Disastrous Silverstone BSB season opener for the Aussies

2019 British Superbike
Round One – Silverstone

The opening British Superbike race at Silverstone on the weekend was a battle of the McAMS Yamahas for victory, but it ended in drama as team-mates Jason O’Halloran and Mackenzie went head-to-head on the final lap before O’Halloran was eventually taken out from behind by his team-mate. To add insult to injury O’Halloran’s McAms Yamaha did an engine in the second race, likely due to the tip-over in the opening stoush.

It was also a tale of woe for the bookies favourite for the 2019 British Superbike Championship, Josh Brookes. The 35-year-old suffered an engine failure in qualifying that saw him start from 18th place on the grid, only to then have another machine failure in the opening race. In the second stanza Brookes blew another engine on the Be Wiser Ducati Panigale V4 R to finish the opening round with no points.

Jason O’Halloran launched off the line into the lead of the pack at the start of the race ahead of Mackenzie and Scott Redding, but a crash involving the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki pairing of Glenn Irwin, Ben Currie and rookie David Allingham bought out the BMW Safety Car.

When the race resumed O’Halloran, Mackenzie and Josh Elliott edged away at the front of the pack and the McAMS Yamaha pair were intensely mirroring each other as the O’Show held the advantage.

On the final lap however Mackenzie went for a lunge on the inside, causing contact with O’Halloran, who subsequently crashed out of the race. Mackenzie took the chequered flag ahead of Elliott, claiming his first Bennetts BSB podium finish and Redding on his debut.

Post-race following an investigation, Race Direction imposed a Long Lap equivalent time penalty of 3 seconds on Mackenzie for contact causing O’Halloran to crash at Turn 6 on Lap 30.

Tarran Mackenzie got to celebrate being on the top step of the podium before officials sanctioned him for the crash with O’Halloran, demoting him to second place.

The penalty awarded the victory to Elliott and the first for OMG Racing Suzuki, pushing Mackenzie back into second ahead of Redding with OMG Racing Suzuki celebrating both riders in the top five as Luke Mossey claimed fourth place.

Josh Elliott – OMG Racing Suzuki – Race One Winner

“I am a bit shocked with today if I am honest! It has been a mega weekend and we have been improving all through the weekend. It was mega to be up fighting for the win in both races and I just don’t have words for it! I would never have expected for the weekend to have gone as well as it has. The OMG team have done a fantastic job and I can’t wait for Oulton Park now.”

Tommy Bridewell and Andrew Irwin fought all race long with the Oxford Racing Ducati rider having the edge at the line from Luke Stapleford and Claudio Corti for Team WD-40 Kawasaki. Danny Buchan and Xavi Forés completed the top ten.

Superbike Race Two Report

On the opening lap of race two Mackenzie hit the front of the pack, but he didn’t hold it for long as Dan Linfoot stormed ahead onboard the Santander Salt TAG Yamaha with Elliott in close contention after winning the opening race.

There was more disappointment for O’Halloran who was forced to retire with a technical problem on lap four.

At the front Elliott and Linfoot were scrapping for the lead and the OMG Racing Suzuki rider was able to get back to the front, but behind a collision between Andrew Irwin and Redding caused the Be Wiser Ducati star to crash out on lap six. Andrew Irwin was subsequently handed a Long Lap penalty that dropped him down the order, but he was able to climb back into seventh before the chequered flag.

A breakaway of four riders at the front was led by Elliott with Danny Buchan, Linfoot and Mackenzie giving chase. By lap 14 Mackenzie had grabbed the advantage and was holding off Elliott and Buchan, but the pack was closed up when Josh Brookes suffered a technical problem and was forced to retire the second Be Wiser Ducati out of sixth place, causing a BMW Safety Car intervention.

When the race resumed Mackenzie was immediately under pressure but held on to edge out an advantage over Elliott to score his first win ahead of Elliott and Buchan, who returned to the podium for the first time since Knockhill.

