2019 BMW R 1250 GS Adventure | More grunt | Sharp looks

While the new R 1250 GS had been revealed earlier in the year it was not until this week at EICMA that BMW took the wraps off the big daddy R 1200 GS Adventure for model year 2019.

Like the regular GS, the Adventure, as you expect, gets all the same updated mechanicals including the new ShiftCam version of the Boxer engine.

This latest powerplant also realises a hefty 7 per cent increase in capacity from 1170cc to 1254cc courtesy of both a bigger bore and longer stroke.

Power is up from 125 to 136 horsepower while torque is boosted further from 125 to 143 Nm. The rpm those peaks arrive at are unchanged for the power figure at 7750 rpm but peak torque now arrives 250 rpm earlier at 6250 rpm.

BMW claim that improvements lower in the rev range in regards to torque delivery are also notable, with 110 Nm already available as low as 2000 rpm, and the previous peak of 125 Nm already surpassed by 4000 rpm.

The accompanying dyno chart shows a momentary slight dip in torque around 5000 rpm which presumably corresponds with when the short duration and low lift cam lobe swaps over to the more aggressive longer duration and higher lift lobe.

It will be interesting to see how this transition feels on the road but BMW are claiming much improved levels of refinement and smoothness with the updated engine. The gearbox too is claimed to work better than before.

On the chassis front the new GS Adventure runs slightly less steering head angle (65.1 compared to 65.5-degrees of the previous model), a marginally shorter wheelbase (1504 compared to 1510 mm) and more castor (95.4 compared to 92.7 mm on predecessor).

The new GS Adventure is also 15 mm longer but is 28 mm slimmer between the mirrors than before, however, at 268 kg BMW’s claimed wet weight figure is 8 kg heavier than quoted for the previous machine.

Wheel travel remains 210 mm at the front and 220 mm at the rear while the latest model benefits from Dynamic ESA ‘Next Generation’ with automatic load compensation.

Rim and tyre sizes remain the same at 120/70-19 and 170/60-17, as do the brake rotor sizes of 305 mm (F) and 276 mm.

Likewise the 30-litre fuel capacity and 890-910 mm adjustable seat height remains unchanged but the low option now gets down as low as 820 mm. Presumably both the suspension and seat unit needs to be changed in order to realise that low figure, which would likely also reduce the wheel travel and ground clearance while possibly compromising suspension performance, and ruling out the fitment of ESA.

2019 Honda CBR500R | More grunt | Sharper looks

For 2019 Honda’s highly successful CBR500R gets a make-over with a fresh set of sleeker clothes along with some meaningful mechanical updates for the new model year.

The eight-valve parallel twin has altered cam timing and more lift on the valves which Honda claims translates to a 4 per cent boost in mid-range power and torque from 3000-7000 rpm.

Also new for 2019 is a slip-assist clutch which comes with the dual benefits of a lighter clutch pull combined with a slipper function on decelearation.

A repositioned battery has allowed for a straight intake tract for the PGM-FI fuel-injection system.

At the other end the exhaust system now features dual exits in the single high-rise muffler.

The clip-on bars now sit lower and the riding position is canted a little more forward, while the seat itself is a little slimmer than before but retains the low 785 mm seat height.

New LCD instrumentation adds an upshift indicator light along with a gear position indicator. The shift-light is factory set at 8,750 rpm but can be adjusted in 250 rpm increments for the boy/girl racers.

A new single-tube rear shock with larger diameter piston promises improved damping control and is nine-stage preload adjustable.  Forks are as before, 41mm, and offer 120mm of travel.

Honda claim a range of up to 480 km from the 17.1-litre fuel cell. 

As for when it arrives, it seems sometime early in 2019 is about as close a date as we can predict for now.

pays homage to iconic S America 750


The ‘America’ name holds a special place in MV Agusta’s history, as far back as the 1975 S America 750 which boasted a 75hp in-line air-cooled DOHC four-cylinder and would later make a reappearance in 2012 as the Brutale America in red, white and blue thanks to Massimo Tamburini.

The first three-cylinder Brutale America was introduced last year, and thanks to its success the CRC workshop have created the Dragster 800 RR version. This new “America” carries the iconic colour scheme on a mica blue base with horizontal graphic cuts that enhance the styling of the Dragster 800 RR.

