2020 Yamaha Tricity 300 | 300cc three-wheel scooter

2020 Yamaha Tricity 300

Yamaha launched their Tricity 125 three-wheeler back in 2014, introducing the brand’s first ‘Leaning Multi-Wheel vehicle’ and evolving into the more powerful Tricity 155 more recently. Now for 2020 Yamaha have announced the Tricity 300, a mid-range option that sits above the Tricity 155, but well below their full sports-touring three-wheel motorcycle – the Niken.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS STA
2020 Yamaha Tricity 300

The Tricity offers excellent stability thanks to a dual front-wheel setup, built around the LMW Ackerman suspension/steering system, without compromising lean angle. Combined with  the easy-going automatic nature of a scooter TriCity make for an ideal commuter.

The Tricity 300 also offers the benefit of being able to be ridden on a car licence in some countries, although this isn’t the case in Australia, however we can assume the Tricity 300 will be LAMS legal, as the XMAX 300 is, and the Tricity will no doubt weigh in a little heaiver than the XMAX.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS ACT
2020 Yamaha Tricity 300

2020 Yamaha Tricity 300 features

  • Yamaha-exclusive Leaning Multi-Wheel (LMW) technology (three-wheeler)
  • Tilt Lock Assist system
  • Blue Core – liquid-cooled 4-stroke SOHC 300 cc 4-valve single-cylinder
  • Storage for 2 full-face helmets
  • LED lights and large LCD instruments
  • Convenient Smart Key operation
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • 267 mm brake rotors, ABS and Unified Brake System
  • Parking brake
  • Large 14-inch wheels

Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW) technology

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
Yamaha’s Tricity goes larger capacity in 2020 with a 300cc version

The LMW Ackerman suspension/steering system features a parallelogram link and cantilevered front suspension with the dual fork tubes mounted on the inner face of the front wheels. This layout gives agile and confident handling together with enhanced feelings of stability when riding on slippery or uneven surfaces.

The LMW steering mechanism contributes towards the machine’s easy and user friendly character by giving a generous 72° of steering angle, making the Tricity 300 manoeuvrable in congested traffic and tight spaces. A full 130mm of ground clearance means the machine can handle uneven surfaces and avoid being grounded out when being pushed over kerbs while parking.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS ACT
The dual-wheel setup offers increased stability and confidence in slippery commuter conditions

Having two front wheels offers the benefits of additional front-end traction and braking power thanks to a wide 470mm front wheel-track, with a balanced and planted character when steering and cornering.

The Tricity 300 will be ideally suited to both new riders and those riders coming over to three-wheels from conventional scooter or motorcycle, with a focus on the new generation of riders with no experience on two or three wheels looking for an easy entry-point.

2020 Tricity 300 chassis

The Tricity 300 features a 1590 mm wheelbase combined with optimised steering geometry and a 470 mm front wheel track, which combined with a front-rear weight distribution of around 50:50 with a rider on board – ensure a great chassis balance and lightweight feeling.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS STA
The Tricity 300 has a 1590mm wheelbase, with 450mm front wheel track

The newly designed frame is constructed with small-diameter tubing offering a balance of strength and rigidity – while plates are used around the head pipe area to help provide feel when steering and cornering.

In order to reduce any feelings of vibration to a minimum, the engine is mounted to the new lightweight frame using a linked type system.

The Tricity 300 is also equipped with matching 14-inch wheels at both the front and rear, larger than those fitted to much of the competition which increases stability even further.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
14-inch wheels offer a host of benefits, including at higher speeds, with specially developed Bridgestone rubber fitted

These lightweight larger diameter wheels and specially developed wide-section Bridgestone tyres offer a number of advantages, including high levels of traction, durability and wet weather performance, together with a smooth ride and confident road holding.

The use of large diameter 267 mm discs on all three wheels give greater braking power and control on a wide variety of road surfaces.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS ACT
267mm rotors are found on each of the three wheels, with a Unified Braking System and ABS

A commuter can encounter everything from tram lines and cobbles through to poorly maintained roads and diesel spills, but with a stable three-wheel configuration and high-specification brakes, the Tricity 300 is ready to tackle the all the commuting challenges.

