The 2020 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup has wrapped up with a second round at Valencia, and while Pedro Acosta had already been crowned 2020 champion, the battle was on for the silver and bronze medals.

Pedro Acosta had already been crowned 2020 Champion

An exceptional performance from David Muñoz with two wins from two races was enough to leave him tied on points with Iván Ortolá, but the two wins clenched the runner-up position for Muñoz.

2020 Champions – David Munoz, Pedro Acosta, Ivan Ortola

Australian Billy van Eerde had to bow out for the final round after injuring his ankle in FP2 and finished the season 13th overall in the standings, with numerous injuries during the season adding an additional challenge. The previous round at Valencia saw van Eerde’s best result of the season with third in Race 1, however a crash in Race 2 was a disappointing end to the weekend.

Billy van Eerde

Prior to that P8 at Aragon in Race 1 for Round 4 was a promising start, before a late crash in Race 2 saw Billy fracture two metacarpals in his left hand, discovered after swelling and pain meant a trip to the hospital for a checkup.

This was after Billy returned to racing after braking his femur in August, requiring surgery to have it pinned, with 2020 proving a rocky year overall. He now returns to Australia to recover.

“The 2020 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup has come to an end for me. Firstly I would like to let everyone know that I won’t be competing in the last races of the season. During FP2 I hurt my ankle and do not feel 100 per cent fit. The decision wasn’t taken lightly but I feel it was the right decision. I will now focus on regaining my fitness and strength at home in Australia for next year.  The past three years has been an amazing ride and I thank everyone involved in this awesome project. The organizers, Peter Clifford, Marlene and my mechanic Juan, who have been there with me from the beginning A huge thank you! I have enjoyed my time with you all and will take with me great memories and will remember all the fun times had by all. Congratulations to Pedro Acosta for taking out the championship. Very well deserved.

A strong finish by Billy van Eerde saw him seventh in Race 2

“Special mention to Pole Position Travel for all their support over the past two years. Laura, Claudia, Neil and many more who have supported and helped me adapt to living over in Europe. Will catch up soon. In a couple of days Dad and I will be boarding the big bird and heading back to Australia to family and friends. We are looking forward to catching up with everyone. Huge thanks to Jack Miller for everything, your guidance and support is greatly appreciated and thanks again to Shane Stratton TM Racing Andorra for always there helping out as well. Thanks once again to everyone for the support and encouragement over the past three years. Would not have been able to experience this journey without you all. I will now put 2020 behind me now and focus on the future. Its been crazy times during the Covid pandemic and I hope you all stay safe in Europe and have a Great Christmas.”

Race 1

David Muñoz took his first victory in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup on the line after a titanic 10 man battle, with Iván Ortolá was just 0.040 seconds behind and David Salvador third for an all Spanish podium.

David Muñoz

“I really enjoyed the battle with my mates. It was difficult, the track was slippery but the same for everyone and I kept pushing all the way. I had a great run through the last corner to take the win just before the finish line. The bike was really good and though it will be difficult again tomorrow but the race is a little earlier and the weather forecast is warmer so I hope the track gives more grip.”

David Muñoz

There was drama from start to finish with pole man Daniel Holgado crashing out of the lead early, David Muñoz missed him but Cup champion Pedro Acosta went down. Those three had looked capable of breaking away but after that no one managed a clear advantage and any of the top 10 might have won on the final lap.

16-year-old Ortolá just couldn’t hold on for the win sharing, “I am very happy with that, I didn’t make a good start but lap by lap I caught up and in the last few laps I was able to fight for the win. I got in front and closed the door, defended as much as I could but I didn’t make a perfect job of the last corner and David overtook me on the run to the flag. I’m happy that I have moved up to 2nd in the championship and I hope to do well tomorrow. The bike was really great, so much better than last weekend when we did not get any dry practice to sort it out. This weekend we made a great setting.”

Salvador came back perfectly after a lap penalty under a red flag, recomposed himself and was back on point. “I am very happy for this race because after yesterday, getting the long lap penalty I was very upset,” explained the 16-year-old. “I just didn’t see the Red Flag. So I took the long lap at the start of the race, I had worked out in my mind exactly how I would do it and it went perfectly so I could catch up again and get into the lead quite quickly. The pace was very good and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a great battle with David and Ortolá, so many overtakes and an incredible battle with these riders.”

David Munoz

Marcos Uriarte was just off the podium, but positive about a fourth place finish. “This weekend I felt very good on the motorcycle,” stated the 15-year-old Spaniard.” Yesterday I crashed in Qualifying, the first lap after we had stopped for the Red Flag so that is why I was only 14th on the grid. Today I pushed so hard but I just missed the podium. The bike was incredible today, I really enjoyed it so tomorrow I hope I can do even better.”

