Ewan McGregor keeps bikes in divorce

Bike fan, Hollywood actor and “Long Way” collaborator Ewan McGregor gets to keep most of his impressive collection of motorcycles in his divorce settlement with former wife Eve Mavrakis.

The pair were married for 22 years and even though Eve did not sign a prenuptial agreement, she gets to keep half of his assets up to 2017 when they split.

Eve joined Ewan for several days on his 2007 Long Way Down adventure in Africa with partner Charley Boorman.

While his marriage wth Eve soured, his friendship with Charley has persisted and last year they joined for their third Long Way instalment, Long Way Up.

It consists of riding electric Harley-Davidson LiveWire motorcycles from the bottom of South America to LA.

The Long Way Up TV series screens on Apple TV+ from 18 September 2020.

Divorce split

In the divorce settlement, Ewan will get to keep 30 vehicles from his extensive collection which also includes some cars as well as bikes. Eve gets five vehicles.

It is not known which bikes he will keep.

However, among his collection are the BMW R 11250 GS he rode around the world in 2004 for Long Way Round, the R 1200 GS from Long Way Down and the LiveWire from last year’s trip.

Ewan has had a long affection for Moto Guzzi as his father owned one.

He is now an ambassador for the brand and owns a V7 Sport, a 2002 V11 Sport, a 1974 Eldorado Police Bike, a 2002 V11 Le Mans Tenni.

He also owns a Honda Gold Wing and a Ducati SuperSport.

Ewan must have known the marriage was ending because in early 2017, the Star Wars actor sold his 2012 “Indian Larry” Panhead Chopper at a Bonhams auction in Las Vegas for $US25,300 (about $A35,390).

According toTMZ, the couple will equally divide possessions and earnings up to 2017.

So Eve gets a $6.62 million LA house, her jewellery, and $500,000 in cash.  They share custody of their nine-year-old daughter.

Loretta Lynn’s Pro Motocross opener belongs to Osborne

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne took a first-career 450MX overall as Dylan Ferrandis dominated 250MX today at Loretta Lynn’s 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship opener.

The opening premier class moto was controlled by Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) as he stormed to the front on lap one and delivered a 4.895s win.

Anderson led factory Husqvarna teammate Osborne, who pressed through the field from the back of the top 10 into the runner-up position. A hard-charging Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) came from even further back to third, with Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) fourth and teammate Cooper Webb fifth after circulating as high as second.

The first appearance of Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) resulted in P6, passing teammate Eli Tomac in the latter stages, as Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain WPS KTM), Joey Savatgy (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) and now privateer Benny Bloss (Husqvarna) were the top 10.

The holeshot belonged to Fredrik Noren (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) alongside Savatgy, while another to put on an early attack was top qualifier Chase Sexton (Team Honda HRC), but he made an error while battling for the podium and wound up 13th.

Winning the second moto this afternoon at the ranch saw Osborne earn his first 450MX victory, overcoming a late challenge from Tomac to cross the line 3.605s ahead of the number one plate-holder and Sexton was third.

It was initially Cianciarulo who led the way only to crash out of contention with bike damage, handing Osborne the lead and that’s where he stayed.

Behind the top three came Baggett and Musquin, while opening race victor Anderson was among the top three early, only to gradually slide down the order later in the race to sixth.

Barcia recovered from an early fall for eighth ahead of Webb, Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Max Anstie (HEP Motorsports Suzuki). Overall via a 2-1 score, Osborne stood in the middle of the podium ahead of Anderson and Tomac.

In 250MX, Ferrandis captured the first moto victory of the season with a commanding ride, hitting the front on lap one and then inching away from the field to a 19.802s advantage by the checkered flag.

He was followed by Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) in second, with RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) enjoying a strong return to racing in third, while the fast-starting Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Yamaha) crossed the line fourth and Alex Martin stormed to a top five.

Geico Honda’s Jett Lawrence was able to salvage sixth following a fall mid-moto, followed by Derek Drake (TLD Red Bull KTM), Mason Gonzales (Rock River Yamaha), Cameron McAdoo (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Yamaha), who had scored the hole-shot.

Elsewhere, Hunter Lawrence (Geico Honda) went out on the opening back with a mechanical, while Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki replacement Mitchell Harrison had been inside the top five until he stalled and couldn’t restart, dropping down the order to 23rd.

Another win in moto two for Ferrandis sealed him the overall and early points-lead in the season, with the top three being the same as the opening outing as Hampshire was second, 13.199s in arrears and this time getting the better of Jeremy Martin in third.

In fact, the entire top five was identical, with early leader McElrath fourth and Alex Martin a solid fifth. Sixth was an improvement for McAdoo this time out, trailed by Jett Lawrence, Cooper, Harrison and Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM).

Ferrandis was sixth at the end of the opening lap, climbed into the top three by lap four and led from lap seven, going on to dominate for the second race in a row this afternoon. Overall it was Ferrandis atop the podium, joined by Hampshire and Jeremy Martin.

