2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Round Two – Wakefield Park
Motorsport TV Supersport Race Two
Defending champ Tom Toparis won the opening Superspot bout despite determined early charges from Max Stauffer and Broc Pearson while a fast-starting Tommy Edwards was also in the mix early on.Oli Bayliss took a while to fire in the opening bout and lost the series lead to Toparis this morning, the local favourite now leading the series on 91-points from Bayliss on 88-points.
Max Stauffer had moved up equal third in the standings with Tom Edwards and both of those riders showed some brilliant early pace before fading later on. They would have been searching for more tyre durability from their set-ups in their preparations for the second and final Supersport bout of the day.
Broc Pearson had a few clutch bites off the line which cost him at the start, no such problems for Toparis though and Oli Bayliss was off to a much better start this time around and immediately started challenging Toparis for the lead.Broc Pearson was up to third, Max Stauffer fourth and Tom Edwards fifth.
Birthday boy Broc Pearson was quickest on lap two and closed right on to the tail of Bayliss and Toparis. Stauffer and Edwards had not lost touch and had their heads down to try and stay with that leading trio.
Pearson made a huge move on Bayliss under brakes late on lap three and took second placed momentarily from Bayliss but ran a little wide which allowed Oli back through. That did allow Toparis some breathing space though as the tussle behind him played out.Pearson got Bayliss on the next lap, then to add further insult Max Stauffer slipped past and pushed Bayliss back to fourth place.
Max Stauffer then started to look for a way past Pearson but the Queenslander responded and managed to stretch a few bike lengths away from Stauffer.
Pearson then reeled in Toparis over the next couple of laps and with six laps to run was under half-a-second behind the championship leader.Over the course of the next few laps though Pearson was overhauled by Stauffer and pushed back to third place.
Stauffer then closed in on Toparis and then made a huge move at the final turn to try and take the win but had to stand it up and pull out of it, that allowed Pearson to sweep back through for second place while Max recovered to take the final step on the rostrum.
Oli Bayliss a few seconds further behind in fourth place with Tom Edwards came home fifth.
There may have only been ten starters in that Supersport race but there was still plenty of action to keep us entertained.
Toparis extends his championship lead over Bayliss to 11-points, 116 plays 105.Max Stauffer in third with 83-points, Edwards next on 81-points then Pearson in fifth on 77-points.

Defending champ Tom Toparis scored the holeshot and led birthday boy Broc Pearson around the first complex of right-handers with Tommy Edwards right on their tail. Edwards and Stauffer then both squeezed past Pearson to relegate him to fourth place just ahead of Oli Bayliss.
Tom Toparis set a new race lap record of 59.346 on lap two to stretch away from his pursuers. Max Stauffer then moved past Edwards for second place and lowered the lap record further to 59.205, pulling a few-tenths back on Toparis. Pearson worked his way past Edwards to move back up to third place while Oli Bayliss was only now getting down to business and looking for a way past Edwards.
Broc Pearson then lowered the lap record to 51.156 as both himself and Stauffer continued to inch their way forward towards Toparis. All three of them were under the previous race lap record on that fourth lap.
Max Stauffer then lowered the race lap record again, a 59.050 equalling the qualifying lap record set by Cru Halliday here two years ago. The gap between Stauffer and Toparis was down to half-a-second as the race broached the half-way mark.
Toparis though proved to have the late race pace and could continue to reel off 59.2s while Stauffer and Pearson started to drift back towards 59.4s and 59.5s, still under the previous lap record but not good enough to run with Toparis.
With three laps to run the local lad had extended his buffer out to 1.3-seconds as Broc Pearson moved up to second place and Stauffer started to struggle to maintain his early pace. Oli Bayliss was six-seconds further back in fourth place with a few bike lengths over Tom Edwards.
At the last lap board Toparis had 1.5-seconds over Pearson, who in turn had a full-second over Stauffer.
Toparis then backed it off on the final lap but still took victory by 1.6-seconds over Pearson while Max Stauffer rounded out the podium.
Oli Bayliss took fourth place and thus loses the championship lead to Toparis, who now leads the series on 91-points from Bayliss on 88-points. Max Stauffer moved up equal third in the standings with Tom Edwards.
Race two is scheduled to take place at 1310 this afternoon.
