Ducati Superleggera V4 rolls off production line

The first Ducati Superleggera V4 has finally rolled off the Borgo Panigale production line after being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 167kW (224hp) Superleggera V4 was unveiled in February just before the pandemic shut down the factory and put the project on ice.

In May, CEO Claudio Domenicali tweeted that their fastest and lightest bike yet was about to hit the production line.

A month later the bike has rolled out of the factory doors.

There is no price tag yet announced.  But as they say, if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it. Probably more than $A150,000.

The bike will be coming to Australia in the fourth quarter of 2020.

This is the #001 of the 500 units scheduled in a limited and numbered series; the only motorcycle in the world approved for road use with a frame, swingarm and carbon fibre rims, is finally available. A masterpiece of mechanical engineering, technique and “made in Italy” design, which sets a new benchmark in terms of performance, style and attention to detail.

The exclusivity of the materials and technical solutions adopted on the Superleggera V4 are also reflected in the maximum number of motorcycles envisaged: 500 numbered units accompanied by a certificate of authenticity . The progressive numbering of the motorcycles (XXX/500), coinciding with the chassis number, is shown on the steering head, and on the ignition key.
The first of the lucky owners of this fantastic bike has been invited to Borgo Panigale for a delivery ceremony and, in the next few days, he will personally meet Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO, to receive his Superleggera V4 001/500.

The uniqueness of the Superleggera V4 project is underlined by the experiences that Ducati together with Ducati Corse have exclusively reserved for the owners of the motorcycle: the “Superbike Experience” – the possibility for all fans who purchase a Superleggera V4 to be able to try out the Panigale V4 R that takes part in the SBK World Championship on track at Mugello. Even more incredible and exclusive is the opportunity – limited to 30 owners of the Superleggera V4 – to purchase access to the “MotoGP Experience “, thus realizing the dream of every sports motorcycle enthusiast. Each motorcycle is equipped with a Racing kit: complete exhaust for Akrapovič racing track use in titanium; open clutch cover in carbon fibre; swingarm cover in carbon fibre with titanium “slider”; headlamp and light replacement kit; license plate holder removal kit; side stand removal kit; mirror replacement aluminium caps from billet; Ducati Data Analyzer + GPS (DDA + GPS); racing fuel cap, brake lever protection, motorcycle cover; front and rear stand and battery charger.

The bike is delivered inside a wooden crate with specially made customization for the transport of this “made in Borgo Panigale” masterpiece.

The Superleggera V4 is the only motorcycle in the world, approved for road use, with the entire load-bearing structure of the chassis (frame, subframe, swingarm and rims), made of composite material, obtaining, for these components only, a weight saving of 6.7 kg compared to those of the Panigale V4 MY20. To ensure the highest quality and safety standards, these components are 100% controlled by the most sophisticated techniques borrowed from the aerospace industry, such as thermography, ultrasound checks, and tomography.
The specific set-up of the chassis gives an unparalleled deceleration capacity, an extraordinary speed of descent when cornering and a marked tendency of the bike to close the trajectories when exiting corners.

Many components are made of carbon fibre , modelled in advanced aerodynamic shapes. These include the fairing, which reaches efficiency levels higher than those of today’s MotoGP bikes, which are limited in this by the current technical regulations. Thanks to the aerodynamic biplane appendages inspired by Ducati’s 2016 MotoGP bike, the most highly-performing in this field, it is able to guarantee a vertical load of 50 kg of “downforce” at 270 km/h, 20 kg more than that produced by the wings of the Panigale V4 MY20 and V4R. This downforce improves acceleration by counteracting the tendency to wheelie and increases braking stability.

The carbon fairings are embellished with a livery inspired by the Desmosedici GP19, with an alternation of lines and depths between the red colour of the GP19 and the visible carbon that highlight the shapes, the materials and the technical details. The red continues on the coloured sides of the OEM Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres, specifically developed in the construction for the Superleggera V4.

The most powerful and lightest Desmosedici Stradale R engine is hidden under the carbon skin. The 998 cc 90° V4 unit of the Superleggera V4 weighs 2.8 kg less than the 1,103 cc V4 and, thanks to the Akrapovič approved exhaust, produces 224 hp of power in road configuration(EU homologation value), which becomes 234 hp by mounting the titanium Akrapovič exhaust for track use, which is included in the Racing Kit supplied with the bike.

