Fourth MotoGP crown far-fetched for Lorenzo in maiden Honda campaign

Spanish contender comments on transition to Repsol Honda for 2019.

Speaking openly on his transition to Repsol Honda for the first time, Jorge Lorenzo believes a fourth MotoGP crown in 2019 is a far-fetched idea.

The Spaniard, who went without a win for the first 18 months during his two years at Ducati, acknowledges his closest rivals have spent a number of years aboard their current machines, which will make challenging for the the title all the more difficult with just two tests under his belt on the RC213V.

“I do not know if I will be ready to fight for the world title from the first season at Honda,” Lorenzo explained. “For sure, I am going to try to be the best prepared for the first race in Qatar but it is not that simple, and even more now we have just three or four tests before the beginning of the season.

“You have to fight against Marc Márquez, who is a very good rider and it will be the sixth or seventh year on the same bike. It is very complicated, and not only him, I have to fight with Andrea Dovizioso, who is with his seventh year in Ducati, and Valentino Rossi, who has more than ten years with Yamaha.

“So, there are a lot of riders with a lot of experience with their own bikes that will be very difficult to beat. I do not know if I will be ready.”

The three-time MotoGP world champion commented on the harmonious feeling within the squad since appearing with them at Valencia last year, adding adjustments to his riding style and the bike will be necessary after a positive beginning on the title-winning contender.

“It was all great at the Valencia test, the first time I jumped onto the Honda, and the second time in Jerez, everything was unbelievable in the team,” he continued. “The team is so big, so professional, everything is perfect and they took care of all the details. They paid me a lot of attention, they looked after me a lot, they brought me all that I ask for and that is very important.

“I feel loved by them and for the moment everything is like that. The feeling on the bike is fantastic right now. I think, obviously, I still need to improve my riding style on the bike, I still need to make the bike more in my style but the beginning has been great.”

Repsol Honda will launch its 2019 colours at the team presentation scheduled for 23 January at Madrid in Spain, while the first test of the year is pencilled in for 6 February at Sepang in Malaysia.

Barcia kicks off Supercross opener with Anaheim 1 victory

Australia’s Reed ninth as Nichols earns maiden 250SX West win.

Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) has ended his main event win drought that extends back to 2013 after clinching victory at Saturday night’s opening round of the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross and FIM World Championship in Anaheim.

Privateer Dean Wilson (Husqvarna) led majority of the 20-minute encounter as he negotiated the rain-filled conditions with class, although with just five minutes left on the clock, the Husqvarna pilot ran into lapped traffic and relinquished the lead to Barcia.

Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen put in a consistent performance to kickstart his campaign with second, while Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was able to overcome Wilson in the dying stages to lock down the final position on the podium.

Wilson eventually wound up fourth ahead of Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), as Australia’s Chad Reed (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing) was ninth. Defending champion Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) endured a difficult opener, mustering up a 14th place result.

In the 250SX West main event, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Colt Nichols broke through for his maiden victory ahead of teammate Dylan Ferrandis, with Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM’s Shane McElrath closing out the top three. Fourth and fifth were completed by RJ Hampshire (Geico Honda) and Adam Cianciarulo (Pro Circuit Monster Energy Kawasaki).

Aussie contender Tomas Ravenhorst (Husqvarna) fell just short of making the main on debut in America, finishing 12th in his heat before recording an eighth in the LCQ. The AMA Supercross series will now head to Glendale this weekend for round two.

Team Honda 114 Motorsports confirms Evans signing

Young Australian’s 2019 MX2 World Championship plans finalised.

Image: Supplied.

North Queenslander Mitch Evans’ move to Team Honda 114 Motorsports has been made official, set to contest the 2019 MX2 World Championship full-time.

Evans, 20, confirmed in November that he had secured a deal to race in Europe as rumours mounted that he had landed a ride in place of US-bound countryman Hunter Lawrence.

“I am grateful for the opportunity that Honda 114 Motorsports has presented me,” Evans commented. “Racing in the FIM Motocross World Championship has been a goal of mine since I competed in the world junior championship in 2010. There is a lot for me to learn and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead. I am excited to be racing with the best in the world.”

It was initially thought that Evans had re-signed with Raceline KTM to remain in Australia, however the pair split prior to last year’s AUS-X Open Sydney when it’s understood Evans’ opportunity with Team Honda 114 Motorsports surfaced.