Tarran Mackenzie – McAMS Yamaha – Race Two winner

“To get my first proper victory is amazing. We didn’t have the best pre-season and struggled quite a lot but we found something on Friday that made the bike a little easier to ride and gave me a lot more confidence. It was unfortunate what happened in race one, I tried to put that to the back of my mind and got on with race two. I was gutted to see Jason break down as I genuinely wanted to have a proper race with him. The safety car coming out towards the end of the second race made things more difficult, but I was able to maintain the gap and take the win.”

Bridewell and the Oxford Racing Ducati team celebrated an incredible fourth place after a challenging start to the weekend, holding off Stapleford who continued to fight his way through the field into fifth place ahead of Mossey.

Andrew Irwin held off his team-mate Xavi Forés for seventh with Linfoot and Bradley Ray completing the top ten.

Superbike rookie Ben Currie bagged some points for 13th place ahead of Peter Hickman, Ryan Vickers and Sylvain Barrier.

Pirelli National Superstock 1000

Alex Olsen struck back in the third Pirelli National Superstock 1000 race with a dominant victory. As he did in both races yesterday, it was Richard Cooper who grabbed the holeshot but the series leader was unable to fend off a fast charging Olsen, who moved into the lead on lap six.

Setting a string of fast laps, Olsen was able to stretch a gap to the chasers to take his maiden victory of the season and move in to just four points of the Championship lead. Taylor Mackenzie secured another second place whilst Cooper finished third. Lee Jackson was again fourth whilst Superstock rookie Eemeli Lahti was fifth.

Billy McConnell finished the weekend with a seventh place result while fellow South Australian Levi Day took 12th place. Brayden Elliott finished just outside the points once again in 16th.

Dickies British Supersport

Colin Appleyard Macadam Yamaha rider Jack Kennedy doubled up on Dickies British Supersport wins after an epic scrap in the second outing. Alastair Seeley was the early race leader, grabbing the holeshot but with six riders covered by less than one second for the entire 26 lap race it came down to the very final corner as Kennedy slipped his way past to double on wins.

Despite hitting the grass on the final bend, Seeley was able to hold off the pursuing pack to take another second place whilst Brad Jones was again third in the Supersport class. Kyle Ryde finished third on track to win the GP2 class.

Sam Wilford was fifth overall, second in the GP2 class ahead of Lee Johnston and Jamie Perrin, who completed the GP2 podium.

Tarran Mackenzie on pole for BSB season opener

2019 British Superbike
Round One – Silverstone

Tarran Mackenzie claimed his first pole position in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Silverstone this afternoon, holding off his hard-charging team-mate Jason O’Halloran by 0.054s whilst Scott Redding fired himself onto the front row ahead of his BSB race debut tomorrow (Sunday).

There was a dramatic start to the opening Datatag Qualifying session of the season for Josh Brookes, who suffered a technical problem with his Be Wiser Ducati, causing a brief red flag delay and the 2015 champion will start 18th on the grid for tomorrow’s opening race.

It was a close battle to qualify for Q2 with 24 riders covered by just 0.728s and the first rider to narrowly miss out was Quattro Plant – JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Ben Currie in the closing seconds of the opening session.

In Q2 there was another incredible battle to be inside the top nine to qualify for the final Q3 stage; the Honda Racing pairing narrowly missed out on making the cut, just 0.056s putting Andrew Irwin the first in the drop zone adrift of Christian Iddon, who held ninth for Tyco BMW.

SBK Josh Elliott

When Q3 got underway Mackenzie was straight out of pitlane and instantly on the attack for a flying lap, setting the benchmark early ahead of O’Halloran and Josh Elliot as OMG Racing Suzuki qualified for the final qualifying stage for the first time.

Redding meanwhile had been building momentum during his first Datatag Qualifying experience and he moved into sixth, before a final attack put him into third and on the front row ahead of his much-anticipated race debut.

Elliot was able to hold off his team-mate Luke Mossey to head the second row as the OMG Racing Suzuki celebrated their strongest qualifying performances to date ahead of Dan Linfoot on the Santander Salt TAG Yamaha.

Tommy Bridewell and the Oxford Racing Ducati team will start in seventh place after their hard work to rebuild the stricken machine after yesterday’s crash with Christian Iddon and Luke Stapleford completing the top nine.

