Wakefield test initially a ‘challenging time’ for pace-setter Maxwell

Boost Mobile Racing rider tops the times in unofficial ASBK test.

Points leader Wayne Maxwell says the unofficial ASBK test at Wakefield Park was initially a ‘challenging time’, however he was able to discover a setting that enabled him to set the pace.

The Boost Mobile Racing rider, who was untouchable at Phillip Island’s opener, set a 57.279s to top the times during the two days, where he edged out Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team) for top spot.

The Ducati pilot was pleased to exit the New South Wales venue with a strong setting, admitting he was left scratching his head during the early stages of testing.

“Obviously Wakefield Park is on the complete opposite end of the scale to Phillip Island,” Maxwell told CycleOnline.com.au. “We had a test plan in mind – some of the stuff worked, some of it didn’t.

“It was probably the most challenging time I’ve had and it left me scratching my head, but full credit to the Boost Mobile Racing team – we stuck to the plan and came out with the result that we set out to achieve.

“Wakefield is a circuit I’ve never won an overall at, so I’d be keen to win an overall there. Troy’s [Herfoss] is so good there and Cru [Halliday] is in great form and he’s really good at Wakefield, so I think we’ll have a great race between the three of us and the competitive ASBK field.”

Former EWC regular Broc Parkes was third on the timesheets filling in for Aiden Wagner at Yamaha Racing Team, while the top five was completed by Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing) and Glenn Allerton (Maxima BMW). Wakefield Park’s second round is scheduled for 27-29 March.

Reigning champion Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) has completed the final day of MotoE World Cup testing in Jerez by topping the timesheets, setting a best lap of 1m47.494s on the final day to head the combined timesheets.

Eric Granado’s (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) 1m47.546s on day two placed the Brazilian a close second, with MotoE rookie Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) impressing to finish third overall in his first event on the Energica Ego Corsa.

At the end of the three days in Andalucia, the top eight were covered by just eight tenths and only 1.2 seconds split the top 14 as MotoE got off to a competitive start in 2020.

2019 Cup runner-up Bradley Smith (WithU Motorsport) was fourth fastest at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto, the British rider sitting 0.379s off Ferrari’s pace. Five riders managed to dip into the 1:47s and the last of those was Octo Pramac MotoE’s Alex De Angelis, the Sammarinese rider ending the test 0.450s from the top.

Xavier Simeon (LCR E-Team) was sixth fastest, he and fellow sophomore Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) heading eighth place Niki Tuuli (Avant Ajo MotoE) as the Finn continues to recover from recent surgery to remove screws put in after his injury last year. Octo Pramac MotoE’s Josh Hook and rookie Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) completed the top 10 as 2020 sparked to life.

Throughout the official test the MotoE class were testing new tyres from Michelin, as well as new Ohlins forks and new airflow cooling for the batteries, which helps the Energica Ego Corsas charge quicker too.

Additional scans have revealed further injuries for Zach Osborne, ruling him out of the remainder of the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross series.

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider initially suffered a broken rib, two bruised lungs and a sprained wrist in a practice crash ahead of the Atlanta Supercross.

However, further medical checks have determined he has in fact sustained three compression fractures in his back, as well a fractured wrist. He’s hopeful of lining up at Hangtown’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross opener.

“Unfortunately I received some rough news this week about my current injuries,” Osborne said in a statement. “I was originally told at the hospital I that I had one broken rib, two bruised and partially collapsed lungs and a sprained wrist. After two weeks of significant discomfort from what I thought was a broken rib, I was advised to get more checks.

“I underwent an MRI on my abdomen which revealed three compression fractures in my back as well as two other fractures. An x-ray on my wrist showed a small fracture as well. I’m not sure how all of this was missed at my original hospital visit but it’s nice to have some answers and to be moving forward and closer to being back to my normal self.

“I’m grateful for all the people around me and their support through what has been a very tough year for me. The plan for now is to get well and be back to 100 percent health for the opening outdoor national at Hangtown.”

Amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the Indianapolis round this weekend, followed by the Seattle stop at the end of the month, have been cancelled.

Horsham’s MX Nationals postponed amid coronavirus concerns

Horsham’s MX Nationals postponed amid coronavirus concerns

Australian championship hopeful to commence at Newry in May.

Image: Foremost Media.

The promoter of the MXstore MX Nationals has confirmed Horsham’s season-opener has been postponed in anticipation of further restrictions on major events due to the coronavirus.

The decision has been made collectively with Motorcycling Australia and FIM Oceania, who’ve been constantly monitoring the situation in Australia and have preemptively delayed round one in Victoria, initially planned for 4-5 April, in an effort to reduce inconvenience and financial strain on riders, teams, clubs and fans.

It’s understood the series is hopeful of commencing at Newry in Victoria on 3 May, although it will continue to evaluate the situation in the country. The Horsham round is likely to be slotted in at a later stage in the season, with the calendar understood to be in a position to be moved around to make way for any changes.

“Since World Superbikes, we’ve been in discussions with Motorcycling Australia keeping up to date with their position and the FIM’s position, clearly it’s escalating,” MX Nationals promoter Kevin Williams told MotoOnline.com.au. “Obviously the announcement today of the FIM has pushed back their calendar, there’s the AMA pushing back – globally, everyone is addressing it.

“There’s an underlying feeling that the government could move to restrict events with a capacity of over 1000-1500 people. We don’t have broadcast rights that would allow us to continue to run a race without a crowd – the clubs and the sport need the spectators. We’ve made the decision with MA – obviously, the first round has international elements with the Tri-Nations Cup – so we know everyone is doing it tough financially, and the coming months are going to be tough on people.