2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park
Kawasaki Superbike
The track temperature at Wakefield Park had just surpassed 50-degrees when Superbike competitors hit the track for qualifying this afternoon in what is round two of the 2020 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship.
Some controversy had unfolded earlier in the day when Glenn Allerton was disqualified from the Timed Practice results for a machine eligibility issue. That forced the three-time champ to contest Q1 before progressing through to Q2. The issue was related to a swingarm dampening device that was ruled illegal by M.A. stewards, but not before a serious argument from NextGen BMW’s Shane Kinderis.
Wayne Maxwell put in a 57.355 with five-minutes remaining in the session, then immediately backed it up with a 57.358 and then a 57.438. Some consistency…
Troy Herfoss then pulled his finger out and dropped in a 57.421. He then slowed for a lap before putting his head down again to be on course for pole before losing a heap of time in the last sector, presumably pulling out of the lap.
The Penrite Honda man then went for it again, under at the second split, and then took pole as the chequered flag came out, crossing the stripe at 57.331 to deny Wayne Maxwell that crucial point for pole position.
Cru Halliday joins them on the front row while Glenn Allerton heads the second row alongside Mike Jones and Bryan Staring.
Aiden Wagner heads the third row beside Josh Waters and Glenn Scott while Jed Metcher rounded out the top ten, despite crashing for the second time this weekend.
Cru Halliday’s 57.138 qualifying lap record of 2019 was not broken today.
Race one gets underway on Saturday at 1105 while race two is scheduled for 1415. The weather forecast looks potentially daunting with a 70 per cent chance of 20-40 mm of rain tomorrow, and that rain is scheduled to start around 1400. Could make things interesting….
There are 101 points still up for grabs this weekend and any mistakes will be costly but come Sunday afternoon we will crown the 2020 Australian Superbike Champion.

Motorsports TV Supersport
Despite putting in more than a dozen laps in the second and final Supersport qualifying session Tom Toparis didn’t manage to better his morning marker of 59.071.
However, that time remained good enough for the local young star to claim pole position and the important point that comes with it.
Broc Pearson will start from second on the grid while series leader Oli Bayliss will round out the front row.
That pole position trims Bayliss’ points lead down to five but with 101 points up for grabs in this double-header finale it’s anyone’s game.
Not that it is only that trio in with a chance…? Max Stauffer and Tom Edwards both look very fast and then we have the likes of Aidan Hayes, Jack Hyde, Joel Taylor and Jack Passfield that are all capable of springing a surprise. Like we said earlier, despite the relative lack of entries, a slim 12 riders, the Supersport category is really wide open…

YMI Supersport 300
Carter Thompson started from pole position alongside Ben Baker and Harry Khouri and it was the same trio on the podium after the opening bout for the YMI Supersport category today at Wakefield Park.
The first attempt at running the race ended prematurely after Joseph Marinello hit a false neutral at the fish hook and ended up t-boning Zak Pettendy. The latter of those two copped quite a whack and was taken to the medical centra for treatment.
The re-started race was shortened from ten to eight laps and Carter Thompson took a clear victory ahead of Khouri and Baker.
John Lytras fourth ahead of Archie McDonald but it was sixth placed Luke Power that set the fastest lap of the race.

2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park
We woke up to an absolutely glorious morning here in Goulburn. Beautiful blue skies shining down the delightfully quaint main street of Australia’s first inland city, lighting up some of the beautiful old buildings and setting the scene for what was expected to be a clear and sunny day.
Arriving at the circuit this morning the sun’s glare had nothing on the pumps worn by BCperformance Kawasaki’s Bryan Staring which were greener than a very green thing! They were that bright when viewed in the sun that they must have been giving his ankles a suntan!
YMI Supersport 300 competitors were first to hit the track this morning followed by 600 Supersport. Harry Khouri took provisional pole this morning ahead of Carter Thompson, Luke Power and Brandon Demmery. They will do battle again at 1140 in the final qualifying session before the lights go out for their opening 10-lap race of the weekend at 1345 this afternoon.
Local favourite Tom Toparis obviously got out the right side of bed as he was immediately knocking on the door of Cru Halliday’s Supersport lap record, a 59.071s for Toparis compared to Halliday’s 59.050s qualifying record set in 2018. The Motorsports TV sponsored Supersport category will be on track again at 1255 for a 25-minute final qualifying session then they will be done for the day.