Tarran Mackenzie – P1

“It feels really good to be on pole position as I didn’t have the best pre-season really. I felt good on the bike but I just wasn’t that fast, so coming here after the test I was a bit more confident. In Q2 the bike felt perfect so I felt happy going into Q3, I didn’t expect pole position so this is awesome and I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Scott Redding – P3

“If you are an adrenaline junkie that was exactly what you want to do – for me that was insane! I am used to one qualifying session and then maybe a second one. You don’t want to make a mistake in Q1 but then in Q3 you just close your eyes and go all in. That was so much adrenaline and I am super happy with that. I was a bit nervous to start with but this system is amazing as you can get clear laps at the end. I wanted to go for the pole position, that was my mindset and I think how it was for everyone. Unfortunately it wasn’t me today but it is a good start to my season.”

Round One – Silverstone

The McAMS Yamaha begins BSB 2019 strongly with young Tarran Mackenzie setting the initial benchmark ahead of Team WD-40 Kawasaki’s Claudio Corti and Scott Redding, but Josh Brookes was gaining momentum after setting the pace in FP1.

Jason O’Halloran went to the top of the times ahead of Mackenzie and Corti with 20-minutes remaining but it was Dan Linfoot who climbed the order into second in the final five minutes for the Santander Salt TAG Yamaha team to split the McAMS Yamaha team-mates with Luke Mossey inching into the top five.

Mossey was then on the move and he moved into second, just adrift of O’Halloran who continued to improve his pace with Christian Iddon again showing the pace of the new Tyco BMW to edge into the top five.

In the final three minutes Mackenzie improved again; moving into second where he would stay until the end of the session as his team-mate had the edge with Mossey completing the top three for OMG Racing Suzuki.

Jason O’Halloran confirms pace at Silverstone BSB Test

BSB Silverstone Test

Jason O’Halloran fired himself back to the top of the timesheets at Silverstone today overnight, pushing ahead of his former team-mate Dan Linfoot in the last ten-minutes of the final official pre-season test.

The Australian was able to hold off the challenges from his rivals to have the edge for McAMS Yamaha ahead of the much-anticipated Bennetts British Superbike Championship opener in ten days’ time.

O’Halloran held an advantage of 0.044s at the chequered flag, carrying his strong form from the previous official tests into Silverstone, which kicks off the season over Easter weekend (April 19/20/21).

“We’ve had a really good pre-season. All the guys in the McAMS Yamaha team have done a great job. From Monteblanco to Portimao and now today, the first time I’ve ridden the bike in the UK, everything has gone really well. It was nice to get back on to a UK circuit and confirm our pace as sometimes European tracks in high temperatures can be a little misleading when you come back to the cold British tracks! It’s nice to leave here on top heading into next weekend, now it gets serious!”

Linfoot showed strongly on his first official test appearance with the Santander Salt TAG Yamaha team, holding off the 2015 champion Josh Brookes, who had topped the previous session on the leading Be Wiser Ducati.

The improvements in the final stages of the session displaced Luke Mossey into fourth place, the OMG Racing Suzuki rider holding a position at the top of the times earlier in the afternoon with Luke Stapleford closing in to complete the top five for Buildbase Suzuki.

Andrew Irwin led the Honda Racing charge in sixth place, improving to push the second OMG Racing Suzuki rider, Josh Elliot, into seventh place ahead of Tarran Mackenzie and Xavi Forés.

Scott Redding completed the top ten on his return to Silverstone, on the shorter National circuit by comparison to what he has previously experience in MotoGP, nudging Danny Buchan and Glenn Irwin for the 2018 title-winning Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki team, outside the top ten.

Ben Currie continued his adaption to the Superbike category on the JG Speedfit Kawasaki and ended the day 15th in the 30 strong field.

In Superstock 1000 Billy McConnell was third quickest while Alex Olsen topped the timesheets. Levi Day was fourth while Brayden Elliott was just outside the top 20 as he starts to shakedown his new mount for the season.

Jason O’Halloran tops final day of BSB Testing at Portimao

BSB 2019 Portimao Test

Jason O’Halloran saved his best until last on the final day of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship official test at Portimao, posting the fastest time of the test with his final run of the day in the closing ten minutes to push Scott Redding back into second by 0.127s.

