Can-Am Spyder RT recall on brake fault

Bombardier Recreational Products has issued a global recall on the three-wheel 2020 Can-Am Spyder RT for a possible brake issue.

Although the official notice has not yet been published in by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, BRP Australia spokesman Brian Manning says

the global recall “likely impacts VINs in Australia”.

He says owners can access this US site and enter their Vehicle Identification Number to see if their roadster is included.

Spyder RT recall

20202 Can-Am Spyder RT

The safety recall report says that a faulty brake mechanism support could cause the Spyder RT to lose braking capacity.

The support designed to hold the braking mechanism shows shrinkage cavities—a flaw that forms during the component’s molding process.

This can cause the piece to be weaker than usual, depending on where the cavities formed, and reduce its resistance.

Should a higher-than-normal pressure be applied to the brake pedal, the support could potentially break, severing the link between the brake pedal and the rear braking system.

Obviously, this could have disastrous consequences.

The component is new for 2020 and the flaw was discovered during the assembly process.

Dealers have been notified of this issue and the recall is expected to begin next month.

Most owners won’t be able to ride them in the current pandemic lockdown, but they should be careful with the brakes and bring the RT in to be fixed.

Dealers will install a bracket to solidify the faulty component, free of charge.

The Can-Am Spyder has not had a recall since 2013 where there were recalls for spontaneous fires and brake issues.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Yamaha recall R3 over brake fault

Yamaha Motor Australia has issued an immediate safety recall of its learner-approved 2019 YZF-R3A over a fault with the front brake hose.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the bracket supporting the front brake hose may dislodge.

It says this could cause “friction between the brake hose and the front fork, resulting in brake fluid loss”.

“If the brake system loses fluid, the effectiveness of the brakes decreases, increasing the risk of an accident causing serious injury to the rider and other road users,” the notice says.

Owners should “immediately” contact their local Yamaha Dealer and arrange to have a replacement brake hose bracket fitted at no charge.

Consumers can find their nearest authorised Yamaha dealership by visiting https://www.yamaha-motor.com.au

The vehicle identification numbers for the 202 affected bikes are listed at the end of this article.

This LAMS model has now been recalled over 10 fault issues since 2015.

Issues include such as radiator leaks, gear shift problems, noisy gears, engine vibrations, fuel leaks, loss of electrical power, engine stalling, clutch failures and handlebar crown cracking.

It is also the second recall from Yamaha this week after a fault with their 2017-19 XP530A scooter stands.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Another recall over faulty motorcycle stands

The second recall this week over faulty stands seems to point to a failing among modern motorcycle side and centre stands that are lightweight and flimsy.

Earlier this week, the Triumph Thruxton was recalled over a side stand spring that can break off and cause the engine to stall.

Now Yamaha has recalled 78 of their 2017-19 XP530A scooters because the main stand “may crack and break due to substandard welding”.

Yamaha XP530A 2018 Scooter standYamaha XP530A (Image supplied by Yamaha without the scooter miraculously standing without any aid from a stand!)

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says if the scooter stand cracks, “the scooter could fall and cause a serious crush injury to the rider or bystanders”.

Yamaha will contact “all known affected consumers” directly to arrange for inspection and, if necessary, a new strengthened stand.

However, recall notices don’t always reach the owners, which is why we publish them.

No recall notification

British rider Randall Munroe says he crashed his 2012 Triumph Explorer after the side stand broke loose.

“When I went online to look up the part number I discovered that there had been a recall for the side stand bolt but I had never been notified,” he says.

“When I contacted the dealer they blamed me so I went up the chain and eventually contacted Triumph UK. In short, they did nothing.

“Wouldn’t even replace the broken and damaged parts – I had to pay for them myself. I did contact a lawyer after Triumph refused to deal with the problem but was told that I wouldn’t get anywhere with a claim unless I had missed work due to injury but I was retired at the time.

“Just a caution for every bike owner to keep informed of recalls as you can’t trust the manufacturer to be responsible!”

Other recalls involving side and centre sands in recent years include the Ducati Multistrada S, Honda CRF1000 Africa Twin, Kawasaki H2 SX and BMW G 310 models.

Faulty stands

1948 Vincent RapideThe 1948 Vincent Rapide had not one, but two sturdy side stands

So what is wrong with modern side and centre stands – that’s if they even include the latter!

Remember when side and centre stands were big and chunky and made of steel?