As well as being equipped with ABS to prevent accidental wheel lock ups on loose or slippery surfaces, the Tricity 300 also features Yamaha’s Unified Braking System that balances braking force to all three wheels.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
2020 Yamaha Tricity 300

Yamaha’s Unified Braking System ensures when the rider applies only the rear brake – either through the left handlebar lever or via the foot brake – braking force is applied to the front and rear wheels.

When both the front and rear brakes are applied at the same time the braking force applied to the front wheels is a combination of input from both levers; and when the front brake lever is applied on its own, only the front brakes are activated.

Tricity 300 styling & storage

The Tricity design incorporates styling cues from Yamaha’s XMAX and TMAX sport scooters – as well as a touch of DNA from the Niken – Yamaha’s three-wheel sport tourer motorcycle.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
Generous underseat storage will fit two helmets on the Tricity 300

A compact and aerodynamic front cowl is slimmer and higher than other designs in the category. Tricity 300’s short and relatively narrow nose leaves an open space between the twin front wheels to emphasise this feature.

There’s a large storage space under the seat that can accommodate two full-face helmets or one full-face helmet and an A4-sized briefcase, and the compartment is fitted with internal LED lighting.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
A oarking brake is also fitted to the Tricity for ease of parking

A parking brake secures the machine when not being ridden, while the fuel tank and seat locks can be easily released with the push of a button – and there’s also a DC outlet in the front panel for charging and powering various devices.

300cc Blue Core engine

The Tricity 300 is driven by Yamaha’s latest Blue Core engine, a liquid-cooled four-stroke SOHC 300cc four-valve single-cylinder engine used by the XMAX 300 and incorporates a number of features to suit the unique requirements of the new Tricity.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS ACT
The Blue Core 300cc powerplant has been further optimised for the Tricity 300

For strong acceleration, fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness, the Tricity 300 runs with revised fuel injector mapping settings, and the 12-hole injector features an optimised spray angle that increases combustion efficiency for strong low to mid-range torque, particularly important with a heavier three-wheeler compared to the more conventional XMAX.

Horsepower losses are reduced by the use of a semi-dry sump lubrication system and the Tricity 300 is equipped with a one-piece forged crankshaft.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS STA
2020 Yamaha Tricity 300

To achieve a high level of combustion efficiency the shape of the combustion chamber and intake port is also optimised while the lightweight DiASil offset cylinder is equipped with a durable forged piston.

2020 Tricity 300 electronics & tech

Using the new Tricity 300 is convenient thanks to its Smart Key system. As long as the rider has the Smart Key with them, they can carry out all of the main operations via the main switch.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
A smart key system allows control of the bike without manually inserting a key, alongside an LCD display

Along with the three-wheel layout and the enhanced control offered by the ABS and a Unified Braking system, a Traction Control System (TCS) adds another layer of safety to the Tricity 300.

The Tricity 300’s LCD instruments provide all the relevant information in a clear and easy to understand display. There’s a large digital speedometer as well as a bar-type tachometer, clock, odometer, tripmeter and more – and ln the outer edges of the panel the rider can see the indicator lights showing ABS, Tilt Lock Assist system status, TCS and ambient air temperature – with a warning light coming on at 3ºC and lower.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS ACT
Traction control is also standard fitment on the Tricity 300 offering an additional safety benefit

The Tricity 300 also features a Tilt Lock Assist system that provides extra convenience by helping the machine to remain upright when stopped.

This system features a caliper and brake disc that are mounted onto the LMW mechanism’s upper parallelogram arm. When the Tilt Lock Assist system is activated, the caliper’s compact electric actuator pushes the pads onto the disc and locks the parallelogram linkage in place.

As soon as the Tricity 300 throttle is opened the Tilt Lock Assist system disengages automatically, enabling the rider to ride away.