The upper part of the fuel tank on the new Dragster 800 RR America is adorned with stars, just like on the 750 S from forty-five years ago. The saddle boasts stitching with gold highlights and different materials for the areas dedicated to the rider and the passenger. The wheels pay homage to the colours of the American flag, incorporating the colours into the hub, spokes and rim.

The glossy black finish of specific components also stands out, such as the front mudguard with the MV Agusta logo and the radiator cover. An “America Special Edition” decal is found on the instrument cluster cover along with the production number.

The MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR America will be made in a limited edition of just 200 units, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

The Dragster 800 RR underwent a complete re-design with the 2018 model year, with the addition of a LED rear light cluster, Daylight Running Lights, and the evolution of the Euro4 Brutale 800 RR derived three-cylinder engine.

Developments in recent years have further optimised combustion, electronic throttle management and performance while decreasing mechanical noise and vibrations. A revised gearbox engages the gears more quickly and it is more precise and reliable. The  EAS 2.0 “Up and Down” electronically assisted shifting is also featured as part of the electronics package that includes adjustable traction control and customisable engine maps.

Powered by the four-stroke three-cylinder DOHC engine, the MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR America has a capacity of 798cc, bore and stroke of 79 x 54.3mm and compression ratio of 13.3:1.

Power output is 140hp at 12,300rpm, with peak torque of 87Nm at 10,100rpm. The America features the latest MVICS 2.0 control system, with six injectors, two per cylinder, and an Eldor EM2.0 ECU. Throttle is full ride-by-wire by Mikuni, with four torque control maps and eight-level traction control.

The MV EAS 2.0 quickshifter joins a hydraulically actuated wet clutch, with back torque limited device, while the gearbox is a cassete style six-speed.

The ALS steel tubular trellis frame is mated to an aluminium alloy swingarm, with pivot plates of the same material, while standard suspension is 43mm Marzocchi USD forks with DLC treatment, and rebound-compression and preload adjustability. The rear shock is a progressive Sachs unit and is fully adjustable. A standard steering damper is also fitted with eight levels of adjustment.

Brakes are dual 320mm steel discs on the front, with Brembo radial four-piston calipers with 32mm pistons, while a single 220mm rear steel disc and Brembo two-piston caliper is also fited. ABS is provided by a Bosch 9+ unit with RLM.

Wheels are aluminium alloy spoked items, with a 3.50 x 17in front and 6.00 x 17in rear, taking 120/70 – 17 and 200/50 – 17 tyres.

Harley-Davidson has been working on electric motorcycles for a long time now, and MCNews.com.au had a brief ride on a LiveWire prototype in Malaysia almost four years ago. The machine had plenty of get up and go, and due to straight cut gears in the transmission system it even sounded pretty good.

Since then Harley have not only continued electric motorcycle development by themselves, but have also partnered with other companies. The most promising partnership came about early this year with Harley making an investment in cutting-edge San Francisco based electric motorcycle maker Alta. Alas, that partnership must have ended in tears as Harley exited the agreement six months later.

A now seemingly production ready Harley-Davidson LiveWire made its European debut at a press conference held at the EICMA show in Milan this week with confirmation that the LiveWire will go on sale next year in many markets. Australia and New Zealand are currently slated for a 2020 release.

Propelled by the immediate torque of an all-electric motor, Harley claim;

‘LiveWire motorcycle is capable of astounding acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or gear shifting required.’

‘A low centre of gravity, rigid aluminum frame and premium adjustable suspension components give the LiveWire dynamic handling.’

‘Performance and range are optimised for the urban street-rider.’

That last sentence suggests that it will be primarily designed as a short range commuter machine, as one would expect as we all wait for battery technology to become compact enough for a touring machine.

A colour touch screen TFT display (thin-film-transistor, a type of liquid-crystal display noted for high image quality and contrast) located above the handlebar offers the rider a wide range of information on a screen that’s bright and easy to read. The TFT screen also allows the rider to access the interface for Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, music and more.

The LiveWire motorcycle features a RESS (Rechargeable Energy Storage System, or the main battery) composed of lithium-ion cells surrounded by a finned, cast-aluminum housing. The LiveWire motorcycle is also equipped with a small 12-volt lithium-ion battery that powers the lights, controls, horn and instrument display. Charging can be completed using an on-board Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard household outlet with a power cord that stores below the motorcycle seat.

