Wilson chances ‘slim’ for Hangtown Pro Motocross start

Factory Husqvarna pilot still recovering from shoulder injury.

Former 250MX champion Dean Wilson believes his chances of making Hangtown’s Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship opener are slim as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.

Wilson was fighting for position when a rare mechanical malfunction struck his FC 450 at Denver’s supercross while negotiating a rhythm section, prompting him to crash heavily and sustaining shoulder damage in the process.

Confirming he’ll remain with the factory Husqvarna squad for the outdoor series, Wilson has declared he’s doing everything possible to make round one, although he acknowledges it will be unlikely.

“I have been doing all I can to get back to 100 percent doing my therapy/training and all sorts of remedies, but sometimes the body just needs to do its thing and heal,” Wilson explained. “The goal was to be at the first round of outdoors but chances of that may be slim.

“I will be on the factory Rockstar Husky team all summer for those asking. Taking this day by day as it’s very frustrating – I want to be out there so bad. I will come back when I can!”

Wilson started the year out as a privateer aboard Husqvarna machinery, however was drafted back into the factory team after Jason Anderson was ruled out with injury. The team has since signed him for the entire Pro Motocross championship.

Gibbs anticipating to be fit for Manjimup 15,000 alongside Clout

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy duo confirmed for Western Australian event.

Former Australian motocross champion Kirk Gibbs is anticipating to be fit for the 2019 Manjimup 15,000 in Western Australia on 1-2 June, where he’ll be joined by CDR Yamaha Monster Energy teammate Luke Clout.

Gibbs sustained a title-ending shoulder injury at the weekend’s Pirelli MX Nationals double-header in Murray Bridge, which saw him sit out Sunday’s racing after enduring the heavy fall in the final moto of Saturday’s fourth round.

The number five is confident his shoulder will be at an adequate level for the prestigious motocross race, which he has won three occasions, and currently sits one victory shy of matching the all-time win record shared by current boss Craig Dack and former team manager Jay Marmont.

“I have done Manjimup a few times over the years and it is an event that every motocross racer should do,” Gibbs explained. “It’s an amazing track to ride that offers challenges in its layout, its terrain and its physical demands. The atmosphere at the venue is also nothing like we experience back on the east coast.

“There is always a big crowd on hand that line the entire track and make plenty of noise as they watch the races. They are motocross people who know about the sport and are enthusiastic to cheer on their favourite rider. My shoulder should be good to go and I’m looking forward to heading back to Manjimup and catching up with all the WA fans.”

Clout, who took hold of the MX1 points lead at the weekend, will take to the Cosy Creek circuit that hosted the 1992 Motocross of Nations (MXoN) for the very first time in his career.

“I have heard so many good things about Manjimup and it’s awesome to know I will finally be taking the trip over to contest the event,” Clout commented. “Dacka has told me so many stories about his time racing Manjimup and I hope my time there is half as exciting as his.

“And I’m not sure if I can bare another story about riding a 500cc two stroke on a track rough enough to swallow an ocean-liner. I have seen the track on video and watched some races there and it looks like such a fun track to ride. The schedule looks hectic with six motos during the day but that’s fine with me and I can’t wait to get behind the gate and race Kirk as well as all the WA riders.”

Yamaha Motor Australia’s sales and marketing manager Matt Ferry spoke of the importance of making an increased presence at the Western Australian event: “WA is sometimes over-looked for major motorcycling events but Yamaha Australia want to keep in touch with our WA customer base and having the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team work in conjunction with our local WA race teams and dealers is a great way for us to show case the powerful YZ range.

“Last year, Dean Ferris represented Yamaha at the event and took home the victory while this year, both YMA and CDR Yamaha have stepped it up and we now have both of our factory riders contesting the event and mingling with WA dirt bike fans.”

Western Australian Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing) will return home for the 15,000 fresh after securing dual MX2 overall victories at Murray Bridge, as well as fellow West Aussie and current MXD points leader Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor).

Febvre targeting MXGP of Portugal return

Factory Yamaha contender to sit out this weekend’s MXGP at Mantova.

Image: Supplied.

Former champion Romain Febvre has confirmed he’ll sit out this weekend’s fifth round of the 2019 MXGP World Championship at Mantova in Italy, as he targets a return from injury at the MXGP of Portugal on 19 May.

The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing underwent surgery following Argentina’s season-opener in March, where he severely damaged his ankle in a moto two crash.

The Frenchman has since returned to riding, taking advantage of the recent five-week break in the series, however doesn’t feel up to standard to challenge this weekend’s round.

“It has been good to be back on the bike,” said Febvre. “At the moment my ankle is not perfect but it’s good enough to ride and to put some hours on the bike. It gets better every day, but it needs more mobility, so I am able to put my foot where I want, especially on hard-pack corners, but it has been good to start training.

“Right now, I am trying to catch the time back on the bike and it is cool that I can train with Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2’s Ben Watson, which helps me get back into the rhythm because we can push each other and it’s really good for me. Much better than riding alone. I am hoping to be back for Portugal, but if I’m not ready, I think France.”