Ducati Superleggera V4The racing connotation of the engine is emphasized by the use of a dry clutch and by the timing of the Desmodromic system made manually by a specialist who, after checking, confirms the positive result by affixing his signature on the metal plate that embellishes the carbon cover of the rear cylinder bank.

Only on the Superleggera V4, by loading the engine calibration for the racing exhaust, is it possible to enable the display of the “RaceGP” dashboard. Intended for circuit use only, it derives from that of the Desmosedici GP20 dashboard designed on the indications of Andrea Dovizioso.

Thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre, components made of titanium, magnesium and others from aluminium billet, the Superleggera V4 shows a dry weight of 159 kg on the scale (16 kg less than the Panigale V4), for a power/weight ratio of 1.41 hp/kg. A record value for a homologated sports bike. In track configuration, by mounting the Racing kit supplied with the bike, the power rises to 234 hp and the weight drops to 152.2 kg, with a power/weight ratio of 1.54 hp/kg.

The electronic controls have also been evolved in a purely racing perspective. By default, the operating parameters of these are associated with three reprogrammed Riding Modes with specific names (Race A, Race B and Sport). In addition, for the first time five Riding Modes can be added, customizable with your favourite settings. The rider can monitor lap times through the evolution of the Lap Timer, which now allows you to store the coordinates of the finish line and the split times of five favourite circuits, so as to recall them every time you go out on the track without having to repeat the data logging procedure. By default the system proposes the coordinates of the finish line and intermediates of Laguna Seca, Mugello, Jerez, Sepang and Losail.
Added to this is a latest-generation electronic package that includes EVO 2 strategies for DTC and DQS up/down.

The braking system is the best of Brembo production with an MCS radial pump equipped with a remote control for adjusting the distance of the lever and Stylema® R calipers, an exclusive of the Superleggera V4 that allows greater consistency of front brake travel in long runs on the track.

All this translates into a level of performance of absolute importance. Alessandro Valia, official Ducati tester, with Racing Kit and slick tyres, lapped the Mugello circuit in 1m52.45s , less than two seconds away from the time of the Panigale V4R SBK winner with Michele Pirro in CIV 2019.

An example of maximum attention to detail is the aluminium radiator cap machined from billet and the dedicated ignition key with aluminium insert on which the motorcycle number is indicated.

The Superleggera V4 is an extreme machine, devised and designed to achieve maximum performance on the circuit, but at the same time guaranteeing the reliability and ease of use requirements typical of a sports motorcycle homologated for road use. With this motorcycle Ducati pushes the limit even further. The technical competence and knowledge developed and continuously evolved in MotoGP is made available to fans of technique and performance on two wheels.

Ducati Superleggera V4 is super sexy

We already knew the Ducati Superleggera v4 would be super light and super powerful and now we can see it’s super sexy and super exclusive!

The 159kW (214hp) Superleggera V4, unveiled overnight, is wrapped in exposed carbon-fibre and other exotic materials with a Desmosedici GP19-inspired livery.

It will be limited to 500 exclusive units with no price tag yet announced.  But as they say, if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.

Ducati expects this bike will be shipped around the world by its cashed-up buyers to be ridden on some of the world’s most famous tracks.

There they will be able to monitor lap times via the exclusive lap timer that records finish line and split times for five circuits: Laguna Seca, Mugello, Jerez, Sepang and Losail.

These can be recalled at the start of each track day without having to repeat the set-up procedure.

Buyers of the Superleggera V4 will also get to ride exclusive Ducati race bikes: the WSB Panigale V4 on the Mugello test track and the Desmosedici GP20 used by Dovizioso and Petrucci, with the close support of the Ducati Corse technicians.Ducati Superleggera V4

As you would expect, there is a host of exclusive details from a solid aluminium radiator cap to a dedicated ignition key with an aluminium insert showing the bike number.

The bike ID number (XXX/500), which matches the VIN, is displayed on the frame, fork yoke and ignition key.

Ducati has not made pricing and full tech pecs publicly available.

However, select Ducati VIPs (that’s those who’ve previously bought their exclusive bikes) have received a e-mail signed by CEO Claudio Domenicali  which has a link to an exclusive page with these details.

Ducati says deliveries will start in June 2020 in Europe at a limited rate of only five bikes a day with all bikes produced this year.

Superleggera customers can also buy an exclusive Superleggera V4 Dainese leather suit with integrated air-bag and an Arai carbon fibre helmet in the bike’s colours and graphics.

Super light

The Superleggera V4 is the world’s only street-legal motorcycle with the entire load-bearing structure of the chassis (frame, subframe, swingarm and wheels) made from composite material.

