Recall delays BMW S 1000 RR delivery

Riders who have ordered a new BMW S 1000 RR will have a bit of a wait as the company finds a fix for a recall over an oil leak before delivery.

We published the recall notice last month, but riders tell us they are still waiting on the delivery of bikes from Germany.

BMW Motorrad Australia Nick Raman confirms the delay in fulfilling orders.

Delivery delay

“BMW AG is in the final stages of testing the repair solution,” he says.

“Based on the successful conclusion of the tests and approval of the repair solution, parts will be produced and distributed to markets.

“Anticipated timing for the first parts to be available in Australia is late December 2019 to early January, 2020.”

The recall notice was over oil leaks from cracks in the rubber hose of the BMW S 1000 RR’s oil cooler.

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the oil leak may spray on to the rear wheel of the motorcycle “increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the rider and other road users”.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer, or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for inspection and replacement of the oil cooler, where required.

The recall on oil leaks affects 77 bikes, plus the delivery of an unknown number of bikes on order.

The full list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) is included at the end of this article.

Consumers can also contact BMW Australia via the BMW Motorrad Australia Website.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, only the Takata airbag recall has ever been mandatory.  All others have been issued by the manufacturer.

Indian to issue recall over gear indicator

Indian Motorcycle Australia is about to issue a recall for their big cruisers and baggers from 2014-19 over an issue with the gear position indicator.

The recall notice has been issued in the US, but is still be sorted out with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in the next few days.

Indian Motorcycle Australia spokesman Chris Gale says they are “working with the ACCC to finalise everything”.

Some 52,745 bikes were recalled in the US, but there is no indication of how many are affected here.

What’s the issue?

Indian says the gear indicator switch could oxidise and show an incorrect gear which is not a huge issue.

However, it may also show it is in neutral when it is actually in gear.

That could cause the bike to stall or suddenly move forward if the rider lets the clutch out.

Models affected are 2014-19 Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster and Springfield.

2017 Indian Roadmaster Classic

Replacement parts are not available until early 2020, but riders are expected to be asked to bring in their bikes to have the switch cleaned as an interim measure.

When parts are available, owners will be asked to bring their bike in for a free replacement.

It is the first recall notice for Indian this year.

In 2018, they had three recalls: Scout models for brake issues; some Thunderstroke-powered models for  faulty right switchblocks; and Roadmaster for a lack of waterproofing in the rear top box.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

Ducati recalls 199 and 1299 Panigale over oil leaks

Ducati Australia has recalled 183 1199 and 1299 Panigale models over a potential oil leak problem.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the engine oil breather system may operate incorrectly “possibly resulting in an oil leak from the air intake breather tube”.

“Oil may leak from the air intake on to the engine and tyres, increasing the risk of an accident and injury to the passenger(s) and other road users.”

(Not sure why the official notice thinks you would have more than one passenger!)

Owners will be sent a letter requesting them to contact their closest Ducati dealer or service agent “as soon as possible” to make an appointment for a free inspection.

The vehicle identification numbers of affected bikes are listed at the end of this article.

Panigale recalls

This is the third recall notice for Ducati this year and the first for the Panigale 1199 or 1299 since 2015.

However, Ducati has recalled the Panigale V4 five times with four recalls in its first year of production.

This latest recall comes as Ducati has announced its 2020 models, including updates for the Panigale V4.

BMW recalls big tourers over locking wheel

BMW Motorrad Australia has recalled its big K 1600 touring fleet over a transmission issue which could result in a locking rear wheel.

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time.

BMW K 1600 B bagger confirms
BMW K 1600 B bagger

Locking danger

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission points out the dangers:

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time. If two gears are engaged at the same time, the rear wheel may lock and/or the teeth of the gearwheels shear off, depending on the road conditions and the speed of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the vehicle’s passenger(s) or other road users.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for a free repair.

It’s the fourth recall for BMW this year and the third this month following the recent oil leak problem with the S 1000 RR and the Indian-made G 310 bikes and C 400 scooters over a problem with rusty brakes.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Oil leaks prompt BMW S 1000 RR recall

Oil leaks from cracks in the rubber hose of the BMW S 1000 RR’s oil cooler have prompted an Australian recall on the 2019 model.

The recall on oil leaks affects 77 bikes. The full list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) is included at the end of this article.

BMW Motorrad Australia has only made one other recall this year for the Indian-made G 310 motorcycles and new C 400 scooters last month over a problem with rusty brakes.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Second recall for Harley-Davidson saddlebags

Harley-Davidson Australia has again issued a recall over the possibility of their saddlebags falling off.