Yamaha Tricity MW EU BNS DET
A Tilt Lock Assist system also helps keep the bike upright at a standstill automatically

The Tricity 300’s Tilt Lock Assist system is completely separated from the suspension functions, making it easier and more comfortable when pushing the Tricity 300 forwards or backwards when parking and also makes it easier when placing the vehicle on its main stand.

Australian availability and pricing is yet to be announced.

Metzeler Introduces Four New Tires For 2020

Sport tires, touring tires, race tires, even scooter tires are new from Metzeler!

Begin press release:

METZELER, always at the forefront of research and technological innovation, announces that, in 2020, it will broaden its range with four new tire models. SPORTEC™ M9 RR, ROADTEC™ 01 SE, RACETEC™ TD Slick and ROADTEC™ Scooter are the new products strengthening the brand’s range in their relative segments.

SPORTEC M9 RR

SPORTEC™ M9 RR is the successor of the multiple award-winning SPORTEC™ M7 RR, which is still considered a benchmark in the Supersport segment. ROADTEC™ 01 SE represents the evolution of ROADTEC™ 01, available in radial sizes for owners of naked, supersport and sport-touring bikes who are looking for improved handling and sportier performance. RACETEC™ TD Slick is a new slick tire for track-day lovers and club racers. Finally, ROADTEC™ Scooter, the chosen heir of the FEELFREE™ family, is designed for urban mobility, commuting and sport-touring use typical of the ROADTEC™ product family.

SPORTEC™ M9 RR is without a doubt the most keenly awaited release for all supersport riders who have had the chance to appreciate the already excellent experience offered by the SPORTEC™ M7 RR, with SPORTEC™ M9 RR bringing further performance improvements across the board. SPORTEC™ M9 RR, as you may guess from the name, has a strong connection to its predecessor and its roots. The name SPORTEC™ identifies the range of sports road tires designed for day-to-day use and to guarantee a great riding experience, safety and versatility. RR stands for Road Racing and immediately brings to mind the iconic Isle of Man TT competition, won this year by champion Dean Harrison on METZELER tires. Road racing competitions bring to mind not only performance but also the typical characteristics associated with the use of road bikes, which generally include unpredictable weather and road-surface conditions. This is the concept behind the claim for the new product, “Ride the Unexpected.”

SPORTEC™ M9 RR perfectly combines the typical versatility of day-to-day use with the brand’s competitive experience in road racing, building on the important legacy of the SPORTEC™ M7 RR, a tire that boasts an impressive list of awards and recognitions. This is completed with the most recent technological advances from the German brand’s research and development pursuits.

One of the most pervasive innovations in motorcycle technology from the introduction of the SPORTEC™ M7 RR has been the development of electronic rider-assist technology, supported by sophisticated sensors that offer riders greater security, regardless of the type of motorcycle. In this context, tires play a fundamental role in allowing the electronics to interpret the true behavior of the vehicle and calibrate it to offer the best riding experience and optimum performance. The biggest challenge for the METZELER Research and Development Center was to adapt the dynamic performance of the SPORTEC™ M9 RR to a wide range of motorcycles, allowing electronic rider assistance systems to function properly.

SPORTEC™ M9 RR has been designed for motorcyclists, primarily owners of supersport and naked bikes, with a sporty riding style and who use their bikes almost every day in conditions from the urban jungle to the winding weekend roads. These riders are looking for improved performance and want a great riding experience with sporty performance even in wet conditions, but also with the option to take their bike on the track as well. These riders need a sports tire that provides precise and reliable feedback while they enjoy their bike’s performance.

The full SPORTEC™ M9 RR range includes 3 front and 9 rear tires sizes.

ROADTEC 01 SE

Following the success of the multiple award-winning ROADTEC™ 01 that debuted in 2015 for the sport-touring tire segment, METZELER has decided to introduce the new ROADTEC™ 01 SE.