LiveWire can also be charged with a Level 2 and Level 3, or DC Fast Charge (DCFC), through a SAE J1772 connector, (USA), or CCS2 – IEC type 2 charging connector in international markets. All Harley-Davidson dealers who sell the LiveWire motorcycle will offer a public charging station.

The LiveWire’s style is just as stunning as the performance and follows a key Harley-Davidson styling dictum: the focus is on the motor. Just as the V-Twin engine is the most eye-catching element – the crown jewel – of every previous Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the electric motor is the first-look focus of the LiveWire motorcycle. Its bright case and mechanical, muscular shape is meant to convey the power it contains.

In addition, the cast-aluminum case for the RESS has been styled with functional cooling fins the bodywork, finished utilizing advanced paint technology to give the look of anodized metal, flows from a battery cover through to a high, wasp-like contoured tail section, with a rear fender that hugs the wheel so tightly that is almost disappears from sight.

KTM 790 Adventure R | 95hp | 88Nm | 189kg | June 2019

After seeing first hand the lengths that KTM have gone to in order to make the dimensions of their new 75-degree offset crank-pin 790 cc parallel twin as minimalist as possible, and then sampling how strong and linear the performance of the 435-degree firing interval engine is myself over many kilometres of fanging the 790 Duke, I am dying to see just how well this engine will translate in to the 790 Adventure, but unfortunately we are going to have to wait until its June 2019 arrival to sample it!

KTM quote 95 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 88 Nm at 6600 rpm for both 790 Adventure models.  This is 10 hp down on the 790 Duke, but the claimed 88 Nm torque is marginally higher while at 6600 rpm, that peak twist arrives 1400 rpm earlier than the 790 Duke.

The incredibly small engine packaging (only fractionally larger externally than the 375cc single in the 390 Duke), gives KTM the room to fit a long swingarm and more space for the fuel cell.

The small engine dimensions also allow for plenty of ground clearance while maintaining a reasonable seat height.

Clearance on the 790 Adventure is 233 mm while the 790 Adventure R has 263 mm of clearance.

Seat height on the Adventure is adjustable between 830 and 850 mm while the saddle on the 790 Adventure R is a taller 880 mm.

Both are also claimed to tip the scales at 189kg without their 20-litre fuel cells being topped up.

Thus we can extrapolate that the 790 Adventure weighs in at 204kg fully fuelled and ready to ride.

Again those slim and compact engine dimensions have played their part in keeping the fuel low with the tank extending down alongside the engine, similar to what we once saw in the 990 Adventure models some years ago.

KTM claim a fuel range as high as 450 km from the new bikes and while this might be possible when being nursed, realistically a rider will more likely able to count on a 350+ km range in most touring duties.

The 900cc High Torque Bonneville engine benefits from a significant upgrade in 2019, delivering 9.8hp more peak power, taking the total up to 64hp, 18% more than its predecessor.

This upgrade also brings a higher redline, up 500rpm to 7500rpm, with peak torque of 80Nm delivered low down in the rev range from just 3800rpm. Twin upswept silencers were also chosen to deliver an unmistakeable British Twin soundtrack.

To deliver the higher power and performance, the engine updates include a new magnesium cam cover, new lightweight crankshaft, dead shafts and balance shafts, new mass optimised clutch cover and new lighter clutch.

The standard ride-by-wire brings also offers optimised control from a single throttle body, while liquid-cooling delivers low emissions and fuel efficient riding. High service intervals of 10,000 miles (16,000km) also reduce the Street Twin’s cost of ownership.


Improved ergonomics & chassis

The new 2019 Street Twin also represents a step forward in handling and rider and pillion comfort, now including a new Brembo four-piston front brake caliper, for better bite and feel for greater control.

New higher spec cartridge front forks have also been added, with 120mm travel, aiming to deliver a more comfortable ride.

On top of the higher specification equipment, the Street Twin improves rider ergonomics with a more comfortable seat-to-peg riding position. A 10mm increase to the seat foam thickness also increases both rider and pillion comfort, improving longer distance rideability.

First class technology

The 2019 Street Twin boasts a host of advanced rider technology, including the new Road and Rain riding modes, which adjust the throttle map and traction control settings for the optimum riding experience in all conditions.

Traction control is also fitted and switchable via the instrument menu, optimising the delivery of the Street Twin’s torque when traction is compromised. ABS is likewise standard fitment for enhanced rider safety and control, with a torque-assist clutch bringing a lighter touch and feel to the clutch.