Superbike competitors hit the track for their Timed Practice session around 1030 this morning. Under a qualifying format for Superbike introduced last season, the morning 35-minute ‘Timed Practice’ session decides which nine riders automatically qualify for the Q2 session. The riders from tenth back in the Timed Practice session having to fight it out in a Q1 session, scheduled for 1410 this afternoon, with the top three in that session then being promoted into Q2, making for a final 12-rider tussle over the first four rows of the grid that is set to take place at 1450.
With the long COVID induced lay-off though this session was also counting as vital set-up time. Yesterday many rider were still tweaking the ergonomics of the machine and controls to their liking, such has been the lack of testing and competition for most this year.
It was a slightly unremarkable session this morning. Few of the top riders went faster than they did yesterday during Free Practice (Link).
Troy Herfoss topped the session with a 57.409 to gain his direct graduation to Q2.
Wayne Maxwell also goes through along with Cru Halliday, Mike Jones, Aiden Wagner, Glenn Allerton, Bryan Staring, Josh Waters and Jed Metcher. A fairly predictable top nine.

2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park Schedule
Something tells us that we could be on course for yet another showdown for a championship between Wayne Maxwell and his nemesis, but friend, Troy Herfoss… Cru Halliday though could insert himself between them and break through for his first Superbike championship. But in reality, anything could happen, and probably will!
2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park
ASBK competitors awoke to a foggy and damp backdrop cloaking Wakefield Park this morning as they prepared to shake off the shackles of COVID hibernation and prepare for what is a busy four-day schedule at this double-header ASBK finale.
The gloomy morning soon dried and while conditions remained overcast the track was dry and in pretty good condition. Tomorrow is expected to be similar, with a cool morning giving way to a warm and sunny day.
Things look likely to change come Saturday, when a full round two schedule of racing will be run. The current forecast predicts a 70 per cent chance of 10-20 mm of rain on Saturday which will turn Wakefield Park sultry as the temperature is still expected to nudge 30-degrees.
Sunday is expected to be fine but much cooler as competitors run through another full day race schedule which will also be the final round of this interrupted season.Nothing like mixing it up to keep competitors on their toes and those changing conditions might bring some surprises…
Cru Halliday holds both the Superbike and Supersport qualifying lap records here at Wakefield. He set the Superbike benchmark last year at 57.138s and the Supersport record the year before at 59.050s. Less than two-seconds between an R1 and an R6 illustrates just how technical this track is, and how much outright power is not all that important. That is of course unless you want to pass someone else in the heat of battle then hold them up on entry into the next turn…
Cru Halliday topped FP1 while Wayne Maxwell topped a warmer FP2 where track temperatures passed 40 degrees. Track temps nudged 50-degrees as FP3 got underway just after 1600 this afternoon.
Wayne Maxwell improved his marker to 57.369 on his 14th lap of the final session. Herfoss cut a tenth off his previous best with six-minutes remaining in the session, but that 57.406 was not good enough to knock Maxwell out of top spot. Cru Halliday then improved his best to 57.382.
Herfoss then went top with a 57.328 before immediately backing it up with a 57.366 and a 57.735.
Maxwell was on another good lap but the red flag then came out as Chandler Cooper went down at turn two, his bike hitting the fence.
Only a couple of minutes were remaining in the session so officials declared the session and thus Herfoss ends day one on top. An impressive show of pace considering he had not ridden the completely new Fireblade around this circuit before.
Things are tight at the top though with less than six-hundredths of a second covering the top three.
Maxwell, Herfoss, Halliday, Allerton, Wagner and Jones are all in the 57s.
So plenty of riders have great one-lap speed, but who can go the 18-lap race distance?
Maxwell is running Pirelli rubber, as is FP1 pace-setter Cru Halliday.Troy Herfoss is a Michelin man while Dunlop have the likes of Bryan Staring and Josh Waters on their hoops.
That is an answer we won’t have until Saturday afternoon. It will be very interesting to see how that tyre war unfolds this weekend, especially as we might also get a dump of rain on Saturday, followed by cool but dry conditions on Sunday.
