Husqvarna transition all but confirmed for Duffy

It appears Regan Duffy’s move to Husqvarna is all but confirmed, with the reigning MXD champion set to step up to the MX2 category in this year’s MXstore MX Nationals.

The 17-year-old, who represented Australia at the Motocross of Nations last year, has recently been publicly racing Husqvarna machinery in the same colours as Todd Waters in his home state of Western Australia.

It further shapes the self-operated squad that’s set to be officially announced by MX1 champion Waters, who’s already showcased elements of the team after contesting the first two stops of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship.

Waters hasn’t disclosed the exact details of the operation, although strong BerrySweet branding – a long-time sponsor of both Waters and Duffy – on the bikes of both riders suggests the WA-based company will serve as a major backer of the duo.

It’s still unclear if Newry will host round one of the MX Nationals in May after Horsham’s season-opener was postponed last week due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, with all national races up until June under review by Motorcycling Australia.

Purvis clinches MX2 championship at season-finale.

Kirk Gibbs has claimed a second-career MX1 title in the New Zealand Motocross Championship after finishing runner-up at the final round in Taupo over the weekend.

The JCR Altherm Yamaha rider defeated defending champion and round winner Cody Cooper (Honda Racing) by a slender four points in the title chase, the Australian securing 50 percent of race wins from 12 starts.

“It’s so awesome to win the championship again,” said Gibbs, who also claimed the title in 2018. “To come so close last year and just miss out was disappointing. Everything just went really well for me this season and things started clicking for me.

“I was riding well and the Yamaha YZ450 was great. Working hard with Josh during the weeks between the four rounds and with my Australian team helped me to feel really comfortable and strong, which was what I believe led to the championship win.”

The MX2 title was taken out by fellow JCR Altherm Yamaha rider Max Purvis, while Australian Caleb Ward (CML KTM) was fifth in the standings.

Wakefield Park ASBK round set to run without spectators

Wakefield Park ASBK round set to run without spectators

Status of the second round subject to change due to coronavirus outbreak.

Wakefield Park’s second round of the 2020 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) is set go ahead as a TV-only event, Motorcycling Australia (MA) has revealed.

Organisers are looking to put measures in place to keep within the 500 person limit that the government has placed on mass gatherings and events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While subject to change in the lead up to the 27-29 March event, it’s understood the ASBK is cooperating with the venue to reduce expenses, while its TV package and partnerships still make it viable according to MA CEO Peter Doyle.

“ASBK at Wakefield Park, as of right now as we’re speaking, is running, but it will be a TV race only,” Doyle stated to CycleOnline.com.au. “There will be no spectators and the number of people within teams let into the track might be restricted.

“As far as a race goes, Wakefield Park wants it to run – as long we can stay under the 500 [person] mass gathering, then it will run. With an ASBK event, we’re cooperating with the track and have been able to save a lot of expenses – it also has good sponsors and partners, so it’s worthwhile going and running a TV event.”

Further rounds of the ASBK series could be either postponed or cancelled altogether in the coming months, with The Bend – to be hosted alongside the Asia Road Racing Championship and Asia Talent Cup – and Wanneroo rounds each currently ‘under review’.

National events under review by MA as further postponements loom

MX Nationals, AORC and A4DE races to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Image: Foremost Media.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is currently reviewing the status of nationals events through to June, as it responds to further restrictions on travel and mass-gatherings imposed by the government due to the coronavirus.

MA insists it’s committed to conducting as many events during the next three months as possible, and is moving to implement the guidelines, requirements and regulations as defined by the various national and state governments.

A selection of MA permitted events will be able to continue without spectators or where they involve fewer than the recommended 500-person limit for mass-gatherings, while with other events, the significant financial impact on the clubs or promoters won’t make it viable. In this case MA supports postponement or cancellation as needed.

At this stage, Horshmam’s MXstore MX Nationals season-opener as already been postponed to the second half of the year, while rounds three and four at Newry in Victoria and Gympie in Queensland are under review.

Nowra’s fifth and sixth rounds of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) are also under review, as is the Australian Four-Day Enduro (A4DE) in Victoria.

The current MotoGP World Championship is a possibility to be extended into the early months of 2021 according to FIM president Jorge Viegas.

Viegas anticipates even more MotoGP rounds will be cancelled or postponed as the ongoing coronavirus continues to see further restrictions on travel and large-scale events.

At this stage, the MotoGP class will commence its championship on 3 May at Jerez in Spain, however further delays could be made in the coming weeks and months.

“[I] imagine that several events have yet to be cancelled and that we have to resume racing much later,” Viegas stated in an interview with La Tribune de Geneve.

“We will go as far as it takes to keep championships worthy of the name. If it is necessary, we will go until January 2021. For us, it is not taboo.”

The series needs to complete as least 13 rounds to permit a world championship. A number of calendar changes have already been made.

E1 leader Styke understanding in Sunday Dungog AORC cancellation

E1 leader Styke understanding in Sunday Dungog AORC cancellation

Factory Yamaha pilot promoted to top of the E1 standings with Saturday win.

Yamaha Active8 Yamalube Racing’s Luke Styke has taken an understanding stance on the decision to cancel Sunday’s fourth round of the 2020 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in Dungog, New South Wales.

Poor weather conditions that rolled in during Saturday’s third round only intensified overnight, leaving officials to deem Sunday’s racing as unsafe and ultimately abandoned the scheduled sprint tests.

While admittedly disappointed, Styke, who earned the E1 points lead after claiming victory on Saturday, explained the tests would’ve been difficult to navigate for riders and in particular medical staff.

“I was able to have a good run and win on Saturday,” Styke commented. “It was disappointing that we couldn’t race Sunday but the amount of rain we had meant completing the course and getting medical to all areas would be difficult, so the decision was made to call it off and I completely understand it.

“The tests on the weekend were good and we were fortunate to get the majority of them done before the rain came. I have got the points lead back now and the plan is to not let it go until the championship is done.”

The AORC will head to Nowra in New South Wales on 18-19 April.
