2023 Energica Experia Electric Tourer | First Look Review

Energica Experia

Energica Motor Company, the Italian electric motorcycle company that offered its first production bike in 2013, will release its model year 2023 lineup at EICMA, taking place Nov. 10-13. While we know we’ll see several returning models, the star of Energica’s 2023 lineup will be the new Experia, the company’s first zero-emissions electric green tourer.

Related Story: Energica Ego Electric Motorcycle | First Ride Review

The first generation of Energica Motor Company featured the Ego, a racing-style competition motorcycle; the Eva, a naked version of the Ego with a more comfortable seating position; and the EsseEsse9, a relaxed and classic casual rider. Over 10 years, the company upgraded and expanded these three motorcycles, adding the Ego+, Ego RS, Eva Ribelle, Eva Ribelle RS, EsseEsee9+, and EsseEsse9+ RS.

The Experia will be the first model of a new generation for Energica. As a long-distance tourer, the Experia will truly be something different than what the company has done so far. Giampiero Testoni, CTO of Energica Motor Company, said the intention behind the Experia was “to create the first electric motorcycle created specifically for long-distance bike lovers.”

Energica Experia

While electric bikes have been sprouting up all over for several years, there are obvious drawbacks, such as short ranges and a lack of charging stations. An electric tourer is an ambitious project for Energica, so we’ll see how it holds up to rider expectations.

Here’s what we know so far.

Energica Experia Motor and Battery

Electric means no shifting or clutch, no noise from the exhaust, no heat, and less vibrations, all of which can be considered advantages over internal combustion bikes. But does an electric motor offer comparable performance? We’re seeing advances all the time, and Energica’s new motor is certainly a step in the right direction.

Energica Experia

The Experia features the new PMASynRM (Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor), which is lighter weight and in a lower position than on other Energica models. Energica claims the motor’s peak power as 75 kW (101 hp) at 7,500 rpm with 85 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is stated to be 112 mph, and the bike reportedly accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The battery is also new, with the largest capacity of any Energica model so far. The capacity sits at 22.5 kWh maximum and will charge from 0-80% in 40 minutes on Level 3 chargers. This is also the first model to use Level 3 chargers, although it will also use Level 2 and 1 chargers for a longer, overnight charge.

The big question when it comes to an electric touring motorcycle has to be what kind of range the bike offers. Energica claims the Experia will get 153 miles of city/highway range combined or 261 miles in urban areas. This is a big step up from the 100 mile combined and 123 mile city range of the 2022 Ego, and the ability to use Level 3 fast charging is certainly beneficial for those seeking longer adventures.

Suspension and Brakes

In front of the Energica is the ZF Sachs suspension with 150mm travel and adjustable preload, extension, and compression. Rear suspension is also ZF Sachs with 55mm travel and 150mm of wheel travel. The Experia will feature a 330mm Brembo double floating disc for the front brake and a 240mm Brembo single disc in the back.

The Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires ride on 17-inch aluminum wheels. Seat height is 33.3 inches, and the weight of the Experia is 573 lb.

Energica Experia

Extras

The Experia will also feature electronic assists such as cruise control, six levels of traction control, and four riding modes: Eco, Urban, Rain, and Sport. There are two USB ports on the dash and two in a waterproof storage compartment, so riders should never run out of ports to plug in their devices (just be careful not to unnecessarily drain that battery).

No touring motorcycle would be complete without plenty of storage. The Launch Edition Experia comes with hard side panniers and a top case for a total of 29.5 gallons of storage.

Energica Experia

Is the Energica Experia Worth It?

It’s clear that Energica is dedicated to expanding the horizons of electric motorcycles. While some might think the range is still not quite there to make an electric touring bike worth the price, the technology is advancing every year, and the 2023 Experia is a testimony to that.

The Experia is available for preorder for $25,880 in Bormio Ice. Visit Energica’s website for more information.

2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R | First Look Review

Ducati Panigale V4 R

Ducati has announced the 2023 Panigale V4 R, a street-legal superbike that now surpasses earlier models as Ducati’s closest production model to a competition motorcycle. With technical solutions derived from MotoGP and WorldSBK Championship bikes, Ducati claims a max 240.5 hp for the updated Panigale V4 R. The 2023 V4 R also features several upgrades over the previous year model.

Read all of Rider‘s Ducati reviews here.

The maximum horsepower of 240.5 sounds impressive, but it’s a little more complicated than that. A few things have to fall into alignment for that max to be reached. The 2023 Panigale V4 features the 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R engine, seen in previous models.