Another rider proving fast once again was Mario Aji, who was disappointed with the result but happy with the many battles, “I’m not happy with the result but I really had fun in the race, a lot of battles,” enthused the 16-year-old Indonesian. “Maybe in 1 lap, 5 changes of position. It was crazy and I enjoyed it a lot. I made a mistake on the 2nd to last lap and a lot of people overtook so I was back a bit. By then my bike was sliding around a lot, I know the other riders said the same but I had a difficult feeling with the rear tyre in the last laps. This is racing, it is what it is and tomorrow I try to be on the podium. Maybe we will make the bike a little harder on the rear, we will talk about it.”

Pedro Acosta

Pedro Acosta picked up the fallen bike to finish 14th after another crash early in the race, with a crash also in qualifying causing some pain in his wrist, “Yesterday in the Qualifying I had a crash and I hurt my wrist a bit so I preferred to take it easy and go a bit slower in the early laps,” stated the 16-year-old Spaniard who clinched the Cup last weekend. “But then Holgado crashed, Muñoz (David) braked a little and I touched Muñoz and fell. Nothing to say, this is racing and sure Dani did not want to crash. Tomorrow we will see for the last race.”

Race 2

Two wins thanks to the two perfect last corner exits by David Muñoz gave the 14-year-old Spaniard a magic last weekend of Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup action for 2020. He repassed fellow countryman Daniel Holgado on the charge to the line with Cup winner Pedro Acosta right in their slipstream, after a Race 1 crash saw him finish the opening bout in 14th.

On Saturday, Muñoz had got the better of Iván Ortolá in exactly the same way and with Ortolá crossing the line 10th today Muñoz matched his score in the Cup points table. This handed the second place Cup medal to Muñoz as he had two wins to Ortolá’s single victory.

David Muñoz

Again it was an incredible 11 rider, race long battle for the lead that went on for the entire 17 laps and the top 9 finishers were covered by 1.5 seconds.

David Muñoz

“The last corner was incredible, David came inside and passed but I had the better line coming out just like yesterday. The bike was great today, I felt very confident, we had more grip than yesterday because the track was a bit warmer. I am so happy to take this double victory and second place in the Cup.”

Daniel Holgado was happy to settle for second in the season’s final race sharing, “I’m happy with this last race,” stated the 15-year-old Spaniard. “I had a good feeling for the bike. Late in the race the rear wheel was sliding quite a lot and I had to be a bit careful with that. I tried everything and went for the lead at the last corner. Braked so late inside David to pass him but he just had the drive coming out and there was nothing I could do. I’m happy that I could finish the championship in this way, on the podium and fighting for the win all the way.”

Daniel Holgado

2020 Champion Pedro Acosta had a challenging weekend, but ended on a high note, on the podium, if not on the top step. “In the end, after Friday’s crash in Qualifying it was a hard weekend,” explained the 16-year-old Spaniard. “The race was so so difficult with the pain in my wrist. In the first 10 laps everything went with the flow, went well. But from lap 10 or 11 it was so so painful. This is racing though and I think that being on the podium like this is the best way to finish the year.”

Iván Ortolá finished 10th, leaving him tied on points with 2020 runner-up Munoz, but that equated to the third step on the championship podium after everything was tallied up, despite both riders finishing on 150-points. “I was a bit unlucky in the first laps, in the group and thinking about the situation in the championship,” explained the 16-year-old Spaniard Ortolá, who finally crossed the line 10th after a last lap tangle with David Alonso who fell. “Towards the end I had a bit of trouble braking. The front was moving around a lot but if I braked earlier many riders would pass me so I had to keep pushing and then I was in trouble running wide. Finally I am happy with third position in the championship… but second would be better…. Next year!”

Acosta wins 2020 MotoGP Rookies Cup | Van Eerde back on podium

Pedro Acosta has clinched the 2020 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Valencia, a round early, with even a crash in Race 1 and no points earnt, not enough to slow his championship efforts.

Pedro Acosta

David Salvador took the Race 1 win from Mario Aji and Australian Billy van Eerde after Alonso, Acosta and Holgado all went down in the lead.

Race 2 saw Daniel Holgado take the win from Acosta and David Munoz, Holgado’s first victory, but second was enough for Acosta to claim the title with a 59-point lead, with only 50-points left to earn at the final round. Unfortunately van Eerde crashed out of Race 2 early on, although he now sits 10th in the overall standings.

Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup

Acosta holds the title with 196-points, while David Alonso is second on 137, with Ivan Ortola third on 124. Holgado and Salvador are fourth and fifth, with plenty of opportunity in the remaining two races for riders to prove themselves, and grab a podium position.