Jett Lawrence’s 6-7 scores resulted in sixth overall to begin his first full season outdoors, while brother Hunter Lawrence rebounded for 14th in moto two, putting him 17th for the weekend following that non-finish in the opening encounter.

The 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will continue with round two of nine scheduled next Saturday, 22 August, once again at Loretta Lynn’s.

Vinales takes pole in Austria after late challenge from Jack Miller

Vinales takes pole in Austria after late challenge from Jack Miller

Aussie Remy Gardner stuns with Moto2 pole

Vinales takes pole from Miller in AustriaAfter a lacklustre performance in Friday practice Monster Energy Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales has surged to pole position at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix of Austria, but admitted in his post qualifying press conference that a podium finish is the most realistic goal.

Vinales survived a late challenge from Aussie Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) with the leading times being set within the final minute of qualifying. Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) will complete the front row.

Lining up at the head of the second row is Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), who only minutes earlier had sensationally announced he will be parting ways with the factory Ducati outfit at the end of the 2020 season. Dovi went fastest with one minute remaining but was then picked off by both Vinales and Miller.

The Ducati pair will have history on their side as the Italian manufacturer has won every race at the Red Bull Ring since it’s return to the MotoGP calendar in 2016.

After topping Friday practice and Q4, Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) couldn’t repeat that form in Q2 and will line up in fifth position, while Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) completes the second row.

After taking his maiden podium at Brno last week, Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT)  will start Sunday’s race from the head of the third row, beside the second Suzuki of Alex Rins. Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing) will complete the third row with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Indemitsu) rounding out the top ten. In what was an incredibly tight qualifying, the first four rows were covered by a mere half a second.

In Moto2, Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) has made a stunning return to form to seal his second pole position in the category and steal the all-time Moto2 lap record at the Red Bull Ring in the process. The Australian will be joined on the front row by Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Marcel Schrotter (Liqui Moly Intact GP).

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Raul Fernandez backed up his pole position at Brno last week with another P1, pipping championship leader Albert Arenas (Valresa Aspar Team) in the final seconds of the session. John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) completes the front row.

Ducati and Dovizioso set to part ways following 2020 season

Ducati and Dovizioso set to part ways following 2020 season

Decision made by Italian prior to Saturday qualifying at Red Bull Ring.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso is set to depart the factory Ducati Team at the conclusion of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, it has been revealed on Saturday at Red Bull Ring.

The pair have been unable to agree to terms on a contract from 2021 and Ducati Team manager Davide Tardozzi indicated yesterday that a decision would be made following the Austrian double-header.

However, Dovizioso’s manager Simone Batistella suggested this afternoon on Sky Italy that it has in fact been decided that the 34-year-old will not remain at Ducati next season.

With options limited, a sabbatical could be on the cards for Dovizioso, save for a potential factory deal with Aprilia as it awaits the fate of Andrea Iannone. It’s understood that he intends to continue in the premier class.

“We have communicated to Ducati that Andrea has no intention of continuing for the next few years, that he now wants to concentrate on the next races, but that there are no conditions to continue together,” announced Batistella.

The news was then confirmed by Ducati sporting director Paulo Ciabatti: “We met Simone this morning here at Red Bull Ring and realised that unfortunately there are not the conditions to continue our relationship with Dovi beyond the end of the current contract.

“Ducati and Andrea will now fully concentrate on the remainder of the 2020 season, starting from tomorrow’s Austrian GP, with the common goal to add more wins to the 13 first places already achieved together and fight for the title until the end of the championship.”

With Australian Jack Miller already signed to the factory team for next year, he could be joined by current Pramac Racing teammate Francesco Bagnaia, unless triple MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo – a race winner with Ducati in 2018 – opts to come out of retirement and a deal can be struck.

There is also the possibility that Johann Zarco, fresh from claiming pole position and a podium with Esponsorama Racing aboard a GP19 at Brno last weekend, could be elevated directly into the official team in place of Dovizioso. Danilo Petrucci has already signed with KTM for 2021.

Dovizioso joined Ducati in 2013 and has finished runner-up in the standings behind Marc Marquez for the past three seasons, including 2017, 2018 and 2019. He also previously took third in the championship during 2011 with Honda.

KTM’s Espargaro tops Friday practice at Austrian MotoGP

KTM’s Espargaro tops Friday practice at Austrian MotoGP

Australia’s Miller eighth overall after topping damp second practice session.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro put the disappointment of Brno behind him to be fastest in a rain-affected Friday practice at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix of Austria.

Espargaro led most of the dry FP1 and posted a 1m56.502s, putting him just 0.044s ahead of two-time Red Bull Ring winner Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team).

In the continued absence of Marc Marquez, Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) led the Honda charge and rounded out the top three. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) showed strong pace to finish fourth in the session, with all riders posting their fastest times in FP1.

Fifth place, and crucially, the first Yamaha, was Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) which made it five different manufacturers in the top five. Behind him in sixth was the first Ducati satellite rider Johan Zarco (Esponsorama Racing) with Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) in seventh.

