Time for distinguished gents to register

It might seem early to be registering for the 10th annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, but the event has been moved forward from September to May from this year.

The ninth annual event went virtual in 2020 because of the pandemic, resulting in the number of participants and fundraising for the Movember Foundation being halved.

Now the men’s health charity event is permanently moving to May from this year.

Organisers hope the shift to May for the northern hemisphere riding season will better suit riders and increase fund-raising opportunities.

“We know how important it is to physically connect with our community,” the organisers said.

I’ve been to DGRs in various cities both here in Australia and overseas, and of course, the weather can be unpredictable.

While you can ride any time of the year in my home state of Queensland, DGR participants might prefer the more tweed-oriented cooler temps.

Veterans MC Victoria Chapter

Since 2012, the event has connected hundreds-of-thousands of classic and vintage style motorcyclists from more than 100 countries and raised $US27.45m for men’s health.

Organisers hope to crash through the $US30m barrier this year.

Ride founder Mark Hawwa of Sydney says the ride will vary according to pandemic restrictions in each country with some being virtual as they were last year.

Fund-raising incentive prices are:

  • Four new Triumph motorcycles, one of which will be a unique DGR-branded custom for the winner of the 2021 Gentlefolk Competition;
  • Custom top-50 fundraiser Hedon helmets with a 10th year anniversary design;
  • Up 10 Hedonist helmets custom-painted by 10 renowned artists and auctioned off during the campaign;
  • Belstaff classic motorcycle outfits for top fundraiser and sprint prizes for event fundraisers; and
  • ELF lubricants prizes.

Mental health program for riders

Last updated:

Male riders will soon have a chance to learn more about their motorcycle and their own state of mind thanks to a 12-week mental health pilot program.

The idea is the brainchild of mental health trainer, Brisbane Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride co-ordinator and Triumph Thruxton fan Jeff Gough (pictured above).

He is developing his Mind Moto course thanks to being one of 18 worldwide to score a Research & Development grant through the Movember/DGR Social Connections Challenge.

Jeff is now seeking to be one of the eight to get full funding.

“If not, I will go chasing sponsors,” he says.

Mind Moto is a 12 week mental health pilot program that uses common motorcycle skills, components and practices as analogies for thought processes and deeper mental health understandings.

Or as Jeff says: “We are putting the cog into cognition.”

Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Brisbane Jeff Gough fundraising
Jeff in the DGR

“This is a highly adaptable and novel approach to men’s mental health, designed to circumvent many of the traditional barriers, and enhance psychological well-being.

“This is achieved by utilising a known place of action, camaraderie, and learning – the workshop – to give men the confidence and security to explore mental health related ideals and issues.”

Jeff says the practical motorcycling course will be analogous for beneficial behaviours, thought processes, and mindsets.

It’s sort of a Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for the new age!

“Mind Moto uses a trusted environment and existing knowledge to facilitate understanding, discussion, and new learning around better mental health and mindset practices,” Jeff says.

“It is expected that the program will not only provide a higher level of understanding of motorcycling, making better riders, but provide a platform for deeper comprehension of cognitive processes and outcomes, creating healthier minds.”

Participants will not only learn practical tools for maintaining and riding their bike, but also to improve relationships, social connection and life-satisfaction.

Jeff says this will, in turn, minimise feelings of loneliness and isolation in the male motorcycling community.

The pilot program is targeted at male motorcyclists aged 30-49 years which is statistically the most at-risk group from both suicide and motorcycle crash fatalities.

“Improving the mental health and motorcycle skills for this age group will have the most benefit for male motorcyclists and the greatest potential impact for the pilot program,” Jeff says.

The pilot program will have a minimum of 20 participants and a maximum of 50. Click here to email Jeff.

Distinguished Gents Move to May Ride

After the coronavirus forced the ninth annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to go virtual in September, the men’s health charity event will permanently move to May from next year.

The virtual event resulted in the number of participants and fundraising for the November Foundation being halved.
Organisers hope the shift to May for the northern hemisphere riding season will better suit riders and increase fund-raising opportunities.

“We know how important it is to physically connect with our community,” the organisers say in a press release.

