Triumph and Gibson augment DGR prizes

After putting up a special Triumph-themed Gibson guitar and Gibson-themed Triumph Bonneville as a major fundraiser prize for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, the companies have turned the amp up to 11.

Now they are offering three signed guitars as runner-up prizes for the 10th annual event on May 22. In the past nine years more than 100,000 riders in over 900 cities across the world have raised more than $US31 million for men’s mental health and prostate cancer awareness.

The major prize this year is a 1959 Legends Custom Edition Gibson Les Paul with Triumph design details and a 1959 Legends Custom Edition T120 Bonneville with Gibson design references.

The guitar has a hand-coach-lined pickguard inspired by the Bonneville’s trademark engine fins, and etched pick-up covers, branded truss rod cover and reissue switch backplate.

Triumph’s Bonneville T120 Gibson tribute features a hand-painted sunburst paint scheme like the Gibson with black painted guitar neck and headstock shape, edged with hand-painted coach lining, plus a host of branded touches.

They form the major prize for the best fundraiser at this year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a global charity for men’s mental health and prostate cancer awareness and fundraising.

The collaboration makes a lot of sense as many old rockers love their Bonnevilles and probably suffer from prostate issues!

And late last year Triumph Motorcycles announced it will continue its nine-year association with DGR for five more years.

Now, the companies have turned their amps up to 11 to offer more prizes for the DGR.

The three additional guitars are each signed by a famous musician, and each with a custom painted guitar case inspired by a legendary Triumph rider. The “Saints of Speed” custom guitar cases will be painted by the world-renowned guitar artist James Willis.

Donated to support The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, in its global charity efforts to raise awareness and funds in support of men’s mental health and prostate cancer, each of the Epiphone ‘Inspired by Gibson’ guitars pays homage to a Gibson music legend and each comes with the signature details and features that made them famous.

The custom hard case that comes with each guitar will be painted by famed Nashville guitar artist, James Willis, as part of a new “Saints of Speed” numbered series of custom cases, each commemorating a legendary Triumph rider. Willis is a multi-bike Triumph owner and will be participating in this year’s Gentleman’s Ride on his Scrambler 1200 XC motorcycle.

Further celebrating the connection between music and motorcycles, the guitars will be signed by musicians that are also passionate riders, each participating in this year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. The Epiphone ‘Inspired by Gibson’ J-200 will be signed by American country music artist Big Kenny, of Big & Rich. The Epiphone ‘Inspired by Gibson’ SG Standard will be signed by Canadian recording artist Clayton Bellamy of The Road Hammers. These additional prizes allow the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to further support fundraising across the world by rewarding fundraisers in unique categories, including the annual Gentlefolk prize, eligible for participants which raise over $US250. New prize categories for 2022 will be the Spirit of ’59 category, for any rider which raises over $US59, and the Team Triumph prize, for the highest fundraiser that has joined the official Triumph team or a Triumph dealership’s fundraising team.

Numbered “Saints of Speed” series custom guitar cases, each commemorating a legendary Triumph rider of the winner’s choosing, will be hand painted by famed Nashville guitar artist James Willis.

DGR goes from Himalayas to sea level

Over the past 10 years, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) raising awareness and funds for men’s health issues has literally gone from the top of the world to sea level for at least two participants.

In 2018, Sunshine Coast riders Carl Burroughs of Woombye Dental Group and Scott Macken of Scooter Style Noosa donned their finest and rode Royal Enfield Motorcycles to the highest inhabited village in the Himalayan mountains.

“It was a spectacular day, blue sky, snow on the ground and we all dressed up the best we could to get into the DGR spirit,” says Carl.

“This trip epitomised why DGR is so important. A couple of the lads on the Indian trip were struggling with personal mental health issues and the trip allowed them to feel supported and ended up helping them make some great choices which have resulted in a vast improvement to their lives” Carl Burroughs stated.

This year Carl and Scott will host the Sunshine Coast DGR starting in Noosa on May 22.

There will be a post-ride event at The Apollonian Hotel at Boreen Point from 11.30am with a band, competitions, Show ’n’ Shine and prizes in various categories such as best-dressed men, women and. kids.

So far 136 riders have registered and $18,087 in funds raised. Their target is 250 riders and $50,000 in funds raised for Movember.

All funds donated will go to DGR and the prostate and mental health charities they support.

Registration is free, but participants are encouraged to raise money and go in the running for several fundraising prizes.

Now in its tenth year, DGR has raised over $31m and the ride has spread to more than 115 countries from its humble start in Sydney in 2012.

The grand prize this year consists of one-off models from Gibson guitars and Triumph motorcycles that celebrate the link between musical and motorcycle rockers.

The 1959 Legends Custom Edition Gibson Les Paul comes with Triumph design details, while Triumph has unveiled a 1959 Legends Custom Edition T120 Bonneville with Gibson design references.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

2021 has been a momentous year already for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, with tens of thousands of dapper gentlefolk around the world coming together in all their finery to celebrate the event’s 10 year anniversary in May. The charity motorcycling event raised an incredible $4.1M USD in 2021, reaching the global total of funds raised since the event began to over $31.5M USD.

Not only did the ride find its home for the first time in May, but it brought together over 65,000 classic and vintage motorcycle enthusiasts at a time where events and social connections have been impacted so heavily in 913 cities and 116 countries around the world.

Getting riders together and encouraging people to connect and communicate has never been more important. Since 2012, the event has connected hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists together from over 116 countries around the world and to date has raised over $31.5M USD for men’s health.

In 2021, the funds raised by the event have been donated directly to its global charity partner, Movember. Movember is the leading global organization focussed solely on men’s health, and in The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, the funds will be directed toward prostate cancer and men’s mental health research and programs.