Before that though we have qualifying on Friday, where an important single point for pole position will be up for grabs. Superbike competitors have a possible maximum points earn of 102 from the weekend if they were to take both pole positions and all four race wins.
One competitor though that will take no points this weekend is Evan Byles. The SA Motorcycle Dealer Principal crashed today and damaged his shoulder which ruled him out of the remainder of the event.
Max Stauffer topped the opening two Supersport sessions but was pipped in the final 30-minute bout by Broc Pearson, Stauffer going down a turn six after going fastest through the first split, thus Thursday honours belong to Pearson. Tom Toparis was third quickest today ahead of Oli Bayliss and Tom Edwards.Aiden Hayes and Jack Hyde are not far behind.
The Supersport Championship is completely wide open with 102-points up for grabs this weekend.
Riders will be back on track tomorrow with qualifying for all classes and a few races at the end of the day for the support classes.
Tune in on Saturday and Sunday to watch it all unfold or follow our coverage right here on MCNews.com.au in what will be our 21st year covering the Australian Superbike Championship. And in all that time, Trev has only missed one round this century!
Who will be crowned king come Sunday afternoon…..?

2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park Schedule
2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park
Well MotoGP has been done and dusted, Australia is getting on top of the plague and Queensland are thinking about rejoining the rest of Australia so its time to go racing!
The venue for this coitus interruptus of an ASBK season to reconvene in earnest is Wakefield Park. Goulburn got the guernsey thanks due to it being in regional NSW, thus nearly everyone was allowed to travel there. Even Queenslanders could turn up while still being allowed to return home some time this decade, if they ask nicely… Western Australians though, are still not allowed out…
Wakefield is also relatively central and the hosts could massage their slate of bookings generously enough to accommodate us. Winning.
Sadly though ASBK Race Fans will be unable to attend the event in person due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, fans can catch all the action live via ASBK TV partners SBSHD, Fox Sports Australia and Fox Sports Asia on both Saturday and Sunday.
It is a busy four day schedule for this double-header round with practice Thursday, Qualifying for all classes on Friday along with a race for the YMI Supersport 300, bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup and YMF R3 Cup categories.Saturday then sees a full round two race schedule while on Sunday we, somewhat surprisingly, have another round of qualifying immediately prior to the round three race schedule. The full time-line can be seen further down the page, along with the TV schedule.
Superbike competitors have a possible maximum points earn of 102 from the weekend if they were to take both pole positions and all four race wins.
One small mistake might be all it takes to lose your chance at the chalice, and with a 50 per cent chain of 10-20 mm of rain on Saturday, it could be a fine line to tread between hero and zero… Conditions are expected to be fine on Sunday but forecast strong winds could cause problems and if that rain does not eventuate, potentially dust storms.
Wayne Maxwell dominated the season opener back in February at Phillip Island with a perfect haul of 76 points. It was not quite that clear cut or easy for Maxwell as the score-board looks though, Cru Halliday was nipping at his heels throughout the weekend and piled the pressure on.
Maxwell’s race records at Wakefield could be an ominous sign for his Championship rivals. Maxwell took race wins in 2018, 2017 and 2016 and has been a top three points scorer for the last four years at the NSW circuit. This year though he is on an all-new machine after switching to a Ducati V4 R, and he may be a little behind the eight-ball when it comes to set-up when proceedings get underway on Thursday.
Wayne Maxwell
“Wakefield has been good to me, I’ve won races there, I’ve finished on the podium and I enjoy Wakefield, the layout, the challenges it presents, and I can’t wait to get out there and take it on.
“It’s been a difficult year for everyone involved in ASBK, it’s been unprecedented. There has been a lot of hard work done in such a funny year. So many times you build yourself up to go racing and then we get shut down by things that are outside of ASBK’s control.
“For the Boost Mobile-K-Tech team, everyone has stood by us and been committed, hopefully we can bring the ultimate reward on the Sunday. It would mean the world to me and a great reward for my guys.”
In recent weeks Maxwell has managed to get some seat time on his Ducati at Winton Motor Raceway in preparation for the Grand Finale.
“Track time is definitely what I’ve needed. Being back on the Boost Mobile K-Tech bike and training on the Ohvale has put me in a really good position to take on the gruelling ASBK double header. To win It will take no mistakes, that’s the key for us to win the Championship. I’m confident, I have no reason not to be.”