The MXGP World Championship is currently led by nine-time world champion Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

Evans emerges with career-best result at Murray Bridge MX Nationals

MX1 rookie experiences breakout weekend at South Australia’s double-header.

Image: Foremost Media.

Yamalube Yamaha Racing rookie Richie Evans emerged with a career-best result in the MX1 category at last weekend’s Pirelli MX Nationals double-header in Murray Bridge, the Queenslander winding up sixth overall on both days of racing.

The first three rounds have proven to be a challenge for the factory Yamaha pilot as he transitions to the premier class, with South Australia’s fourth and fifth rounds marking a timely breakout performance for the number 86.

“The first three rounds have been terrible for me for a bunch of reasons and I just wanted a clear run to see what I was capable of and where I sit,” Evans explained. “I was able to get that this weekend at Murray Bridge and I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I had a goal to finish in the top eight every time I hit the track this weekend and apart from qualifying, I finished every race in seventh or better.

“And the last race was the best I felt all year at the MX Nationals. It feels good to leave here with a result that I can be proud of and it also gives me motivation to keep working harder. The more I race with the riders at the front, the more I learn and the more comfortable I get with the pace.

“Thanks to the team for a huge weekend as my mechanic Jed busted his butt all weekend as well as Mike back in the work shop. I glad I could reward them with some decent results and now I want to keep it rolling through to Coolum.”

Evans has advanced to ninth in the MX1 championship rankings, as the MX Nationals returns to action 23 June at Gympie in Queensland.

Todd thankful to escape race one wheel damage unscathed

MX2 points leader salvages fifth overall at Murray Bridge’s fifth round.

Image: Foremost Media.

MX2 red-plate holder Wilson Todd is thankful to have escaped wheel damage in race one of Sunday’s Pirelli MX Nationals in Murray Bridge without suffering a serious dent to his championship lead.

The DPH Motorsport Husqvarna rider was locked in a duel with Kyle Webster (Penrite CRF Honda Racing) in the opening encounter of round five, leading the outing before writing off a rear wheel, forcing him to relinquish the lead and stop into the mechanics’ area.

After switching out the wheel – which was fitted with an alternate tyre option – Todd put on a charge to salvage 14th, and paired with a stunning race victory in moto two, he was granted fifth overall.

“It was a tough weekend for me,” Todd commented. “I don’t like the Murray Bridge track all that much and I haven’t had the best results here. The first moto on Sunday saw me destroy a rear wheel while leading, and have to pull in for Pynee to swap it over, getting back on track in 18th.

“I managed to stay on the lead lap, put in the fastest lap of the race and finish 14th. Lining up for the last race I was motivated, got the start and led start to finish. It wasn’t an ideal weekend, but I salvaged points in bad races and I head into the break with a 23-point lead and a lot of confidence for the second half of the year.”

Boasting a 23-point lead, Todd will return to action following a lengthy break in the MX Nationals, with the next round scheduled for 23 June at Gympie in Queensland.

Moto2 and Moto3 teams complete testing in Jerez

Moto2 and Moto3 teams complete testing in Jerez

Australia’s Gardner forced to sit out test with concussion.

Image: Supplied.

After a tougher start to the year than expected for KTM riders in the Moto2 class, the Austrian factory were stealing headlines on Tuesday at Jerez in the one day official Moto2 and Moto3 test.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Brad Binder had two different bikes to try, and differing swingarms on the Red Bull KTM Ajo bikes of Binder and teammate Jorge Martin indicated the Austrian factory was trying several different options.

The Red Bull KTM Tech 3 bike of Marco Bezzecchi was also sporting a different swingarm. In addition, at least one new frame was being used by more than one KTM machine, with American Racing KTM having a third bike in the garage that was undercover.

After the test, both Binder and Martin were especially positive about changes they’d tried in the last session; happy with improvements made when riding in hotter temperatures – a key area in which they’d suffered during the Grand Prix.

In terms of new parts, MV Agusta Idealavoro Forward were also out testing a new chassis and swingarm in Jerez as they got more valuable miles under their belts ahead of a crucial stage of the season. With MV Agusta already having scored points twice in their debut season in Moto2™, even bigger progress is now the name of the game.

After his huge crash at the start of the race in Jerez, Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) wasn’t testing due to concussion and it was unfortunate for the Australian, with the SAG team having plenty of small bits and pieces to try – including an anti-chatter device.

Gardner’s teammate Tetsuta Nagashima was out on track though to get through the work load, as well as suffering a crash at Turn 13 – rider ok. Star replacement rider Mattia Pasini was also back on a Kalex-framed bike, with the veteran Italian now lending his talents to Petronas Sprinta Racing as he replaces the injured Khairul Idham Pawi, and Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) was a particularly happy man after the test, solving issues he’d suffered with all weekend.

Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) was back out after a tough home GP through no fault of his own, and he was one who had some things from chassis manufacturer Kalex to try.

Teammate Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) avoided the incident on Sunday but crashed, twice, during the test. Dimas Ekky Pratama (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) bounced back after getting embroiled in the incident off the start on in the race too but crashed once in testing, along with Iker Lecuona (American Racing KTM) and Bezzecchi – riders all ok.

Meanwhile in the Moto3 class, Albert Arenas (Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team) was working on bike settings – more specifically clutch settings – and getting more mileage under his belt after a cycling accident put the Spaniard out of the Argentina and Americas GPs. It didn’t stop him from taking a top five at his home Grand Prix in Jerez, however, before the Championship returns to the venue at which he won last year.

Championship leader Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team) was another out on track and he had some new front forks parts to test, with Arenas also trying them in the final session of the day. The man now just one point behind Canet in the standings, Jerez winner Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse), was another high profile rider and team out on track, back at work and preparing for France. He worked on electronics, the clutch and engine braking.

Reigning Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Champion Can Oncu (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was a key name pushing for more mileage as the youngest ever Grand Prix winner tries to find his feet with the 2019 KTM and struggling with it so far this season. The Turkish rider got plenty track time but did, however, crash twice at turn two – rider okay.

Revised 2020 Honda CRF450R and CRF250R models break cover

Updates made to popular motocross range for year model 2020.

2020 honda motocross bikes

Image: Supplied.

The 2020 edition Honda CRF450R and CRF250R models have broken cover, with the manufacturer confirming a host of refinements for the new year model.

The Honda CRF450R has become known for balance and agility, and as such has always offered its rider – whether amateur enthusiast or pro-racer – total control and the chance to get the very best from their ability. Plus, of course it’s built with the durability and longevity that Honda has long been famed for.

For 2020, the CRF450R gets a new electronics package to make it faster over a lap, yet with even more control. Alongside optimised PGM-FI engine maps and HRC Launch Control, for 20YM the CRF450R gains a new Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) system, with the riding modes to assist every rider, from beginner to pro, to manage rear wheel traction and gain drive.

The CRF450R’s frame and swingarm are unchanged but there are new compression damping settings for the Showa suspension. The rear brake gets a pad material revised for durability, and the battery box is re-sited. New graphics for the radiator shrouds complete the update.

The MX2 class is a relentless close-quarter battle – elbow-to-elbow action where every fraction of a second counts. Honda’s CRF250R has proved itself a worthy weapon for the fight. Competition has led its evolution over time, through increments and steps, into a platform that the amateur MX enthusiast – as well as pro-racer – can extract the utmost out of, every metre of every lap.

2020 honda motocross bikes

Image: Supplied.

The CRF250R moves forward once again for 2020, offering a boost to low to mid-range torque, while its frame and swingarm are new, mirroring that of the 19YM CRF450R.

Riders love the CRF250R’s top-end power hit, and after 19YM’s bottom-end improvement, focus of development for the 20YM machine was torque and power in the low-to-mid range. And Honda’s engineers have achieved just that – plus extra top end power – with extensive work to the combustion chamber.

The second gear ratio is now closer to third to reduce the natural drop in engine rpm when making that crucial upshift – clutch performance has also been improved. Detailed improvements to intake and exhaust efficiency, plus engine mapping all work together to achieve the overall goal of improved drive.

To match the engine upgrade the new CRF250R’s frame and swingarm are identical to the 19YM CRF450R. Both items are grams lighter but – more significantly – have a carefully tuned rigidity balance – combined with new compression damping settings for both front and rear Showa suspension, the result is improved stability, feel and accuracy while tracking through fast, bumpy turns.

Pricing and availability in Australia is still to be confirmed. For more information, visit www.motorcycles.honda.com.au.

Tanti relieved with Murray Bridge podium while battling finger injury

Serco Yamaha pilot third overall 10 days after surgery.

Image: Foremost media.

Serco Yamaha’s Aaron Tanti has expressed a sense of relief by earning a podium in Sunday’s edition of Murray Bridge’s Pirelli MX Nationals double-header, undergoing surgery on a finger injury just 10 days prior to the event.

The now Queensland-based talent endured a difficult round four on Saturday, however returned to the South Australian circuit on Sunday in strong form, lodging a consistent 4-4 scorecard for third overall.

“Two weeks I ago while riding I had a crash, and the clutch lever jammed up against my finger and the bars,” Tanti explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “I lacerated my finger pretty badly, and lacerated 70 percent of my tendons in there, so I had to get it operated on to clean it out and see if they could repair them, and they couldn’t because they were pretty damaged.

“I only got operated on 10 days ago, so I’ve been riding in a splint. It was tough riding with it, and having stitches in my finger was always in the back of my mind. I’m pretty happy with the outcome anyway.”

It’s understood Tanti will have to remain in a splint for eight weeks, which will bring him to the next round of the MX Nationals, scheduled for 23 June at Gympie in Queensland.
