Significant updates for Triumph Speed Twin

2021 Triumph Speed Twin

Triumph’s modern generation Speed Twin brought a more muscular and purposeful roadster style stance than the majority of the Triumph Modern Classics line and has been quite a hit.

3PS more peak power, now 100PS at 7,250rpm

Since its introduction in 2018, Triumph have put over 11,000 new Speed Twins on the road.  The Brits are not resting on those laurels though and are bringing a comprehensively updated Speed Twin to market this year.

More mid-range power and torque

The 1200 cc parallel-twin has been heavily revised to meet Euro5 requirements and along the way picks up a few ponies and more mid-range grunt.

Peak torque now lower down the rev range, with 112Nm at 4,250rpm

The peak torque figure of 112 Nm now arrives 500 rpm earlier, 4250 rpm to be exact.

1200 cc – Liquid cooled, 8 valve, SOHC, 270° parallel twin

Peak pony is 98.6 horsepower at 7250 rpm.

More responsive with a 17% reduction in inertia

Triumph claim that engine inertia has been reduced by 17 per cent which sees the mill spin up faster and go on to a red-line 500 rpm higher than before thanks to valve spring and cam-chain tensioner changes. It will be interesting to see if in the real world the reduced inertia is a positive or negative as I really do like the beat of the heavier cranked 1200 twins and feel it adds greatly to the character of the mill. The engine is claimed to be much more responsive though so hopefully the trade-off proves worthwhile.

High 10,000 mile / 16,000km first major service interval

Triumph’s well proven slip-assist clutch helps shuffling up and down the six-speed box to be amenable but no quick-shifter is available.

New higher specification Marzocchi USD forks with cartridge damping

Higher-spec 43 mm Marzocchi cartridge forks grace the front end of the machine with uprated radial Brembo M5 calipers and 320 mm floating discs. The rear shock valving has been tweaked to match the new settings up front.

New higher specification Brembo M50 radial monobloc calipers

The rolling stock has also been updated with new 12-spoke cast alloy rims shod with Metzeler Racetec RR rubber.

New stylish 12-spoke wheels

Brushed stainless-steel upswept megaphone silencers present the classic look while the headlight mounts are now anodised and the graphics on the 14.5-litre tank tweaked.

New brushed stainless-steel twin upswept silencers

Riding modes have also been tweaked with Rain, Road and Sport modes all featuring their own dedicated traction control settings and throttle maps. Traction control can also be turned off, coz, wheelies!

3D clocks incorporate a digital menu system accessed by the scroll button mounted on the handlebar

The Speed Twin offers a slightly more relaxed riding position than the Thruxton with pegs positioned 38 mm further forward and 4 mm lower that the sportier option in the Triumph Classics range.

Accessible 809mm seat height, a slim stand over width, tapered handlebars

Seat height remains Daffy and Daphne Duck friendly 809 mm with the pillion pad almost as low the rider.

Pegs are 38mm further forward and 4mm lower than the Thruxton

Tyre pressure monitoring and heated grips remain optional extras but a USB charging socket is standard as are LED lights all round.

Signature LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) is incorporated into the headlight.

There is no disputing the Speed Twin is a very handsome motorcycle and it is clear that in this update Triumph have gone much further than just adding Euro5 certification.

New graphics on the 14.5 litre fuel tank

We know the engines are strong and with 16,000 kilometre service intervals long-term ownership costs will be minimal. I look forward to riding it.

Peak torque now lower down the rev range, with 112Nm at 4,250rpm

Triumph recalls Thruxton and Speed Twin

A spokesman for the Australian distributor, Peter Stevens Importers, confirms “Australian bikes are affected and customers are being contacted as information comes to hand”.

If an official notice is posted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission with VINs , we will update this article so you can check your VIN to see if it is affected.

Thruxton recall

Triumph Thruxton and Rocket TFCThruxton TFC

The sidestand recall apparently affects 2016-2018 Thruxton, 2016-2019 Thruxton R, and 2020 Thruxton TFC models.

It seems the spring may vibrate through resonance, weakening it and causing it to break.

If this happens, it could allow the side stand switch to activate and shut off the engine.

The replacement spring sits inside a rubber sleeve, preventing the resonance.

Speed Twin recall

Triumph Speed Twin a poor-man's ThruxtonSpeed Twin

Affected 2019-2020 Speed Twin models may develop a loose ball joint in the gearshift lever linkage thanks to contaminated thread locking compound.

This could result in excessive movement at the end of the shift lever and riders will find gear shifts more difficult or even impossible.

Triumph can fix this issue by simply applying a new thread locking compound to the existing components.

This follows a Speed Twin recall last year for leaking coolant.

