Broc Pearson wraps up Australian Supersport Championship in nail-biting finale

2021 Motorsports TV Supersport Championship

Broc Pearson celebrated his 21st birthday on the weekend by winning the Motorsports TV Supersport Championship aboard his City2Surf Locksmith and YRD backed Yamaha YZF R6 in a cliff-hanger last race at the Bend Motorsport Park, for the mi-bike Motorcyle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul.

The Queenslander is no stranger to epic battles having come so close to glory over recent seasons only to end up with severe injuries, and seriously considered giving the sport away as his accidents included breaking his back.

The last two interrupted COVID years have allowed Pearson to fully recover from his serious injuries, concentrate on his fitness, training, come to grips with his Yamaha and start the season fully fit.

With 13 points covering the top three riders going into the weekend, the pressure was on for Pearson, Bikebiz Yamaha Edwards and GTR MotoStars Max Staffuer in third to deliver.

While Pearson, an 8-time Australian flat track champion secured pole and a crucial point in yesterday’s qualifying session, the real pressure came in race one today.

Pearson had a poor start with Edwards and Stauffer passing him into turn 1 on lap one.

Edwards wasted no time in breaking away from the pack and despite passing Stauffer, Pearson had no way of reeling in Edwards who took the win.

In race 2, the pressure was on as the Championship split between Pearson and Edwards was one solitary point and Edwards was full of confidence going into the final race.

Edwards led the Yamaha charge from the start of race two with Pearson, Stauffer, Billy Van Eerde and Luke Power aboard the Kawasaki in 5th.

Pearson was able to pass Stauffer and close slightly on Edwards by the end of the first lap.

Unfortunately for returning World Supersport rider Billy Van Eerde he crashed out on lap 2, as a gap opened up between Stauffer in third and Power in 4th.

In the pursuing laps Edwards and Pearson would again, as they have done all year, break lap records at ease.

Pearson dived into the lead on lap 3 after Edwards had a moment bouncing himself out of his seat.

Pearson continued to look behind to see where Edwards was in the pursuing laps as the riders went from recording 1:54 lap times into the 56s.

Pearson opened up a small gap to Edwards on lap 5, as Stauffer and Power were logging quicker lap times with Power closing on Stauffer.

Edwards dived down the inside on Pearson as the riders headed towards the main straight on lap 5, but Pearson used the slip stream down the main straight to regain the lead into turn 1.

Start of lap 8 and Edwards attempted a pass at turn one and again at turn 2 but was unable to get it done.

Edwards snatched the lead heading into the final lap but Pearson again used the slip stream down the main straight to pass him.

Pearson was hard on the gas on the last lap with plenty of bike movement as his tyres squealed as Edwards looked for every opportunity to pass.

As Edwards pulled out of the slip stream on the main straight, he was unable to make the pass, and finished a mere 0.050 of a second behind.

Pearson still can’t believe it, the dream he had earlier this week turned into reality.

Broc Pearson

This can’t be real, I had a dream the other night, no lie, I won both races in my dream and it was the perfect weekend. I woke up and realised I was dreaming, but it shows how much it had been on my mind this week.

“I came out and gave it everything and I was willing to land on my head to win the Championship.

“I really can’t believe it.

“I had bike set-up issues in the first race, Tommy had me covered and executed his plan perfectly.

“We then made a small change which gave me confidence and I pretty much gave it every I had.

“I was done a number of times over the years, not being able to work and other injuries, but I stayed motivated as I’ve got a good crew around me, good mates, and family, and I’m hungry to win races.

“I didn’t see a day like to today, coming when I was 16 in a wheelchair with a broken back.

Pearson who has been testing in recent months on a Superbike, now concentrates on stepping up a class with a new Queensland based Yamaha outfit based alongside the Metcher Motorsports Team and is believed to include top-level ASBK technicians including Paul Free, Stewart Winton and Brent Stephens.

There’s a bit of excitement, it will be a big learning year next year and I don’t know where I will be at but will give it my all.

Tom Toparis makes it two-from-two in ASBK Supersport

2019 ASBK
Round One – Phillip Island
Supersport Race Two

Tom Toparis ran away with the opening Australian Supersport race which left Nic Liminton, Callum Spriggs and Oli Bayliss to fight it out for the other steps on the podium.

Toparis again jumped away from the pack and immediately started stretching away as Nic Liminton, Oli Bayliss, Reid Battye, Ty Lynch and Callum Spriggs vainly gave chase.