The final day started with OMG Racing Suzuki holding the top three positions with Tommy Bridewell on the Oxford Racing Ducati, who also had a spell at the top, splitting Josh Elliot and Luke Mossey before Xavi Forés moved to the top of the times after the first hour.

Forés and Redding then locked out the leading two positions, as the pair prepare for their debut season in Bennetts BSB, but as the chequered flag went out to end the morning session it was the Be Wiser Ducati rider who had edged ahead by 0.339s.

When the test resumed this afternoon Bridewell was back on track for a longer run and he was able to move to within 0.177s of Redding and Forés with Elliot and Andrew Irwin completing the top five.

O’Halloran meanwhile had taken the second McAMS Yamaha of Tarran Mackenzie for a run whilst his team-mate sat out the final afternoon after completing his workload and still feeling sore from his crash earlier in the week.

Josh Brookes had been working through various changes on the second Be Wiser Ducati, before a run later this afternoon which put him fourth fastest on the times and the Australian ended his day early as he now prepares for the next official test at Silverstone.

As the final 30 minutes of the day arrived Redding, Forés and Brookes had the advantage at the top of the times, with the majority completing their test before the closing stages, however after moving into seventh O’Halloran returned to the garage and then went for one final time attack.

The McAMS Yamaha rider went for one final exit and was able to better his time to move to the top of the times, pushing Redding into second and Forés into third.

Jason O’Halloran

“That was exactly what we needed to end this test. We had a difficult end to Monteblanco because although we were fast, we had a few issues with the bike. We changed the frame there and it became really aggressive so we persevered with it here. I went out on Taz’s bike and his was completely different. I sat out a bit this afternoon whilst the boys changed the frame for me and when I went back out it felt immediately better. I did a run on old tyres and did my best time on the used tyres and then I came in and we put some new tyres in and I went out to have a bit of a go. It got me up front and I am feeling confident now heading to Silverstone and being up the sharp end.”

Bridewell held fourth as the Oxford Racing Ducati team continued their programme with the new Ducati V4 R, remaining ahead of Brookes and Elliot with Danny Buchan climbing to seventh in the final stages of the day.

Glenn Irwin was the leading Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki in eighth, making progress with the 2019 specification bike, narrowly edging out his brother Andrew and Mossey completing the top ten.

Alastair Seeley was also testing in Portugal, the Ulsterman will ride a Be Wiser Ducati V4R at the North West 200 this season. He was a little over two-seconds off the pace but learned valuable lessons about the new Ducati.

South Australian Billy McConnell was the fastest of the Superstock riders present.

Scott Redding tops opening day of BSB Testing at Portimao

BSB 2019 Portimao Test Day One

Be Wiser Ducati’s Scott Redding claimed the fastest time at the official BSB Official Test at Portimao on Day 1 from Honda Racing’s Xavi Forés, with only 0.026s separating the two, despite a crash earlier in the day leaving Redding on the back foot.

Forés was fast straight out of the blocks, putting his track knowledge to good use to maintain a position at the top of the times throughout the day, before he was pipped in the closing stages by Redding.

Redding had been inside the top five before lunch, but a crash at turn five ended his morning session prematurely, whilst Josh Brookes climbed the order to third in the final ten minutes, nudging Tommy Bridewell down to fourth.

Andrew Irwin had a strong opening day on the second Honda Racing Fireblade, holding a position inside the top three before ending the day in fifth place as Brookes and Bridewell improved in the final 20 minutes.

Tarran Mackenzie didn’t attempt a time attack in the closing stages of the day, but his earlier time put him sixth fastest ahead of Team WD-40’s Claudio Corti and Luke Mossey, who had been running inside the top five earlier in the day.

Jason O’Halloran had been making strides forward in the afternoon with the McAMS Yamaha but a crash in the afternoon at turn 13 when he lost the front sidelined him from the remainder of the day despite being uninjured. Danny Buchan completed the top ten for FS3-Racing Kawasaki.

Ben Currie continued his Superbike learning curve to finish the opening day 13th quickest while Billy McConnell trailed Gary Johnson in the Superstock 1000 ranks.