“The group events of DGR are integral in celebrating together, so we’re taking a turn in 2021 and shaking things up to bring us together, sooner.”

Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Brisbane Jeff Gough fundraising

Consequently, the 10th annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

“The new May date will open up the riding season for many of our dapper folks in the Northern Hemisphere, and those in the Southern Hemisphere will still be able to keep relatively dry and enjoy the day,” the organisers say.

“This is a significant change that has been decided on due to overwhelming feedback from our riders and volunteer hosts from around the world, based on the impact that the weather has had on the safety of our events in recent years.”

Delfast

Last year more than 115,000 motorcycles in 678 cities hit the roads to raise a record $US5.8m.

This year the event raised $US2.74m and attracted about 56,000 motorcyclists from 171 countries.

Still, the DGR has raised more than $US25m for men’s cancer research and mental health issues since it was founded by Mark Hawwa in Sydney in 2012.

Riders can pre-register for the 2021 event now at www.gentlemansride.com.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride flys solo for 2020

DGR Calls For Riders To Unite In 2020 Solo Edition Event

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is calling on riders all over the world to embrace the event’s first-ever solo edition, which will take place on Sunday, 27 September, 2020.

The global event uniquely brings together the motorcycle community and their passion for classic style bikes to support and raise funds for Movember, the men’s health charity. In 2019, the event brought together 116,000 motorcyclists across 100 countries over a shared love of classic styled bikes and helping others.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Founder – Mark Hawwa

Since our first year in 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has united riders all over the world, creating a spectacle and a statement from the motorcycle community in support of men’s health. 2020 will not be any different. This year we will still unite and ride dapper. We will still do everything we can to help men stop dying too young, alongside our charity partner, Movember. We invite riders to ride solo, but remain socially connected and united for the cause. For those riders that have previously considered taking part but never had a ride nearby, you can this year there’s no better reason and no better time to be part of DGR.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride solo edition will take place on Sunday, 27 September, 2020.

With respect to the varying global social distancing measures in place, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is encouraging its participants to ride solo or with a pillion on Sunday 27 Sept 2020. Riders will be encouraged to engage socially on all social media channels and the DGR website to showcase their efforts. Without organised mass-participation events, no matter where you are in the world you can dress in-theme, mount your steed, and ride for men’s health! For information on how you can ride solo, click here.

Movember founder – JC

Now more than ever we need to support men all over the world. We are living in challenging times, and we need to be focussed on our goal to make men take action, seek help and connect. We look to the DGR community to unite with us, as they do every year, in combining their passion for motorcycles, riding dapper and raising much-needed funds to support men’s mental health, suicide prevention and ground-breaking cancer research.”

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride solo edition will take place on Sunday, 27 September, 2020.

Funds raised from the 2019 event are being invested in research and mental health programs that will save the lives of men, and we are particularly excited by a new investment that will fund initiatives focussed on supporting first responders, who have worked tirelessly over the last few months.

Proudly continuing their support in 2020, Triumph Motorcycles are offering incredible prizes including brand new motorcycles for dedicated fundraisers. Returning alongside Triumph Motorcycles are Red Bull, Elf Lubricants, Hedon Helmets, SKRAM Moto Eyewear and media partner, Pipeburn. New to 2020 is Belstaff, joining the event as the official Motorcycle Outfitter of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

Win one of four Triumphs in solo DGR

Even though the pandemic has forced the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to go solo this year, Triumph Motorcycle is back on board as the major sponsor.

DGR operations manager Ramsey Sayed says the event will still go ahead on 27 September 2020 around the globe, but as a “ride solo, together” event.

Riders who register online, fundraise at least US200 for Movember, dress-up, and ride as individuals and/or with a pillion will be in the running to win one of three Triumph motorcycles.

One random winner will get a Bonneville T120 and the three highest fundraisers globally will also win Triumph motorcycles.

The top fundraiser gets a Triumph Thruxton RS, a Hedon DGR Kingpin helmet and $US2000 worth of Belstaff apparel.

Second and third fundraisers get a Triumph Scrambler 1200 and Speed Twin as well as the Hedon helmet and Belstaff gear.