Toparis did it easily once again while Nic Liminton was the best of the rest, putting in consistent 37s to pull away from Oli Bayliss, who managed to stave off a late attack from Broc Pearson to claim his first Supersport 600 podium.

Oli Bayliss and the switch to Supersport 600

Oli Bayliss joins the Supersport field for 2019

By Mark Bracks

There will be plenty written about Oli Bayliss this year as he debuts in the 600cc Supersport Championship. As reported in our extensive Supersport wrap, at the end of the recent ASBK two-day test young Bayliss was third fastest. A remarkable effort considering his tender years.

So how did those close to him reckon he went? We spoke to his famous father Troy, and also his new Crew Chief, mentor and as he says ‘new Dad’, the vastly experienced Glen Richards.

Richards has been around race tracks and paddocks for decades and brings a wealth of experience with him as a rider, mechanic, crew chief, rider advisor and mentor.

First up Troy Bayliss

MCNews: How do you rate Oli’s first days on the bike.

Troy: Ollie has now had six days on the bikes and he’s been impressive, getting better and better, and he hasn’t scathed one yet. He’s absolutely loving it, so I’m sure he’s going to learn a lot come the first race. No one wants to show him anything on track, he’s done it all by himself.

“The only time he’s been with anyone was with me, at Morgan Park to do a few laps. But that’s it, you don’t believe what anyone here in this paddock tells you… You do not. Unless you’re talking to me, I’ll tell you the truth. You have to work it out for yourself, and he’s going to have to work a lot of things out when it comes to the first race. But he’s having a great time, we’re looking forward to seeing how the season goes.”

Glen Richards on Oli Bayliss

MCNews: And Glen can you explain your role with Oli and how it came to be?

Glen Richards: “I’m the new dad now, aren’t I, I’m Oli’s dad! I’m doing quite a few jobs really. I’m looking after Oli, as in a crew chief role, obviously in a small team it’s a hand on job, compared to where I was a crew chief in BSB in the last few years. I’ve got one extra set of hands in Jonno at the track, so there’s two of us. I enjoy that side, I like being hands on, I’m just trying to do the best job I can, in giving Oli as much experience from my point of view, which is obviously always going to be a little bit different to his dad’s.

Oli Bayliss R Glen Richards
Oli Bayliss will work with Glen Richards for ASBK season 2019

“Ben [Henry] back at the workshop has done a fantastic job and got the engines working well, Troy has been flat out helping me build the bikes, we only started building the bikes less than a month ago. We’ve done quite a bit of testing now and Oli has done 37s first time – he did 37.4s and last time he was racing he was doing 49s on the a 300, so he’s having a massive steep learning curve. All credit to him, he’s chipped away at it, bit by bit, got faster and faster, as the testing has gone on, so I’m well impressed with his attitude and his ability to work through a little program of testing. At 15 years of age I think it’s amazing really.

“I helped Alex Lowes with many things, I did three years in WorldSBK and at that stage I had retired from racing, but was still riding the Suzuki as a test rider, and helping Alex at race meetings. After three years of that it was one of those things, he was sort of moving forward with his career, and I wanted to be a bit more hands on, on the bikes, so I became a crew chief in the BSB, where I was working purely on the motorbike with Jake Dixon. Again that was a little team and I really enjoyed that but now I’m back in Australia and I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I spoke to Troy about helping out with Ollie and so far what we’ve done the last month has been a massive job to build two bikes and test, you know in a month, but we’ve done it. Like I said there’s a very good base, with Cube Racing, and the help that Troy has around him, an easy thing to do, to set the 600 team up really.”

Phillip Island Official ASBK Test – Support Class Wrap

Toparis tops Supersport time sheets

The first session of the Supersport class on Saturday saw Tom Toparis getting his year off to a good start, in what serves as a warm up for his racing season, which now also includes a wildcard entry in Round 1 of the FIM World Supersport Championship at the end of the month.

Toparis was in intimidating form as he set fastest time of the day on the Yamaha R6, his first outing for the marque after moving over from Kawasaki.

Right behind Toparis was Nicholas Liminton (Yamaha Motor Aust., Yamaha YZF-R6) in second and Aidan Hayes (Hayes Johnston Pty Ltd Chartered Accountants, Yamaha YZF-R6) in third place.

