Kelso wraps up CEV Repsol season with a win from 30th

Joel Kelso wins from 30th on grid at Circuit Ricardo Tormo

Joel Kelso experienced the highs and lows of racing over the weekend at the CEV Repsol at Circuit Ricardo Tormo.  Kelso qualified a disappointing 30th place due to technical dramas but once the problem was identified and rectified, the Darwin based teenager was on fire.

Joel came from the back of the grid through to a rewarding victory in the opening race of the weekend before backing that up with a sixth place in the final bout of the season.

Conversely, compatriot Harrison Voight qualified well in seventh place before bagging in P20 and P17 across the two races.

Senna Agius also had a consistent weekend, finishing 14th in Race 1, and 16th in Race 2. He was 34th for the season with three points to his name, having added two in Valencia.

Jacob Roulstone

In the ETC, Jacob Roulstone had a great weekend, finishing second in Race 1 and third in Race 2, to claim 36-points to his tally, catapulting him up the standings to ninth.

The Spaniards meanwhile wrapped up the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship and Hawkers European Talent Cup titles on a thrilling final race day of the year

In front of 10,000 fans at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Daniel Holgado (Aspar Team) and Maximo Martinez (Team Honda Laglisse) were crowned 2021 Champions on a phenomenal Sunday finale, as the duo wrapped up the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship and Hawkers European Talent Cup titles respectively.

The Spaniards join Fermin Aldeguer (Boscoscuro Team Ciatti) in becoming the 2021 FIM CEV Repsol Champions across the Moto3, Moto2 European Championship and Hawkers European Talent Cup classes.

In the FIM Moto3 JWCh, Holgado took the title in Race 1 after finishing ninth, with closest rival David Muñoz (Avatel – Cardoso Racing) unable to make a comeback from a pitlane start.

Daniel Holgado

With Muñoz 19th and Ivan Ortola (Team MTA) third, Holgado was crowned Champion on Sunday morning in a race that saw Joel Kelso (AGR Team) take a sensational win from the back row of the grid.

David Alonso (Aspar Team) joined Kelso and Ortola on the Race 1 podium.

Joel Kelso topped the Race 1 podium in Moto3

In Race 2, the shackles were off. Holgado grabbed the holeshot and was in the lead group throughout, with the race ultimately coming down to the final lap.

Ortola led out the final corner, but Holgado snatched victory to end his title-winning campaign on top, with Ortola and David Salvador (TM Factory Racing) completing the rostrum.

Dani Holgado – 2021 Champion

“I want to thank everyone who came to see me today, because I felt the support and strength that I lacked in the last laps. Also to all my team, they are amazing and I will miss them a lot. I hope we meet again in the future. I also want to congratulate David Muñoz and Iván Ortolá, because they have done a great championship and have been great rivals. Thanks to them I have been able to improve as a driver and also as a person, working hard day after day. Congratulations to them too. In the second race, I was able to go out more aggressive and ready to fight for the victory and finally we were able to take another win.”

Daniel Holgado

Harrison Voight

“Season finished. Race1: P20, Race2: P17. Happy to finish this season on a good note, these results don’t look fantastic after qualifying 7th but all I can say is that I gave it everything I had… After missing most of the races this year has really shown how strong the field is. A big THANK YOU to these people for helping me keep moving forward in difficult moments. My family, Paolo Simoncelli, Jack Miller…. Time to head home, reset & prepare for next season.”

Senna Agius

“I’m happy with how I rode this weekend here in Valencia. I made a good step with riding style in wet conditions and also my grid spot in qualifying. The races were a little bit tough but a step in the right direction. I need to thank SIC 58 Squadra Corse for these past two years and I’m grateful for the opportunity the team and my family have given me. There has been quite a few people behind the scenes that have taught me so much for the future. Special thanks to Leon Camier and Steph Redman.”

European Talent Cup

Race 1 in the HETC saw Martinez show no signs of Championship leading pressure. The Spaniard fended off Jacob Roulstone (Leopard Impala Junior) to win, putting him 20 points clear of Xabi Zurutuza and fellow Cuna de Campeones rider Adrian Cruces heading into the final showdown.

HETC – Brian Uriarte

Despite a nervy race – which saw Martinez tackle a Long Lap Penalty and a drop one position penalty for exceeding track limits on the last lap – Martinez’ sixth place handed him the 2021 title, with Zurutuza and Cruces colliding and running into the gravel at Turn 12 on the last lap.

Alvaro Carpe (MT-Foundation 77), after a crash in Race 1, notched up his second win of the season in Race 2, as Brian Uriarte (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) and Roulstone made up the last podium of 2021.

Moto2 ECh

There was only one race for the Moto2 ECh riders to contend with, and Alonzo Lopez (Boscoscuro Team Ciatti) won for the second time this season in a red-flagged encounter.

Moto2 – Alonzo Lopez

The race was stopped five laps from the end after Leon Orgis’ (Avintia Esponsorama Junior) machine spilt oil on the start/finish straight.

This handed race leader Lopez victory over second place Aldeguer, with Lukas Tulovic (Liqui Moly Intact SIC Racing) picking up P3 as the top three in the overall standings celebrate the final podium of the season together.