“We wanted to make an informed decision with first and foremost the health of everyone – riders, spectators, family and friends, and also the community. When you go to regional areas, they’ve got limited medical services – a lot of things have been taken into consideration. Prevention is better than cure, and as a sport and a championship, we want to be proactive in the whole communities concerns.

“We’ve made the decision now, rather than be forced to make the decision and have people spend a fair amount of money and not have the opportunity to get it back – or spend money they really can’t afford to come to an event that may not be able to run.

“We made the decision today, and like everybody, we’re reviewing it on a daily and weekly basis from a business perspective. Motorcycling Australia, FIM Oceania and myself have been in discussion since the World Superbikes on a regular basis reviewing it, and we’ve collectively made the decision today in the interest of the sport and the communities in which we travel to, and to our competitors and fans.”

Horsham’s MX Nationals is the first Australian motorcycling event to be postponed or cancelled, while globally, there’s been cancellations and postponements in the MXGP World Championship and Monster Energy Supercross series’. This weekend’s Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix was cancelled this morning, with more sporting events around the country expected to follow suit.

Indianapolis cancelled amid ban on ‘non-essential gatherings’

Coronavirus makes further impact on Monster Energy Supercross series.

Image: Octopi Media.

A ban imposed on non-essential gatherings of over 250 people by the Governor of Indiana has forced promoters of Monster Energy Supercross to cancel the 11th round this weekend in Indianapolis.

It comes a day after the Seattle Supercross was cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, with the 13th round to be rescheduled elsewhere. It’s unclear if the Indianapolis stop will be rescheduled at an alternative venue at a later date.

“This is a time when we must do all we can to reduce the spread of COVID-19, protect our most vulnerable populations and reduce their potential to acquire or spread this virus,” said Governor Eric Holcomb.

“While some actions are drastic, now, not later, is the time to act. Today I’m initiating: Non-essential gatherings must be limited to no more than 250 people.”

“I fully expect there will be additional actions warranted in the coming days. Just as we have since the beginning of the year, we are working with partners at all levels to secure all necessary resources for any escalation of this virus.”

The coronavirus outbreak has caused a number of motorcycling events to be cancelled or postponed, with the MXGP World Championship already making a number of major changes to its calendar.

Increased restrictions on large-scale events in a number of Washington counties due to the coronavirus has prompted promoters of Monster Energy Supercross to cancel Seattle’s stop on 28 March, while it’s understood the 13th round will be rescheduled.

The decision comes in accordance with the governor’s restrictions on group gatherings in King County amid coronavirus concerns, which has banned events with an attendance of over 250 people.

The Seattle round is the first Supercross venue to be impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, with a number of global motorcycle events, including the MXGP World Championship, already cancelling or postponing events.

SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki revealed a new-look line-up for the 2020 MXstore MX Nationals and Australian Supercross Championship, confirming the signing of Connor Tierney and Brodie Ellis.

Tierney, 21, will pilot the Suzuki RM-Z450 after campaigning in the premier class outdoors last year, where a health issue saw him complete just the back half of the season.

“It’s great to be a part of the SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki team,” Tierney commented. “It’s been a really smooth transition to the RM-Z450, I feel like the bike’s handling really compliments my riding style well.

“We’ve been working hard with the team and Steve from SPMX to get everything dialled in for me. I’m healthy, feeling fit and can’t wait to head to Horsham.”

Tasmanian Ellis will graduate to the MX2 category in 2020 aboard the Suzuki RM-Z250, the 19-year-old coming off a promising year in MXD that saw him claim multiple podium results.

“I’m excited to step up to MX2 this year with the support from SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki team and Cycleworld Suzuki,” Ellis said. “The bike and team have both been awesome so far, I’m really looking forward to round one and getting the season started.”

SB Motorsports team owner Scott Brewster shared his excitement in welcoming Tierney and Ellis to the squad for the 2020 race season, and believes that this year will see continued growth and successes in their second year as a Suzuki-backed effort.

“We are very pleased to be able to finally announce that Connor and Brodie will be joining us this year,” Brewster stated. “As a team, we had a great first season with Suzuki last year with a string of podium finishes and we aim to build upon that this year with the boys.”

The MX Nationals kicks off on 4-5 April at Horsham in Victoria.

Pramac Racing’s Hook winds up 10th on the timesheets.

Eric Granado (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) went fastest for the second-consecutive day of FIM Enel MotoE World Cup testing at Jerez, with a 1m47.546s enough to see him edge out nearest challenger and 2019 Cup winner Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) by just 0.098s.

Alex De Angelis (Octo Pramac MotoE) completed the top three, into the 1m48s as the timesheets tightened up behind the duo at the top.

Granado and Ferrari were, therefore, the only two riders to dip below the 1m47s barrier on Wednesday, with the Brazilian finding around eight tenths on his previous best as the grid continue to get to grips with a few updates for 2020.

Xavier Simeon (LCR E-Team) was fourth quickest on day two in Andalucia with a best of 1m48.294s, moving up from having ended Tuesday outside the top five, with 2019 Cup runner-up Bradley Smith (WithU Motorsport) shuffled down a couple of places to take P5 on day two, his quickest a 1m48.451s.

Niki Tuuli (Avant Ajo MotoE) continued his return from injury and surgery in P6, the Finn impressing again and just getting the better of Niccolo Canepa (LCR E-Team) on Wednesday. Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) slipped down to eighth on day two.

Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP), meanwhile, took ninth. The Swiss rider was once again the fastest rookie, and ended the day just ahead of Australian Josh Hook (Octo Pramac MotoE), who completed the top 10.
