Australian KTM Ultimate Race qualifiers announced

Nowak and Robertson earn all expenses paid trip to Morocco.

The first-ever KTM Ultimate Race qualification event in Australia was hosted alongside the Transmoto 12-Hour at Batemans Bay in New South Wales last weekend, with two extremely capable and fortunate Australians set to take off to Morocco at the end of this month.

Set to compete against a selection of KTM adventure riders from around the world in an exclusive class at the Merzouga Rally event within the Dakar series, Robert Nowak and Steve Robertson will represent Australia after delivering strong performances in the national qualifier.

Both Nowak and Robertson have won all-expenses paid trips to Morocco for the 2019 KTM Ultimate Race, to be contested on 31 March-5 April. Each will receive factory rider treatment and will be equipped with factory-prepared KTM 790 Adventure R models throughout the event’s duration, while also benefiting from coaching by KTM adventure ambassadors.

The winner of the KTM Ultimate Race in the Merzouga Rally will go on to receive the incredible prize of being awarded their own KTM 790 Adventure R to keep, as well as being provided two VIP tickets to next year’s Dakar Rally.

It’s an initiative introduced by the KTM factory to bring together global KTM adventure communities including Australia, New Zealand, Italy, South Africa, Canada and USA.

Last weekend’s KTM Ultimate Race qualification event at Batemans Bay, operated by the Transmoto Events team, featured an exclusive and limited entry list of just 15 riders. They engaged in a series of off-bike challenges including the Bike Lift, Wheel Change and Navigation/Waypoints that were scored accordingly, as well as a pair of timed on-bike Special Tests.

Once each of those tasks were completed, resulting in incredibly close scores, the field was narrowed down to five top riders who each carried out a ‘hot lap’ timed Special Test of the entire Transmoto 12-Hour circuit that was used for the prestigious enduro event on the following day. In the end it was Nowak and Robertson who emerged as the inaugural KTM Ultimate Race qualifiers from Australia.

Webb extends supercross advantage in Atlanta KTM sweep

First 250SX East/West Showdown victory of 2019 season to Cianciarulo.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb has stretched his lead in the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, series after storming to victory in Atlanta.

Webb captured his fifth win of the nine contested this season, growing his points advantage to 13 as the season moves into its second half.

A decisive hole-shot placed Webb at the head of the pack in the 20-minute main event and he was never headed, withstanding challenges from Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM) and teammate Marvin Musquin in a wire-to-wire win.

Baggett made his way by Musquin following 13 laps – assisted by a mistake in the sand by the Frenchman – and only 2.141s separated the trio across the line. It marked the second all-KTM podium sweep of the season, while the rider currently second in the standings, Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) finished fourth.

Rookie Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha) put forward his best performance of the season in placing fifth, with Australia’s Chad Reed (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing) finishing in 13th position this weekend.

In the first 250SX East/West Showdown of the season, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s current West Coast leader Adam Cianciarulo was assertive on his way to victory, topping Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Yamalube Star Racing Yamaha) and early leader Austin Forker (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki).

The 2019 season will now travel to Daytona International Speedway in Florida for round 10, which will be another 250SX East round on the schedule.

Kawasaki introduces 2019 WorldSBK team ahead of Phillip Island

Image: Supplied.

The new-look Kawasaki Racing Team unveiled its 2019 Motul Superbike World Championship contender in San Remo, Victoria, on Saturday night ahead of next week’s opening round of the season.

Reigning four-time champion Jonathan Rea was joined by incoming teammate and current British champion Leon Haslam to take the covers off their Ninja ZX-10RR race bikes.

In launching its final line-up and livery in Australia this year, rather than at their home base in Barcelona as in previous seasons, KRT has already put a fresh spin on its approach as the excitement builds towards another new season at the highest level of production-derived racing.

Managing director of Kawasaki Motors Australia, Shigemi Tanaka, led the speakers on the night as the latest product of KHI’s passion for racing was unveiled to a waiting world, both on site and to the world through live streaming online.

“It is indeed an honour to have the unveiling of the 2019 Kawasaki Racing Team here at Phillip Island and for Kawasaki Motors Australia to be hosting this important event,” Tanaka commented. “Three times in the past it has been my pleasure to speak at these launch events on behalf of both Kawasaki Motors Europe and Kawasaki Heavy industries.

“Now with Jonathan Rea as a four-time world champion on the Ninja ZX-10RR it is a nice coincidence that this is now my fourth time to speak, this time on behalf of Kawasaki Motors Australia and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The theme today is Ganbarou – we will face our challenges and try harder.”

With winter testing ended in Europe at the end of January, there will now be two days of official tests for all WorldSBK competitors at Phillip Island on Monday and Tuesday. With a new format to race weekend in 2019, featuring three WorldSBK races and not two, the first round of the new season will be truly historic.

“KRT always push the boat out when it comes to launching the new colours and it is the first time you see your final bike in the flesh,” Rea explained. “Everything is real and now we turn the page to 2019. Alpinestars have done a great job with my leathers as well. I changed my number one plate a little bit too, incorporating some new logos. It is nice to do the launch here in Australia and so close to the first race weekend.”