Ducati claims the Desmosedici Stradale R can reach 16,500 rpm in 6th gear and deliver 207 hp at 13,500 rpm with 82 lb-ft of torque. Add on the racing exhaust, and the Stradale R bumps up to 237 hp, which is 3 hp higher than its predecessor but still 3.5 hp short of the claimed max. To give the Stradale R another boost, Ducati collaborated with Shell to produce a special performance oil that claims a 10% reduction in mechanical friction, bumping the ponies up to 240.5.

Ducati Panigale V4 R

The special Shell oil only works because the bike uses a dry clutch. The oil contains racing-type additives that can cause problems with a wet clutch. The clutch on the 2023 Panigale V4 R is new, derived from the version used in the WorldSBK. The diameter and axial length have been reduced by 0.9 in and the weight by 1.8 lb. To help with lubrication, the V4 R features gun-drilled titanium connecting rods, which facilitate oil passage.

Ducati Panigale V4 R

Also new to the 2023 model is the lengthened gear ratios. The new ratios are the same as those used by WorldSBK Panigale race bikes and were first seen in production models on the 2022 Panigale V4 S. The ratios are lengthened in 1st (+11.6%), 2nd (+5.6%), and 6th (+1.8%) gears. Ducati says the longer gears offer improved engine management when braking and better acceleration coming out of corners. They also allow the quickshifter to work more effectively.

Ducati Panigale V4 R

The V4 R also allows riders to choose from four engine configurations: full, high, medium, and low. Full power mode is exactly what it sounds like: It allows the engine to run its full potential without electronic filters (except for first gear). In medium and high power modes, a Ride by Wire map has calibration for all six gears so riders achieve ideal drive. The low power mode is intended to be used for riding on road and for low-grip surfaces. Low power mode limits the max power to 160 hp and features a more manageable throttle response.

Ducati Panigale V4 R
Ducati Panigale V4 R

The ride mode is visible on the Track Evo display, first seen on the 2022 Panigale V4. The display features a horizontal tachometer along the top of the dashboard. The gear engaged is in the center of the screen. The display also features lights to indicate when an electronic control is working on a particular parameter, such as the Engine Brake Control and the Dual Quick Shift, making it easier for the rider to figure out what controls are helping and what controls have been working against the rider in any given scenario.

Ducati Panigale V4 R

The suspension system, updated in the 2022 Panigale V4 and V4 S, is fully adjustable, with an Öhlins NPX25/30 fork with 4.9 inches of travel (0.2 inches more than the 2022 Panigale V4 R) and an Öhlins TTX36 shock. Other updates include a more aggressive profile of the intake cams to improve breathing at high revs and an aluminum tank capacity increase to 4.5 gallons.

Ducati Panigale V4 R
Ducati Panigale V4 R

Ducati offers a number of accessories for the Panigale V4, such as the Akrapovič titanium complete exhaust system, lighter magnesium rims, adjustable aluminum footpegs, and more.

The 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R in MotoGP-derived racing livery will retail for $44,995 and is expected to arrive in dealerships in the spring of 2023. Visit Ducati’s website for more information.

Can-Am and Road Warrior Foundation Sponsor Veterans on Cross-Country Ride

Can-Am
The 2022 Road Warrior Ride, sponsored by Can-Am, ended at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

During the week of Sept. 23-30, a group of veterans seeking adventure, camaraderie, and healing rode Can-Am Spyders from Florida to Ohio, covering over 1,000 miles. It was the 9th annual Road Warrior Ride, hosted by the Road Warrior Foundation and Can-Am. Selected from hundreds of applicants, these veterans were given a full set of gear and riding courses on the Spyders, all free of charge, to prepare them for the trip. Read more in Can-Am’s press release below.

Throughout this past week, Can-Am, together with the Road Warrior Foundation, hosted a group of military veterans for an epic “Adventure Therapy” ride that covered more than 1,000 miles aboard Can-Am Spyder 3-wheel vehicles. Now in its ninth year, this annual Road Warrior Ride gives veterans the opportunity to disconnect from their day-to-day life and experience the incredible healing power of riding the open road, all completely free of charge.

The veterans were selected by RWF from a pool of hundreds of applicants, and included representatives of the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps. And as is the focus of every RWF adventure, they were all young – in their 20s and 30s – with various injuries, both physical and mental. Something else they all had in common: a thirst for adventure and a desire to inject some fun in their lives. Riding is a perfect recipe for a group of likeminded strangers with so much in common.