Qualifying

Pedro Acosta put himself in pole position for the home stretch in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. The 16-year-old Spaniard has a handsome points lead but is not slacking off in Valencia. Just 0.067 seconds slower, Daniel Holgado is determined to put him under pressure as is David Salvador who makes it an all Spanish front row of KTM RC 250 Rs.

Mario Aji

Breaking the home country dominance is Mario Aji, the 16-year-old Indonesian, who heads Row 2 after the track dried from the wet free sessions leaving just a few damp patches for Qualifying.  Billy van Eerde meanwhile qualified 14th, after coming to terms with changing conditions, 1.174-seconds off the fastest pace.

Billy van Eerde

“Friday started off wet and cold so FP1 and FP2 were completely wet. Took it easy as it was my first ride back from braking my hand. Qualifying it ended up being dry with a few wet patches here and there. Since it was the first ‘dry’ session of the weekend I was a bit lost at the beginning and took a while to find braking markers and what gears to use and with a short session I ended up 14th on the grid.”

Billy van Eerde

Race 1

David Salvador took victory by 15-seconds over Mario Aji and Billy van Eerde in the opening race of the weekend, but only after three of the leading quartet crashed out when David Alonso moved onto a damp patch to avoid Salvador’s rear wheel, highsided and both Pedro Acosta and Daniel Holgado went down with him.

David Salvador

The drying track held a good number of damp patches through the 15 laps and they were not the only fallers in the difficult conditions. None of the top three in the championship chase finished and Salvador’s victory propelled the 16-year-old Spaniard into fourth place in the title chase, with three races to go, including Sunday’s Race 2.

It was a welcome result for Australian Billy van Eerde to step back onto the podium, taking it easy early in the race to be ready for a late push, which proved to be a smart strategy with damp patches catching many riders out.

Billy van Eerde

“Race 1 was similar conditions to qualifying with a few more wet patches around here and there and the sun in our eyes which made it difficult to see them. Took it easy at the start then mid race got to the front of the group I was in and started to push and had some decent times for the conditions. A few crashes happened ahead of me and I ended up finishing on the podium in third which was a nice surprise. It has been such a difficult year with injuries and it’s great to be back. By the end of the race my lap times were not so different to the guys at the front and it has given me a lot of confidence so I am really looking forward to the last three races starting with tomorrow.”

Billy van Eerde

Race 2

An intense three-way battle for the win was settled only at the final corner of Race 2, in favour of Daniel Holgado over Pedro Acosta and David Muñoz. It gave 15-year-old Spaniard Holgado his first Cup victory, while the 2020 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup title went to 16-year-old Acosta, despite two races being yet to run.

Pedro Acosta – 2020 MotoGP Rookies Cup Champion

“It was a really good race because after the crash yesterday I was thinking about the championship. I got a good start but David and Dani came with me and we could get away. They were both riding really well, very fast today. I was happy that it was just the three of us and then I forgot about the Cup and tried to win the race. Today, Dani was so so fast and I couldn’t win but I am happy with the championship. We didn’t have any dry practice so the bike setting wasn’t good, we can improve it for sure for next weekend but I’m not complaining, I’m happy with the race. It means so much to me to win the Rookies Cup because when I joined the Cup last year I had no other bike to ride and this has given me the chance to show what I can do.”

Pedro Acosta

It was an all Spanish podium with 14-year-old Muñoz just nine-thousandths of a second behind at the line. The Cup points aren’t that close as Acosta ended the first Valencia weekend 59 points clear of David Alonso with only 50 on offer in the finale next weekend. Alonso, the 14-year-old Colombian did put in another fine ride, taking fourth after a great fight back from his 13th place grid position.

Daniel Holgado

“I am so happy with my first victory in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. I had a really good feeling with the bike and I knew that I could race with Pedro all the way. I planned the last lap because I knew I had a good chance at the last corner and it worked out perfectly. The bike setting wasn’t perfect because we didn’t have dry practice and the rear was sliding quite a lot but I had a good feeling for it so it was OK, I could control it.”

Daniel Holgado

Billy van Eerde came together with another rider in the first lap, with four riders crashing, in a disappointing end to the Australian’s weekend, after a strong showing in Race 1.

Billy van Eerde

“Race 2 was completely dry and I was really looking forward to it. On the first lap in Turn 2 another rider and I touched and four of us ended up going down which was disappointing! Anyway I’m all good and looking forward to next weekend.”

Van Eerde returns from injury with 6-7 at Aragon MotoGP Rookies

2020 MotoGP Rookies Cup

Round 2 – Motorland Aragon

The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup returned to racing over the weekend at Aragon, with Australian Billy Van Eerde back on track after breaking his femur and making a strong return. A crash in free practice wasn’t the best start to the weekend, however when racing commenced Van Eerde was starting from P9. Despite some early set backs in the opening race, he fought his way back from 17th to a sixth place finish, and followed up with seventh in Race 2.