In 2015 they issued a recall for their Touring models because the standard saddlebags could fall off.

It was unfortunately too late for me as we lost the right saddlebag off a Road King while touring in New Zealand. Thankfully nothing valuable was lost.

Accessory saddelbags

While Harley fixed that problem on its Touring models, they are now having a similar problem with the latches working their way loose on accessory bags.

They say the latching arm may become “disengaged from the mounting plate or bracket”.

“The latching arm could rotate out of the locked position and the saddlebag may become separated from the motorcycle while it is in motion, posing a road hazard for other motorists,” the recall notice says.

The part numbers for the affected saddlebags are: 90201561, 90201552, 90201644, 90201645, 90201555 and 90201513.Harley Saddlebags recall

Owners of affected saddlebags should contact their nearest Harley dealership to arrange an inspection and free fix.

In then meantime, we suggest you tape that latch down so it doesn’t come loose.

Interestingly, Harley has issued the warning itself before the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has had time to post their recall which can often be delayed for a couple of weeks.

It’s typical of Harley to get on the front foot over recall issues. Last year Harley had only two recalls. This is their second recall this year.

We expect the official notice to show up soon on the ACCC’s website.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

Yamaha recall bikes over missing sticker

Yamaha Motor Australia has recalled 1193 MT-07 and XSR700 models for a missing exhaust noise compliance sticker.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says correct Stationary Noise Data labels were not fitted to these motorcycles in production.

It is a requirement of the Australian Design Rule ADR 83 for the sticker to be attached to each motorcycle.

Riders risk being fined by police for non-compliance.

Obviously, you could successfully fight such a fine, but it would be an inconvenience.

Easy fix

Owners have been advised to “immediately contact their local Yamaha Dealer and arrange to have the label attached at no charge”.

In the meantime, we suggest you keep a copy of this article on hand to show to police if they intend to issue a notice.

Click here to see a complete list of vehicle identification numbers for the 1193 affected bikes.

Consumers can find their nearest authorised Yamaha dealership by clicking here.

The MT-907 and XSR700 were also recalled last year for loose chain protector bolts.

Missing stickers

It is not the first time motorcycles have been recalled for a missing noise sticker.

In 2016, Braaap motorcycles were recalled over the sticker issue and last year several Triumph models were recalled for the missing noise sticker.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Ducati recalls Panigale V4 for fifth time

Ducati has now recalled a variant of the Panigale V4 for the fifth time with four recalls in its first year of production.

On this occasion, it’s for a fuel leak in the 2018-19 Panigale V4 range and the 2019 Panigale V4 R, totalling 445 motorcycles in Australia.

Australian owners of the affected bikes will be sent a letter requesting them to contact their closest Ducati dealer or service agent “as soon as possible”.

Owners will be asked to make an appointment for an update of the motorcycle’s fuel tank ventilation system.

They will also receive a sticker with warning/instructions on how to correctly open the fuel cap.

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) of all affected bikes are listed at the end of this article or click here.

Fifth recall notice

It is the fifth official notice has issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The notice says the fuel tank ventilation system “may be defective and cause pressure to build in the tank, resulting in fuel potentially spraying out of the tank when the fuel cap is opened”.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

Triumph Speed Twin recall on coolant

Triumph has issued the sixth recall on models in the new Bonneville liquid-cooled range with a safety notice for the Speed Twin over coolant leaks.

The official safety recall notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the coolant hose between the radiator and expansion tank may have been misrouted during assembly.

“A misrouted hose may come into contact with the exhaust header pipe, potentially causing damage to the coolant hose,” the notice says.

“If the coolant hose is damaged, it may lead to a loss of coolant in the area of the rear tyre. The rear tyre may lose traction without warning, resulting in an accident and causing serious injury to the rider and other road users.”

Owners have been advised to contact their dealer to make an appointment “as soon as possible” to have their motorcycle inspected, and if necessary, repaired free of charge.

The Speed Twin was only hit the showroom floors last month and already 60 have been sold.

The Vehicle Identification Numbers of affected bikes are listed at the end of this article.

Harley recalls Street models over rusty brakes

Harley-Davidson Australia has recalled 4798 Street 500 and Street Rod 750 models over problems with rusty brake calipers.

The official recall notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, says that brake calipers may become rusty in the bore area.

“This corrosion could result in the pistons dragging in the caliper bore,” it says.

“If this condition remains undetected it could lead to increased brake drag, posing a risk of accident and serious injury to the rider and other road users.”

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.