Oli Bayliss (Yamaha YZF-R6) was knocking on the door of the top group but couldn’t catch third placed Pearson, ending up fourth with a 1.37.840. Behind him was Reid Battye (Suzuki, Suzuki GSX-R), seemingly getting more comfortable on the bike after a slow first session to finish fifth fastest.

If Tom Toparis was in intimidating form on Day 1, then on Sunday he proved he was untouchable. Already down into the 1:35’s by lunchtime, Toparis (1:35.295) pushed his Landbridge Yamaha almost two seconds clear of second placed Nic Liminton (1:37.273) who despite improving as the weekend progressed still didn’t have the pace to catch the World Supersport wild card rider.

After a weekend’s worth of trying, Oli Bayliss finally managed to crack the top three for the second and third sessions of the day despite reportedly clipping a stray bird whilst out on track. He finished the weekend in third position behind Liminton and Toparis in what was a superb improvement from yesterday.

Fighting it out for best of the rest all weekend was Broc Pearson and Reid Battye, who were consistently in the top five runners all weekend. Pearson ended the weekend on a 1:37.588 to leave him in fourth, while Battye could only manage a 1:38.142 which left him fifth.

Aidan Hayes and Territorian Sam Lambert managed to dip into the top five in the morning however couldn’t seem to match the top three for pace on a consistent basis. Pearson (1:37.588) ended up fifth and Lambert (1:38.134) ended the weekend in sixth.

YMI Supersport 300 / YMF R3 Cup

He’s new to the team and the bike, but nothing could stop Locky Taylor in taking out the fastest overall lap time in the YMI Supersport 300 and YMF R3 Cup classes on Saturday. Taylor clocked in a fastest time of 1:49.429, ahead of Seth Crump (Rockoil, KTM RC 390) who finishes Day One with the second fastest overall time of 1:49.768.

Crump clocked in a best time of 1:49.249, sitting pretty ahead of second place holder Locky Taylor (YRD, Yamaha R3 321) with a 1:49.429. Taylor continued his fantastic form from Saturday’s practice sessions, maintaining a cool head into today’s rising temperatures.

Third fastest for Sunday was Senna Agius (Kawasaki Ninja 400) with a time of 1:49.581. Agius has been riding comfortably with the leading pack all day, appearing in the top three places for each of his four practice sessions. Breathing down Agius’ neck and trailing by a mere .36 seconds was Max Stauffer (Yamaha, Yamaha R3 321), with the fourth fastest time of 1:49.617.

bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup

The first ever practice session for the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup kicked off on Saturday as the first time Motorcycling Australia’s Junior Road Race Academy program had ever taken to the track.

Damien Cudlin led the field out for their first two supervised laps before waving the field past and unleashing the 25 youngsters onto the Phillip Island circuit for the very first of their practice sessions.

The first untimed session gave the kids the chance to feel their way around the circuit and the bikes at their own pace, before the timing started and the young riders started to come to grips with how the bikes handled.

Fastest time of the day went to Lucas Quinn (2:15.668), ahead of Grenfell and Carter Thompson.

As the pitlane opened on Sunday and the sessions began the youngsters would crank the throttle wide open and swarm out of pit exit, anxious to make the most of every second of their fifteen minutes on track.

The action was akin to a mini Moto3 race, with bunches of six and seven riders having five lap long drafting chains exciting enough to draw a few of the top class riders out of the pit garages for a look at the action.

By the time the weekend finished it was Queensland’s Max Gibbons who came out on top, setting a impressive 2:14.375 to take fastest of the day, followed by Carter Thompson (2:14.835), Archie McDonald (2:14.897), New Zealand’s Cormac Buchanan (2:14.957), and Angus Grenfell (2:15.082).

Rider coach Damien Cudlin was thrilled with the performance of the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup riders.

Damien Cudlin

“So far it’s been a really positive test, I think the kids have all really enjoyed themselves, they’ve learnt a whole lot. “They’ve really surprised me and I think a lot of people in the pitlane with how professional they’ve been and how well they’re riding already, so I’m even more excited to see them in their first race.”

The young racers’ next outing is at Wakefield Park, where the Junior Road Race Academy will go racing for real with the first-ever Oceania Junior Cup round joining Round 2 of ASBK. If this weekend’s performance is anything to go by, these young talented riders will be itching to be the first to stamp their name on the series and will be providing us with some absolutely thrilling racing.
