Indian Throws Down the Gauntlet With the Challenger Challenge

Indian announced yesterday, in a bold, flaming arrow to-the-forehead marketing move, that it’s going to offer up head-to-head test rides with the new Challenger’s main rival, the best-selling Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special. (Say, didn’t we already do that comparison here at MO?) If our word’s not good enough for you, you can conduct your own two-bike comparo beginning at Daytona Bike Week March 6.

Indian Press Release:

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE DRAWS A LINE IN THE SAND WITH “CHALLENGER CHALLENGE” – A HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON OF THE NEW INDIAN CHALLENGER DARK HORSE & HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROAD GLIDE SPECIAL

National Demo Tour, Local Dealer Demos, Advertising and Episodic Video Series Serve Up Bold Demonstrations of the Indian Challenger’s Superiority Over the Harley Davidson Road Glide Special

Minneapolis (February 12, 2020) – “May the best V-twin win.” That’s the rally cry for the newest marketing campaign for Indian Motorcycle’s all-new Indian Challenger – a fully-loaded premium bagger designed as a superior alternative to the category leader, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special. This morning, Indian announced the “Challenger Challenge,” a campaign that invites motorcyclists to test ride the Challenger and Road Glide Special back-to-back for the ultimate head-to-head comparison.

Launching at Daytona Bike Week on Friday, March 6, the Challenger Challenge product demo tour will visit Indian Motorcycle dealers around the country, as well as select motorcycle rallies and events, including the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. In addition to the national tour, select Indian Motorcycle dealers will have a Road Glide on hand to ensure that any customer who visits their dealership can take the Challenger Challenge.

Indian Motorcycle will support the Challenger Challenge with a digital media campaign, highlighted by an episodic video series where action sports icon Carey Hart and his loyal sidekick, Bryan “Big B” Mahoney, pit the new Indian Challenger head-to-head against the Road Glide Special in a series of tests that showcase power, torque, braking and handling.  In addition to the digital media campaign, the content series can be found on IndianMotorcycle.com, Indian’s social media and YouTube channels.

“The Challenger’s combination of power and dexterity is at another level,” said Hart. “The first time I rode it, I knew that they had something special. But riding the Challenger back-to-back against the Road Glide, it’s not even fair. The Challenger absolutely crushes it.”

“Over the years, the Road Glide has firmly entrenched itself as the category leader and has become the default choice, but our bike is simply better and our confidence in this product is what this campaign is all about,” said Mike Dougherty, President, Indian Motorcycle. “The difference when riding these two bikes back-to-back is undeniable, and we’re excited for riders to experience it for themselves with the Challenger Challenge.”

At the heart of the Challenger is the PowerPlus engine, Indian’s first liquid-cooled large displacement motor (108 cubic-inch, 60-degree V-twin) that packs a best-in-class 122 horsepower and 128 ft-lbs. of torque. The Challenger’s modern and aggressively styled chassis-mounted fairing sits over an inverted front suspension, while the Challenger Limited and Dark Horse variants are equipped with Indian Motorcycle’s intuitive Smart Lean Technology™, keeping riders confidently grounded by utilizing a Bosch® IMU to add cornering control to the dynamic traction control and ABS, as well as Drag Torque Control. A host of amenities add style, convenience and keep the rider comfortable, including electronic cruise control, full LED lighting, a long-haul seat, ABS, keyless ignition, weatherproof saddlebags with over 18 gallons of storage space, and an adjustable windscreen with nearly three inches of travel.

For more information on the Challenger Challenge, visit IndianMotorcycle.com/en-us/Challenger-Challenge. Join the conversation by tagging photos on social media using #ChallengerChallenge. At select events, riders who take the Challenger Challenge will receive an exclusive Challenger t-shirt.

6D ATS-1R Helmet | Gear Review

6D ATS-1R helmet in Gloss Black
6D ATS-1R helmet in Gloss Black.

In 2016 we tested the ATS-1, the first full-face street helmet from 6D, a new company that had developed a patented system called Omni-Directional Suspension (read the review here). Inside the helmet are two nested EPS liners connected by an array of hourglass-shaped elastomer dampers. The dampers allow the EPS liners to move independently in six axes, so the outer shell moves independently of the head. Upon impact, the liners compress together and/or shift laterally relative to each other before they crush like EPS liners in other helmets, absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy and reducing the amount of force transferred to the head. Independent tests have shown that ODS significantly reduces linear and angular (rotational) acceleration compared to other helmets, reducing the likelihood of concussions, traumatic brain injuries or death. The innovation and wide-ranging applicability of ODS helped 6D win the Grand Prize in the NFL’s Head Health Challenge III competition.

