orgatec – are proceeding as planned.

In contrast to trade fairs with a B2B orientation, major events such as INTERMOT draw tens of thousands of private visitors on all days of the trade fair; the hall space is limited and the time available is short. Spatial proximity and the shared experience of the trade fair form an integral part of the character of this event. At this point in time, the specifications currently in effect that have been issued by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), policy-makers and the public authorities cannot be met at major events.

With this in mind, after conferring with key players from the industry, and with a view to the health of exhibitors and visitors, Koelnmesse and the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM) have decided not to host this trade fair in 2020. ‘An event that depends on its appeal as an experience and event cannot be held in this form at this point in time and thus does not meet the expectations and needs of the industry. Our customers resources for 2021 are already under heavy strain as a result of the SARS/COVIC-19 crisis. As an important part of the motorcycle industry, however, and particularly in difficult times, we want to actively support our partners and are now working full steam on a digital format. With the digital INTERMOT news stream, we are creating a communication platform that will provide sustainable inspiration for the industry and the motorcycle community alike. We can then turn our full focus to the event scheduled for 2022. In future, trade fairs such as INTERMOT will incorporate more hybrid elements – to supplement the on-site experience with added digital reach. All of the stakeholders involved now have plenty of time to prepare accordingly for the next INTERMOT in Cologne, and to make this the meeting place for the international motorcycle community once again’, explain Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, and Reiner Brendicke, General Executive Manager of IVM, in a joint statement.

With this in mind, INTERMOT will continue to actively assist its exhibitors this year and support the business of the motorcycle industry as it revs back up again. We have hosted digital formats in planning that will present vehicle manufacturers’ world premières for the 2021 season, together with innovations and industry news from the parts, accessories and apparel segments. There is also a B2B talk format that will discuss ‘opportunities after the coronavirus crisis’. All of the digital INTERMOT events are scheduled for the end of 2020 and will be broadcast as news streams to the global motorcycle community. Further information will be published in the weeks ahead.

2020 Honda Super Cub C125 arrives in Australia

2020 Honda Super Cub C125

The Super Cub has a long history on a global scale, available in over 160 countries and amassing over 100 million units sold and for such a physically small and slim model, is a giant in the motorcycling world. When the Cub hit its ‘100 million’ milestone in 2019, Honda released the modernised C125, a revamp in its original colourway, that striking and recognisable pale blue.

The 2020-year model rolls into Honda dealers around the country this week, available for an MLP of $6,199 in a new colour: Pearl Nebula Red.

The unique story of the Super Cub begins back in 1958 (Honda’s first 10 years of operation) with the C100, the first Super Cub designed by Mr Soichiro Honda himself with his long-time business partner Takeo Fujisawa. Its stated aim was straightforward: ‘to provide the joy of playing a useful part in people’s lives,’ and it has certainly done that.

This ‘ode to the past’ model really highlights the Cubs timeless appeal and aims to continue the evolution of the legendary machine, by modernising a true classic to fit the demands of present day, city life.

Modernising a true classic to fit the demands of present day, city life, the Super Cub C125’s timeless charm meets modern advantage, with an economical engine and smooth handling ability.

Simple, robust, reliable, economical is the Super Cub C125 engine in a nutshell. The air-cooled two-valve fuel-injected SOHC 125cc unit will keep the Super Cub ahead of city traffic and its automatic centrifugal clutch gives ultra-smooth, quiet gear changes – with no clutch. Although not pictured, the Australian C125 Super Cub this year, will also come standard with a carry rack, passenger foot pegs and a side stand.

The steel frame is optimised with a tuned rigidity balance that maintains the Super Cub’s famously welcoming usability. Longer travel front and rear suspension compared to the original design, 17-inch cast aluminium wheels and disc front brake deliver a supple, confident ride with strong stopping power. ABS is also standard equipment.

All lighting is contemporary and crisp LED while the instruments highlight the depth of the overall design with two lenses separated by dual chrome rings; the outer ring houses the sweep of the analogue speedometer’s needle plus warning lights, the inner an understated, digital display.

A modern finishing touch is the Honda Smart Key; put it in a pocket and forget about it, the Super Cub C125 is live and good to go. It also controls the immobiliser as an extra theft deterrent and is equipped with an ‘answer back’ function whereby the indicators will ‘blink’ at the push of a button to make finding the vehicle easy in busy parking areas.

Twisted ASBK Interviews | Jed Metcher

Twisted ASBK Interviews

With the current break in racing activity, which hopefully will be over soon! We thought it a good idea to roll out this series that I dubbed ‘Twisted ASBK Interviews’.

This is a somewhat comedic departure from the norm that hopes to shed some light into the personalities of ASBK Superbike riders.

Some of these were conducted in person at the track earlier this year, while others were conducted over the phone.

A few of them certainly got me laughing out loud and I hope you view them through the prism of good fun they were taken in. This time around it is Jed Metcher’s turn to answer the curly questions.

Jed Metcher

2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE

Overnight the boys, and girls, in Bologna took the wraps off a new model in the Hypermotard range, with even more hype!

2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE

Here we have the 2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE and it will be coming to Australian Ducati dealers this September.

2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE

Unfortunately we can’t put a price tag on the new model just yet but in specification the RVE slots between the $21,200 standard Hypermotard and the $26,600 Hypermotard SP so one would imagine the ticket for admission to be also somewhere between those two markers.

2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE

The Hypermotard 950 RVE version is characterized by special “Graffiti” livery inspired by that of the Hypermotard 950 Concept presented in 2019 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

This finish Ducati tells us required them to ’employ highly skilled labour, use very low thickness decals and adopt a particularly long and complex process. The result is comparable to that of an airbrushed bodywork.’