Cru Halliday
Halliday was buoyed with confidence after his 2-2-2 results at Phillip Island and was oh so close to forcing Maxwell into a mistake. The 32-year-old is now only 16-points behind Championship leader Wayne Maxwell, and 11-points ahead of third placed Josh Waters.
“I’m ready. I’m feeling really good, my fitness is there and I’m confident going into Wakefield Park,” Halliday said after completing a test session on his firing Yamaha R1. “I’ve got the bike to where I really want it to be, I feel comfortable and we only have to make small adjustments when we get to a track.
“I think with the ASBK Championship on the line, everyone is going to be all out to win. With the competition this year, it is so fierce, and you have to go into it mentally prepared and that you are going to get the job done. It’s going to be pretty brutal. We have two 20 lap races on Saturday and Sunday, so we have to be physically and mentally fit, and I’m ready.”
Halliday’s recent record at Wakefield Park Raceway is strong. He scored two 2nd places in 2019 in the Superbike class and two victories in 2018 in the MotorsportsTV Supersport class, in which he went on to win the Championship.
“Everyone knows it’s Troy Herfoss’ backyard, and he and Wayne Maxwell are going to be the ones to beat. You can’t count out guys like Josh Waters, Bryan Staring, my team-mate Aiden Wagner who had a tough year earlier on with injury. But he’s back and on the ball firing. You can’t exclude people like Mike Jones, he has the number one plate for a reason, and there are guys outside the top ten who could cause an upset if everything goes belly up.
“I’ve had some good luck at Wakefield. When I saw Wakefield come up, I thought it’s a track that’s going to be good for me, so I can’t wait. I like the top section of the track, turns 4 and 5, Wakefield is technical and off camber, but I happen to go well at there. It just gels with me.”
After somewhat hastily cobbling together a self-run team at almost the last minute even Josh Waters himself was somewhat surprised, but delighted, at the 3-4-3 results he carded at round one. Waters has three Australian Superbike Championship Titles under his belt and is looking to become the first rider to capture four.
Josh Waters
“Being in the position we are in, doing it all ourselves and working on my own bike, it would be very special for everyone involved to win a fourth ASBK Championship. It will take four good results, and maybe a little bit of bad luck for others, not that I want that for them. All I can do is concentrate on what I can do on track.
“We’ve all been off the bike for a long time, and with the double header I’m going to try and play it smart. If you look at other Championships that have had breaks there has been a lot of stuff go on track, so I think ASBK could be the same.
“This is physical little circuit, and it will be the same for everyone so there is no point whinging. I will just worry about myself and get the best out of the small team and package we have.
“It’s been a tough year with COVID-19 but I’ve got some good people in my team. My brother is running the ship and he has been with me ever since I came back from Europe and a number of small businesses supporting me as well.”
Bryan Staring also figured strongly at the season opener, bagging 49-points, one more than amassed by Troy Herfoss.Previously an Australian 125 GP, Supersport and Superbike Champion, the Western Australian could well add another if Dunlop bring a secret weapon to Wakefield that might give him an edge.
Bryan Staring
“Obviously, the goal is always to win the Championship, that is the dream goal and objective. You can only expect to put your best performance in each time and where that puts us on the circuit we will see.
“I would anticipate there is going to be some mixed results and crazy racing from riders that haven’t been riding or competing as often as normal. Add to this the heightened pressure of what is a now shortened Championship and anything could happen.
“I’ve got a great bike and Dunlop tyres under me and I have every reason to be confident. I am certainly looking forward to getting back to racing again. Just to get the normality of life back in check and in tune.
“Kawasaki BCPerformance is certainly a place I feel at home and appreciated, and I can do my best work here. The package they have for us with the Dunlop tyre is a good one, and everyone puts their best foot forward.”
“We did a test earlier in the season pre-COVID and it was the most positive outcome we’ve had at Wakefield Park. Previous results we haven’t achieved what we’ve set out to do at that circuit, but I won’t let that affect me mentally or the target and objective for this weekend. I’m certainly looking forward to turn our fortunes around at Wakefield Park and we want to make it one of our circuits.
“I feel like everyone in the team is super motivated with a never give up attitude and that is what I enjoy, I couldn’t be happier.”