The ROADTEC™ 01 SE radial range completes METZELER’s catalog, consolidating the strengths of the ROADTEC™ 01 – with its exceptional performance in wet conditions and high mileage – and enhancing the sporty characteristics in terms of the grip and agility needed by supersport, naked and sport-touring riders.

To meet sports requirements that imply high performance at sharp lean angles, the tread design for the ROADTEC™ 01 SE builds on that of the ROADTEC™ 01, with an evolution towards a tire with a slicker shoulder, optimizing drive with a greater surface area coming into contact with the asphalt.

The front models of the ROADTEC™ 01 SE inherit the latest version of the full-silica compound used for the ROADTEC™ 01 and feature the same tread pattern in the middle section, a key aspect of its exceptional grip on low-friction surfaces. The shoulders are slicker, and the relative structural refinement optimizes performance through half and full lean, improving agility and steering stability.

The rear models of the ROADTEC™ 01 SE use a bi-compound and, as with the front, feature a sportier evolution of the ROADTEC™ 01 tread pattern, aimed at offering greater drive at sharper lean angles together with comfort and driving pleasure capable of satisfying even the most demanding riders, both on long routes and winding roads. ROADTEC™ 01 and ROADTEC™ 01 SE: two products perfect for any adventurer with a sports attitude.

RACETEC TD Slick

RACETEC™ TD Slick joins the range of METZELER™ racing slick tires, dedicated to riders and club racers with a focus on competition and training use.

RACETEC™ TD Slick is a slick tire for the track that is quick and easy to use. It can also be used without tire warmers and does not require any special bike set-up to offer optimal performance. The key features of the RACETEC™ TD Slick include optimal performance, uniformity of yield even after several sessions, versatility for different track surfaces and operating temperatures, high resistance to abrasion and the option to reverse the direction of rotation of the rear tires between sessions if the circuit configuration generates more wear on one side.

RACETEC™ TD Slick has been designed for riders that want the advantages of a slick product but without the need for additional racing equipment (stands, tire warmers, generators, etc.) or a highly tuned bike set-up and suspension, as are normally needed with slick racing tires.

RACETEC™ TD Slick is therefore aimed at all riders who do not want to go without slick tires on the track, expert riders who want a plug-and-play product for long free sessions, and club riders who need a tire with endurance mileage and an excellent quality/price ratio that allows them to focus on improving lap times for the entire race weekend.

The new tire will be available in four sizes at 17 inches: 120/70 front and 180/55, 190/55 and 200/55 rear.

ROADTEC Scooter

ROADTEC™ Scooter is the new tire developed by METZELER for all types of scooters with wheels from 10 to 16 inches. ROADTEC™ Scooter boasts extreme flexibility and versatility, meets the broadest range of weather, temperature and road-surface conditions, in urban areas and beyond.

The development of the ROADTEC™ Scooter naturally took inspiration from the ROADTEC™ 01, while optimizing its features for scooter use. The full range includes 51 sizes, and ROADTEC™ Scooter will gradually replace the current METZELER catalog, including FEELFREE™, FEELFREE™ WINTEC and ME 7 TEEN™, with a single product offering optimum performance.

More specifically, ROADTEC™ Scooter, compared to the products it will replace, guarantees greater grip on wet and low-friction surfaces, along with use under a greater range of temperatures and improved handling.

The tread design of this new tire is directly based on the ROADTEC™ 01, specifically developed to allow the use of a system partially based on siping. The primary benefits of this help with warm-up and comfort, as the siping contributes to the deformability of the tread, and first-class grip on low-friction surfaces, guaranteed by the recognizable ROADTEC™ 01 groove pattern.

Compared to its predecessors, ROADTEC™ Scooter features a rounder profile to increase the tread contact area, and a more rigid structure to support the profile and improve handling.

Finally, the ROADTEC™ Scooter compounds feature a high percentage of silica for greater control in wet conditions and use at a greater range of temperatures. All ROADTEC™ Scooter rear radial tires use a bi-compound.

