Delayed Aussie electric motorcycles coming in 2022

Australia’s first full-size electric motorcycle, the Savic C-Series, has been delayed more than 18 months by the coronavirus pandemic and a delay in government support.

The first 50 were to be delivered to customers by last December and supporters had contacted us with concerns that the bike would ever be produced.

Now designer Dennis Savic says they have now secured $1.83 million in funding and Dennis are aiming to have at least 20 bikes delivered to their owners in the last quarter of 2022, before scaling up manufacturing in 2023.

Funding includes contributions from the Victorian Government and co-investment of $657,000 from the Federal Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC).

The former Ford optimisation engineer and his Perth-based co-designer Dave Hendroff have built up a team of more than 30 automotive engineers and software developers – some full-time, some consultants – to develop the C-Series.

Their West Melbourne firm has already received 90 orders for the three-model C-Series, which ranges from the torquey 25-kilowatt Omega (comparable to a 300cc traditional motorbike), to the 40kW Delta, and the 60kw Alpha (roughly equivalent to a 1000cc bike). The Alpha has 200Nm of torque, powering it to 100km/h from a standing start in 3.5 seconds.

The C-Series’ 16kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged to 80% in under four hours and will deliver a city range of between 150km (for the Omega) and 250km (for the Alpha). The Omega will cost $12,990, the Delta $16,990, and the Alpha will be $23,990 which is less than half the price of its main competitor, the Harley-Davidson LiveWire.

“Our initial customers have proved to be incredibly loyal and have shown great faith in us and our bike during the delays we’ve experienced during the lockdowns of the past 18 months,” Dennis says.

Savic’s customers are an eclectic mix of young and old, male and female, with CEOs and CFOs alongside tradies and farmers.

“We even have a couple of lifelong Harley riders in there, which gives us great delight,” Dennis says.2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

Investor Michelle Melbourne, who represents a group of motorcycle-riding private investors, says the company is “very important for all Australians”.

“The switch to sustainable forms of transport is happening rapidly, and Savic has the prototype for a revolutionary and elegant market offering that is attractive to traditional motorcycle enthusiasts and newcomers alike,” Michelle says.

Dr Jens Goennemann, Managing Director of the AMGC says Savic Motorcycles are “paving the way for electric mobility in Australia by leveraging the best of breed designers, engineers and manufacturing partners to deliver motorbikes of unmatched performance for local and global customers”.

“Savic are proof that when you embrace the entire manufacturing process from design to research and development, all the way through to sales, there are exciting times ahead for Australian manufacturing.”

Global venture capital firm Artesian has supported Savic through its last two capital raises.

“We believe that electric vehicles are the future of automotive transport, and we’ve been impressed with the Savic team’s ability to design and build a high-performance electric road bike and commence D2C sales,” says Artesian Portfolio Manager Alexandra Clunies-Ross.

Savic has run two small capital raises to develop its prototype over the past four years, but its current raise is a game-changing proposition that will fast-track progress towards a second 200-unit production run in 2023. The funds drive was supported by grants from the AMGC and the Victorian Clean Tech Fund, as well as an R&D loan from the Victorian Government’s Invest Victoria.

The C-Series has several world-class, racing-quality components, including Wilbers suspension, Brembo brakes, and a customised Optibelt carbon-fibre drive belt.

The Savic team is also developing an artificial intelligence system and riders’ app, and will design a special anti-lock braking system with Bosch Australia.

All Savic bikes will also have removable cowls to allow for pillion passengers.

Earlier this year, the C-Series Alpha featured as the title object at the entrance to the ‘Spark’ climate-change exhibition at Sydney’s Australian Museum, and was celebrated as one of the world’s 101 most influential motorcycles at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art.

Electric Savic nears half its first orders

Almost half of the first production run of Australia’s first full-size electric motorcycle, the Savic C-Series, has been allocated to paid-up customers.

Savic Motorcycles founder Dennis Savic (pictured above) says they are on track for their first customer delivery in December after coronavirus pandemic setbacks.

So far, 21 of their 49 units have been pre-ordered for their first production run of 2021.

“The company management remains confident that this initial run will be sold out by the end of the year,” they say on their latest email update.

“With the first Savic-developed motor on schedule to arrive at our workshop in September, the current goal remains to get the first five Alpha bikes on to the road by late December.

“This includes our homologation vehicle, which will undergo all the roadworthy and safety tests required for regulatory compliance and state-based registration.”2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders giants

Savic Motorcycles will make 49 C-Series cafe racer electric motorcycles available in three variants.

Specification Alpha Delta Omega
Power 60kW 40kW 25kW
Torque 190Nm TBC TBC
Range 200km TBC TBC
Charge time 4-6 hours TBC TBC
0-100km/h 3s 900ms TBC TBC
Price (+ORC) $22,999.00 $15,999.00 $10,999.00

That’s much cheaper than the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle which launches in Australia next month at $A49,995.

