New generation Royal Enfield Himalayan arrives (Euro5)

Much improved Himalayan about to land

A new and improved generation of the Royal Enfield Himalayan will arrive in Australian dealerships next week.

Some of the changes include engine improvements that help it achieve Euro5 certification while improved suspension, instrumentation and luggage capacity help lift the dynamic ability of the machine a few notches.

Unfortunately the price has also gone up with importers stating that freight costs have multiplied due to the global pandemic. This is well-known and across the board I have had people mention to me that many industries are reporting a fivefold increase in shipping charges, along with massive delays and logistical dramas along the way.  The price rise has been around $500 with the new Himalayan starting at $8190 Ride Away in base colours while the Rock Red or Lake Blue colourways attract a $200 price premium while the Granite Black or Pine Green models will retail for $8590 Ride Away.

Helping to offset the price rise is Royal Enfield’s three year 30,000 kilometre warranty and roadside assistance program along with the addition of the ‘Tripper’ navigation system driven by Google Maps.

2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan Tripper Navigation System

This is a simple but effective system whereby a small LCD display on the bars takes navigation cues from your phone via Bluetooth and then presents the next instruction by way of an arrow and countdown to turn.

The ABS system is now dual-channel and the rear intervention can be switched off when the rider desires.

The 21-inch front rim gives the Himalayan great stability on rough surfaces and Royal Enfield claim the machine is rugged enough to be ‘built for all roads, built for no roads.’

220 mm of ground clearance is about as generous as it gets when it comes to learner legal adventure bikes in Australia and that the Himalayan manages to achieve that, along with 180 mm of suspension travel at the rear, 200 mm at the front, while retaining a low 800 mm seat height is pretty impressive.

The 411 cc single has not picked up any power or torque gains on its way to Euro5 certification

Royal Enfield claim the seat is now much more comfortable for the long haul while the luggage capacity has been improved along with a much improved rear carrier rack that is fitted as standard. The windshield is also claimed to be improved.

Royal Enfield Himalayan

The Indian brand has also been on a mission to raise their quality control standards in recent times and these changes have paid dividends across their range as they seek to extend their global footprint. That is obviously working as Royal Enfield is the biggest selling brand of 250 to 750cc motorcycles in the world.

2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan

Locally almost 2000 customers have taken home a Himalayan here in Australia and the model makes up 20 per cent of the brand’s sales in our region. While official sales figures are not released, Royal Enfield claim to be the fifth biggest selling brand of mid-capacity road motorcycles in Australia.

New Royal Enfield Classic 350 | Meteor derived retro

2021 Royal Enfield Classic 350

Royal Enfield have now revealed their all-new Classic 350, featuring the same powerplant found in the recently launched Meteor 350, a 349 cc air-cooled single-cylinder with fuel injection. This move brings their 350 range up to date across the board.

Performance now reaches 20.2 horsepower peaking at 6500 rpm, while 27 Nm of torque peaks lower in the rev range at 4000 rpm. The five-speed gearbox has been revised for smoother shifting.

That’s not hugely different to the earlier Rumbler 350 looking at the spec’ sheet, with a little bit more power at the expense of a smidge of torque.

A primary balancer shaft reduces vibrations, which are a noticeable characteristic of the older Royal Enfields. This will be a welcome change that should help attract new riders.

The chassis is also new, with a stiffer design aimed to offer better cornering confidence, as well as improved stability.

Likewise the suspension is updated for better comfort. Revisions to the brakes have Royal Enfield claiming a more confidence inspiring braking performance.

Ergonomics are promised to be improved. This includes a wider seat with soft-foam cushion padding, new handlebars and other tweaks which haven’t been specifically noted.

Another new feature is an analogue dash with LCD info panel, as well as a USB charging point, while a turn-by-turn navigation pod is available from the accessories department. That’s part of an extensive accessory catalogue designed to allow riders to personalise their Classic 350 in various ways, with easy bolt-on mods.

The Royal Enfield range also features a three-year warranty in Australia, ensuring plenty of peace of mind for riders.

