Yamalube Yamaha Racing retains Wilson and Rogers for 2021

Unchanged roster announced for Queensland-based factory team.

Yamalube Yamaha Racing has re-signed both Jay Wilson and Levi Rogers for the 2021 ProMX and Australian Supercross championships, retaining an unchanged roster for next season.

Multiple Australian champion Wilson will be joined by Rogers in the MX2 category for the new season, each representing the factory Yamaha team operated internally by Scott Bishop.

“My goals heading into 2020 were to have a dominant year on the 250 and move to the 450 class for 2021, but with the year the racing world has had, I have just pushed everything back a season,” Wilson explained “My motivation is as strong as it’s ever been and I think I have yet to hit my peak as a rider in terms of both speed and fitness.

“I have found a real interest in off-bike training, which I didn’t always have, and with Levi and Kota [Toriyabe] around last year, they were a good motivational tool for me as both of them are so enthusiastic about riding and racing, that it naturally rubs of on me. I feel fresh and ready to go and as always we have a great team that’s willing to do what it takes to get success. The goal is to win and that’s what we are out to do.”

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Rogers will move directly into the professional ranks after initially planning to enter MXD this year, that opportunity halted by the pandemic. Now, he’s set his sights on a successful rookie campaign after gaining experience at a state level this year.

“Although we didn’t do any national racing in 2020, I was able to get some state-based racing in where I was able to line-up against a lot of the national MX2 riders at several events and experience how things roll,” said Rogers. “I battled with them at a few of the tracks that were on the national calendar over the last few years so it was a confidence boost that I wasn’t too far from them and I could learn from first hand racing experience.

“I took on what I needed to improve on, found areas that I was strong in and think that experience has assisted my in preparation for 2021. I’m willing to do the work and looking forward to taking as many things in from Jay and establishing myself as a solid MX2 competitor.”

Yamalube, GYTR, Yamaha Motor Insurance, Yamaha Motor Finance, bLU cRU will be at the forefront of the program, combined with the use of brands like Scott, Just1, Dunlop, DID, NGK and JT Sprockets from Ficeda Accessories.

Pandemic drives down motorcycle theft

The biggest decrease in motor vehicle theft in Australia during the pandemic was in motorcycles.

While national vehicle theft was down 7% in the 12 months to the end of September – the lowest since 2017 — the largest reduction was in motorcycles.

Bike thefts were down 11% to 8667 which was only 1% up on four years ago, say the official National Motor Vehicle Theft Council figures.

This is due to the COVID lockdown and riders being unable to ride their bikes, so they have been locked away in garages.

However, the council warns that the trend may now be reversing as states open up after COVID restrictions since September.

The council is warning all motorists to keep their vehicles locked and secured as well as their keys, as most vehicle theft is as a result of homes being broken into and keys stolen.

The Council also points out that there is a correlation between the performance of the economy and crime.

They tip that with the recession caused by the pandemic it is “almost certain the current uplift in vehicle crime will extend into 2021 at a minimum”.

Motorcycle thefts had been trending up with a 10.% increase to 9672 in the 2019 calendar year. In fact, that was the biggest increase of any category of vehicle.

Bimota KB4 In Testing

1 of 20 Never Looked Better

The long-awaited Bimota KB4 has reached official testing status and is on track for its official release scheduled for April of 2021.

The Bimota KB4 is a small production superbike built around the Kawasaki 1043cc inline-four engine derived from the Ninja 1000. This motorcycle has had a lot of chatter surrounding it, and luckily – thanks to Bimota’s recent posts – we can see the motorcycle in all its testing glory; confirming that it is indeed on schedule for its big release.

In the last few months, Bimota has been posting tons of clips from testing their KB4 and Tesi H2. This recent video show’s the vintage-racer-styled KB4 coming to a complete stop using the front brake with arms containing accelerometer sensors protruding from the sides of the vehicle (to record data for further inspection). The rider puts the motorcycle into a full front-wheel stoppie on wet roads (dangerous), but the stopping power seems ample and the computer ABS system appears to be doing its job.