Troy Herfoss and the Penrite Honda squad have been putting in the hard yards readying the all-new CBR1000RR-R SP for the heat of ASBK competition and Herf’ is hot to trot on the turf that he has celebrated so much success over the years.
Normally more than half the crowd would be cheering him on as the home town favourite, but with restrictions leaving fans to watch on the TV from their lounge rooms it will be a very different atmosphere this year for Troy.
We suspect that Herf’ has been playing his cards a little close to his chest in the lead-up to the finale but he will come out swinging when the lights go out. A full interview with Troy will be published tomorrow on ASBK.com.au.
Troy Herfoss
“We are going to a track I enjoy, but also going there with a new bike I’ve never turned a lap on there. The bike 100 is per cent different, there is no part on that bike that is the same as the old one, so we are rolling out Thursday morning blind. But to be honest it hasn’t event crossed my mind that we won’t be competitive. It’s physically really hard and impossible to ride a Superbike around Wakefield at 100 per cent all the time, so you’ve got be fit.
“I just want to go there and do my best and win the Championship, and if I do it, it will be my third official Australian Superbike Championship and fourth time I’ve won an ASBK Championship.”
One top rider missing from the grid this weekend is YRT rider Daniel Falzon. The South Aussie has been a mainstay of the series for a long time and it will be strange for him not to be there. Matt Walters is another regular not attending this weekend.
Daniel Falzon
“To be honest, I have been a firm believer from earlier this year when the first few rounds were “postponed” that the championship should have been cancelled all together. Obviously working in the healthcare industry (Daniel is a Paramedic), I have been in the thick of Covid-19 and the rescheduling of each event made planning extremely difficult for us.
“I suppose the nail in the coffin for us was the recent SA outbreak and the cancellation of The Bend. The risk and reward of competing at Wakefield park was considered amongst our team and partners, and we have decided to not enter the round.
“We will look forward to redirecting our budget 2021.”
While Daniel Falzon will be staying home fellow South Aussie Arthur Sissis has entered the round. The ex-speedway star is the master of the hole-shot, something that is crucial heading into Wakefield Park’s tricky complex of right-handers.
Defending Champ Mike Jones had a disappointing opening to his title defence when a bike problem saw him unable to start the opening race. The DesmoSport Ducati rider though bounced back in the following two bouts to bag 35-points and is still right in the game.
Mike Jones
“I love racing, so I’m pretty excited to get on track again. It’s been a tough year for so many people here and around the world, so I really am grateful we get the opportunity to race at all. I’ve been able to keep training in the break, getting plenty of time in on the mountain bike especially, but also a few of the local races on the V4R here in Queensland and I feel ready. Obviously, with a double header format, we have a lot more time on track compared to a usual ASBK round and it will be a lot more psychically demanding, but my program is strong.”
Jed Metcher put in some solid rides at the Phillip Island opener and is capable of springing some surprises this weekend.
Jed Metcher
“I guess the run down on my end is that we have gone to 2020 R1’s with so great success so far for myself getting into the 55’s at Broadford and 21’s at Winton in our first outing. We will be using this race meeting as a bit of a test as on the new bikes so no pressure this round.”
Glenn Allerton, yet another three-time champion in the field (along with Waters), is champing at the bit to get out there after getting the latest S 1000 RR set-up to his liking. He might be 45-points behind and thus somewhat of a dark horse, but he is relishing his underdog status and reckons he can be fighting up front this weekend.
Glenn Allerton
“I’ve had a good re-set during this down time. Testing and sorting out the new BMW S 1000 RR. Shane (crew chief) and myself have made be steps forward with the setup of our bike and it has improved massively since round one where we showed great speed in qualifying but the race set-up needed work.
“I’ve never been more confident with my bike and I can’t wait to get out on track at Wakefield, a track that has been a really successful place for me over the years. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain this weekend so I’ll be going all out for race wins.”
Aiden Wagner had a difficult start to the year but is certain to be battling for podiums. If the cards fall his way, he is also a chance for the title.
Aiden Wagner
“Great to finally be going back racing with the team and ASBK paddock after the rough year everyone has had. It will be awesome to feel a bit of normality again. Going to be tough for me to get on the podium in the current championship standings but aiming so get up on the podium of the race days for sure. Been training a lot leading up to this round so I’m feeling super fit and can’t wait to turn the tyres on the Factory R1 and get racing!”