Where the new Meteor 350 offers a modernised take on the 350 platform, the Classic, as the name suggests looks to be incorporating the updates, while retaining the styling and feel of a classic machine that has made Royal Enfield prove so popular and led to a major resurgence for the brand in recent years.

The Classic 350 won't be for the rev heads out there, but for those after an authentic, stylish retro machine should be very attractive

It looks like this latest 350 may extend that appeal further, but the focus still seems to be on classic authenticity rather than performance even if we’re now seeing EFI, a trait shared with the 500.

For those looking at something more performance orientated with a sporty edge, the Royal Enfield 650 twins will no doubt remain the go-to choice, however it’s hard to argue with the popularity of the singles.

The new Classic 350 will come in five variants, with 11 colour-ways in total, ensuring there’s a bike to suit almost any rider. These include the Classic Chrome, which as the name suggests features chromed guards, two-tone tank and an unpainted engine.

The Classic Dark options on the other hand, run a more subdued colour scheme in either Stealth Black or Gunmetal Grey, with blacked out engine and stand out for being the only models with cast wheels, compared to the spoked items fitted on all other variants.

The Classic Signals bikes come in either Desert Sand or Marsh Grey, recalling Royal Enfield’s armed forces ties, offering a post-war style theme, including specific decals on the tank.

The Redditch versions will come in Redditch Grey or Redditch Sage Green, with blacked out components, except the engines.

The Halycon models will be available in Gray, Green or Black, all of which are gloss paint, and also run unpainted engines.

Here’s what Siddhartha Lal had to say about the latest iteration of the Royal Enfield 350.

Siddhartha Lal, Managing Director of Eicher Motors Ltd.

“The Classic 350 launched in 2008, was a modern and capable motorcycle that symbolized the timeless post-war styling from the heydays of the British motorcycle industry. Its captivating design language and simplicity coupled with dependability, catapulted the Classic to global popularity, and it went on to redefine the middleweight (250-750cc) motorcycle segment. Through our history, we have been consistent in our pursuit to build timeless, classic, beautiful motorcycles that are great fun to ride, and the new Classic 350 does just that. The all-new Classic 350 beautifully combines this quintessential, timeless design with an absolutely modern and refined ride experience. Built ground-up, on our modern J-series engine, with an all-new chassis, the Classic 350 offers a tremendously refined and impeccable ride experience that  almost feels like riding again for the first time. We’ve paid great attention to every aspect of the motorcycle, right from its stunning look, to the perfection in parts and the touchpoints, to its impeccable riding performance. The supremely well calibrated engine is super smooth, intuitively responsive and engaging, and has that gorgeous growl on acceleration. The all-new chassis inspires enormous confidence while handling and is especially well-mannered in tight traffic situations and around twisty corners. The Classic is by far the most comfortable motorcycle to ride, with plush seating and suspension, and great ergonomics. The motorcycle is, without a doubt, class-leading, and feels incredibly refined and enjoyable to ride. We are confident that the incredibly refined all-new Classic 350 will once again redefine the mid-size motorcycle space globally.”

Smoked Garage Royal Enfield Off/Grid Kits

Smoked Garage have developed Off/Grid kits for the Royal Enfield Himalayan and Interceptor INT 650, inspired by getting out and exploring after a year of lock downs and staring into computer screens. These kits are designed to offer easy modification for those after a custom look.

SG 21 OGHL – Royal Enfield Himalayan

The Himalayan and the SG 21 OGHL aims to amplify the agility and capability of this motorcycle. As such SG have created a slender profile while shedding some weight, which further adds to the bike’s adventurous nature.

Smoked Garage’s SG 21 OGHL Custom Himalayan

The SG 21 OGHL Himalayan features a handlebar mounted headlight cluster, as well as a custom full exhaust system to maximise power. Personalised key and badging with a limited edition serial number add to the unique factor, alongside a split seat and integrated luggage rack.

Knobby tyres promise additional off-road grip, with the overall package painted in a dual tone matte and gloss paint finish. The result is a particularly rugged and stripped back Himalayan.

SG 21 OGIC – Royal Enfield Interceptor 650

The Off/Grid edition built on Royal Enfield’s Interceptor 650 model is designed to combine a pure riding experience with Smoked Garage’s creative vision, with the SG 21 OGIC offering a scrambler themed take on the 650 twin-cylinder Interceptor.