Remember when you could actually have a sleep on your bike parked in the shade of a tree, comfortable in the knowledge it wouldn’t fall over?

And remember when you could pull your bike over to pivot on its side stand to turn the bike around on its own axis?

You wouldn’t try that with modern bikes.

It seems in an effort to reduce weight and therefore improve fuel economy and emissions, modern motorcycle stands are made of alloys or lightweight aluminium.

They are too flimsy and simply not up to the job of supporting a big bike.

Broken Multistrada side stands sidestandBroken Multistrada side stand

Welding issues

Welding issues seem to a recurring issue in side stand recalls.

Perhaps that’s because they are trying to weld lighter alloys and aluminium that simply don’t bond as strongly as steel.

We have complained before about the lack of centre stands on many modern touring bikes.

Honda CX500 with standard vinyl seat1980s Honda CX500 had a chunky steel centre stand

But what about decent side stands?

Two years ago we also complained about cheap parts being used on expensive motorcycles and included alloy and aluminium side stands.

Light parts are not only being used to meet emission and fuel economy targets but also to keep costs down.

However, it’s a false economy when they have to pay for the part to be fixed or replaced in a vehicle safety recall.

Triumph recalls Thruxtons over side stand

A spokesman for the Australian distributor, Peter Stevens Importers, confirmed in late January that Australian bikes were affected.

They said customers were being contacted “as information comes to hand”.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has only now posted the official notice with the 804 VINs of affected Thruxtons (attached at the end of this article).

Triumph Thruxton and Rocket TFCThruxton TFC

The sidestand recall apparently affects 2016-2018 Thruxtons, 2016-2019 Thruxton R, and 2020 Thruxton TFC models.

It seems the spring may vibrate through resonance, weakening it and causing it to break.

If this happens, it could allow the side stand switch to activate and shut off the engine.

The replacement spring sits inside a rubber sleeve, preventing the resonance.

Owners should contact an authorised Triumph Dealer for a replacement spring to be fitted free of charge.

Bonneville recalls

The “Bonneville” range has been the subject of several embarrassing recalls since they were introduced in 2016:

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

Ducati Multistrada S recall on side stand

Australia has joined a global recall on 2018 Ducati Multistrada S models over an issue with the side stand breaking due to an “improper manufacturing process”.

The official notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the bike may fall when parked, “increasing the risk of injury to the rider and passenger, or bystanders”.

Importers NF Imports will notify owners in writing to contact their closest Ducati dealer or service agent and arrange an appointment for the side stand to be replaced, free of charge.

For further information, consumers can contact an authorised Ducati dealer or email [email protected]

VINS of affected bikes

The recall only affects these six motorcycles:

ZDMAC00AAJB002363

ZDMAC00AAJB002364

ZDMAC00AAJB002365

ZDMAC00AAJB002366

ZDMAC00AAJB002367

ZDMAC00AAJB002368

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Triumph recalls Thruxton and Speed Twin

A spokesman for the Australian distributor, Peter Stevens Importers, confirms “Australian bikes are affected and customers are being contacted as information comes to hand”.

If an official notice is posted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission with VINs , we will update this article so you can check your VIN to see if it is affected.

Thruxton recall

Triumph Thruxton and Rocket TFCThruxton TFC

The sidestand recall apparently affects 2016-2018 Thruxton, 2016-2019 Thruxton R, and 2020 Thruxton TFC models.

It seems the spring may vibrate through resonance, weakening it and causing it to break.

If this happens, it could allow the side stand switch to activate and shut off the engine.

The replacement spring sits inside a rubber sleeve, preventing the resonance.

Speed Twin recall

Triumph Speed Twin a poor-man's ThruxtonSpeed Twin

Affected 2019-2020 Speed Twin models may develop a loose ball joint in the gearshift lever linkage thanks to contaminated thread locking compound.

This could result in excessive movement at the end of the shift lever and riders will find gear shifts more difficult or even impossible.

Triumph can fix this issue by simply applying a new thread locking compound to the existing components.

This follows a Speed Twin recall last year for leaking coolant.

Owners of the above motorcycles should ask to schedule an inspection with an authorised Triumph Dealer “as soon as possible”. If it needs a fix, it will be free of charge.

Bonneville recalls

The “Bonneville” range has been the subject of several recalls since they were introduced in 2016:

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Big drop in 2019 motorcycle recalls

There was a big drop in the number of safety recalls for motorcycles in 2019.