“Can-Am has been the title sponsor of the Road Warrior Foundation since it was established, proudly enabling its mission to provide Adventure Therapy to U.S. Military veterans,” said Martin Ethier, Global Marketing Director, Can-Am 3-Wheel Vehicles and Motorcycles. “We firmly believe that the open road is open to all, and this sponsorship brings that to life with many incredibly deserving individuals.”

Prior to hitting the road, the group of riders gathered in Orlando, Fla., where they spent time getting to know each other and received a hero’s welcome from more than 250 Can-Am owners at an event put on by the riding group, U.S. Spyder Ryders. Then it was time to ride.

Can-Am
Veterans enjoying the roads and each other’s company on the Road Warrior Ride.

Several of the riders had only recently acquired their motorcycle license, and most had very little experience riding in a group, so prior to the main event, Can-Am and RWF representatives did some closed-course and classroom training on the fleet of vehicles provided by Can-Am. The brand also gave the riders a full suite of riding gear to cover the various climates they’d come across on their way from Orlando, Fla., up through some of the most iconic roads in North America, ultimately ending up at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

“The Can-Am Spyder is the only vehicle that will allow us to do what we do because it’s so easy to learn to ride,” said Stephen Berger, co-founder of the Road Warrior Foundation and U.S. Air Force veteran. “BRP provides us a fleet of vehicles that we keep all over the country, so for this ride and other smaller ones we have throughout the year, we’re able to get Veterans of all skill levels out riding fairly quickly by putting them through the Can-Am Rider Education Program. Then it’s just get on and go.”

As always, once the wheels were rolling, the excitement was undeniable from all, and throughout the ride, the veterans experienced amazing views, great food, visits to local Can-Am dealers, Can-Am Spyder group meet-ups, and lasting memories along the way. It was a ride of a lifetime, full of teambuilding and camaraderie that will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on all involved.

The Road Warrior Foundation is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that’s run by veterans, for veterans. The organization primarily utilizes powersports as Adventure Therapy to produce a challenging environment that puts wounded veterans back in the driver’s seat. The Foundation’s experiences range from quick day-trips to multi-day rides like this one, as well as off-road days and snowmobiling excursions.

LiveWire Goes Public, Now Taking S2 Del Mar Reservations

LiveWire S2 Del Mar
LiveWire S2 Del Mar in Nimbus Gray

Last month, a new business combination was approved between Harley-Davidson Inc. and AEA-Bridges Impact Corp., a special purpose acquisition company with a dedicated sustainability focus. The new public group, LiveWire Inc., became the first publicly traded EV motorcycle company in the U.S., marking the occasion by ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Sept. 27.

That same day, LiveWire announced it was opening reservations for the production version of the all-electric S2 Del Mar motorcycle, the first LiveWire model to feature the new Arrow architecture and the second to join the lineup next to the LiveWire ONE, the company’s flagship electric motorcycle.

LiveWire S2 Del Mar

Jochen Zeitz, who is chairman, president, and CEO of Harley-Davidson, as well as chairman and CEO of LiveWire, said the merging of the two companies represents a “proud and exciting milestone for LiveWire towards its ambition to become the most desirable electric motorcycle brand in the world.”

“We believe LiveWire is well positioned to define the two-wheel EV market,” Zietz said, “and we’re excited about the future.”

According to a press statement announcing the opening of reservations for the S2 Del Mar, performance highlights of the bike include expected outcomes of 80 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque, 75-minute recharge time from 20% to 80% using Level 2 charging, and 431 lb of weight, delivering projected 0-to-60 mph times of 3.1 seconds. These specs are better than those sent out in May, when the company was only saying “less than 440 pounds” for the weight and a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

The claimed city riding range of the Del Mar has also been bumped up 100 to 110 miles. The media statement reported that range estimates are based on “expected performance on a fully-charged battery and are derived from SAE J2982 Riding Range Test Procedure data on a sample motorcycle under ideal laboratory conditions.” Actual range will likely vary depending on a variety of factors, including personal riding habits, road and driving conditions, ambient weather, vehicle condition and maintenance, tire pressure, vehicle configuration (parts and accessories), and vehicle loading (cargo, rider and passenger weight).

Triumph to Compete in 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship

Triumph Racing
The new Triumph Racing banner brings together top talent for its entrance into the FIM Motocross World Championship.

On Sept. 23, Triumph Motorcycles confirmed plans to compete in the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship, organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme and divided into two distinct classes: MXGP and MX2.

