bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup contenders Angus Grenfell and Cormac Buchanan have been nominated to be fast-tracked through to the 2020 Red Bull Rookies Cup selection event.

The pair’s nomination is a big tick for the Oceania Junior Cup, which was introduced this year as a road race academy for aspiring road riders from Australia and New Zealand. The pathway program has the support of MotoGP promoter, Dorna, under the Road to MotoGP program, and the FIM through FIM Oceania.

Currently in its 13th season, the Red Bull Rookies Cup has a proven reputation for producing elite talent, with graduates collecting six world championships and 95 GP wins, while 30 alumni are now competing in professional categories from Moto3 to MotoGP.

“I’m really excited about this fantastic opportunity and I can’t thank the OJC series enough for putting my name forward to go to the Red Bull Rookies selection event, and for the series for accepting me,” said Grenfell, who sits in second place in this year’s OJC Championship fight.

“Obviously, I want to get into the 2020 Red Bull Rookies series, but the main thing is I want to get some riding experience and simply see what it’s like to ride in Europe and what the European riders are like as well.”

Buchanan, a New Zealander, couldn’t contain his excitement ahead of a huge step in burgeoning career: “It’s a really big honour, as only two people get selected from the Oceania Junior Cup. It’s great that Angus and I will be representing OJC and, for me personally, representing New Zealand.

“Not a lot of riders from New Zealand have gone over to do the Red Bull Rookies selection event in the past. So, it’s a real focus for me to represent strongly, and I’m proud to fly the Kiwi flag.”

The selection event will take place at a European circuit later this year, with a venue and date still to be confirmed.

Dovizioso not reliant on strong Ducati form at the Red Bull Ring

Dovizioso not reliant on strong Ducati form at the Red Bull Ring

Factory Ducati pilot acknowledges Marquez threat at Austrian venue.

Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso isn’t relying on the Italian manufacturer’s dominance at the Red Bull Ring since the venue returned to the MotoGP calendar in 2016 as the Austrian grand prix looms this weekend.

While acknowledging Ducati’s success at the circuit, Dovizioso understands its stranglehold at the venue could be upset by a dominant Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), who actually defeated the Italian ace in 2018.

“We can’t deny that the Red Bull Ring is an excellent track for us, this is clear from the results achieved there in the last few years, but as I’m always saying, each race has its own story to tell,” Dovizioso explained.

“Last year Marquez finished ahead of me, so I’m sure that this year he will again be competitive. The most important thing is to focus on ourselves and maintain the feeling we found at Brno, both during the weekend and during the test, which was very positive. We’re going to try everything we can again, and for sure we’re not going to give up.”

Dovizioso sits second in the championship rankings, 63 points behind defending champion and points leader Marquez.

Dobson receives MX Nationals top privateer award

Wills takes out top privateer honours in MX2 category.

Husqvarna-mounted contender Jesse Dobson was awarded the Andrew McFarlane Top Privateer award at Coolum’s Pirelli MX Nationals finale last weekend, while Dylan Wills received the Jono Porter Top Privateer accolade in the MX2 category.

Dobson was strong challenger all season long, making Superpole on numerous occasions while being a regular inside the top five. A pair of solid P5 moto scores at Coolum’s 10th round on Sunday ultimately saw him seal eighth in the championship standings.

“In the end, I’m really happy with the pace I had all weekend, and although I believe I had the potential to finish the season with a better result, I’m happy to have been consistent with two fifth places on Sunday,” Dobson explained.

“It’s an honour getting the Andrew Mcfarlane Top Privateer award, it’s been a tough year and I can’t thank everyone enough that has helped me and supported me along the way.”

Davey Motorsports KTM’s Wills wound up sixth in the MX2 standings, scoring a podium finish at Moree’s eighth round of the series.

KTM factory visit adds ‘motivation’ for Zarco ahead of Austrian GP

Home grand prix for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing this weekend.

A visit to KTM’s factory in Austria has provided ‘extra motivation’ for Johann Zarco ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s home grand prix this weekend at the Red Bull Ring.

Zarco scored his first front row start aboard the KTM at Brno last Sunday, however he was unable to convert the qualifying time into a strong race result, ultimately crossing the line in P14.

The Frenchman has so far experienced a difficult campaign in his maiden season with the Austrian manufacturer, and he’s hoping to turn his fortunes around with the support of the factory at its home round.

“I’m feeling happy at the moment, it’s always nice to come here to the factory,” Zarco explained. “As a rider and loving the mechanical side of it, it’s always nice.

“And it gives you some extra motivation, because when you see this place and everyone working here, you feel maybe it’s possible to do even better. So I’m feeling good and I cross my fingers we’ll have a good weekend.”

Zarco is currently ranked 17th in the championship standings, while his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Pol Espargaro is situated 10th in the points rankings.

Red Bull Romaniacs Extreme Off-Road Enduro In Photos 2019

“I’m over the moon right now, I really can’t believe it,” said Lettenbichler after all was said and done. “This race is really something special, and to win here feels amazing. The event is so long and so hard and anything can happen, so I’m so pumped to take the win. It’s been an incredible five days and so gnarly, especially with all the rain we’ve had. Some of the uphills that would have been tricky anyway have become near impossible today. It’s 10 years since my dad won Red Bull Romaniacs so it’s great to be able to match his achievement—the Lettenbichlers are definitely going to celebrate tonight!”

Lawrence Pro Motocross debut set for Unadilla this weekend

Younger brother to Hunter set for Pro Motocross appearance at round 10.

Image: Supplied.

Australian teenager Jett Lawrence, younger brother to Hunter, will make his Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross debut this weekend at Unadilla after coming off a strong campaign at Loretta Lynns’ 2019 AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship.

Lawrence turns 16 today, making him eligible to race in the pro ranks under a new ruling that allows amateur racers to contest up to three Pro Motocross rounds or score a total of 40 points while remaining as an amateur.

The Amsoil Factory Connection Honda rider came heartbreakingly close to capturing a title at Loretta’s last week, his hopes crushed in the 250 Pro Sport division when he suffered a mechanical malfunction, while in Open Pro Sport, he finished just shy of the top spot in second.

“I’m just ready for Unadilla,” Lawrence said in an interview with RacerX. “I can’t say what I can do – I was coming here thinking I was going to get a fifth place first moto – so I can’t say what I get now. I just have to see what comes to me, and if I get a good start, I get a good start. If I don’t, I don’t. I just have to ride 100 percent. I might not even qualify. I’m not sure!

“So basically we have all the papers filled out and all that stuff, so Wednesday we have to send the papers out so we can get signed up and that stuff. I wanted to do more the sand ones, like Southwick, RedBud, they’re more my style, but we have to wait until I’m 16 then to sign up.”

Jett’s older brother Hunter is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury, delaying the pair racing together at a pro level.