That helps it achieve a dry weight of just 159kg which is 16kg less than the Panigale V4, resulting in a record power-to-weight ratio of 1.41hp/kg.

But wait, there’s more … or less!

In track kit, power is increased to 175kW (234hp) and weight drops to 152.2kg, raising the power-to-weight ratio to 1.54hp/kg.

Apart from their GP models, this is the most powerful motorcycle ever produced by the Bologna manufacturer.

Ducati says their official tester, Alessandro Valia, took the bike, fitted with the racing kit and slick tires, around the Mugello circuit in 1:52:45.

That’s less than two seconds from the lap time of the Panigale V4 R SBK, winner of the 2019 Italian Motorspeed Championship (CIV) with Michele Pirro.

Ducati claims the lightweight components have been “100% tested using the most sophisticated techniques borrowed from the aerospace industry, such as thermography, ultrasound inspections and tomography”.

The chassis dimensions have been modified for optimised track use by increasing the length of the swingarm.

“The overall result is unparalleled deceleration power, faster leaning down into corners and sharper lines riding out of bends,” Ducati says in its official press release.

They also claim the carbon fibre fairing with biplane winglets has greater aerodynamic efficiency than the current MotoGP bikes.

Superleggera V4 provides downforce of 50kg at 270km/h, 20kg more than on the Panigale V4 MY20 and V4 R.

The 998cc  90° Desmosedici Stradale R engine is also lighter and more powerful.

It weighs in at 2.8kg less than the 1103cc V4 and when fitted with the road-legal Akrapovič exhaust produces 167kW (224hp) while the track-only titanium Akrapovič exhaust lifts in the track kit lifts that to 175kW.

The track kit is included in the purchase price.

There is also a dry clutch and an individual manual adjustment of the Desmodromic timing system.

The Superleggera V4 display was designed with input from Andrea Dovizioso.

Electronic controls are designed for racing nature of this motorcycle with the latest traction controls, up/down quickshifter three reprogrammed riding modes (Race A, Race B and Sport).

For the first time there are five extra modes that can be personalised with the rider’s preferred settings.

Other exclusive items include a lighter Öhlins suspension system, with a pressurised fork and lighter machined aluminium fork bottoms, a titanium shock absorber spring and GP-derived valves for improved damping on road bumps in the initial compression stage.

Brembo supplies the brakes, with an MCS calliper featuring a remotely adjusted lever gap and Stylema R callipers for greater front-brake stroke consistency in long track runs.

Ducati launches Project 1708 (Superleggera)

Ducati launches Project 1708 which is code for the V4 Superleggera on Thursday (6 February 2020).

It is expected to be one of the world’s most powerful street-legal super bikes with 167kW (224hp) at 15,250 revs.

Throw on the optional Akrapovic full racing exhaust system and power is boosted to 174kW (234bhp), even beating the supercharged Kawasaki H2 at 171kW (230hp).

That compares with the Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory at 162kW (217hp) and new Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade with 160kW (212hp).

CEO Claudio Domenicali gushed about the project in this invitation:

All the bikes we produce are a declaration of our desire for perfection. But nothing is comparable with the Project 1708 is a true statement of intent, it is thew monument in which we draw a line between trying and doing. Iy is out most pioneering creature.

As we can see from the top image plus this leaked photo (above), it will feature a lot of lightweight carbon-fibre bike.

So the bike will weigh just 152kg which is 20kg less than the V4R, hence the term superleggera (super light).

The Superleggera’s Desmosedici Stradale R V4 engine is a big jump up from the “standard” V4 with (155kW/208hp, 124Nm) and V4S/R (top of page) with 159kW (214hp).

However, it is expected to have a super cost as well at $US100,000 (about $A145,000).

Superleggera will be produced in a limited edition of 500. We expect they will only be available here on order.

It will also feature MotoGP livery, exotic components (top-shelf Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspension) with all-LED lighting.

Ducati is expected to start production in April 2020 with deliveries the following month.

Like the V4R, it will have bi-place wings plus extra winglets to increase downforce at 270km/h from 30kg to 50kg.

Ducati Panigale V4R joins Abu Dhabi cops

If you plan on speeding in Abu Dhabi, you better be riding something special.

Abu Dhabi police department has just added eight Ducati Panigale V4 motorcycles to its already impressive fleet of supercars that include a Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Aventador.

