A German moves to Australia and modifies an R.E. Himalayan

Going to town on a Himalayan then heading bush

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is perhaps an unlikely focus for riders keen on extensively modifying their motorcycles but there is no doubt they are now a popular platform to customise/individualise.

A Royal Enfield Himalayan with a difference

Built by Tommy Thöring, who builds under the name of ‘Schlachtwerks’, ‘he describes his 2020 Himalayan as a ‘Classic Enduro’, but he just calls it #38, as it’s the 38th custom bike built by Schlachtwerks.

Plenty of hand-built components on Tommy’s bike and upgraded suspension via a YSS shock

Tommy uses #38 as his daily-rider, and to escape into the bush on weekends with a new found passion for riding the fire trails and tracks around the outskirts of Sydney and beyond, including a maiden sojourn to the Gold Coast Hinterland and Byron Bay.

Tommy’s Royal Enfield Himalayan

Originally from Frankfurt, Germany, Tommy now works with Surfside Motorcycle Garage in Brookvale, Sydney. Tommy describes Surfside M/C as a ‘Classic Motorcycle workshop’, one that actually builds bikes as well as selling and servicing them.

Tommy’s Royal Enfield Himalayan

Tommy’s inspiration for his bike stemmed from Enduro bikes of the 80’s.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 first reveal

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Indian motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield have revealed another retro cruiser style machine that will replace the Thunderbird 350 X that is not currently sold in Australia.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

It is unclear as yet which Meteor 350 variants will come to Australia but overseas markets have the Meteor 350 Fireball as the most affordable. More up-spec variants dubbed Stellar and Supernova continue the space inspired naming regimen.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

In India the machines are expected to sell for the equivalent of around $3500 but with Australian import duties and licencing costs we can probably expect our ride-away pricing to be in excess of $5000.

The 349 cc singe-cylinder might be air-cooled but it is fuel injected.  A little over 20 horsepower is claimed along with around 27 Nm of torque from the long-stroke engine.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Cooling fins add to the retro look of the machine while a single exhaust port dumps in to a long and low slung almost peashooter style chromed exhaust.  Even from the amateur videos with so-so audio quality the machine appears to sound quite good, particularly on start-up.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

A massive reduction in vibration and improvement in refinement is promised over the machines somewhat agricultural predecessor thanks to a balancer shaft.

A five-speed gearbox and chain final drive completes the drivetrain.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

The new Meteor 350 rolls on alloy rims and tubeless tyres. A 19-inch front will aid stability on rougher roads and combines with a 140/70-17 rear. A generous 170 mm of ground clearance combining with that 100/90-19 front hoop should allow for plenty of soft-roading.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

A single 300 mm disc with twin-piston floating caliper up front is backed up by a dual-channel ABS system and large 270 mm rear disc.

A circular LED ring surrounds and contrasts with what otherwise looks like a conventional halogen headlight. Huge old school indicators protrude on stalks from the headling housing.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

A large round conventional speedometer has a central LCD insert that displays fuel level, gear selected along with a clock and normal odometer/tripmeter functions.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

It is flanked by another smaller round display that on start-up displays the Royal Enfield logo followed by ‘Built With Google’. This ‘Tripper’ display enables some extra functionality via an app and Bluetooth, with simple navigation prompts fed from Google Maps and displayed on this additional screen.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Pillion grab-rails and an optional sissy bar will make carrying pillions and/or luggage a simple affair.

The rider controls are a somewhat foot-forward affair but the rider is positioned quite upright with high-set bars. Seat height is 765 mm.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Chassis wise a new double-cradle frame forms the backbone of the Meteor with conventional 41 mm telescopic forks that have 130 mm of travel. A six-stage pre-load adjustable twin-shock rear helps to smooth out the bumps. The wheelbase is 1400 mm.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

A 15-litre fuel cell should offer a range in excess of 300 kilometres.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350 Range

We will have to wait and see which variants Urban Moto Imports will decide to bring to our shores and what price point they will pitch it in the market. With all the improvements in this new model it certainly seems well-engineered enough for our shores, and if priced smartly it might get a decent reception in the Australian market.