Australian Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) put his Ducati in eighth, but also had the distinction of setting the fastest time in FP2 on a drying track. Lap times were several seconds slower in the second session, so FP1 results will take on extra importance with rain predicted for FP3 tomorrow and possibly the race on Sunday.

Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) were ninth and 10th respectively. Most riders were able to go out on slicks in the second session but the track had not dried enough for an attack on times.

Other big names outside the top 10 that will have to work hard to make the cut for Q1 include the factory Yamaha pair of Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP). They sit 11th and 13th with the second factory Ducati of Danilo Petrucci in between them in 12th.

The Red Bull Ring at Spielberg is one of the fastest circuits on the MotoGP calendar and also the home race for the KTM team, but Brno victor Brad Binder could only manage 16th place and will also be hoping for dry conditions tomorrow.

In Moto 2, Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) topped both sessions despite late challenges, recording his fastest time of 1m28.955s lap in FP2. Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) also bettered his FP1 result, sitting just 0.010s behind Lowes with Marco Bezzecchi (Sky Racing Team VR46) in third. Aussie Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) had a return to form and finished seventh on combined times.

Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) topped the combined Moto3 times courtesy of a 1m36.550s lap in FP1, with John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) second as most of the field set their fastest time in the morning session. Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) completed the top three, while current championship leader Albert Arenas (Valresa Aspar Team) finished back in ninth.

In early May, he paid $US2.1 million for 97,850 Harley-Davidson shares at an average per-share price of $21.26.

These are the first purchases of company shares by a Harley-Davidson insider since 2017.

Three MotoAmerica Superbike Races Slated For Indy And Laguna Seca

MotoAmerica is making up for COTA being canceled this year.

Begin press release:

MotoAmerica has announced that it is replacing the two HONOS Superbike races that were lost due to the cancellation of the Circuit of the Americas round with additional Superbike races at the Superbikes At The Brickyard and GEICO Superbike Speedfest At Monterey events.

The final two rounds of the series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, October 9-11, and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, October 23-25, will feature three Superbike races – one on Saturday and two on Sunday – with the support class program remaining the same with Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Supersport, Twins Cup and Stock 1000 classes running as normal.

“It’s important to us, our teams, our riders and our fans to run a 20-race MotoAmerica Superbike Championship,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “With COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of the COTA round, we believe that adding an additional HONOS Superbike race to the Indy and Laguna rounds is the best way to get the 20 races scheduled. If you think two Superbike races are exciting, then imagine what three will be like. Especially since the extra races will be in the final two rounds of the season and there could be championship implications and 75 points per round on the table.”

Next up for the 2020 MotoAmerica Series is its first foray into the Pacific Northwest with round five scheduled for the Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington, August 28-30.

Washougal cancelled as Loretta’s adds second Pro Motocross round

Washougal cancelled as Loretta’s adds second Pro Motocross round

Opening two rounds of 2020 season to be staged in Tennessee.

Image: Supplied.

MX Sports Pro Racing has announced the cancellation of the Washougal National, with Loretta Lynn’s instead scheduled to hold the opening two rounds of 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross.

The decision was made following a meeting between the Race Leadership Team (RLT) and the series OEM partners.

The Washougal National had been previously approved at both the local and state level in Washington, based on the COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan that had been submitted by the organisers several months ago to the necessary regulatory agencies.

Continuing approval of the event had been reiterated from Clark County, within which Washougal MX Park is located, as recently as this morning, however, based on newly-imposed restrictions within the state of Washington as it relates to COVID-19 infections, it has decided that in the best interest of participants the event will be canceled.

“The decision by the Race Leadership Team and our OEM partners to cancel the Washougal National is both unexpected and disappointing,” said Roy Janson, director of competition at MX Sports Pro Racing.

“The comprehensive Health and Safety Plan, prepared specifically to address COVID-19 issues and related prevention and mitigation efforts, submitted and approved both at the local and state level, provided extensive directives designed to address every concern raised by these officials.

“The Health and Safety Plan, which is based on state policies currently in place under orders by the governor, is fully compliant with all CDC, state and county health department guidelines, and provided for pre-admission screening of all pro athletes and their crew members, including non-contact temperature testing prior to being allowed to access the venue.

“Ryan Huffman, the event organiser of the Washougal National, did everything within his power to organize a safe event for both professional and amateur competitors. We commend him for the extensive efforts and sacrifices made to make the 2020 Washougal National a reality.

“Unfortunately, as we have become increasingly aware, circumstances surrounding the spread of COVID-19 can change dramatically in a matter of hours. We did not reach this decision lightly and the circumstances are entirely out of Ryan’s control.

“We look forward to bringing the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship back to Washougal for the 2021 season. In the meantime, out of convenience to our teams and competitors, the logical decision was to return to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in one week’s time.”

Tickets for round two at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch will go on sale tomorrow and will remain limited to 5000 spectators. It will be a single-day event featuring professional racing only, with no amateur support competition.