Redding leads O’Halloran to wrap Monteblanco BSB test

BSB Monteblanco combined times in

Be Wiser Ducati rider Scott Redding pipped Aussie Jason O’Halloran by 0.193 to lead day three of testing and wrap up the final overall combined times at Circuito Monteblanco, where the final day of sessions ended up a Ducati vs Yamaha affair.

The pair had been holding the leading positions on the final day and both riders continued to make improvements towards the end of the day, with O’Halloran closing in on Redding before the Be Wiser Ducati rider made another gain in his time to keep the McAMS Yamaha rider at bay.

Tarran Mackenzie on the second of the McAMS Yamahas overcame his huge high-side crash from yesterday to hold third place; he returned to the track today and improved his pace on the final day as he worked on further improvements with the team.

Glenn Irwin and the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki continued to work through various winter improvements and he held fourth place on the timesheets, whilst team-mate Ben Currie suffered a heavy crash in the morning so he sat out the remainder of the day.

Xavi Forés continued to impress with Honda Racing as he held fifth and admitted he was impressed with the pace despite missing the chance to have another attack at flying lap in the closing stages of the final day.

Bradley Ray and the Buildbase Suzuki team had worked on further improvements on the areas they struggled with last season, which put him ahead of Honda Racing’s Andrew Irwin who continued to build momentum on his second visit to Monteblanco.

Josh Brookes was eighth fastest on the timesheets, the former champion struggled in the afternoon with sickness which hampered his progress on the final day, but the Australian is confident of the Be Wiser Ducati’s potential.

Luke Mossey maintained his position inside the top ten on his official test debut for OMG Racing Suzuki, holding off hard-charging rookie Ryan Vickers who impressed with a top ten finish on his debut with the RAF Regular and Reserve Kawasaki team.

Victorian Ben Currie did not set any times on the remaining day with his Thursday afternoon session time of 1:38.197 positioning him overall 17th in BSB and some 1.906 off of the combined times leader Scott Redding.

South Australia Billy Mcconnell riding an OMG Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 was 21st overall and second in the Superstock class trailing leader Richard Cooper by 0.986 with a time of 1:39.527 achieved on the penultimate session on the final day of testing.

BSB will resume testing starting tomorrow in Portimao, Portugal.

Jason O’Halloran tops day two of BSB Testing in Spain

Bennetts British Superbike Championship
Monteblanco, Official Test, Day Two

Jason O’Halloran topped the second day of testing at Monteblanco ahead of tomorrow’s final day of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship official test at the Spanish circuit, improving his pace to hold off a late attack at the top from Glenn Irwin and Scott Redding.

Glenn Irwin had led the early stages of day two from Xavi Forés, but Tarran Mackenzie was soon moving up the order. The McAMS Yamaha rider launched to the top of the timesheets shortly before lunch but a high-side ended his day early as he sat out the afternoon session ready to re-join the action tomorrow.

In the final 20 minutes before the lunch break though O’Halloran was on the move and his run of laps put him ahead of Redding.

After lunch the Spanish sunshine meant several riders opted to wait until the track conditions had cooled, with O’Halloran upping the pace again in the closing stages to claim the top spot, despite a last lap run from Glenn Irwin who fired the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki into second, nudging Redding into third.

Jason O’Halloran

“Today was a really good day, it feels like every time we head out on the bike we find an improvement. This morning we worked a little more on refining the new forks we tried yesterday afternoon and then after lunch we went out with the new swingarm and links.

“It takes a bit of time to fine tune things, but every time we went out we went quicker. I did a couple of 1’36s today, four or five of them and feel really comfortable on the bike. We’ll keep working tomorrow, when we’ve got a frame to test which is probably the biggest thing we’ll test over this period so we need to see whether that’s a step forward.”

Mackenzie held on to fourth place despite sitting out the afternoon, narrowly ahead of Forés and Luke Mossey who had held a position inside the top five during the morning session for OMG Racing Suzuki.

Josh Brookes climbed to seventh on his final run of the day on the second of the Be Wiser Ducatis ahead of Claudio Corti for Team WD-40 Kawasaki.