Evans starred last year by finishing second in the MX Nationals MX1 standings behind Dean Ferris, prior to delivering a glowing performance as part of Team Australia at RedBud’s Motocross of Nations. Alongside Lawrence and Kirk Gibbs, the trio placed fourth overall.

Team Honda 114 Motorsports will field Evans and Zachary Pichon – son of multiple world champion Mickael Pichon – in MX2 this season, set to debut when to season commences in Argentina on 2-3 March.

Maxwell shakes down Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-R1000R at Phillip Island

Former champion samples 2019 ASBK contender in Victoria.

Words: Russell Colvin

Two-time Australian Superbike champion Wayne Maxwell had his first taste of the Team Suzuki Ecstar Australia-prepared GSX-R1000R yesterday in a shakedown test at Victoria’s Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

After not having ridden a Suzuki GSX-R1000 since 2013, which was the year when Maxwell stormed to his maiden ASBK crown, Maxwell admitted that yesterday’s outing felt foreign and different throughout the initial stages.

However, straight away the 36-year-old Victorian rider managed to get down to a lap-time that he anticipated, ultimately clocking an unofficial best 1ms33.8s around the 4.445km seaside circuit.

“It was a very positive day as the team and I worked through a range of particular things, including testing a new range of the 2019 Pirelli spec tyres,” Maxwell explained to CycleOnline.com.au. “I worked closely with Warren [Monson] and we managed to get the setting a lot better towards the end of the day. I believe now we have a direction where we want to go with the bike set-up.”

“I’m just really looking forward to getting back on the bike on the first weekend of February for the official ASBK test next year. I don’t believe we are quite there yet, but it’s realistically where we are at right now. At the end of the day, it’s a ride day. There is a fair bit of traffic on track, so to be able to get consistent laps becomes difficult.

“I need to improve and simply just build my confidence up. Along with that, I just have to familiarise myself with the team and they have to exactly work out what I want. It does make it difficult when we are testing stuff which they are unfamiliar with as well. I don’t have the best of feedbacks as I’m not familiar with the new Suzuki GSX-R1000R. In saying that, it’s only going to get stronger and stronger.”

When speaking of the GSX-R1000 he piloted to the 2013 championship, the only characteristic Maxwell was able to relate to the 2018 GSX-R1000R the fact that both Suzuki GSX-R1000’s had strong power.

“The Suzuki GSX-R1000 have always produced smooth power,” he added. “On top of that the bike does handle very well and holds its line and is extremely stable in the corner. Apart from that, the 2013 bike has obviously changed a lot to the current spec GSX-R1000R. The 2018 bike has all the latest and greatest electronics, traction control and other stuff.

“It’s a very different package to what I rode in 2013. In saying that, Phil [Tainton] and the team have done a great job in developing the bike since they’ve had it. I believe now with a bit of my input and what they already know, Josh [Waters] and I as team can move forward.”

Next time Maxwell and Waters will be out on track will be at the official ASBK test, which is scheduled for 2-3 February at the Island ahead of the curtain raiser, which takes place on the final weekend of February running alongside the opening round of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Williams Event Management, promoter of the Pirelli MX Nationals, is set to introduce a three-round series dubbed the Yamaha bLU cRU 2-Stroke Amateur Nationals in 2019.

The series, backed by Yamaha Motor Australia and endorsed by Motorcycling Australia (MA), will be open to both junior and senior competitors, and is designed with the intention of grooming youthful talents for international events, particularly the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship.

“I was fortunate enough to spend a week at Horsham for the Junior Motocross World Championship,” said WEM director Kevin Williams. “During that week I had the opportunity to speak with the people from the FIM and majority of the international riders and their teams about two-stroke racing.”

“I was managing the mechanics area therefore I had the opportunity to gain some valuable knowledge during these conversations and it became very obvious that Australia are behind the rest of the MX world in helping to prepare our junior riders for international events, so I met with MA and we put a program together that would help in this area.”

MA CEO Peter Doyle added: “MA has had a long relationship with WEM, and we are pleased to be able to work alongside them with creating a series that will aid in the development of the junior riders in preparation for international competition. We will be looking at the results of the competitors in this series, along with other event results, during the selection process for the Australian junior world team.”