Van Eerde now sits ninth in the standings, with Pedro Acosta continuing to lead the championship.

Billy Van Eerde

“The weekend started off with a crash after only four laps in FP1 which wasn’t ideal, luckily I was ok. FP2 and Qualifying went quite well getting my feeling back on the bike in FP2 and then putting together a decent lap in qualifying to manage P9. Race 1 I made a few big mistakes and dropped to 17th but fought back to finish P6 after a nice battle with some of the other guys. Race 2 I got an OK start but after a few laps I lost some confidence in the front after a few moments but managed it throughout the race to finish in P7 after another race-long battle. My leg was good after a few painkillers, I just have to put more effort in than normal changing down the gears and for changes of direction. Everyday it’s improving so I’m looking forward to pushing more next weekend to try and get in the front group.”

Billy now has five race meetings over the next five weekends between Red Bull Rookies and the CEV series.

Qualifying

Leading the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and leading the times when it counted on Friday at Motorland Aragón, Pedro Acosta was setting a very high standard. The Spanish 16-year-old second year Rookie was chased hard by fellow countryman Daniel Holgado, while David Alonso, the 14-year-old Colombian completed the front row.

Pedro Acosta

David Munoz was fourth fastest in qualifying, Zonta van den Goorge fifth, and David Salvador completed the second row. Izan Guevara lead the third row from Matteo Bertelle, with Aussie Billy Van Eerde qualifying ninth, returning from injury.

Race 1

Pedro Acosta could hardly improve on the four straight wins that started the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Austria but he managed to do exactly that over 15 thrilling laps of Aragón in Race 1. The 16-year-old Spaniard could not break free at Spielberg but he achieved that superbly in his first race at home at Aragon.

It was the same hungry challengers fighting it out and chasing him all the way again with Daniel Holgado leading Iván Ortolá across the line for an all Spanish podium.

It looked from the start like a repeat of the Austrian races with a pack swapping places at every turn. Acosta tried to break away early but couldn’t, Holgado particularly hung on grimly to the #37 KTM RC 250 R.

Pedro Acosta

“I started from pole but you know, really this means nothing. What was important is that at about lap 8 when the tyre performance went down I could still keep the lap time. That was what gave me the break so I could open up a gap. I kept it smooth and kept the lap time. It will be difficult to manage that again tomorrow but I will try. The track condition was not the same as yesterday, the temperature was down I think and the grip not as good but my bike is working well in all conditions and I also prepared myself for this.”

Pedro Acosta
Pedro Acosta

David Salvador just fell short this time and missed out on a podium place over the last 2 laps after battling all the way. David Alonso, the 14-year-old Colombian had a brilliant ride with two ‘penalties’ on his way to 5th.

18-year-old Australian Billy Van Eerde made a great comeback from injury and breaking his femur, claiming sixth despite some conservative riding.

Billy Van Eerde

“It was a difficult race, the first race back after breaking my femur. I was being a bit conservative about that because I didn’t want to crash. But no, it was a good race. At the beginning I made a mistake and dropped back to 17th and in the end I got back to 6th so for the first race back after injury I’m quite happy with it.”

Billy van Eerde

Race 2

Pedro Acosta cranked it up a notch for Race 2. The 16-year-old Spaniard charged away on Lap 1 leaving the chasing pack to wonder what happened, creating a 5-second gap by the time the finish flags were waved.

The excitement was still there though for the minor podium positions, which saw a fantastic seven rider contest for second with riders frequently rubbing fairings.

Acosta celebrated a clear victory as the other places were sorted out at the last corner.

Pedro Acosta

“I think there was no difference really in the bike today, the temperature was a little different but not much. The difference was that last night I was talking with my helper Paco (Francisco Marmol Oliva) and he told me that I had to make a good start and break the group in the first lap. I did it and I want to thank the group around me, it is only they that understand how hard we work to achieve these things. Going fast on the first lap is not easy but talking with the Rookies Cup team and those close to me we discussed that I must finish the warm up lap with speed and be mentally ready and focused to be fast at the start. It worked.”

Pedro Acosta
Pedro Acosta

Daniel Holgado and David Muñoz touched and crashed coming onto the finish while David Alonso took second. Izan Guevara crossed the line third but lost his podium place to Iván Ortolá for exceeding track limits on the last lap.

Holgado leads David Munoz

David Salvador picked up fifth ahead of Daniel Muñoz who had served a long lap penalty with five laps to go.

Australian Billy Van Eerde was a position back from his Race 1 result, in seventh, racing Zonta van den Goord to the finish line and coming out victorious by just 0.011-seconds.