Royal Enfield debut in American Flat Track shows promise

Last weekend the highly anticipated Royal Enfield Twins FT, AFT Production Twins racer was unveiled to the flat track world. After months of development and testing, American Flat Track (AFT) professional flat track racer Johnny Lewis made history as Royal Enfield competed in its first ever AFT event.

The Royal Enfield Twins FT is a joint effort between Royal Enfield and MotoAnatomy, Lewis’ proprietary race team and flat track academy. Over the course of the last six months, Lewis and team have worked closely with Royal Enfield, renowned road racing chassis builder Harris Performance and engine tuning specialists S&S Cycle.

Lewis’ participation in the Williams Grove Half-Mile marked a major milestone in Royal Enfield’s 119-year history. In this first year, Lewis is looking to be competitive, but the overall focus remains on the development of the Twins FT platform. This will allow the team the time to make necessary changes and adjustments throughout the remainder of the season.

We had quite the journey to get to this point,” said Lewis. “We’ve been working consistently over the past six months to develop a competitive package for Royal Enfield. The latest iteration of the race bike was shipped over from India in pieces on Monday and we’ve been working around the clock to put it together. I’ve really enjoyed the development process of the motorcycle and Royal Enfield along with the other partners involved have worked hard to make this happen. The bike performed well and we’ve got a great foundation to build upon.

Royal Enfield American Flat Track

The team faced an uncertain future when the AFT season was postponed in March due to COVID-19. Not fully knowing how the year would unfold, Lewis went to work developing a prototype motorcycle early in the year. With ongoing communication, Lewis and the teams at Harris Performance, Royal Enfield and S&S Cycle continued working through chassis changes and updates as Lewis tested the prototype at his Center Hill, Fla. facility. Despite the challenges of shipping parts overseas and multiple time zones, Lewis and team persevered.

This has been a team effort across the board,” said Breeann Poland, Marketing Lead for Royal Enfield Americas. “Seeing the Royal Enfield Twins FT in a race setting was an impressive accomplishment for everyone that worked nights and weekends, and ultimately lost sleep over the project. We couldn’t have asked for better partners like Johnny, the Royal Enfield team in India and the U.K., Harris Performance and S&S Cycle to make this happen. There’s still plenty to be done from a development standpoint and we are realistic with our expectations, but this is a step in the right direction.”

Royal Enfield American Flat Track Production Twin

The motorcycle that Lewis rode at Williams Grove Speedway only arrived in the U.S. three days before the race, in pieces, and had to be assembled in the following two days. Timing was so tight that there was no time for a track test – the official practice session on Friday was the first time Lewis rode his Twins FT. Lewis went on to raise some eyebrows, taking a third place semi-final finish and an incredible sixth place finish in the main event, an amazing first outing for the team.

On Saturday, the team tested new chassis setups resulting in better handling than the previous day. Johnny was running in third place during the Semi when a weakened head gasket failed and he was forced to pull off the track. The problem was identified, and with an hour and a half to go before the Main, the MotoAnatomy x Royal Enfield team, including engineers in the U.K. assisting virtually, tore the motor down, replaced the gasket and rolled the bike back onto the track in the 13th spot, minutes before the green flag. Lewis went on to carve his way through the field, claiming an impressive seventh place to finish off the weekend.

Royal Enfield American Flat Track Production Twin

The team will continue testing and development during the next two weeks leading up to the Dallas Half-Mile events with support from Royal Enfield staff in both the U.S. and U.K. This will provide Lewis and team the opportunity to continue making improvements to engine durability and chassis set-up.

Full results from last weekend’s AFT races can be found in this week’s Moto Wrap (Link)

Joining Lewis at the later Atlanta Short Track round and AFT Finale in Daytona Beach, will be the participants of Royal Enfield’s BUILD TRAIN RACE (BTR) program, who will compete in an entertainment exhibition race aboard custom-built INT 650 motorcycles. Lewis and team will race the remainder of the AFT calendar to gather more data and feedback on the Royal Enfield Twins FT package as they look ahead to the 2021 AFT season.

