Australian MX2 champion Wilson Todd has endured a luckless weekend in his guest opportunity with TLD Red Bull KTM at Fox Raceway’s second round of the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

The Queenslander scored the chance to ride for the factory team after impressing at the opening round aboard borrowed equipment, ultimately taking the place of injured team regular Mitchell Falk.

The Californian round got off to a troubling start for Todd, who was taken down in a heavy turn one clash, forcing him to stop by the mechanics while putting him almost two laps down, in the end recovering for 29th position. Battered and bruised, Todd pushed through in the second and final encounter, mustering up a spirited P14 result for 19th overall.

“I jumped out in the start there in moto one, and someone came through the first turn like a bowling bowl,” Todd explained in a Swapmotolive post-race film. “I cartwheeled hard and got run over by a few guys, so I’m pretty sore. The bike was unrideable, I had to pull into the pits to try and get it straightened out – [I was] nearly two laps down.

“I went into the second one pretty sore to say the least – I got a pretty good start, got out front, [but I was] pretty tight and sore. I got passed by a lot of guys straight up – I went to the back of the pack somewhere, then I started getting better, clicking off my laps and started moving forward and passing a few guys.

“I definitely got faster towards the end and ended up around 14th I think. Fingers crossed [I’ll be back for Thunder Valley], but I don’t think I’ve done myself any favours today laying on the deck.”

Todd’s initial campaign in the US was slated to be just the opening two rounds, although it’s still unclear at this stage if the TLD Red Bull KTM team will keep the talented 21-year-old on board for the upcoming rounds, with the series returning to action this weekend at Thunder Valley.

Todd currently leads the MX2 category in the Pirelli MX Nationals, where the championship recommences on 23 June at Gympie in Queensland.
