Aegerter takes Friday’s MotoE™ honours

In a closely fought contest, Aegerter upped his game in the fourth and final sector to find an extra hundredth to give him the edge over his rivals going into Saturday morning’s FP3 session. Aldeguer had occupied top spot on the timesheets for the majority of the session, with the 16-year-old initially moving two-tenths clear of his rivals after his fourth lap, only to lose out to his Swiss counterpart in the closing stages. Granado, who topped the morning session, remains in contention and is just 0.190s off the top.

Rapid rookie Ogura ends Day 1 fastest at the Red Bull Ring

Less than a tenth covers the Japanese rider, Augusto Fernandez and Gardner on Friday

Impressive rookie Ai Ogura (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) ended the opening day of action at the Bitci Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich at the summit in the Moto2™ class after setting a 1:28.887 in FP1. The wet weather cleared for FP2 and some riders improved, including third place Remy Gardner (Red Bull KTM Ajo), but it’s Augusto Fernandez (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) who remains second just 0.007s off Ogura’s pace.

Three tenths covering the top 10

Once again it’s incredibly competitive in the intermediate class as the riders were able to get two dry sessions under their belts on Friday, despite heavy rain disrupting Moto3™ and MotoGP™ in the afternoon. Gardner’s 1:28.967 was enough to top FP2 ahead of Ogura, but the latter holds the advantage on the combined standings. Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was another improver in FP2, a time good enough for P8 on the overall classification – just 0.2s down on top spot.

Marcel Schrötter (Liqui Moly Intact GP) heads into Saturday’s action as the fourth quickest rider, the German sits marginally ahead of Styrian GP winner Marco Bezzecchi (SKY Racing Team VR46). The Italian had an off-track excursion in FP2 at the tricky downhill Turn 4, Bezzecchi just about avoiding a crash. Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Italtrans Racing Team) and Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) are sixth and seventh respectively, then comes Raul Fernandez in eighth, with Aron Canet (Aspar Team Moto2) and Somkiat Chantra (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) rounding out the top 10.

Reigning Moto3™ World Champion Albert Arenas (Aspar Team Moto2) and Hector Garzo (Flexbox HP40) crashed unhurt in FP2.

Don’t miss the action that awaits in Moto2™ FP3 at 10:55 local time (GMT+2) on Saturday morning, it’s a session that will decide the automatic Q2 qualifiers.

Zarco holds dry advantage, Lecuona tops mixed weather FP2

The Frenchman’s new all-time lap record means he’s the rider to beat ahead of Saturday’s action; rain effects play in the afternoon

A new all-time lap record in MotoGP™ FP1 at the Bitci Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich gives Pramac Racing’s Johann Zarco top spot on Friday. The Frenchman’s 1:22.827 – faster than teammate Jorge Martin’s Styrian GP pole time from last weekend – is 0.798s quicker than second place Joan Mir’s (Team Suzuki Ecstar) FP1 time, with fellow Suzuki star Alex Rins completing the top three on Day 1.

Dry morning, mixed conditions in the afternoon

Zarco’s unbelievable pace in the morning was simply untouchable. Only three riders got within a second of the Ducati rider – fourth place Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) joining the Suzukis in that department – as Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) completed the top five. Both the Spaniard and World Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) encountered small issues with their machines in the morning, both though inside the top six ahead of Saturday.

In the afternoon, 10 minutes before the end of Moto3™ FP2, the Styrian heavens opened. A mostly wet FP3 prevailed for the premier class in what was an almost carbon copy of seven days ago – a dry line appearing in the latter stages. Iker Lecuona (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing) was the first rider to head out on slicks with five minutes to go, and the young Spaniard comfortably went 0.8s clear at the summit. Lecuona’s eventual 1:27.520 was 3.3s faster than Zarco’s second place time, but it didn’t affect the combined standings ahead of Saturday’s crucial FP3 session.

The remaining provisional automatic Q2 qualifiers

Behind sixth place Quartararo sits Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) in seventh, the two-time World Champion again showing solid speed at the Red Bull Ring, the number 73 is a spot ahead of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). Ninth position belongs to Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) as three Hondas place inside the top 10 on the opening day, Styrian GP winner Martin occupies 10th place.

Make sure you tune into FP3 tomorrow morning at 09:50 local time (GMT+2) to see who is going straight into Q2.

Top 10 combined:
1. Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) – 1:22.827
2. Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) + 0.798
3. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) + 0.903
4. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) + 0.963
5. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) + 1.014
6. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) + 1.038
7. Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) + 1.054
8. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) + 1.076
9. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) + 1.140
10. Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing) + 1.217

Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing), second in the title race Sergio Garcia (Santander Consumer GASGAS) are seventh and eighth respectively on Friday, with John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) 0.391s down on his teammate. Ayumu Sasaki (Red Bull KTM Tech3) closes out the top 10, with 13th place Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo) only 0.494s away from top spot.

Wayne Rainey 1993 Yamaha 0WF2 500 GP Racer

1993 Yamaha 0WF2 500 GP

With Phil Aynsley

Wayne Rainey began the 1993 season riding the new 0WF2. Apart from having a revised motor that produced an extra 10 hp over the previous year’s 0WE0’s 160hp, the major change was the adoption of a completely new chassis.

The extruded alloy main frame members were designed to provide much greater rigidity with increased lateral torsion resistance. Rainey rode the bike for the first seven rounds of the season (up until the Dutch GP), and scored wins in Malaysia and Japan.

However he changed to the ROC framed bike seen here from round eight as the original frame proved to be too rigid, upsetting the handling of the bike. The French produced ROC chassis was based on his 1990 title winning 0WC1.

Rainey won the European (Catalunya) and Czech GPs before his career ending crash at Misano later in the season. He finished the season in second position behind Kevin Schwantz.