Although this is a short clip, we’re pleased to see the KB4 is motion, and more importantly, hear that Kawasaki engine scream. We get a quick glimpse to hear the Ninja 1000 engine rev up, and I can tell you right now this bike probably has a much more intricate exhaust system than what you would find on Kawasaki’s Ninja 1000.

The best part about this motorcycle in my opinion is the fact that Bimota set out to cram a 1000cc+ engine into what they describe as a “600cc frame/formfactor”; meaning small bike, big power. The combination of power and agility in this bike will make it a track monster, and the vintage racer styling shows that in just its visual presence.

The motorcycle will be limited to 20 units for the UK market when the official scheduled release for April rolls around. Originally the bike was scheduled for a March release, but something seems to have changed up their plans and now sources are stating that we’re looking at a release at some point in April.

Fatal crashes ‘prove wire rope barriers unsafe’

Two recent fatal crashes in Australia prove that wire rope barriers (WRBs) are not only a danger to motorcyclists, but also other motorists, says a long-time campaigner against the structures.

Damien Codognotto says a fatal motorcycle crash in Perth during last weekend’s Christmas Toy Run and an SUV double fatal southwest of Brisbane last month could have been affected by WRBs.

He says the female rider died after hitting a WRB that appeared to fence off a run-off area.

“In my opinion, road authorities know how deadly WRB is and they know run-off areas save lives,” Damien says.

In the 4WD crash, the car was slung across the road on a causeway and into another wire rope barrier which failed to stop the car from plunging into Wyaralong Dam, drowning two children.

“If the Wyaralong Dam causeway had had properly anchored smooth concrete barriers instead of wire rope barriers, the children may have survived,” Damien says.

WRBs have long been viewed as dangerous to motorcyclists and now Norway and Ireland have reversed their policy.

A recent Victorian Auditor General’s report has also slammed claims about the safety and cost effectiveness of wire rope barriers.

The auditor’s report found there was no evidence to support the claimed safety benefits for motorcyclists and scooter riders.

Damien says that if road authorities ad relevant ministers are not aware of the safety shortcomings of WRBs, “they should not be in their taxpayer-funded jobs”.

“Again, in my opinion, the CEO of the road authority and the Minister responsible for the road authority are guilty of manslaughter when someone dies on a WRB,” he says.

De also points out that police rarely identify barrier types in crash reports “so there is no way of knowing the real wire rope barrier toll”.

FOR SALE: 1946 Norton Model 18

A Piece of History In the Making

Norton has made a big splash into the motorcycle world with their resurgence and ‘rise from the dead’ after the 120+ year-old company went out of business for what seemed like decades. The company relaunched twelve years ago and has already run into numerous issues during the production of their upcoming models. If you looked at the company’s woes now, it would be hard to gauge where they used to be; once a highly successful motorcycle brand with a decorated trophy-case full of race victories across the decades.

This 1946 Norton Model 18 is a perfect example of what you would get from a Norton motorcycle over sixty years ago. This 1946 Model 18 in specific is up for auction on bringatrailer.com with a clean Washington state title under the name of the current seller.

On the technical side, his motorcycle features an air-cooled 490cc single-cylinder engine married to a four-speed transmission for propulsion and drum brakes for when you inevitably need to come to a stop. Although the front end of the motorcycle has a girder fork for suspension, the rear end of this motorcycle leaves you with a simple sprung seat to absorb the roads harsh surfaces.

KTM 450 SX-F Factory

This Model 18 is finished in silver and chrome parts mounted to a black frame. Although this motorcycle looks straight out of 1946, the bike has undergone some changes to keep it safe and reliable with ie inclusion of newly painted fenders, updated hand controls, a transmission overhaul, a new exhaust system, and a few more updates.

The bike displays 13,000 miles, but the total mileage is unknown. If you’re eager to get your hands on a piece of Norton Motorcycle history before they begin to unravel their own future with the next lineup of bikes coming out, this Model 18 can be yours if you act fast and bid on it at bringatrailer.com. The bids currently sit at $3500 at the time of writing this article, and the auction currently has 7 days remaining until it’s finished.