6D’s new ATS-1R improves upon its predecessor in a number of ways. Advancements in ODS technology are said to provide “significant improvements in both linear and angular acceleration mitigation” while also reducing weight. My size-medium ATS-1R weighs 3 pounds, 5 ounces, which is 9 ounces lighter than the ATS-1. Designed with input from professional racers, the ATS-1R’s carbon fiber, intermediate-oval shell has an aerodynamic shape with a rear wing to reduce drag, buffeting and lift. With four intake vents, 15 transfer ports and five exhaust vents, the ODS Air-Gap ventilation system, which takes advantage of the space between the nested EPS liners, moves a significant amount of air. With all of the vents open the ATS-1R can be noisy, but it’s suitably quiet when wearing earplugs.

Omni-Directional Suspension
This cutaway graphic shows the 6D’s proprietary Omni-Directional Suspension system that reduces brain damage in rotational impacts.

Other changes to the ATS-1R include a larger shell opening, redesigned cheek pads (optional pads allow sizing to be customized), a redesigned chin curtain, a removable neck cuff and a new self-tensioning face shield base plate, which improves sealing. The anti-scratch, UV-blocking shield offers 10 positions as well as a lockdown lever and a Pinlock 120 anti-fog insert is included. Changing the shield is a no-brainer and requires no tools. The ultra-plush comfort liner is removable, washable and compatible with eyewear, and inside the helmet are integrated speaker pockets.

Comfort, fit and finish, ventilation and ease of use are first rate, and the price of the DOT- and ECE-certified ATS-1R is significantly lower than that of its predecessor. It’s available in sizes XS-XXL for $695 in Gloss Black or $745 in graphics, and comes with a deluxe helmet bag.

Supercross debut of Hunter Lawrence remains up in the air

News 14 Feb 2020

Supercross debut of Hunter Lawrence remains up in the air

Australian still healing from shoulder surgery as 250SX East series arrives.

Highly-rated Geico Honda standout Hunter Lawrence is yet to determine if he will be fit to contest any rounds of 2020 Monster Energy Supercross, which will see the gates drop on 250SX East in Tampa this Saturday night.

Lawrence, 20, continues to recover from extensive shoulder injuries sustained in December and hasn’t yet been cleared to return to riding after undergoing surgery.

An incident while riding at the Honda test track in Southern California was the cause of Lawrence’s latest injury, which will likely delay his Supercross debut altogether for another season.

“What I did was, I tore my rotator cuff and labrum in my left shoulder,” Lawrence told MotoOnline.com. “I smashed the humerus in my shoulder as well, so I had surgery the day after Christmas and have been training every single day since then.

“We’ve invested a lot in physio and stuff away from the bike just to get back, try and make – if not round one – some of the rounds. We tried doing everything we could, but I had a doctor’s appointment and he said it’s looking great, but it’s a case of what if… They would love to see it have another three weeks just to heal.

“It’s really a three-month injury, but I’ve already been mountain-biking for the past three weeks and it feels solid, really good. I was ready to get back on the bike, but they don’t think the risk is worth it and the crew in my circle feels the same.”

Planning to get back on the bike outdoors and then assess his fitness next month will determine if Lawrence will be able to make any 250SX rounds before the end of the year. If there is only a limited amount of rounds remaining once he’s ready, instead expect a return to competition at Hangtown’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener on 17 May.

“As of now we’re not 100 percent sure, because I’m not going to come back and race Supercross if I’m at 70 or 80 percent,” he explained. “It’d be great to get gate-drops, but at the same time I feel like I’m nothing less than a contender and a guy to go for a title at this point of my career. I don’t want to do anything less than that.

“My goal was originally Daytona, which wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do now that I haven’t been given the okay by doctors. There are too many variables with the unexpected when racing, so for sure, I’m bummed – I love Supercross with a passion and would love to be able to race it this year, but that’s not how it’s gone for me.”

If he isn’t able to make it back in time for the latter stages of the 250SX East series this season, Lawrence – who is now based in Florida – has indicated he will look to gain off-season experience amongst a series of international races prior to 2021.
