Third annual WR250R Rally hosts record turnout

Yamaha adventure ride takes place in New South Wales.

A record number of Yamaha WR250Rs turned out for the third annual rally last month, where 62 owners of the tough adventure bike converged in Cessnock, New South Wales, for the two day ride.

Riders congregated at Chris Watsons Motorcycles for a pre-ride BBQ and briefing, with participants coming from as far away as Alice Springs, as well as two travelling from the USA to hire bikes from RideADV organisers.

Trails were varied from wet and muddy, to dry and dusty, and from beautiful lush green forests with red clay surfaces to dry and rocky ride areas around Yengo, Watagan, Corrabare, Werakata, Heaton, Sugarloaf, Pokolbin and Wollombi Forests.

“This was another awesome event for owners of the cult classic adventure bike,” said RideADV’s Greg Yager. “The weather produced some challenging conditions but once again there were few dramas and heaps of happy punters. We’re claiming this as the largest ever gathering of WR250Rs in one place. If anyone knows different, please get in touch with us.”

The WR250R Rally continues to grow as adventure riders tune into the fun of covering big distances on the small yet surprisingly capable motorcycle – and next year’s event is set to smash the current WR250R rider world record.

Diverse KTM Australia Adventure Rallye tours Tasmania

Image: Danny Wilkinson.

A trip of Tasmania for the 2019 KTM Australia Adventure Rallye has been hailed a success, with over 190 adventurers taking part in the five-day event.

Hosted between 24-29 March, there were 158 riders and over 30 support staff taking part, experiencing a wide mixture of conditions – including rain, snow and hail in the opening days – and terrains.

“Tasmania threw everything at us, which was good in the respect that adventure riding’s not necessarily meant to be all sunshine and perfectly-groomed trails,” commented KTM Australia general manager Jeff Leisk.

“It’s a type of riding that is there to test you and that was the great thing about this year’s event, because we had a mix of extreme weather over the first two days coming out of Cradle Mountain – it was really cold and wet – going down the west coast.

“That created a challenge for us all, however it came good once we arrived in Hobart and the sun started shining again. The conditions were nicer and we were able to experience a real diverse mix of terrain and environments.”

The five stages commenced at Cradle Mountain with layovers at Strahan, Hobart, Swansea, St Helens and Launceston along the way, amounting in as many as 1800-kilometres covered for those who incorporated each of the more challenging ‘breakout’ routes.

KTM Enduro Racing Team’s reigning national off-road champion Daniel Milner was a special guest and piloted the brand new KTM 790 Adventure R after it made a surprise appearance at the top of Jacobs Ladder on day four, much to the delight of guests participating in the rallye.

“I was able to experience the new KTM 790 Adventure R, which blew me away,” Milner reflected. “We made it a bit of a surprise for everyone and I was the lucky person who got to ride it, so that was really cool to get a feel for it in those conditions during a rallye.

“The weight is placed really low, so the first thing that I felt was just how nimble it is, but it still has all the strengths and comforts of an adventure bike. I was really impressed and had a great time over the course of the week with everybody at the event one again.”

Keep posted for a complete Destination feature to be posted on the 2019 KTM Australia Adventure Rallye Tasmania. The official preview film of the event is available to view now.

Yamaha Niken awarded ‘Best of the Best’ Red Dot design accolade

Revolutionary LMW motorcycle earns prestigious award.

Image: Supplied.

Yamaha’s revolutionary Niken model has been awarded ‘Best of the Best’ honours in the globally-renowned 2019 Red Dot Awards product design competition.

The Red Dot Design Awards, organised by Germany’s Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, are widely recognised as one of the most prestigious design awards in the world.

Yamaha has received the Red Dot Award for its products over the last eight consecutive years from 2012, and on this occasion, it has also achieved the fourth Yamaha Motor product to be selected as the ‘Best of the Best’. In addition, the achievement marks the second design award received by the Niken following on from the Good Design Award in 2018.

The NIike is a large model Leaning Multi-Wheeler (LMW) with an 845cc liquid-cooled in-line three-cylinder engine. The Niken has been developed using a design that brings unprecedented riding, taking advantage of the features produced by LMW technology which is less susceptible to changes in the riding environment providing a higher degree of stability during turns.