Movember and DGR have worked strategically to help men in motorcycling live happier and healthier lives; so much to the point that they have allocated $1.15M AUD to pilot and deliver programs specifically directed at improving social connectedness, life satisfaction, and mental wellbeing of motorcycle riders.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride celebrates 10 Years Of Being Dapper For A Cause

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) is celebrating 10 years of dapper rides, fashionable fundraising, and essential support for mens’ mental health – and they’ve come a long way from year one.

According to a report by the Jersey Evening Post, the DGR originally began in 2012 and was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa – a man dedicated to connecting motorcycle enthusiasts and communities for a cause.

The first ride was hosted in 64 cities and saw 3,000 riders hitting the pavement to support cancer research.

By 2019, that number had shot up to 116,000 riders across 678 cities and 104 countries, raising a total of $12,450,000 to date – and continuing with the ageless theme (taken from Don Draper in “Mad Men”) of suits and scramblers.

2020 was a rough year, landing only 3,000 riders due to riding restrictions – but the DGR also used this limitation to their advantage, hosting the Ride Solo Together Event.

Today, this option remains if your town or city cannot comply with the features of a full DGR ride.

Applicable rides include anything considered classic or vintage style; that includes brat-style bikes, choppers, scooters, trackers, bobbers, and cafe racers – and make sure to dress like a debonair!

For this year, the main DGR for 2021 was moved from the fall to the week of May 23, with hopes to raise an extra $2.55 million by Movember, the single largest fundraiser for men’s health.

Distinguished Gents Move to May Ride

After the coronavirus forced the ninth annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to go virtual in September, the men’s health charity event will permanently move to May from next year.

The virtual event resulted in the number of participants and fundraising for the November Foundation being halved.
Organisers hope the shift to May for the northern hemisphere riding season will better suit riders and increase fund-raising opportunities.

“We know how important it is to physically connect with our community,” the organisers say in a press release.

“The group events of DGR are integral in celebrating together, so we’re taking a turn in 2021 and shaking things up to bring us together, sooner.”

Consequently, the 10th annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

“The new May date will open up the riding season for many of our dapper folks in the Northern Hemisphere, and those in the Southern Hemisphere will still be able to keep relatively dry and enjoy the day,” the organisers say.

“This is a significant change that has been decided on due to overwhelming feedback from our riders and volunteer hosts from around the world, based on the impact that the weather has had on the safety of our events in recent years.”

Last year more than 115,000 motorcycles in 678 cities hit the roads to raise a record $US5.8m.

This year the event raised $US2.74m and attracted about 56,000 motorcyclists from 171 countries.

Virus hits DGR fundraising

Instead of riders hitting the roads together, they were asked to socially distance by riding solo and posting their ride on social media with the catch cry “Riding Solo, Together”.

As expected, participation in the September 27 event and fundraising was subsequently down.

This year the event raised $US2.74m and attracted about 56,000 motorcyclists from 171 countries.

Still, the DGR has raised more than $US25m for men’s cancer research and mental health issues since it was founded by Mark Hawwa in Sydney in 2012.

“I’m continually blown away by the DGR community and their incredible support for each other and Movember,” he says, acknowledging that the pandemic “presented some pretty huge barriers”.

“The key thing we all need to do right now is stay socially connected even when physically distanced; it’s actually crucial and it saves lives.

DGR Calls For Riders To Unite In 2020 Solo Edition Event

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is calling on riders all over the world to embrace the event’s first-ever solo edition, which will take place on Sunday, 27 September, 2020.

The global event uniquely brings together the motorcycle community and their passion for classic style bikes to support and raise funds for Movember, the men’s health charity. In 2019, the event brought together 116,000 motorcyclists across 100 countries over a shared love of classic styled bikes and helping others.

Win one of four Triumphs in solo DGR

Even though the pandemic has forced the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to go solo this year, Triumph Motorcycle is back on board as the major sponsor.

DGR operations manager Ramsey Sayed says the event will still go ahead on 27 September 2020 around the globe, but as a “ride solo, together” event.

Riders who register online, fundraise at least US200 for Movember, dress-up, and ride as individuals and/or with a pillion will be in the running to win one of three Triumph motorcycles.

One random winner will get a Bonneville T120 and the three highest fundraisers globally will also win Triumph motorcycles.

The top fundraiser gets a Triumph Thruxton RS, a Hedon DGR Kingpin helmet and $US2000 worth of Belstaff apparel.

Second and third fundraisers get a Triumph Scrambler 1200 and Speed Twin as well as the Hedon helmet and Belstaff gear.

There will also be Belstaff and Hedon prizes for the top 50 fundraisers, while those who raise $US200 or more get a 2020 DGR patch.

Solo DGR

“The focus for this year will be to connect riders from all around the world, despite their COVID-19 social distancing restrictions,” Ramsey says.

“We want riders to know that we may be socially distanced, but we can still be connected digitally. It definitely came at a difficult time.

“We not only need to take people’s local lockdown restrictions into consideration, but we also needed to consider how riders and hosts have been financially affected in losing jobs and security, and how this may have impacted their lives. It’s a three-degrees of separation thing, some hosts either had COVID-19, or knew someone who did, and even have family members who lost their lives because of it. We wanted to be sensitive to those who spend countless hours volunteering to run their ride, who may not be able to get involved.

“The main thing we’d want people to be aware of here is that we know that some areas of the world might be opened up by the time DGR hits in 2020, but DGR isn’t only a local event – it’s a global movement – and when we have so many folks who are integral in running their rides who have been heavily impacted by this, we need to look out for each other.”

Many DGR fans may not like the virtual DGR idea but it will be a real test of the commitment of participants and whether they are doing it for the benefit of others and in the spirit of the event, or just for pleasure.