There will also be Belstaff and Hedon prizes for the top 50 fundraisers, while those who raise $US200 or more get a 2020 DGR patch.

Solo DGRDistinguished Gentleman's Ride ladies

“The focus for this year will be to connect riders from all around the world, despite their COVID-19 social distancing restrictions,” Ramsey says.

“We want riders to know that we may be socially distanced, but we can still be connected digitally. It definitely came at a difficult time.

“We not only need to take people’s local lockdown restrictions into consideration, but we also needed to consider how riders and hosts have been financially affected in losing jobs and security, and how this may have impacted their lives. It’s a three-degrees of separation thing, some hosts either had COVID-19, or knew someone who did, and even have family members who lost their lives because of it. We wanted to be sensitive to those who spend countless hours volunteering to run their ride, who may not be able to get involved.

“The main thing we’d want people to be aware of here is that we know that some areas of the world might be opened up by the time DGR hits in 2020, but DGR isn’t only a local event – it’s a global movement – and when we have so many folks who are integral in running their rides who have been heavily impacted by this, we need to look out for each other.”

Many DGR fans may not like the virtual DGR idea but it will be a real test of the commitment of participants and whether they are doing it for the benefit of others and in the spirit of the event, or just for pleasure.

Pandemic forces virtual DGR and INTERMOT

The pandemic has forced the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and INTERMOT motorcycle show to go virtual, while the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will go ahead.

DGR operations manager Ramsey Sayed says it will still go ahead on 27 September 2020 around the globe, but as a “ride solo, together” event.

Riders around the world will be encouraged to dapper up and either hop on their bikes if they’re able to, or snap a shot of them with their classic and vintage styled motorcycle and join us online,” he says.

In the absence of formally organised rides, participants are asked to register online, fundraise for Movember, dress-up, and ride as individuals and/or with a pillion.

While it could conceivably have gone ahead in some countries such as Australia, it would not be possible to conduct the event in the usual manner in many other countries as they still have stringent lockdowns in place.

Movember fundsDistinguished Gentleman’s Ride record year Brisbane

Meanwhile, Movember has released the $A1.15 million DGR-funded Social Connections Challenge to provide grants for new programs helping the mental and physical health of men in motorcycling.

Movember and DGR are looking for ideas that:

  • Cast a wider net to engage socially isolated men and strengthen social connections;
  • Leverage opportunities to engage hard-to-reach men;
  • Strengthen peer-to-peer support;
  • Improve knowledge about mental health and suicide prevention; and
  • Create opportunities for role modelling and mentorship.

If you are interested in submitting an idea, click here to learn more or email [email protected]. The closing date for submissions in all markets is 6 July 2020.

Motorcycle show cancelled

Meanwhile, the biennial Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne in October has been cancelled.

It will be replaced by a virtual event before the end of the year with the event not scheduled to return again until 2022.

There is no word yet on the fate of the annual EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in November.

Sturgis goes ahead

While the pandemic has forced events, races and shows to go virtual, the world’s biggest motorcycle rally will go ahead in real life.

The Sturgis City Council has voted to go ahead with the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 7-16.

The event may not draw the usual hundreds of thousands f spectators this year and it will not include the usual parade, opening ceremony and B-1 bomber flyover.

Vendors will be required to wear personal protective equipment.

Mass testing is being considered for the safety of residents, but has not been approved.

Each test could cost $75 to $150 per person.

2019 DGR focuses on fundraising

The eight annual running of the successful The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride may be a little different with some rides announcing starting venues only 48 hours before the event to concentrate on fundraising efforts.

Some rides will also have a mandatory $20 donation from each rider.

The two voluntary moves were trialled in a few cities last year and will be added to more rides this year to ensure more fundraisers are involved and fewer ride-alongs.

More than 125,000 classic and vintage styled motorcyclists in more than 700 cities across 110 countries are expected to suit-up in their smartest attire for the ride on Sunday 29 September 2019.

DGR founder Mark Hawwa says he hopes to raise $US7 million for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health initiatives on behalf of official charity partner, the Movember Foundation.