At the core of the design is a look that shows solid ground contact of the front two-wheels, which further emphasises Niken’s sturdy undercarriage. The powerful shoulder area and slim tank designed for knee gripping combination creates a feeling of greater dynamic movement.

With its distinctive LMW-power body design comes the realisation of a sporty athletic performance that challenges the rider to want to take on each curve on winding roads. Click here to learn more about LMW technology.

The annual Tenere Tragics event has celebrated the legendary Yamaha adventure model with its 2019 edition, hosting five-day adventure ride last week in Bathurst, Goulburn, Tumut and Cooma before winding up in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains resort of Thredbo.

Participants were treated to a Yamaha bLU cRU ADV Skills Session with Yamaha legend Stephen Gall staged near Cessnock the day before the run started, where 23 Tragics gained riding instruction that was put to good use over the next five days riding a range of Tenere models, from original 600s right through to new XTZ1200 Super Tenere.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy chief technician and long-time Tenere adventure rider Gary Benn rode up from Victoria to his first event with a special XTZ750 twin fitted with many original Dakar Rally bike parts.

Factor Yamaha Dakar contender Rodney Faggotter made a special guest appearance to ride with the Tragics on the final two days, as Stephen Gall hosted an exclusive Q&A session with Rod at the end of day four at Cooma that offered a unique insight into his recent experience in the 2019 Dakar Rally.

Five first model 1983 XT600ZL Teneres joined the run this year – Dave Bottomley, Neil Asplin, Matt Parker-Charlton, Shane Johnston and organiser Andrew Clubb were the riders of the coveted original model large-tanked singles.

“It’s been another huge week filled with so much Tenere spirit,” said Andrew Club. “The run this year included stacks of the best Tenere riding in central and southern New South Wales, and while conditions were mostly dry, storms late on day two near Crookwell and overnight rain before the start of the final day from Cooma made for ground conditions that were absolutely perfect.

“The Tragics are an awesome pack brought together by the legendary Tenere brand that we celebrate all week long on the Tenere Tragics Run. The planning starts now for next year’s 10th anniversary Tragics run, and you bet the Tragics are pumped that the new Tenere 700 is coming in December!”

Triumph welcomes Balcatta store to national dealer network

Triumph Motorcycles Australia has formally welcomed its latest store, Triumph Balcatta, to its national dealer network by hosting the launch of the Scrambler 1200 and Speed Twin models at the Western Australian location on Tuesday evening.

Triumph UK chairman Lord Digby Jones was in attendance to deliver an engaging speech to riders and customers about the brand, as was Triumph Motorcycles Australia’s managing director Paul Chiodo, who welcomed the Cull family and its dealership to the company, along with presenting the manufacturers latest two models.

“I’m really happy for Strett Cull and the Cull family,” Chiodo told CycleOnline.com.au. “They’ve put in such a big investment and effort into this shop, and to have a great turnout tonight means the customers want to be here, want to engage with the new products and view this new showroom.

“We’ve been talking about this dealership for years, and these projects take forever – it’s been a long time in the making. I’m really happy for them and really proud of what they’ve done. I’m really looking forward to it being a great success – I know it will be – Strett is such a great dealer.”

The Cull family, which has operated one of Australia’s most successful Yamaha dealerships since 1976, is excited to add Triumph’s range of modern classics, cruisers, roadsters and adventure motorcycles to the store’s stunning new showroom.

“It was a matter of partnering with a brand that wasn’t going to diminish what we are doing with Yamaha,” dealer principal Strett Cull explained. “We still bleed blue and are a Yamaha dealership, but Triumph with its range of modern classics and extended range is a different demographic, so it’s about growing the business without hindering our long-standing history with Yamaha.

“These two new models are just couple of a lot of new motorcycles coming out, so we’ve entered in a very green patch. These are two great models released right off the bat, so it’s very exciting times for us.

“We’ve been in this location since 1982 and extended the shop to the unit next door about eight years ago, and now we’ve been able to acquire the last unit and finish it off with Triumph branding – it just gives the whole shop a good look. It’s nice to see people still like riding motorbikes, still want to attend events like tonight and are still excited about it.”