Kawasaki supercharges Bimota Tesi H2

Kawasaki is supercharging Bimota which it recently bought with the launch of the Tesi H2 powered by their H2 supercharged 998cc inline four.

Not only is it propelled by the stonking supercharged H2 engine, but there is a fair bit of H2 in the “origami” design.

It follows the release last week of Kawasaki’s fourth model in the H2 range, the naked Z H2.

Kawasaki Z H2 - Bimota
Kawasaki Z H2

Tesi H2

There is no word yet on price for the limited-edition Tesi H2.Bimota Tesi H2ension

However, you can bet it will be eye-wateringly expensive being fettled with Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, plenty of carbon fibre and CNC machined bits and pieces.

As a guide, the current Ducati-powered Tesi 3D EVO is $A50,890 and the Tesi 3D Naked is $55,990.

Bimota Tesi 3D
Bimota Tesi 3D

That’s a lot more than the current Kawasaki H2 at $29,290, H2 SX SE at $34,999 or the Carbon version at $40,400.

Bimota is also not releasing a lot of technical details, although we can see they are continuing with their front swingarm instead of conventional forks.Bimota Tesi H2

But most significantly, the power figure is missing.

Kawasaki’s track-only H2R has 240kW of power, the H2 is set at 170kW and the SX SE and new naked are both 147kW.

We tip it will be somewhere between the H2 and H2R.

The current Tesi 3D models are powered by a 1078cc Ducati air-cooled engine from the old Monster 1100 which only outputs 78kW.Bimota Tesi H2

Bimota history

Bimota has worked with Kawasaki before, using their engines and we expect the new ownership arrangement to result in more collaborative models.

The Italian boutique manufacturer was founded in 1973 in Rimini, Italy by Valerio Bianchi, Giuseppe Morri, and Massimo Tamburini who designed the beautiful Ducati 916 and equally elegant MV Agusta F4.

They have also had relationships other motorcycles manufacturers such as Ducati and the other Japanese manufacturers.

Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson Takes Battle Of The Kings Glory

Laidlaw Harley-Davidson wins against global competition.

Begin press release:

Following an intense global competition, including national and international heats, Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson has today been crowned Global Custom Kings and overall winners of the 2019 Battle of the Kings.

Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson’s winning entry, the stunning “FXGTS Coast Glide” is based on a Harley-Davidson Sport Glide model and has been extensively customized to create a truly unique ride. The bike is a throwback to FXRT styling with a Southern California twist, paying tribute to the Pacific Coast Highway and the Southern California influence on modern performance cruisers. As a concept, it covers a lot of ground. As a design, it’s far more than the sum of its parts. The team wanted full functionality but with a strong California flair.

Battle of the Kings is the world’s largest dealer custom build-off competition. The competition showcases the very best in customization capability and the creativity of the Custom Kings who can be found at every Harley-Davidson dealership globally. In 2018, the Custom King crown was taken by debut-entrants Harley-Davidson Bangkok with their Street Bob-based build “The Prince”.

For 2019 any model in the Harley-Davidson range could be selected as a base for the build (excluding Trike and CVO models) meaning dealers had more choice than ever before in order to create a title challenger. To further inspire the competition dealers had to choose from three style categories – Dirt, Chop and Race – for their build. The rules for the build were simple – 50 percent of the parts used must be genuine Harley-Davidson accessories and the customization budget was a maximum of 50 percent of the donor bike retail price.

The United States dealers added an extra dimension to their competition, inspiring the next generation of custom builders by teaming each build with a trade school, with students working alongside the dealership team to create and build their machine.

Grand final runners-up were Warr’s Harley-Davidson, The Crook (United Kingdom), Thunderbike Harley-Davidson, Roar (Germany), Calgary Harley-Davidson, Moonshine (Canada) and Harley-Davidson Queretaro, Joe Tracker (Mexico) – whose machines were all on display at EICMA for the tense final voting.