In fact, with 27 motorcycle recalls, it was the lowest number in seven years.

That compares with last year’s 37 motorcycle recalls, the second highest number of recalls in the previous 10 years: 28 in 2017, 39 in 2016, 30 in 2015, 28 in 2014, 20 in 2013, 24 in 2012, 16 in 2011, 14 in 2010 and 23 in 2009.

Good drop

That drop in recalls is good news and shows that manufacturers must be taking a bit more care to test their product before rushing a new model to market. Mind you, it’s still 27 too many. In fact, even one may be too many if it affects your bike.

However, there were also four recalls for motorcycle-related products and accessories: Harley saddlebags, a Honda Monkey bike rack, an O’Neal helmet and Avon Cobra tyres. That’s unusual, as there is usually only about one motorcycle-related product a year except 2013 which had eight.

Avon Cobra 50R16 Motorcycle Tyres

The most motorcycle recalls this year was six for Yamaha; followed by four for BMW, Ducati and Triumph; Suzuki and Triumph on three; two for Harley, Honda and Indian; and one each for Kawasaki, Piaggio and KTM.

That compares with the previous year where Ducati had 6;  Indian, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM and Triumph 3; BMW, Harley, Husqvarna and Moto Guzzi 2, Aprilia and MV Augusta one each. There were no other product recalls.

Most recalls are issued voluntarily and posted online by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Major Indian recall on engine stall issue

The engine in most new models of Indian, including the new FTR 1200, could suddenly stall due to a defect in the 10 amp circuit breakers.

Indian Motorcycle has issued a voluntary recall on 465 motorcycles through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

It says the defective circuit breaker “may cause the engine to unexpectedly stop running, increasing the risk of an accident and/or injury”.

Owners will be contacted by mail to bring their bike to an authorised dealer for a free repair.

Affected bikes are:

Stall follows gear recall

It follows another major recall on all big Indian cruisers and baggers from 2014-19 over a problem with the gear position indicator.

This engine stall recall is only the second for Indian Motorcycle this year.

It brings the number of motorcycle recalls in 2019 to 27 plus four other motorcycle products: Harley saddlebags, a Honda Monkey bike rack, an O’Neal helmet and Avon Cobra tyres.

The most recalls this year was six for Yamaha; followed by 4 for BMW, Ducati and Triumph; Harley, Honda, Suzuki and Triumph on three (if you count the aftermarket accessories for Harley and Honda); two for Indian and one each for Kawasaki, Piaggio, KTM and O’Neal helmets.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Avon Cobra motorcycle tyres recalled

Photograph of DOT image

Owners should contact the dealer where they bought the tyres to arrange a free inspection and replacement of affected tyres.

Recall rush

This is the fifth motorcycle-related product recall in the past 10 days.

The others involved Triumph Speed Triple S and R models, O’Neal helmets, Ducati Hypermotards and Harley trikes.

So far this year, there have been 26 motorcycle recalls plus four motorcycle product recalls: Harley saddlebags, a Honda Monkey bike rack, the helmet and these tyres.

The most recalls this year was six for Yamaha; followed by 4 for BMW, Ducati and Triumph; Harley, Honda, Suzuki and Triumph on three (if you count the aftermarket accessories for Harley and Honda); and one each for Avon tyres, Kawasaki, Indian, Piaggio, KTM and O’Neal helmets.

Ducati recalls Hypermotard over engine cutout

A broken battery cable could cause a sudden engine cutout in 2019/20 Ducati Hypermotard models, promoting a safety recall.

Ducati Australia has issued a safety recall through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for 34 Hypermotard 950 and 40 Hypermotard 950 SP models.

The vehicle identification numbers of the affected bikes are listed at the end of this article.

The official ACCC notice says:

Due to improper assembly, the battery’s negative cable terminal may break. If the battery’s negative cable terminal breaks, the engine may cut off while riding, increasing the risk of injury to the rider and passenger(s), and other road users.

Owners will be sent a letter asking them to contact their Ducati dealer or service agent “as soon as possible” to make an appointment for an inspection, free of charge.

2019 recalls

This is the fourth recall in 2019 for Ducati following an issue with faulty gearshifts in Monster and Super Sport models, and fuel fires and oil leaks in various Panigale V4 models.

With just a few weeks to go in 2019, there have been 25 recalls of motorcycles plus two accessories (Harley bags and a Honda Monkey bike rack).