They need the high-speed bike, too, because many in the rich United Arab Emirates own supercars and exotic motorcycles.

And the speed limits are high. Abu Dhabi last year set its highest speed limit of 160km/h on the new four-lane highway running into the capital.

They set the speed cameras at 161km/h, rather than the 20km/h buffer elsewhere, but rich drivers don’t care about copping fines as they can afford them.

Fines for exceeding the speed limit by more than 60km/h are only about $A400.

Mind you, speeding by more than 60km/h attracts 12 “black points” (demerit points) and your licence is confiscated for 30 days. If you accumulate 24 points, you lose your licence for three months.

The Abu Dhabi police department has had some exotic high-speed pursuit vehicles over the years  to catch super-speedsters.

They include: Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT, BMW i8 hybrid sports car, Brabus 700, Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, Lykan HyperSport, Mercedes-Benz SLS-AMG, Nissan GT-R and Porsche Panamera.

Now they have added the Ducati to not only pursue at high speed, but split through traffic snarls.

And not just your run-of-the-mill 214hp V4, either.

No, they have gone for the 10kg lighter V4R with 221hp (165kW).

Ducati blitz adds two Scrambler 1100 models

Ducati’s Scrambler 1100 is expected to have another couple of variants when the company unveils its blitz of 2020 models on 23 October 2019.

The company recently filed documents with the US emission agency for a “Scrambler 1100 Pro” and “Scrambler 1100 Pro Sport”.

They will have the same 1079cc, L-twin motor with 62kW and 88Nm.

Ducati already has a Scrambler 1100 Sport model (pictured above) with Ohlins suspension.

So the “Pro” addition could be off-road models like the 803cc Scrambler Desert Sled with taller suspension and knobby tyres. It could also feature electronic suspension adjustment.

It would be an obvious move to compete with the Triumph Scrambler 1200 with 66.2kW and 110Nm.

Ducati is set for a blitz of up to seven new 2020 models and variants in October.

They have already announced the Streetfighter V4 will be released as a 2020 model.

We’ve also seen spy photos of a Multistrada V4 and we suspect there might also be a Monster V4 in the works.

And last month a leaked document from the US Environmental Protection Agency listed the “Multistrada 1260 S Grand Tour” and “Scrambler Icon Dark”.

Since the Multistrada GT will be powered by the 1262cc L-Twin engine as the name suggests, maybe the Multistrada V4 is on hold for another year.

Or they may be considering running two Multi ranges with twin and four-cylinder engines.

We also expect the Grand Tour will have luggage and a bigger windscreen.

As for the 803cc Scrambler Icon Dark, it is likely to have a blackened engine and matte-black paint instead of its iconic yellow.

Whatever their model blitz in October is composed of, every model will have blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control, as they announced in April 2018.

Photo shows Ducati Multistrada V4 is coming

This spy photo from Motorrad  magazine seems to prove that Ducati is introducing a Multistrada V4 version as we tipped earlier this month.

The Multistrada V4 is expected to be unveiled on October 23 when Ducati will release its 2020 model range.

It comes hot on the heels of Ducati announcing a naked Streetfighter V4 will be unveiled in October as a 2020 model.

A prototype was recently raced at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.

Sadly, four-time winner Carlin Dunne crashed and died on the final corner on his way to victory and a record time. Motorcycle races at the hillclimb have been suspended next year.

Multistrada V4

Now it seems the Streetfighter V4 street version may be accompanied by a Multistrada V4.

Earlier this month motorcycle magazine Motorrad claimed it had seen the bike out testing in Borgo Panigale, home of the Ducati factory in north-east Italy.

They did not have any images to prove their sighting, but they have now published iomages from this Facebook post by Luca Moncalieri, Managing Director of Ducatisti Integralisti,Pavia, Italy.

A Multistrada V4 makes a lot of sense as does a Monster version.

Will there be any L-twins left?

Streetfighter V4 is expected to have similar power to the Panigale V4’s 158kW (213hp).

It had been suggested the street production version may be a little tamer. However, it is likely to still be more than the Aprilia Tuono’s 173hp (129kW).

The Multistrada is likely to be tuned for less top end and more low-down power and torque.

The current Multistrada 1260 has 117kW (158hp) output.

The new V4 models are likely to have front and rear radar for blind spot alerts and cornering ABS as Ducati has previously said it would add these features to its entire range in 2020.

The tech is part of the company’s joint development with Audi of safety technology to fit into an automated driving future.