Haslam added: “To be part of such a professional team and to see the manufacturer itself and Kawasaki Australia putting on such a massive show is fantastic – they are really getting behind it. I just want to get going now. The launch and all the things around it are exciting but now I just want to get on track to ride the new bike.”

With Showa joining returning major partners Monster Energy, Elf and Motocard, KRT team manager Guim Roda has also welcomed in the new season.

“Last year we faced the challenge of new technical rules that we feel constrained our performances,” Roda stated. “Nevertheless, we succeeded in winning the riders, manufacturers and teams world titles in a very successful year. For this year these rules are still maintained, but we’re prepared.

“We have a bike with a new more capable engine and we have reinforced our technical and human assets to take advantage of this. We also welcome a new rider in Leon Haslam, who has been making big steps in the winter tests. We think makes a great pairing with Jonathan Rea, who has offered us so much in all terms.”

Rins and Mir headline Team Suzuki Ecstar launch

Youthful MotoGP squad unveils 2019 look at official team launch.

Image: Supplied.

Team Suzuki Ecstar has launched its 2019 look at its official team presentation over the weekend, showcasing the two GSX-RRs to be piloted by Alex Rins and Joan Mir.

With two seasons aboard the GSX-RR already, Rins spearheads the team’s efforts as the experienced rider in the garage, having achieved five podiums during the 2018 season with the clear target of getting to the top step of the podium this year.

“Finally winter is over and I can go back riding,” said Rins. “This winter break has felt so long and I can’t wait to be back riding again. After the last test in November I left clear feedback for the engineers to work on, as far as I know the improvements we will try in Sepang will not be drastic but many small improvements in many areas, which is totally the Suzuki philosophy.

“We know what we were missing on the bike, so I believe the R&D in Japan will deliver a package which will help us to improve further. My winter has been very intense, with successful recovery and intense training programme. This is an important year, because in 2018 we were able to show that we can consistently fight for podium positions, and now it’s time to go for the bigger prize – the victory.”

Debutant Mir has already proven that he is not daunted by the top class, showing solid performances in the November tests in Valencia and Jerez, however he acknowledges his maiden MotoGP campaign will be focused on learning rather than results.

“Needless to say, I am very excited to get back on my bike,” Mir commented. “This winter has been very long without riding but I focused on my physical training, which has given positive results so far. Of course I still need many more hours on the bike, there are so many things I still need to understand to be even more effective.

“But I feel very supported by the team and I will rely on their wealth of experience to improve, and also to contribute my own improvements to my bike. It will be a whole package, me and the bike, that will hopefully develop step by step. I don’t have any pressure, but for sure my clear objective will be to end the season with a smaller gap to the winner when compared to the first race.”

The first pre-season test for the MotoGP class is scheduled for 6-8 February at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.

Brutal fall crushes winning hopes for Quintanilla

Dakar contender recovers for fourth overall ranking.

Image: Supplied.

A brutal fall at the beginning of the 10th and final stage of the 2019 Dakar Rally crushed Pablo Quintanilla’s hopes of earning a maiden title, although it wasn’t enough to completely rule him out of the competition.

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider sat a close second in the classification ahead of the day’s proceedings, granting him prime position for victory, however his plans came unstuck after over-jumping a broken dune, resulting in a heavy landing that momentarily sidelined the Chilean contender.

The incident pushed him down to fourth in the standings after finishing the stage in 22nd position, allowing an injured Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) to somewhat comfortably ride home to a second Dakar Rally crown.

“Today I gave it all for the overall win, but things did not go as planned,” Quintanilla admitted. “A few kilometres into the stage there was a broken dune and it was hard to see it. I jumped it and landed heavily on my foot. Luckily the medical crew arrived a few seconds later and they helped me get back on the bike.

“The rest of the day it was just a struggle to get to the finish. If you want to win the Dakar you do need to take some risks and that’s what I tried to do today. I was really trying my best today for myself and for the team. It was a tough day but still I’m happy I’ve finished this Dakar.

“I take my fourth-place result and focus on the future. Overall, I’m happy I gave 100 percent at this Dakar and took some risks while battling for the win. I will come back even stronger next year.”

Quintanilla proved to be one of the most competitive racers in the event this year, leading the overall classification on numerous occasions and looked set to disrupt KTM’s now 18-year winning streak before his campaign came to a brief, yet abrupt, halt.

Australian Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) has maintained his advantage at the top of the 2019 Dakar Rally standings on the penultimate day of racing, as top three newcomer Michael Metge (Sherco TVS Rally Factory) won the stage.

Heading into the dunes for the 313-kilometre timed special, the first group of riders stuck together for the majority of the stage.

Metge, starting in the second wave of riders off the line, lodged a time of 3h46m38s to edge out yet another top three newcomer Daniel Jager (MEC HRC), while Pablo Quintanilla (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) wound up in third.

Defending champion Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was fourth followed by Price, who leads Quintanilla in the classification by 1m2s, as the top five is rounded out by Walkner, Andrew Short (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and Xavier de Soultrait (Yamalube Yamaha Rally).

Rodney Faggotter (Yamalube Yamaha Rally) was ruled out of the competition earlier in the event.
