Crutchlow, Nakagami: LCR’s Sachsenring gladiators

“Yeah, I’m happy enough. I qualified there in Assen, sixth there and sixth here,” said Crutchlow, who – like everyone else – is contemplating which tyres to use for Sunday’s race. “I think that’s about our pace this weekend, it’s going to be a really long difficult race and obviously the heat today didn’t help anybody’s tyres, but overall we’re happy enough. I’ve no idea (about tyres for the race), I used the really used rear tyre in FP4 and it was very difficult to manage, but that’s what it’s going to be like in the race.

Marquez sets sights on matching Rossi record

Repsol Honda Team rider Marc Marquez will start on pole for the tenth time at the Sachsenring, but it was no easy ride for the number 93 who was under pressure from French rookie Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT). Is the reigning World Champion on his way to making it ten out of ten in Saxony, or will a Yamaha uprising dethrone ‘The King of the Ring’? We’ll find out soon enough, but before we do, let’s whet that appetite with ten things you need to know ahead of the HJC Helmets Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland:

Rea Wins At Donington Park

I missed my pit board on my first lap but on the second lap I saw that I had quite a big gap already. I have been riding the Kawasaki for quite a few years now, and although we do not get to ride in the wet a lot, the wet setup is pretty good. Even in the change of conditions – completely wet, half wet or a drying track – it seems to be a bike that you can extract a lot of stability out of. So you can stop it well and then use your body weight to get through the corners. I knew if I could arrive at the limit of the package quite early I could take a gamble while the rest of the other guys got up to speed. At the end of the race I thought I should keep pushing on as I knew if there was a lapse of concentration it would be very easy for something to go wrong in these conditions. So I kept going right until the last lap and got it done. But it felt like a really long race! There is still a long way to go but after the Jerez sprint race the gap from the lead to us was 61 points. Now it has flipped over. It is racing and anything can happen. http://jonathan-rea.com/news/rea-wins-donington-park

Is Viñales the man who can stop Marquez’ Ring run?

Run number three was Viñales’ best. With a front medium and brand-new soft rear, the Assen winner was able to do six consecutive low 1:21s at the end of FP4, with a 1:21.153 his best time. Marquez did a longer opening stint on a hard front, medium rear, with the seven-time Champion managing 10 consecutive 1:21s, nine of them in the lower end of that bracket. Marquez then pitted, came out on the same set of tyres and managed to do four more mid to low 1:21s, including his personal best time of the session.

Ogden pulls the pin in Race 1 to extend his lead

Ogden took the holeshot from pole, getting a solid getaway but immediately joined in a top trio by Fenton Seabright and Cameron Horsman as they soon began to pull away from a group fight for fourth. It wouldn’t last long, however, as Seabright struck for the lead on Lap 2 before Horsman tried his hand at getting out front as well. But the number 22 was determined and he took over in the lead once again a lap later, with Scott Swann then breaking away from the freight train fight for fourth and trying to reel them in.

Resilient rookie: Quartararo takes P2 in Q2 after FP3 scare

“We were with a new tyre in the beginning [of FP3] and in the fourth lap I was still going full gas, at this time there was less grip because the soft is dropping off really fast,” continued Quartararo, explaining his wobble at the end of FP3. “It was 250km/h, I think, I had a big moment, but it was my mistake, I was too optimistic. Tomorrow we will need to take care of the tyres more.

Miller predicting a tyre lottery as he leads Ducati charge

“Then I threw another soft on at the end, it was good, I got through sector 1 really well but, at that point in time, I had nearly 6 laps on the front tyre and she was just a little bit too much. The other guys who used the three-stop strategy, they swapped bikes and used another front tyre. We’ll take it, we learned from it, the first Ducati on the second row, around here is quite important because it’s a bit of a parking lot on the first lap, especially with so many bikes around here.”

Tuuli smashes first ever E-Pole by 0.787

The Finnish rider was 0.181 under Garzo’s time in sector one, with Tuuli then blitzing the second sector to give himself an incredible 0.6 buffer. And Tuuli kept going, taking provisional E-Pole by 0.787. Free Practice leader Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) was now the only rider who could deny Tuuli of E-Pole, but could the Frenchman do it? The answer was no, with the 2008 125cc World Champion having to settle for P4.

Marquez beats Marini to pole after coming through Q1

After setting a new all-time Sachsenring lap record in Q1, Jorge Navarro (MB Conveyors Speed Up) was fired up for the second part of qualifying and came out to set the early pace, a 1:23.944 was the provisional benchmark. However, the Spaniard then crashed at Turn 13, the same place he did in FP3 – rider ok. His session was over and while over a tenth under in the first sector, Free Practice pacesetter Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) crashed out of contention at Turn 3 while sitting P13.