A longer LED rear light incorporated into the minimal tail set-up offers a distinctive rear light pattern, while an immobiliser is fitted as standard, with transponder incorporated into the key, for maximum security. Contemporary custom style

A decade after BMW’s S 1000 RR first debuted and shocked all of us with its next level engine performance as we tasted its power for the first time at Portimao, BMW have re-imagined their flagship sportsbike for model year 2019.

The headline figures for this new third-generation S 1000 RR are 207 horsepower at 13,500 rpm and a wet weight (with 16.5 litres of fuel) listed as 197 kg in base form, and as low as 193.5 kg with the M package option.

In base form the 2019 S 1000 RR is 11 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

Claimed torque is 113 Nm at 10,500 rpm and the engine itself is 4 kg lighter than the previous donk.  Maximum engine speed is rated at 14,600 rpm and BMW claim that the new engine has more grunt across the entire rev range.

With the aim of achieving a significant weight reduction, the engine in the new RR now has more of a load-bearing function than was previously the case.

The requirement in designing the new main frame, in addition to improving ergonomics, was to have the force applied directly to the engine structure via the shortest possible paths.

BMW claim that a significant increase in riding dynamics was achieved in the new RR based on the combination of the new riding geometry, optimised wheel load distribution and a substantial weight optimisation.

The steering head angle has now been set 0.4° steeper at 66.9°, with the offset of the fork bridges adjusted as necessary. The castor is reduced to 93.9 mm (previously 96.5 mm).

At the same time, the wheelbase was extended by 9 mm to 1,441 mm. The length of the new single-section rear wheel swinging arm with underslung sections is 606.6 mm.

Riding Modes

Four riding modes as standard and three more as part of the “Pro Modes” option for optimum adaptation. For ideal adaptation to varied conditions of use, the new RR is fitted with the four modes “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic” and “Race” as standard.

For those who wish to delve deeper into the world of race tracks and motor racing, the “Pro Modes” option offers an additional three riding modes (Race Pro 1-3) that are freely programmable. These enable individual adaptation of the most diverse control functions such as Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS and wheelie detection as well as the throttle curve (torque adjustment) and Engine Brake to suit the rider’s own skill level and riding style.

Other features that come with the “Pro Modes” option are Launch Control for perfect race starts and the configurable Pit Lane Limiter for exact adherence to speeds in the pit lane. New Six-Axis IMU

New 6-axis sensor cluster for an unprecedented level of electronic control quality.

The new RR is fitted with ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control DTC as standard. In addition to traction control, DTC also includes the DTC Wheelie Function as standard – available as an ex works option and now individually adjustable for the first time.

All control systems have been readjusted for regulation quality and characteristics. While the part integral BMW Motorrad ABS systems already provide a very high degree of performance and safety when braking in a straight line, ABS Pro now takes this a step further to offer increased safety when braking in banking position as well.

The instrument panel of the new RR has also been completely newly developed and is now designed even more consistently for use in supersports racing. In addition to a maximum range of information, the BMW Motorrad developers paid particular attention to ensuring that the 6.5-inch TFT screen provides excellent readability – even in difficult light conditions.

The aim was to offer the rider individually tailored screen displays for different uses. The Pure Ride screen shows all the information required for regular road use while the three Core screens are designed for use on the race track, with the rev counter displayed in analogue form (Core 1 and 2) or else as a bar chart (Core 3), for example.

A new BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team will enter WorldSBK in collaboration with Shaun Muir Racing and with a well-known rider pairing: 2013 Superbike World Championship winner Tom Sykes (GBR) together with reigning Superstock 1000 European champion and three-times IDM champion Markus Reiterberger (GER).

With the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team and the cooperation with Shaun Muir Racing, BMW Motorrad is significantly expanding its engagement in the WorldSBK. At the same time, BMW Motorrad will continue its successful customer racing program in numerous other national and international racing series.

The legend of “Meccanica Verghera” and MV’s incredible record on the racetracks of the world in the 1960s and 1970s is celebrated in the MV Agusta Superveloce 800.

The machine you see here is dubbed a ‘concept’ but MV Agusta have stated that the bike will be produced in the second half of 2019.

Timeless classic lines pay homage to MV Agusta’s history but in the Superveloce 800 also sees plenty of modern styling cues successfully married in a tasteful nod to the heritage of iconic Italian brand. 