That would be a substantial increase in fundraising on last tear’s total of $6.4 million.

Brisbane ride

One of the cities that continually “boxes above its weight” is Brisbane which was third highest global fundraiser in 2017 with a total of more than $150,000.

Jeff Gough who has been organising the Brisbane ride since the DGR started in 2012 says they are focussing more on fundraising this year.

They will have a $20 entrance fee and secret starting venue revealed by email to registered riders 48 hours before the ride.

“More riders does not mean more funds raised for prostate cancer,” the Triumph Thruxton rider says.

“We could have a lot more riders, but we cap it at 500 for insurance reasons.

“All the same, only 50% were fundraisers last year.”

The Brisbane ride will not start at Oliver’s Motorcycles this year, but Jeff says the dealership is still firmly behind the ride.

“Whoever turns up is welcome to take part,” he says.

“I haven’t got time to check, but I’d push for riders to follow the motorcycle style guide and stay with the distinguished theme of the event in dress.”

He confirms the ride will finish at Souths Rugby Union Club in Frederick St, Annerley, where everyone is invited and donations can be made to Movember Foundation.

“There will be enough room to host all bikes in the biggest rolling bike show in Brisbane,” he says.

The 40km ride to the venue will be escorted by MotoMedics with a doctor and DC Motorcycle Transport breakdown van riding along. As usual, there is no police escort.

The Souths venue will also feature trade stalls, three food vans, Ballistic Beer on tap, Ungerman Brothers gourmet ice cream from the Ipswich runner–up in MasterChef and swing/jazz music by the Royal Australian Navy Band.Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Brisbane Jeff Gough fundraising

Fundraising boon

Mark says Brisbane is consistently a top fundraiser along with major cities such as London, New York and Sydney.

“The ride organisers are volunteers, they are passionate about the cause and as such dedicate their own personal time to make the events happen,” he says.

“It is really on each individual and the DGR core team to motivate fundraising. Fortunately we have so many passionate people around the world and that continues to grow.

“Australians are charitable people.

“We are always willing to lend a hand when needed and help those around us.”Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Brisbane Jeff Gough fundraising

The incentive to raise the most money has been raised this year with not one, but four, Triumph motorcycles as prizes.

There will also be fundraising prizes of 100 Hedon special-edition DGR helmets, Elf Prize packs, REV’IT! Tailored Technology packs and more.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride website, www.gentlemansride.com, is a peer-to-peer fundraising platform allowing fundraisers to register, personalise, and share their online profiles. Riders must register on the website to take part and view their local ride details.

Skram motorcycle sunglasses are distinguished

The founder of  The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to launch a new range of distinguished Skram riding sunglasses.

DGR founder Mark Hawwa says Skram Motorcycle Eyewear is “a product that as motorcyclists we wanted to wear” and was a joint effort by him, colleague Rocco Repice and optometrist Elias Combes.

The flexible sunglasses cost $199 with earlybird investors getting some extras.

They are claimed to have 100% UV protection with shatterproof glass that makes them the “most protective” sunglasses on the market.

Mark claims they “searched for years testing over 50 different lenses until we found the set that we could put all of our trust into”.

Skram style

They come in three styles with a choice of brown tortoise shell or black frames and clear or yellow lenses that increase tint when exposed to the sunlight.

Prescription lenses will also be available for $99 extra ($79 for earlybird Kickstarter backers).

“Most importantly it had to be adaptive in different lighting conditions. Meaning no longer do you have to carry two pairs of glasses around. No longer do you need to change lenses,” Mark says.

“It is perfect for those who wear open-face and 3/4 helmets as well as those who like to ride with their full face helmet visor open.”

However, the glasses are not wrap-around, nor do they have gaskets to keep the wind out, so we’re not sure how they would go at highway speeds.

Riders should be careful of windburn in their eyes which can lead dry, itchy eyes and possibly blurred vision.

Funding goal

The Skram fundraising goal to go into production and start shipping in November is $A20,000.

Already more than $6000 has been pledged with about seven weeks to go.

They guarantee backers will get their money back if they do not meet their November delivery deadline.
