Curtiss Psyche aims at Harley LiveWire electric

Esoteric American motorcycle company Curtiss Motorcycles has unveiled a third electric motorcycle concept called Psyche to compete against Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire.

The company is already taking orders for the wild Zeus electric motorcycle with radial “V8” batteries and has released plans for the even wilder Hades with a bullet-shaped battery and motor.

They say these will go into production next year and cost $US75,000 (about $A106,000).

Now they have released plans for the more affordable Pysche priced at $US30,000 which is just a few bucks more than the Harley LiveWire.

There are no tech details yet on the Psyche, but Zeus and Hades will have 201hp (150kW) of power and 199Nm of torque.

That is far more than the $US29,799 (about $A42,500) Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire at 78kW and 116Nm.

Curtiss has also released no details of the Psyche’s range, while the LiveWire has 235km of city range and 150km on the highway.

Psyche shot at Harley

CEO Matt Chambers says the Psyche is “a clean shot at Harley, exposing the hollow seemingly cynical nature of their EV effort, their own CEO (Matt Levatich) referring to their rather commodity looking Livewire example as a catalyst for their petrol line”.

“Curtiss is the precise hard knock-out punch he didn’t see coming,” he says.

“He (Harley’s boss) is way too big and spread way too thin. The volumes will be too low for the next five years.

“We have out-planned them, out-designed them, out-engineered them, out-branded them and out-promoted them.

“The market is very small, ideally suited to our core competencies, skillsets and bandwidth. We have the experience and collaborative relationships to ideally grow with this market. Harley does not.”

Despite his rhetoric, their first electric motorcycle prototype Zeus is only now entering pre-production stage, while the Hades is still just life-like drawings.

The LiveWire is now available in North America and Europe, but will not be available in Australia until late next year.

Harley-Davidson Australia spokesman Keith Waddell says the “US/European markets have had strong pre-order activity in the lead-up to the release”.

“For ANZ we have not moved into the pre-order phase just yet, however we have heard that some dealers are already receiving request to order, which is great given we are 13-14 months out,” he says.

“We don’t have exact timeframes for when units will be delivered into market however we are working to the normal model year release cadence.”

Have your say on regulating driver distraction

Technology has outpaced road rules on driver distraction, leaving the current rules inadequate, difficult to police and confusing as they vary between state boundaries.

So, in the wake of a recent national summit on driver distraction, the National Transport Commission is calling for public input to tighten the rules.

Rather than seeking a technological solution, such as some method of switching off mobile phones and other devices when vehicles are in motion, they are investigating non-technological solutions.

The NTC has released a consultation regulation impact statement (RIS) seeking feedback on technology-neutral options to regulate driver distraction. Submissions close on 4 September 2019. Suggested solutions will be presented to state transport ministers in May 2020.

Driver distraction problems

The current national rules date back to 1999, when texting and calling were the most common features of a mobile phone.

Now drivers are updating their social media and even taking selfies while driving!Selfies new scourge of road deathsHave your say on regulating driver distraction

The current rules only preclude or limit the use of specific technology devices – mobile phones, visual display units and television receivers – while permitting their use as driver and rider aids.

However, distraction is not isolated to mobile phones and other portable devices, but also the growth of built-in car screens that include internet connection to apps that can distract drivers.

Another problem with current rules is that they are difficult to police.

One police officer told me they can have difficulty proving that a driver was holding a phone and not using voice commands.

Other problems include the differences between states in rules which allow or prohibit motorists to touch, cradle or hold devices. Motorists are left confused about the legalities of using their devices.

Distraction risks

Riders are all too aware of the problems with distracted drivers not looking for motorcycles.

The NTC says distraction is seen as “a significant road safety risk that is not as well understood as other risk factors such as drink-driving and speeding”.

And while 79% of people agree that talking on a mobile phone while driving is dangerous, 21% still illegally use mobile phones for browsing the internet, taking photos, texting and accessing apps.

Studies have found that a task which takes a driver’s ‘eyes off the road’ for as little as two seconds can be particularly hazardous.

The NTC also cites studies that suggest the young and less experienced drivers as well as older drivers are the biggest problems.

They say young drivers lack driving skills to allow them to execute a secondary non-driving task, while older people find it difficult to share attention between two simultaneous tasks.

In Australia, distraction is a factor in 16% of injury crashes and a 2017 WA preliminary summary found that 28 fatalities (17%) were from inattention-related crashes, up more than 100% on the previous five-year average.

Top Motorcycle Chain Lubes

If you’re going to clean, lubricate, and protect a motorcycle chain, you might as well buy a product that does all three. The Maxima Ultimate Chain Care Kit includes all the products you need to maintain the chain. The cleaner strips gunk without harming the rubber seals of O/X/Z-ring-type chains. Multi-Purpose Penetrant Lube oils it, and the chain wax seals it from moisture. This is the total motorcycle chain care package.

During the summer break, it was confirmed that the aforementioned Lorenzo will sit out the Czech GP, as well as the Austrian GP, after his injury sustained in Assen. So, that means HRC test rider Stefan Bradl gets another runout on the Repsol Honda after a more than respectable P10 display on home turf at the Sachsenring.

Back from the break: stern tyre test awaits in Brno

It’s a track that provides a stern test for man, machine and the tyres as Brno features constant changes of elevation, hard-braking zones, fast sweeping corners and acceleration areas. With these factors in mind, the soft, medium and hard Michelin Power Slicks will be symmetrical in design, while the rears will have an asymmetric finish, with a harder right-hand-side to cope with eight corners that go in that direction.