Buyers of the first production models will also receive:

  • Exclusive company updates first;
  • Lifetime membership providing exclusive discounts for all future Savic rider gear; and
  • Live updates and images of their bike build as it happens.2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders whirring

Each model comes with several battery pack options. The largest offered in the Alpha will provide range of up to 200km, while the smallest option in the Omega is expected to have about 50km range.

Like all electric vehicles, peak torque is instantaneous and the Alpha will accelerate from 0-100km in 3.9 seconds.

By comparison, the LiveWire has city range of about 235km and highway range of about 150km and reaches 100km/h in three seconds.

Savic customers will be able choose a range of options in brakes, suspension, wheels, tyres and three colours – Spectre, Stealth, and Rustic.

Aftermarket upgrades will also be offered.

The bikes feature a fully integrated, stressed, liquid-cooled motor and energy storage system.

Depending on the model and battery pack a customer selects, a single charge can provide up to 11kWh. That costs only $3 compared with about $15 for a petrol bike to travel 250km.

Orders start for first Aussie electric motorbike

Australia’s first full-size electric motorcycle, the Savic C-Series, has launched today in Wollongong at the Australian Motorcycle Festival with orders accepted for for first 49 bikes.

The updated prototype revealed today is a far cry from the one unveiled a year ago, thanks to feedback from the public, according to founder Dennis Savic.

Prices

Pricing is now $12,990 for the 120km-range Omega, $16,990 for the 150km Delta and $23,9990 for the 200km Alpha. (Range is calculated on 100km/h highway riding at constant throttle without regenerative braking. City range should be higher.)

Prices announced in August were: $10,990 Omega, $15,999 and $22,999 Alpha.

It’s still much cheaper than the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle launched last month in the US at about $US30,000 ($A44,000). It will be available in Australia late next year. Pricing is yet to be confirmed.

The Savic range is also competitive on highway range with models such as Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire, and bikes from Zero and Energica.

Savic product spokesman Michael D’Amico says their price rise is “due to an increase in motor torque to better compete with other high end electric motorcycles on the market”.

So we’ve managed to more or less match performance, for a significantly lower price to customers,” he says.

Our prices have increased slightly, but they are in the order of $5-10k below our direct competitors.”

Savic is also offering a $2000 discount on Alpha, $1000 on Delta and $500 on Omega Spec models if customers submit an expression of interest for orders at the Australian Motorcycle Festival or online.

Michael says they currently (sic) have four orders for the founder-edition vehicles and are today releasing 49 orders of the first C-Series production run.

“The Alpha spec is the most asked-about model, however we have high hopes for the Omega as we intend to have it comply with the LAMS scheme.

“Manufacturing will commence in August 2020 with deliveries scheduled for late 2020 through to early 2021.”

Orders can only be placed online and they will be shipped within Australia only for the first production run.

Savic has scheduled their first demo ride day in Melbourne in February 2020.

Updates2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

The updated prototype is a much more handsome bike than the original.

“This year we completely re-designed and manufactured our own electric motor and battery pack,” Dennis says.

“We developed a liquid-cooled, aluminium-billet, CNC-machined battery enclosure that integrates into the frame.”

It also helps disguise the “brick” battery shape.

The original prototype’s powertrain was assembled from off-the-shelf parts and entry level battery cells.

“We were limited to 40kW and about 100Nm of torque from the motor, but the battery cells couldn’t deliver that power at all,” Dennis says.

“We had to hand fabricate the frame that supported the battery pack and motor, providing a less-than-elegant solution.”

Design2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

“We learned a lot through 2018 on the vehicle design side of the business,” Dennis says.

“We went back to the drawing board and completely refined the design of the vehicle.

The original had a swingarm from a donor bike, but they have now engineered a tubular single-sided swingarm for a “designer” aesthetic as well as improved handling dynamics. 2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

“Last year we hadn’t engineered our seat at all, and we received a lot of feedback on the narrowness of the seat,” Dennis says.

“We did some vehicle level testing and found it to be uncomfortable indeed!

“We have widened the seat this year and will be tested when vehicle testing begins in December.”

It is still a solo seat, but Dennis says they plan to bring out a pillion option next year. 2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

The bolt-in Motec dash has also been replaced with Savic’s own dash software and the body and frame finishes have been improved for aesthetics and rider comfort.2019 Savic electric motorcycle prototype orders

There is also now a lower fairing option.

The Savic Prototype was designed, engineered, developed and built in Australia.

However, it now includes pre-production parts from suppliers in Taiwan and China.

“We are also looking to engage further supply networks in India,” Dennis says.

“The reality is that we have to manufacture our components overseas, but we will be assembling all our vehicles locally for the Australian market.”