Ducati V4 wheelies at touch of a button

How would you like to wheelie a Ducati Panigale V4 S at the touch of a button?

Well, now you can! However, it’s not the real thing, but a self-balancing 1:6 scale toy from Spin Master Toys costing about $A270 when it is released in August.

The Ducati-licensed Upriser has a top speed of about 20km/h and can drift, pull wheelies and do burnouts at the touch of a button.

The Upriser maintains balance by 12 small counter-rotational wheels in the rear wheel and controlled by dual optical sensors.

It is just over 35cm long and 26.5cm tall and includes working LED headlight and suspension.

Watch Aussie rider’s Pikes Peak record run

Australian motorcycle journalist Rennie Scaysbrook has posted a video of his record run at the recent Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado.

The event was marred by the death of four-time winner Carlin Dunne on the last turn while riding the Ducati Streetfighter V4 prototype. He was on his way to victory and a record run.

The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb organising committee is now considering the future of the motorcycle category in the event in the wake of two other motorcycle fatalities in 2014-15 and the fourth rider death in the event’s history.

The event has run since 1916, but motorcycles did not race for 10 years from 1977-79 and 1983-90.

Organisers are investigating whether a series of bumps in the last corner caused Carlin’s bike to high-side.

Australian motorcycle journalist Rennie Scaysbrook has posted a video of his record run at the recent Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado.

Carlin’s sad fatality does not take away from Rennie’s victory and record run in the heavy motorcycle class.

The Australian, who is now working in America at Cycle News, set a record time of 9:44.963 riding a 2018 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100. He smashed the record by five seconds.

The Tuono was in “nearly showroom stock” condition.

Rennie says he would like to dedicate his record-run video to the memory of the late Carlin Dunne. 

“This was a man who helped me to no end as a mentor in my rookie year, went head-to-head with me and came out on top in 2018, and was on course to smash the lap record again this year until fate struck,” Rennie says.

“I’m honoured to have shared this race with him, and thanks to Aprilia for such an amazing team.”

Ducati Panigale marks 916 25th anniversary

You better get in quick with your orders, because Ducati is producing only 500 Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916 motorbikes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary 916.

The 25th anniversary edition will be unveiled at this weekend’s American round of the Superbike championship at Laguna Seca by four-time World Superbike champion Carl “Foggy” Fogarty (above).

Ducati team riders Álvaro Bautista and Chaz Davies will compete at the event on bikes with a special livery inspired by the Panigale V4 25° Anniversario 916.

Apart from graphics and limited-edition numbering, it doesn’t appear that the bike has any other extras.

The ground-breaking 916cc Ducati was a masterpiece by famous designer Massimo Tamburini with its iconic twin underseat exhausts, twin-eyed headlights, gold trellis frame, single-sided swingarm and elegantly simple lines.

The 25th anniversary edition follows the recent news that Ducati will produce a Streetfighter V4 and rumours that there will also be a Multistrada V4.

Maybe there will also be Hypermotard and Monster versions powered by the V4 Desmosedici Stradale engine.

Is Ducati planning a Multistrada V4?

Hot on the heels of Ducati announcing a naked Streetfighter version of its Panigale V4, rumours have surfaced that the Italian company is planning a Multistrada V4.

The Streetfighter V4 production version will be unveiled this year as a 2020 model and a prototype was recently raced at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.

Sadly, four-time winner Carlin Dunne crashed and died on the final corner on his way to victory and a record time.

Multistrada V4

Now it seems the Streetfighter V4 street version may be accompanied by a Multistrada V4, according to German motorcycle magazine Motorrad.

The magazine claims it has seen the bike out testing in Borgo Panigale, home of the Ducati factory in north-east Italy.

There are no images available to prove their sighting, but it makes a lot of sense for Ducati to use the engine in other model variants.

Who knows, they could also be planning a Monster version!

Streetfighter V4 is expected to have similar power to the Panigale V4’s 158kW (213hp).

It had been suggested the street production version may be a little tamer. However, it is likely to still be more than the Aprilia Tuono’s 173hp (129kW).

The Multistrada is likely to be tuned for less top end and more low-down power and torque.

The current Multistrada 1260 has 117kW (158hp) output.

A Multistrada V4 could make its debut alongside the Streetfighter V4 at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in November.

If it does, the bike is likely to have front and rear radar for blind spot alerts and cornering ABS as Ducati has previously said it would add these features to its entire range in 2020.

The tech is part of the company’s joint development with Audi of safety technology to fit into an automated driving future.