A carbon-fibre fairing envelopes the engine and frame while the upper fairing pays tribute to design ethos of the nineteen-seventies.

MV Agusta Superveloce LHRThe yellow colour of the plexiglass windscreen and the headlight unit in particular is certainly a nod to the psychadelic 70s. The latter is a technologically advanced twin-function full LED poly-ellipsoidal unit complete with LED daylight running light built into the cover of the new instrument cluster.

The sub-frame allows the owner to transform the bike from single-seat to pillion ready depending on their mood at the time.

A new circular LED tail light unit is distinctive.

The engine and braking system are directly derived from the MV Agusta F3 800, with some key adaptations that enhance the performance on the new Superveloce 800. The engine is entirely remapped to enhance the excellent power characteristics, without excluding an eventual increase in maximum power.

The entire exhaust system was redesigned based on the classic 3 in 1 in 3 layout, with the silencers placed asymmetrically: two are on the right side and one on the left, reminiscent of a prominent technical and aesthetic solution employed in MV Agusta’s racing history.

The riding position has been adapted directly from the F3 800 supersport bike, including the seat height, handlebars and footpegs, with the sole purpose of generating maximum riding efficiency.

Adjustable footpegs allow the rider to customize their position, guaranteeing a perfect rider-vehicle fit. The user-friendly handlebar and foot controls integrate perfectly with the clarity of the new TFT dashboard with dedicated graphics and a host of new features.

The fuel tank cap was specifically designed to integrate a characteristic leather strap that secures the fuel tank to the frame at the front and back.

The new MV Agusta Superveloce 800, in its final technical definition and stylistic form, will go into production in the second half of 2019.

Ducati’s Diavel launched at EICMA in 2010 to a great reception. Ducati took low slung, almost cruiser like styling and ergonomics, into a chassis with big power, great suspension and pretty good handling. For 2019 Ducati fits its up-spec Testastretta DVT 1262 engine to both the standard and new S editions.

The Testastretta DVT 1262 engine combines strong acceleration with smooth low-rev power delivery. This engine has already made a previous appearance on the Diavel platform in the XDiavel but now boasts more grunt for 2019.

An upgraded chassis set-up aims to make the Diavel 1260 more responsive on mixed-road routes – ideal for many Australian roads – while performance, braking and electronics provide performance akin to something much more sporting, including Bosch Cornering ABS.

Naturally comfort levels for rider and passenger remain a strong focus with an upright riding position and a large, generously padded seat.

The heart of the new Diavel 1260 is the 1262cc Ducati Testastretta DVT engine with variable cam timing. Already featured in the XDiavel, it has now been upgraded to output 159 hp (117 kW) at 9500rpm and 129 Nm (13.1 kgm) at 7500 rpm, providing good pulling power right from the low-medium rev range.

The variable timing system acts continuously on the intake and exhaust camshafts, meaning the engine adjusts power delivery to suit riding conditions, with smooth delivery at low revs, and sporty performance at high revs.

Power cruiser ergonomics & style

The riding position and ‘power cruiser’ ergonomics so popular with first-generation Diavelisti remain unchanged, however the new Diavel sports a prominent new tubular steel Trellis frame.

Anchored to the frame is an aluminium swingarm, designed to give cornering agility, feel and easy riding, while the rear wheel is shod in a wide 240 mm hoop – a Diavel hallmark.

Sophisticated electronics include the 6-axis Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (6D IMU) which instantaneously detects bike speed and acceleration and is crucial to the many electronics systems on the Diavel 1260. These systems includes Bosch Cornering ABS EVO, Ducati Traction Control EVO, Ducati Wheelie Control EVO, Ducati Power Launch EVO and Cruise Control.

A sportier S version of the Diavel 1260 will also available, featuring fully adjustable Öhlins suspension at both ends, dedicated wheels and an up-spec braking system.

Compared to the standard Diavel the 1260 S boasts radially mounted Brembo monobloc four-piston M50 callipers and a PR16/19 radial master-cylinder. The upspec suspension is a 48mm Öhlins adjustable USD fork with TiN treatment, while the rear is a Öhlins fully adjustable monoshock. The custom wheels are machined but share the same dimensions as those found on the standard.

The S version also mounts the Ducati Quick Shift up & down EVO system as standard to allow clutchless shifting.

This App also provides comprehensive maintenance deadline info, a user manual and a Ducati Store locator.