“Once again the global Harley-Davidson dealership community has excelled at demonstrating their custom leadership. This expertise is accessible at any Harley-Davidson dealership, allowing riders around the world to truly make their ride unique. Huge congratulations to all of our over 300 entries, the regional winners and finalists – and especially to our 2019 champions Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson. A truly stunning build – and a worthy champion,” said Steve Lambert, International Marketing Director, Harley-Davidson.

For me to get the opportunity to be back with Honda and, most importantly, as an official rider with HRC back in the championship with a factory team, is like a dream come true” said Leon Haslam. “It’s so exciting to be involved in the project and already I’m thinking about when I can ride the bike and get to Phillip Island, one of my favourite tracks, for the first race. I can’t wait to ride the CBR1000RR-R. A new bike means that we’re looking at a big challenge of course, but the project is extremely professional, and we all know what Honda and HRC are capable of. What they have achieved in the racing world speaks for itself. It’s really a fantastic opportunity for me, and I’m ready to give it my all, for the team, the company and all our fans around the world”.

Full details of the HRC Official WorldSBK team will be announced at the team launch before the start of the 2020 WorldSBK season.

Walcha Motorcycle Weekend revs up

The Walcha Motorcycle Weekend revs up from tomorrow (15-17 November 2019) to replace the Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles and national Harley Owners Group (HOG) rally which were axed at the last minute.

Among the many highlights will be the chance for riders to hear Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire electric motorcycle and even go for a “demo ride” on their Jumpstart Experience.

Harley-Davidson Australia spokesman Keith Waddell says they have been “working closely with Walcha Council to support their plans to host riders with music and food options over the weekend”.

The company will set up at the Walcha Showground and will run demo rides over the weekend.

Meanwhile, he says the liquidators of the two axed events are “working through the required processes on asset and refund retrieval for all involved”.

“As this process may take some time, Harley-Davidson will refund the $99 HOG ticket cost directly to members,” he says.

“All HOG ticket holders have been contacted directly to arrange those refunds.”

The liquidators have not yet provided any details on refunds for Freak Show ticket holders.

There is a host of other entertainment across the three days, including stunt shows, a rodeo, guided rides, Harley demo rides, a Steampunk motorcycle gallery, markets, music, food stalls, a billy cart derby show and shine and more.

Of course, one of the main attractions is simply getting there by riding Thunderbolts Way and/or the magnificent Oxley Highway.

All accommodation in town is fully booked so Council has organised for camping at the Oxley Sportsground.

There will be some conditions due to current water restrictions.

Local not-for-profit groups will provide basic catering onsite and clean-up services.

Walcha Royal Cafe owner Toni Keable says they will continue with the entertainment they had previously planned before the events were axed.

“People can be assured that this weekend will definitely go ahead,” she says.

“Everyone is positive and we’re not going to let this opportunity to showcase the town slip through our fingers.”Walcha

Liquidation

The original twin events were organised by Inside Line Events International which was behind the aborted TT events planned for either the Oxley Highway or the Sunshine Coast.

Freak Show Festival organiser David Rollins sent us this formal statement:

The organisers of the Freak Show Festival of motorcycles regret to inform that the event has been forced into voluntary liquidation due to difficulties maintaining ongoing support from sponsors

The organisers are personally and financially devastated by this outcome, having poured considerable money into the event as well as time.

A liquidator has been appointed. All ticketing and trade enquires should be addressed to Wexted Pty Ltd, Level 12, 28 O’Connell Street, Sydney NSW 2000. E: [email protected]

He says there is “not much I can add to it for legal reasons”.

More than 1000 tickets had been sold and they claimed they were expecting about 5000 to attend.

Freak show

The Freak Show Festival was to include a flat track, a dirt hill climb, custom motorcycles, the Globe of Death, wheelies, stoppies and burnouts, a ride-in cinema playing motorcycle-themed movies, live music and food and beverages.

It was scheduled for one weekend after the Australian Motorcycle Festival (formerly the Sydney Moto Expo) in Wollongong from November 8-10.

The show and rally were also sponsored by NSW Tourism Department who expected it to deliver more than $1.7 million in visitor expenditure to the region.