Royal Enfield Interceptor tops UK sales charts

Royal Enfield on the up

Royal Enfield’s Interceptor 650 has a new feather to add to its cap after topping motorcycle sales in the UK (for the more than 125cc motorcycles category) in June. The latest accolade joins the fact that the Interceptor 650 is also the best selling naked motorcycle over the June 2019 to June 2020 period in the same region, with the Royal Enfield Himalayan sitting at number four in the same category.  The Interceptor 650 has also been the most successful middleweight motorcycle (250cc-750cc) for the June 2019 to June 2020 period in the UK.

Despite Royal Enfield now being Indian owned, run and manufactured, the brand’s British history and heritage was actually revisited with the 650 models, with the frame developed by Harris Performance, which was acquired by Royal Enfield in 2015. The marque also sought expertise for the development from around the world, which by all accounts included many ex-Triumph staff, with the development tech centre located in the UK as well.

These new sales records represent a remarkable feat, and represent the wide-spread acceptance of these models around the world and the enormous leap forward that Royal Enfield have made from their core 350 and 500 models, while being a first-of-its-kind by any Indian two-wheeler manufacturer selling in the UK.

Royal Enfield's 650s have been a worldwide success
Vimal Sumbly, Head of Business APAC region
Vinod K. Dasari – CEO Royal Enfield

“Our vision is to expand and lead the middleweight motorcycling segment across the world. Towards this vision and further strengthening our position as a truly global brand, Royal Enfield has been consistently focusing on widening its footprint in international markets and creating engaging experiences for enthusiasts. Since its launch, the Interceptor 650 has been gaining momentum among consumers, and has won several awards globally. Dominating the mid-segment in the UK for a year, is a truly remarkable achievement that we are very proud of. We are equally delighted with the success of our adventure-tourer Himalayan which has been among the top 5 best selling middle-weight motorcycles in the UK consistently over the last 12 months. This response from our customers in the UK has propelled Royal Enfield to become one of the fastest growing motorcycle brands in the UK.”

“The Interceptor 650 marked the beginning of a new chapter and was the first truly global motorcycle from Royal Enfield. It has paved the way for us to grow from strength to strength; by building more awareness and aspiration for the brand in international markets, and by growing the 500cc+ category more than 4-times in India. Both, the Interceptor 650 and Himalayan have brought in a lot of first time buyers into Royal Enfield and we believe these motorcycles have a strong potential to grow our international markets.”

The Twins have contributed to the success of Royal Enfield in the APAC region too since their launch, with Vimal Sumbly sharing that these models have been well received in Australia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Vimal Sumbly – Head Business APAC

“We are delighted to share that Interceptor since its launch in the APAC region has been garnering a very good response among our customers and communities. We have over 4,500 Interceptor customers across our markets who subscribe to timeless styling coupled with contemporary performance. The quintessential modern-classic roadster was on an awards winning spree in the region. It won some of the most prestigious awards across Thailand, Australia and Philippines markets. In Thailand, the Interceptor won the “Best Modern Classic in the Middle-Weight category award two years in a row by the coveted Grand Prix group, in Australia it won the “Best LAMS Retro Award by Bike Sales Australia” and in Philippines we won the “Best Roadster Award” by C! magazine.”

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is currently available in Australia from $9,790, while the Continental GT 650 is available from $9,990. Australian importer, UMI group (including MV Agusta, Royal Enfield and Gas Gas), choose not to be members of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries thus Australian sales figures are not officially available.

Launched in September 2018, the Interceptor 650  shot to popularity across global markets, and since its launch, the upper end (500cc and above) of the mid-sized motorcycling segment for Royal Enfield has grown over four times, between FY 2019 and FY 2020.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan has also managed to carve a niche within the adventure touring segment. Inspired by Royal Enfield’s 60 years of enduring history in its spiritual home – The Himalayas – the motorcycle is an accessible and engaging option for riders.

Led by the Interceptor 650 and the Himalayan, Royal Enfield has recorded an overall volume growth of 96% across its international markets in FY20, with Europe registering 100% growth over last year. In the UK, Royal Enfield has made significant inroads in expanding its retail footprint to 67 customer touch points. The brand has also invested in expanding its marketing, sales and service teams to manage this growth.