Owners of the above motorcycles should ask to schedule an inspection with an authorised Triumph Dealer “as soon as possible”. If it needs a fix, it will be free of charge.

Bonneville recalls

The “Bonneville” range has been the subject of several recalls since they were introduced in 2016:

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Triumph Speed Twin a poor-man’s Thruxton

Triumph has unveiled their Speed Twin which is a poor-man’s Thruxton with the same engine tuning, but not quite the braking or handling spec of the sporty Thruxton R.

It also doesn’t have the dropped bars, but a more relaxed riding position like the T120.

Unlike the spy shots we saw last month, the Speed Twin comes with Kayaba conventional forks and shocks, not upside down forks and Ohlins piggyback suspension.Triumph Speed Twin a poor-man's Thruxton

Triumph Motorcycles Australia say the bikes will arrive in January/February with pricing closer to the release date.

We suspect they will retail for about $18,000 which is more than the T120 at $17,200.Triumph Speed Twin a poor-man's Thruxton

However, it should be under the Thruxton at $18,700 and well under the Ohlins-clad Thruxton R at $21,100.

The Speed Twin is basically a dual-seat Thruxton with straight bars, brushed metal and black dual exhausts, and seven-spoke mag wheels instead of wired-wheels.

It will come in three colour options: Silver Ice/Storm Grey, Korosi Red/Storm Grey, and Jet Black.

The unveiling of the Speed Twin lifts the number of 900 and 1200 Bonneville models to 12.

It follows the recent release of the Scrambler 1200 in XC and XE versions, T120 Ace and Diamond and updates to the Street Twin and Street Scrambler.

2019 Triumph Speed Twin | 196kg | 112 Nm | 96 hp

Triumph’s Speed Triple formed a large part of the backbone that has grown the modern era of Hinckley Triumphs and for 2019 Triumph will add some more vertebrae to that spine with the introduction of a beautiful new 1200 cc Speed Twin.

Triumph Australia are expecting first stocks of the new machine to land in late January or early February, with final pricing to be set around the middle of January.

Re-introducing another legendary Triumph name, the British brand this time harks back to the 1938 Triumph Speed Twin for inspiration. This new era Speed Twin sets a new benchmark for retro roadster performance thanks to a 10 kg lighter dry weight than the highly successful Thruxton.

The 196 kg (dry) Speed Twin also promises to deliver ergonomics and comfort levels somewhere between the Thruxton and the T 120 with a new bench seat only 807 mm from the ground, a figure that will light up the faces of those with short legs.

While the Speed Twin is much lighter than the Thruxton it does share identical engine performance with its sibling, 96 hp at 6750 rpm and 112 Nm of torque peaking at a lowly 4950 rpm.

The engine is 2.5 kg ligher than the Thruxton powerplant due to a magnesium cam cover and the trimming of other engine covers, along with other measures.

While the Speed Twin’s frame is based on the Thruxton R it is unique for the new model and matched up with 41 mm cartridge forks and Brembo four-piston stoppers.

The KYB forks appear to be non-adjustable, no doubt that will come in a follow up R model at some stage.

The sculpted fuel tank, complete with locking Monza style filler, holds 14.5-litres of fuel which against the promised 4.8 litre per 100 km economy promises a touring range of almost 300 km.

As you would expect from a modern Triumph the Speed Twin is ride-by-wire and features the full gamut of electronic safety aids with riding modes, ABS and switchable traction control. A slip-assist clutch also adds some mechanical safety into the equation.

Triumph teases 2019 Speed Twin

This teaser video shows glimpses of the 2019 Triumph Speed Twin which was expected to be unveiled at the recent European motorcycle shows but will be launched on December 4.

The video only shows dark and blurry images and some very short glimpses of the 1200cc bike in silhouette.

While the Street Twin ($13,700) is the cheapest version of the 900cc range, the Speed Twin may not be the cheapest version of the 1200 range.

In spy shots, we have seen it fitted with expensive Ohlins suspension.

Speed Twin spy shot

However, in the video it seems to have more budget-conscious gaitered conventional forks and non-piggyback shocks.

Other features we can see include low-profile mirrors, twin instrument pods, straight bench seat, straight bars, a chopped front fender and seven-spoke mag wheels.Triumph Speed Twin

It is difficult to see whether it has dual brake discs as in the spy shots, but we would expect so.

Perhaps, like the recently launched Scrambler 1200 in XC and XE versions, the Speed Twin will come in two version.

The top-spec variant could have Ohlins and other juicy gear.

There is no word yet on when it will arrive in Australia or pricing.

Current Bonneville 1200 prices range from the T120 at $17,200 to the Thruxton 1200 R at $21,100.