SG describe the 21 OGIC is an iron-clad tank amongst scramblers, equipped with a range of custom enhancements and built to take on almost anything that you can throw at it.

Smoked Garage’s SG 21 OGIC Custom Interceptor 650

Those features include high mounted mudguards for greater clearance, as well as a single sided full exhaust system to boost performance. Like the Himalayan, the Interceptor custom also receives a custom key and limited edition serial number, knobby tyres and unique paint scheme.

The Interceptor retains a lot of the original models looks, but the exhaust system and tasteful mods ensure a tougher overall look, backed by the new tyres and dark themed duco.

Mark ‘FKN’ Hawwa Continental GT 650 Cafe Racer

Royal Enfield also partnered with Mark Hawwa – the founder of Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride for a bolt-on custom build. The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 was treated with some of the best modifiers in Australia to produce a cafe racer look but with a bit more pep to boot. The custom build has been developed with no cutting or welding.

It has been modified with an all-new stainless steel system, enhanced engine power with improved handling and suspension. The seat unit with integrated tail light has been designed for the Royal Enfield and comes with various choices of upholstery colour and stitching.

Autologue Design also sent over a set of their side covers and that unmistakable front fairing, a Reck 2.0, that helps to give the bike its unique appearance.

‘The Living End’ lead Chris Cheney gets motorcycle licence at 46

The Living End rocking on a Royal Enfield

Co-Founder, Guitarist, Songwriter and Lead Vocalist of one of “The Living End”, Melbourne’s Chris Cheney recently took up motorcycling and gained his licence at the ripe young age of 46.

Having lived in Los Angeles for the past few years, Chris and family recently moved back to Melbourne where he just celebrated his 46th Birthday and wife Emma surprised him with a voucher to attain a Motorcycle Learner’s Permit, a long time dream of Chris’. We asked him a few questions about his motorcycle and motorcycling and here’s what he had to say:

What was your first Motorcycling experience?

As far back as I can remember I always had an awareness and love for motorcycles. When My dad was in his 20’s he raced a 500 Manx Norton and travelled around Australia as well as Europe and Spain. He had given up racing long before he had kids but remained an enthusiast. We would travel to Mt Panorama every Easter to watch the motorbike races and they were some of the best memories growing up. The smell and deafening sound of the bikes hurtling around that mountain was incredibly exciting to watch. My hero was Roger Freeth and we always stayed at the same motel he did so I remember meeting him each year and we used to give him Easter eggs.”

Why did you choose the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650?

I’ve always liked the look and sound of old motorcycles, particularly the British 50’s and 60’s style. Motorbikes that actually look and sound like motorbikes, not all plastic and polite. Once I decided to actually get a bike I test rode a couple of Enfields at Mid Life Cycles in Richmond and loved them. The interceptor and GT were right up my alley. I’m a big fan of vintage guitars and Amplifiers and the Enfields just have that same style and feel to me as an an old 1950’s Gretsch guitar. They’re beautifully made but they growl when they need to.”

The Living End rocking on a Royal Enfield

Why did you decide to get your Motorcycle licence at 46?

Better late than never! I think because my dad had raced bikes and had seen first hand the danger attached he never encouraged me! I’ve always been interested in them though but I guess I just never got around to it until now. My wife bought me the 2 day license course and gave me the hand book and was like here you go, go and tick this off the bucket list.

What are the plans for your Motorcycling future?

It’s just a hobby really. I don’t plan on doing long distance travel trips. I like the idea that there’s a whole scene and lifestyle that goes with these bikes, particularly the Royal Enfields. There’s a really great community of like minded people who enjoy the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the cafe racer style.”

What is next for Chris Cheney and The Living End?

The band is going great! We’re lucky to still be doing it and it blows me away that Scott and I started this band when we’re about 14 years old!! Despite not being able to play as much as we’d like due to restrictions etc We just started working on some new material when the pandemic hit so looking forward to getting back into that ASAP. I have a solo album that is getting geared up for release and I’ve been doing some touring with that which has been a blast.