The electronic package of the Hypermotard 950 RVE is enhanced by the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO, which is added to the components already present in the standard version, namely Bosch Cornering ABS with Slide by Brake function (in setting 1), Ducati Traction Control Evo (DTC EVO) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO.

This takes a fair bit of control…

The aggressive design of the bike, inspired by the motard look, revolves around the twin exhausts under the minimalist tapered seat and the smaller superstructures that leave the mechanical components visible, including the trellis rear frame.

2020 Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE

The Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVE will be available in Australia and New Zealand in very limited numbers and will arrive in September 2020. Pricing for this model will be confirmed closer to the date of release.

Austrian MX2 rookie Hofer extends with KTM through 2022

News 16 Jun 2020

Austrian MX2 rookie Hofer extends with KTM through 2022

World championship newcomer signed for another two seasons.

Image: Octopi Media.

Red Bull KTM has re-signed Rene Hofer on a two-year contract extension that will see the Austrian remain with the factory team through the 2022 MX2 World Championship season.

Hofer, 18, was drafted into the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team for 2020 after showing promise through the European ranks in the EMX125 and EMX250 categories.

“I’ve been with KTM for about a decade now and every time I step into the company, I feel like I’m in the right place,” Hofer commented. “It’s only my first year with the factory team, but it already feels like home and it’s a pleasure to work and spend time with the guys and achieve our goals together.

“All I can say is that I am super-excited about what the next two years will bring and I will enjoy every minute of it. From my side, I will obviously put in maximum effort and I know everybody in the team will do the same.

“Working together with an Austrian brand will hopefully have a positive effect on Austrian motorsport as well. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to live my dream, but I can’t forget to give-it-up to all the people who helped me get here, especially my family.”

Robert Jonas, vice president Offroad KTM AG, said: “Rene came into the factory team pretty close under the microscope, but we were thrilled to see how he responded to winter training and preparation and then how he adjusted to the speed of MX2 right away.

“He made a few good wildcard appearances in 2019 so he was able to see a little bit of what was in store for 2020 and then adapted well to the demands of being a factory rider. His career keeps progressing and we’re excited to continue that journey together. Hopefully the FIM World Championship can begin again soon and both Rene and Tom can continue to learn and develop.”

Prior to the current COVID-19 stoppage, Hofer has impressed in his first full season of the MX2 World Championship, capturing two top five finishes in four motos before the season was halted. He is the first Austrian to represent Red Bull KTM grand prix racing since Robert Jonas.

No excuses for ‘mad and frustrated’ Ferrandis after runner-up

No excuses for ‘mad and frustrated’ Ferrandis after runner-up

250SX West lead narrowed down to seven points with one round to go.

Image: Octopi Media.

Expect added determination from Dylan Ferrandis at the 250SX Showdown in Utah this weekend after admitting he was left ‘mad and frustrated’ following SLC5.

Ferrandis was chased down by eventual winner Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) on Sunday, losing further ground in the 250SX West standings.

After taking a pivotal hole-shot, defending champion Ferrandis led the opening 14 laps until an aggressive Forkner shoved his way past. From there he went on to win his fourth final of the 2020 season.

“For sure, I was full of frustration,” he admitted. “It’s been kind of a long time since I was beat so easy, so I was mad at myself and frustrated because it’s not normal to run the red plate and number one to get beat like that.

“Obviously, no excuse and I don’t want to say any excuse, just try to stay professional. I just lose the race and still have a seven-point lead, so it’s fine, but yeah, I was really mad at me, for sure.”

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Ferrandis was the dominant force through the opening stages of the series by winning three of the six rounds prior to Monster Energy Supercross heading east in February, however, Forkner has come out stronger in Salt Lake City than he previously was.

“I feel that I’m better than before, just on the race-day, the first one was tough physically and with the bike I was struggling a little bit on the setting,” the Frenchman explained.

“This one, I was feeling awesome all day and I crashed in the heat… bad gate on the main, it doesn’t help me. Maybe, just not used to being out front that soon and, just, I don’t know. I missed one rhythm section and I think it cost me a lot.

“It’s okay, I mean, after Austin passed me I was feeling great and I came back strong, had the best lap of the race. I felt not that much tired at the end of the race. Maybe I need to protect more the inside now.”

Ferrandis still holds a considerable advantage in the 250SX West championship table, carrying a seven-point buffer over Forkner entering the Showdown round to decide this year’s champions on Sunday afternoon.

First turn contact with Tomac unintentional says Webb

First turn contact with Tomac unintentional says Webb

Supercross title rivals come together off the start on Sunday.

Image: Octopi Media.

The first turn contact between Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac wasn’t an intentional tactic, the reigning Monster Energy Supercross champion said last night in Utah.

On his way to the hole-shot in the 450SX main event, the rear-end of Webb’s Red Bull KTM rubbed Tomac’s front wheel, almost causing the latter to fall.

It appeared to a number of onlookers that Webb had purposely made the move in a bid to increase his title chances with just two rounds remaining, however, the 2019 championship winner said that he wasn’t aware it was Tomac who he touched with.

“I didn’t even know that…” Webb stated. “No, I mean, I was coming in hot, I knew someone was on my outside and I was just trying to kinda keep my line and then those bails seemed to come up quick, so I had to hit the brakes. I felt like I hit somebody, but I didn’t know who it was.”

Tomac, who will carry a 24-point lead into Wednesday’s penultimate round, didn’t have much to say on the near-miss afterwards: “It was close there, so, I don’t know – first turns are always chaos.”

Webb has proven the class of the premier category since Supercross arrived in Salt Lake City for the final seven rounds, finishing no worse than second position and collecting two wins to date. He’s currently third in points behind Tomac and Sunday winner Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC).