The likes of Linden Magee, Beau Beaton, Mark Chiodo and Glenn Scott could also surprise the regular front runners. International journeymen Lachlan Epis and Chandler Cooper will also be interesting to watch as they go up against the top crop of Australian Superbike regulars.
It is all on the line this weekend and in this strange plague affected season there are a dozen riders in with a red hot shot at glory this weekend.

ASBK Supersport
In Supersport Oli Bayliss goes into the finale six-points clear of Tom Toparis, the defending champion on home turf but Bayliss has been working hard in the down-time and will be on a quest to lift his first Supersport title.
Any trip up by either of those young men though will be punished harshly with the likes of Nic Liminton, Tom Edwards, Max Stauffer and Jack Hyde all less than a win away from the series lead.
Oli Bayliss
“It’s been a tough year to keep motivated without being able to race as much as we planned, but luckily for me, I’m surrounded by people that keep me on track. Ben at the workshop, my brother Mitch at the gym as well as Dad at home has meant my fitness levels are better than ever and I’m just as motivated to win this weekend as I was at Phillip Island in February. It’s going to be a big weekend on track, but I’m ready to get to work“.

YMI Supersport 300
The YMI Supersport 300 Championship title is there for the taking for riders brave enough to put everything on the line for victory.
Just in the last few years we have seen the likes of Billy Van Eerde,Joel Kelso, Senna Agius, Jacob Roulstone, Harrison Voight, Max Gibbons and Carter Thompson, competing in major international championships such as the Red Bull Rookies Cup, FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Championship, FIM European Talent Cup, and Asia Talent Cup.
With 45 points separating the top 10 riders and 127 points on offer over 5 gruelling races for rounds 2 and 3 – the Championship decider – picking a winner is near impossible. Competition in the Supersport 300 class is fierce as we saw at round 1 with 40 riders dicing, rubbing elbows and fairings for the win in front of the WorldSBK paddock. Harry Khouri though holds a significant 27-point advantage over Archie McDonald heading into the finale.

2020 Australian R3 Cup Rounds 2-3 – Wakefield Park Schedule
Hot on the heels of ASBK announcing that they will host the inaugural ‘Australian All Wheels Race Fest’ at Phillip Island over the 19-21 February weekend, where the season opening ASBK round will join the TCR Australia Series, VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship and the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia, today ASBK also announced their intention to join the V8 Supercars in Darwin on the June 18-20 weekend.
With a jam-packed schedule including Stadium Super Trucks and Nitro Up North drag-racing, this ASBK round 4 means only the Kawasaki Superbike class will make the trek to the top end.
The two championships racing together in the 2+4 format has a long history, and the ASBK Management Team are very pleased to again be returning to Hidden Valley Raceway in 2021 with the support of the Northern Territory Government.
ASBK Championship contender, Yamaha Racing Team’s Aiden Wagner, represented the ASBK paddock at the official announcement this morning at Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin.
Minister for Major Events and Tourism Natasha Fyles
“It’s great we are welcoming the Australian Superbikes teams back to the Territory, and we have some very excited fans out there. Adding the Australian Superbikes to the program for the 2021 Darwin Triple Crown really ups the ante for next year’s event and means we are delivering the biggest Triple Crown program ever. Combined with the Supercars, Stadium Super Trucks and Nitro Up North drag racing spectacular, the Australian Superbikes will help us deliver an action-packed weekend of motorsports that people from all over the country will want to come to.”
Motorcycling Australia CEO – Peter Doyle
“Motorcycling Australia and ASBK are very excited with today’s announcement by the Northern Territory Government and Minister for Major Events and Tourism, Natasha Fyles, which will see Australia’s fastest two wheel athletes from the Australia Superbike Championship (ASBK) return to the spectacular Hidden Valley Raceway alongside the highly impressive Supercars Championship. Supercars at Hidden Valley is annual major event in the Northern Territory and ASBK is thrilled to be part of a jammed packed weekend of racing. Both our world class championships will be guaranteed to put on an extraordinary weekend of action for motor racing fans in the Northern Territory. We know race fans have been waiting for ASBK’s return to the top end, and we look forward to putting on spectacular racing next year with plenty of ASBK thrills and spills, for what will be a massive motorsport event not to be missed.”
Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2021 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, will be held at Winton Motor Raceway (March 12-14) and Wakefield Park Raceway (April 16-18).
Morgan Park has also been confirmed on the calendar for the weekend of August 20-22, 2021 before ASBK then heads to South Australia for round six at The Bend, September 23-26. The South Australian round will feature a Superbike Doubleheader of ASBK and FIM Asia Road Racing Championships.
ASBK have indicated that they intend to provide further announcements on the November Round 7 finale of the ASBK Championship at a later date.
ASBK have indicated that the Official ASBK Pre-Season Test will be staged over two-days at Phillip Island on January 27 and 28.
The 2021 Official ASBK Pre-Season Test will host bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup, YMI Supersport 300, YMF R3 Cup, Motorsports TV Supersport, and Kawasaki Superbike class competitors. Giving them their first chance to blowout their Christmas cobwebs and test new machinery and set-ups to their limits in preparation for a blockbuster 2021 ASBK Championship.

2020 mi-bike Australian Superbike Championship Points
The ASBK Management Team has today stated that Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2021 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, will be held at Winton Motor Raceway (March 12-14) and Wakefield Park Raceway (April 16-18).
There is no mention of round one, or indication as to where that might be. Generally the World Superbike Championship round plays host to the ASBK opener, but with WorldSBK organisers and Phillip Island recently stating that the WorldSBK event will not be scheduled until later in the year (Link), ASBK is unlikely to be able to open the season in conjunction with WorldSBK. Presumably, ASBK might take up the traditional late February or early March dates that WorldSBK would have normally made use of.
ASBK have indicated that the Official ASBK Pre-Season Test will be staged over two-days at Phillip Island on January 27 and 28. The day immediately prior is, of course, the Australia Day Public Holiday. I can imagine that team officials are already scrambling to try and secure accommodation.

The FIM, International series organisers DWO and MSVR are to collaborate on the future evolution of the Supersport racing category. The production derived intermediate class is long established, but as the motorcycle market evolves it is clear that changes are required to allow more motorcycle models to become eligible.
Taking recent experience from the Junior Supersport 300 category, where motorcycles of varying displacement and architecture are balanced to ensure parity of competition, the same principle could be applied to the future direction of the senior Supersport class.
In recent years the Supersport class has been bound by regulations to incorporate 600cc 4 cylinder, 675cc 3 cylinder and 750cc twin cylinder machines. As the market changes, motorcycles outside of this parameters now form the Supersport sector.
Planned new regulations could allow machines from different manufacturers that currently are not eligible to compete in the Supersport class adding value either to the teams and the series organiser.
MSVR, as the organiser of the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship, will pilot the evolution of the class in 2021 with the introduction of a Triumph 765 three cylinder machine, and later in the season a Ducati 955 twin cylinder machine. In a view to evaluate if this new technical regulations could be the platform for the 2022 FIM Supersport World Championship organised by DWO.
Stuart Higgs – Series Director, British Superbike Championship
“The Supersport class is tremendously important to the international and domestic racing structures. Previously multiple manufacturers and machine configurations have competitively raced together, but this has diminished given the changes in the market. To reset and redefine the category will provide a great stimulus and great future for the intermediate production derived class. I am very pleased and excited to be co-operating and working closely with our friends at the FIM and DWO on this project.”
Gregorio Lavilla – Executive Director, WorldSBK Sporting & Organization Department
“We are always open for better ways to improve the sport and I’m happy to see that our ideas match with so many Promoters at national level and the FIM. To have the support of MSVR helping to develop this idea is great and we will work closely with all parts involved for this to be a success, with the future to have equal regulations in both Championships and maybe other national series.”
Franck Vayssié – FIM Circuit Racing Commission Director
“Motorsport is a Worldwide big family, the FIM is more than happy to see all stakeholders working together to improve racing from National to World level. Since the creation of the class, Supersport has always offered a great show on track with some amazing fights for the title. Due to the current market situation, in order to keep this same level of interest and to keep the fairness for all teams and riders, it is absolutely necessary for FIM rules to be updated. All the FIM family support this idea and will work closely with promoters, organisers and manufacturers to move forward with this exciting project.”