“The senior two-stroke classes are a great opportunity for the dads and other amateur level riders to put some fun back into their racing as well as encouraging some legends of the sport to pull their boots back on for some healthy competition against prior rivals and team mates. Therefore, as the new two-stroke series unfolds, it will bring out a great camaraderie amongst everyone and help create a family-friendly environment within the sport.”

Round one will take place at Traralgon in Victoria on 10 February, followed by Coolum, Queensland, on 3 March, and Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, on 27 April. Junior classes include 65cc (9-U12 years), 85cc and 125cc, while senior categories will boast two-stroke all powers and retro two-stroke (plus 20 years age of bike frame and engine) divisions.

Returning duo Daniel Sanders and Fraser Higlett will form the Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team for 2019 in the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) and Australian Four-Day Enduro (A4DE) events.

At 24 years of age, Sanders experienced an array of success throughout his first season with Husqvarna Motorcycles Australia this year, lifting the AORC E2 crown aboard a Husqvarna FE 450 and clinching a commanding maiden victory in the Hattah Desert Race riding a Husqvarna FE 501.

The versatile Victorian capped off the year by contributing to Team Australia’s incredible World Trophy victory at Chile’s International Six Days Enduro (ISDE), along with finishing third in the outright individual results and second in the E3 division. Next season could see Sanders step up to the Husqvarna FE 501 full-time off-road, that decision to be confirmed.

“I’m definitely excited to be back on-board with the Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team,” Sanders stated. “They were great to be a part of this season and I adapted really well to the four-stroke as well, so it’s shaping up to be a strong year in 2019.

“Now that we’ve learned so much together as a team, the plan is to go even better, be super-consistent and right there at the pointy-end. Winning is always the goal, that’s the objective of going racing and I’m confident that being part of Husqvarna Motorcycles Australia’s factory team with Fraser will provide a great platform to work from, that’s for sure.”

Higlett, 19, established himself as a rising star of the sport this season, earning runner-up honours in the AORC E1 title-fight after scoring an inspiring 10 podiums from 11 rounds. Impressing in his inaugural appearance at the ISDE, Higlett went on to assist the Australian Junior World Trophy to fifth position, while being ranked ninth in E1 standings.

“It’s a good feeling to be with the Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team for 2019, it’s just awesome to be a part of and I’m already keen to go racing next year,” said Higlett. “I was able to learn so much this season and picked up some good results along the way, so now we can take advantage of that experience and aim even higher in terms of results.

“To be alongside ‘Chucky’ as teammates is great for me, he’s a huge help and so is the entire team, so I’m really happy to be back for another season together.”

Team manager Christian Horwood commented: “We’re over the moon to sign both Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders and Fraser Higlett for 2019. As a team we achieved some fantastic results together in 2018 and it was a really good team dynamic that we worked within.

“Both riders have been outstanding since joining Husqvarna, they assist each other as much as they possibly can and we’re proud to welcome back our major sponsors for next year, so we are all set and are extremely excited to get things underway.”

The announcement confirms Husqvarna will downsize to a two-rider program in 2019, prompting the departure of Lachlan Stanford.

Supercross champion locks in deal ahead of the new year.

JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing has officially signed Chad Reed for the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, a welcomed last-minute deal that will see the Australian legend compete for at least one more season.

Reed initially started testing with the squad in August before competing in a number of events aboard the factory RM-Z450, including the Pro Motocross finale, Monster Energy Cup and the Monster Energy S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Champion that he won in New Zealand.

The two-time AMA Supecross and world champion remained committed to the outfit despite not having a deal place for extended period of time, the late announcement coming after an extensive search for funding with the team losing title sponsor Autotrader for 2019.

“Chad Reed is a consummate professional, and I see that he has that hunger to win,” said team manager Jeremy Albrecht. “I’m also eager to see Justin Hill race in the 450 class. The kid is an incredible talent.

“He has really ramped up his training program this off-season. I am looking forward to Weston Peick lining up to the gate when he’s healthy. Peick is a tough person and fierce competitor.”

Reed will join Justin Hill in the premier class as Weston Peick is set return once recovered from his injuries, while the team will continue to field a four-rider 250 squad consisting of Alex Martin, Jimmy Decotis, Kyle Peters and Enzo Lopes.