Joel Kelso tops CEV Repsol Moto3 at Misano

2021 FIM CEV Repsol – Round 7
Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli

Australia’s Joel Kelso (AGR Team) has taken his second victory of the 2021 FIM Junior Moto3 World Championship at Misano over the weekend, after a thrilling race saw close racing between Kelso, Ivan Ortola, and Dani Holgado who crashed out on the final lap.

Kelso had just announced he’d landed a contract for 2022 with CIP Greenpower in the Moto3 World Championship, having previously run as a wildcard with the team at Sachsenring and Assen.

He also set a new lap record, as well as the fastest ever lap set in practice at Misano, making for a truly memorable weekend.

The Australian pulling off an audacious move in the final sector to beat Ivan Ortola (Team MTA) and David Muñoz (Avatel Cardoso Racing), Championship leader Holgado saw his lead shrink as a result of his crash.

Fellow Aussie Senna Agius qualified in 16th for the weekend, and battled to a 23rd place finish 26-seconds off leading pace.

Muñoz fired away from pole position but drifted across to his right before then colliding with Kelso on the run down to Turn 1. The Australian, unbothered by the contact, took the holeshot and quickly put his head down. The number 66’s pace was too hot for many to handle, with only Ortola, Muñoz and Holgado able to go with him.

Further back, Aspar Junior Team’s Scott Ogden was left frustrated after his race ended prematurely following a collision with Avatel Cardoso Racing’s Dani Muñoz. At the front though, it was a leading group of four. As they flicked left for Turn 15 on Lap 4, the rear of Holgado’s GASGAS machine let go and the young Spaniard made his first error of 2021 as he crashed out of the victory fight.

We were left with three at the front and Kelso was quite happy to lead the way. Both Ortola and Muñoz sat and studied the 18-year-old until with three laps to go the fight for victory sparked into life. Muñoz pounced on Ortola at Turn 1 before then being handed the lead as Kelso ran wide at Turn 4.

Ortola, not happy to sit in second behind his compatriot, was able to find an instant response and dived through on the brakes into Turn 8. It would go from bad to worse for Muñoz as Kelso sprung a surprise move at Turn 15 to move up to second. Two laps now left and Kelso was back at the front thanks to brave move at the fast Turn 12.

Kelso started the final lap at the front and for the first half a lap was inch-perfect, until he made a costly error at Turn 10. The Australian went wide and Ortola pounced. The Spaniard was half a lap away from a debut victory and went defensive as a result. However, Kelso was able to magic something up at Turn 12 as he rolled around the outside of Ortola to hit the front and eventually take victory.

Ortola remains in the title fight, now 43 points adrift, after a fifth podium of the year, whilst Muñoz, who eased off on the final lap, now sits 26 behind Holgado thanks to a fourth straight podium. Three men, two races, one title all to be decided at Valencia in two months’ time.

AC Racing Team’s Collin Veijer put in one of the rides of the day to take fourth having started 23rd. Josito Garcia (SIC58 Squadra Corse) clinched fifth, a fraction clear of Luca Lunetta (AC Racing Team) and Zonta Van Den Goorbergh (Team Super B) who both enjoyed career-best finishes in sixth and seventh.

Astra Honda Racing Team’s Mario Aji was only half a second behind Veijer in eighth, before the top ten was rounded out by David Salvador (TM Racing Factory Team) and Josh Whatley (Team MTA).

Muñoz, Aldeguer and Cruces top tragic CEV Aragon

2021 FIM CEV Repsol – Round 5 Aragon

Muñoz, Aldeguer and Cruces took victory on a sad day for the sport at Aragon, following the passing of Hugo Millán after a multi-rider incident saw him attended on track before being transferred to the Medical Centre at the Circuit, eventually succumbing to his injuries.

FIM Moto3 JWC

Round 5 of FIM CEV Repsol saw Avatel – Cardoso Racing’s David Muñoz clinch a career-first victory in the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship, beating poleman Jose Rueda (Team Estrella Galicia 0,0) by 0.019 of a second. Championship leader Daniel Holgado (Aspar Junior Team) claimed the final podium place and is now 60 points clear of Muñoz in second.

FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship Start

Australia’s Joel Kelso was eighth, 0.979s off leading pace, with Senna Agius finishing 18th. Kelso now holds the same position in the overall standings, with Senna Agius holding a championship point to his name.

Joel Kelso

“Crazy race, P8 in the end from P15 with a long lap but was a hard fight to catch the front after the penalty. Anyways results don’t matter today my thoughts are with the family and friends of Hugo Millán that sadly passed away RIP.”

Senna Agius

“It doesn’t sound the best on paper but I’m very happy with the progress made with in myself this weekend. Now we can take this on board for the future. Anyways this all doesn’t matter at all. Today was another horrific day for motorsport. We lost a young little up and coming superstar Hugo Millan in a tragic accident in the ETC race an hour before the Moto3 race. I send all my love and strength to Hugo’s Family and loved ones. This Sport gives us all so much but can also take away everything in a heart beat. You will be missed Hugo.”