Triumph also announced that the company would have a factory-supported race program under an all-new Triumph Racing banner, which will now cover all of Triumph’s racing-related activities, including Moto2 and Supersport racing. This new Triumph Racing Team represents a partnership with successful team owner Thierry Chizat-Suzzoni, who will field two of Triumph’s all-new 250cc 4-stroke MX bikes in the 2024 MX2 class and will add an entry into the 450cc MXGP class in 2025.

In addition to partnering with Chizat-Suzzoni, Triumph also announced that his long-standing team manager, Vincent Bereni, will lead the team, backed by Triumph’s in-house motocross design engineering department. Chizat-Suzzoni and Bereni’s past racing record includes more than 80 MXGP World Championship victories and a reputation for technical and preparation excellence. As a part of Triumph Racing’s portfolio of commitments, the team will focus on the FIM Motocross World Championship – in MX2 and MXGP, together with development of technology and talent to build Triumph’s future strength in international motocross racing.

See all of Rider‘s Triumph Motorcycle coverage here.

In a media statement accompanying the announcement, Triumph CEO Nick Bloor said the new partnership with Chizat-Suzzoni demonstrates the company’s “long-term commitment to competing at the highest levels of racing,” and he called Triumph’s entry into the FIM Motocross World Championship a “landmark moment.”

“We share a passion for delivering world-class performance, and the experience Thierry and his team bring will prove invaluable in our ambition to make our mark on a very competitive championship,” Bloor said.

Triumph-Racing FIM Motocross World Championship
Triumph CEO Nick Bloor and Thierry Chizat-Suzzoni mark the occasion of Triumph’s announcement of plans to compete in the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Triumph Racing is based at Triumph’s Global Headquarters in Hinckley, UK, where the brand’s research, design, engineering development, and prototype build are located, and the Motocross World Championship team will be based at Thierry’s race facility near Eindhoven in Holland, where race team personnel, operations, and competition development will be housed.

Triumph stated that engineering groups at the Triumph factory and the race team are working closely together on continuously enhancing chassis and engine performance through an intensive testing schedule underway in the U.S., UK, and mainland Europe, building toward the first MX2 Grand Prix of the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Chizat-Suzzoni stated that he was happy with progress on the bike.

“It looks great, has speed on the track, and Vincent and my staff are working with the engineers at Hinckley on building it into a competitive package,” he said. “MXGP continues to grow around the world. I am very happy to be back and looking forward to going racing with Triumph.”

David Luongo, CEO of Infront Moto Racing, which manages the exclusive television, marketing, and promotional worldwide rights of the FIM Motocross World Championship, said the announcement from Triumph was “probably one the most important in recent years,” and he supported Chizat-Suzzoni’s assertion about the popularity of MXGP.

“With an average of 19 events per year, it gives the best platform for manufacturers to develop their bikes, components and to advertise them worldwide,” he said. “From Asia to South America, going through Europe, MXGP is covering all the different markets and is touching most of the off-road fans in the world.”

While breaking into FIM Motocross is new for Triumph, Triumph engines are not new to FIM. Since the start of the 2019 season, Triumph has been the exclusive engine supplier to the FIM Moto2 World Championship, providing all teams with race-tuned 765cc triples based on the Street Triple RS. The success of the Triumph engines in Moto2 was evident by a top speed record and 11 all-time lap records. In 2021, Triumph announced that it renewed its contract as the exclusive engine supplier for FIM Moto2 for three more years.

Our guest on Episode 46 of the Rider Magazine Insider Podcast is Dave Scott, an old friend of host Greg Drevenstedt. This episode was recorded while Rider’s editorial team was in the final week of production for the November 2022 issue – our first-ever adventure-themed issue. Scott was the inspiration for the issue. In the summer of 2020, during a record-breaking hurricane season that drenched the Southeast in rain and when we were still in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, Scott took a solo journey on the TransAmerica Trail, a mostly off-road route that extends from coast to coast. He wrote a story about his adventure, and it goes well with other features in the November issue about the Trans Canada Adventure Trail, the Trans Euro Trail, and the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park. Scott has a way with words, which is why we wanted to interview him on the podcast as a companion to his story. We had a freewheeling, uncensored conversation for nearly an hour, but we only made it as far as the Mississippi River on Scott’s east-to-west journey.

Enjoy this episode, and stay tuned for a follow-up episode where we’ll hear more about riding across America on a dirtbike.