Andrew Irwin, who had also been inside the top five earlier in the day held ninth for Honda Racing with Buildbase Suzuki’s Bradley Ray completing the top ten.

Ben Currie is adapting to the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki Superbike and ended day two in 15th place.

South Australia’s Billy McConnell was 21st quickest overall, and the second quickest of the Superstock competitors taking part in the test.

Brayden Elliott, is not at the test, but announced overnight his intention to  continue to run his privateer team throughout the 2019 British Superstock season however, he will run alongside and with support from CPE Motosport throughout race weekends feeding off their extensive knowledge.

Brayden Elliott

“I am extremely fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to run my own team NO BULL Racing amongst the British Superbike Championship, however taking on this role has certainly been challenging. For this reason, CPE Motosport and myself started discussions about joining forces for our 2019 campaign. I met up with the team in 2018 to lock in a plan of attack and although I’ve been in Australia it’s been a breath of fresh air having CPE Motosport helping out with pre-season preparations.  It’s great that I will be on familiar machinery riding my Suzuki GSX-R 1000 for a second season with a great group of people around me. I’m very thankful to have Simon Stevens in my corner and on the tools throughout race weekends this season, also to be working with John Crockford. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to have a rider coach and also a team member to check data, I’m really excited to start working together. I’m positive Simon’s experience managing teams and John’s experience as a rider and coach will be a great match for this season.”

Scott Redding tops opening day of BSB pre-season testing

2019 BSB Test
Monteblanco Day One

Former Aprilia Gresini Racing and Pramac Ducati MotoGP rider Scott Redding made and impressive start as the 2019 Bennetts British Superbike Championship kicked off today (Wednesday) with the opening day of official testing at Monteblanco in Spain. The Be Wiser Ducati Panigale V4 rider set the benchmark pace, toppling fellow debutant Xavi Forés by 0.169s with Jason O’Halloran also cutting the advantage on his final run in third.

The opening day of BSB testing got underway on a glorious sunny spring day at the Spanish circuit with Forés setting an early pace and holding the position on his second visit to the track as he prepares for his debut season in Bennetts BSB.

Redding though had been chipping away and on his penultimate run of the day he moved ahead of his Spanish rival with a string of faster laps as the Ducati V4R debuted for the first time in Bennetts BSB.

Forés improved in the closing ten minutes of the last session of the day as he completed his final run of laps, but it wasn’t enough to relegate Redding from leading the time sheets on close.

Redding said:

“It has been a good first day here in Monteblanco and have had great fun on the bike, understanding a lot of things and the team have been amazing – we have gelled really well. I actually miss them from the last test so it has been a relief after a long wait and I am looking forward to tomorrow to actually test some things on the bike, working with the new engine and the electronics to find the best ways. Day one is done and I am really happy and can’t wait to get back out tomorrow.”

Australian O’Halloran demonstrated that he was adapting well to his McAMS Yamaha YZF-R1M, closing in on Redding and Forés in the final minutes and only ending up 0.321s the leader Redding.

Danny Buchan saved his best until his last run of the day onboard his FS-3 Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R as he claimed fourth, pushing back the OMG Racing Suzuki GSXR piloted Luke Mossey in the closing minutes of the day.

Tarran Mackenzie made it both McAMS Yamahas inside the top ten as he posted the sixth fastest time ahead of Claudio Corti who had been riding impressively until a unfortunate ended his charge crash, but he was unhurt and able to finish the day.

Glenn Irwin led the Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki assault as the title-winning team bid to retain their crown, he was marginally faster than his younger brother Andrew on the Honda Racing Fireblade with Josh Brookes completing the top ten.

While the Ducati 999 was not highly regarded in the marketplace (due entirely to its looks, not performance), that did not hinder the bike’s success as a race machine.

While styling left some in the cold for the consumer models, the race machines were highly successful

Introduced for the 2003 season it scored a debut 1-2 finish at Valencia with Neil Hodgson and Ruben Xaus.

The model then went on to win the Riders’ title for Hodgson (’03), James Toseland (’04) and Troy Bayliss (’06).

It also helped Ducati to win three Manufacturers’ titles, for the same years.
