Call for free footpath bike parking in Hobart

A vast majority of riders who live in or have visited Hobart would like to see free footpath bike parking as is practised in Melbourne.

According to preliminary results from an ongoing online survey, 85.5% have called for free footpath parking.

All Australian riders are being urged to complete the Hobart motorcycle parking that runs to the end of March 2022.

Click here to take the survey.

Motorcycle Riders Association of Australia would like 1000 riders do the survey.

“They don’t have to be Tasmanians,” spokesman Damien Codognotto says. “They just have to have visited Hobart at some stage.”

There have so far been about 400 responses to the survey, most of whom (70%) aged 51 to 70 and 84.5% are male.

Preliminary results show two out of three respondents are Tasmanians and one in five are Victorians, followed by Queensland with 7% and NSW and SA 2.7%.

About 19% visited Hobart less than once a year, with 29% on holidays and 17.5% visiting for entertainment.

So motorcycle tourism is an obvious drawcard to the city with 90% bringing their own bike, 5% hiring a bike and the others buying a bike in the city.

That is why the MRAA is seeking more interstate respondents.

A whopping 86.9% say there is not enough on-street motorcycle and scooter parking in Hobart and 77.8% say there isn’t enough off-street parking.

Only one in five uses the Hobart City Council’s website map to find bike parking and half of respondents didn’t even know it existed.

More than 90% have also called for more secure bike parking at the airport.

Riders urged to complete Brisbane bike survey

The newly formed  Queensland Motorcycle Council is urging riders to fill out an online survey about motorcycling in Brisbane.

They believe it is important that the survey has a strong response as it will “demonstrate strong support from the motorcycling community” and show that the new group has some clout.

The new group formed this year more than 18 months after the Motorcycle Riders Association of Queensland closed largely due to a lack of support.

President Graham Keys says their discussions with Transport and Main Roads officials had resulted in a promised seat at the table for future relevant government meetings and road safety forums.

Now they want to prove to Brisbane City Council that they are a legitimate rider representative group.

They are encouraging riders to complete the council’s online survey to “help identify opportunities to improve the motorcycling experience in Brisbane”.

The survey will help Council to “identify and develop policies, plans and infrastructure to enable safe motorcycle travel in the city”.

In the past, we have been critical of the council’s motorcycle strategy, but they have been lifting their game with parking in recent years.

Their online survey is open until Monday 28 February 2022 and takes about 10 minutes to complete depending on how much optional information you provide.

Click here to fill in the survey.

A login or subscription is not required to access and participate in the survey. Simply follow the questions as they relate to you and submit your comments.

Council is making all the right noises about motorcycling, finally realising riders may be the answer to the city’s traffic and parking issues.

Here is what they have to say:

Having a connected, flexible and sustainable transport network in Brisbane is important to ensure we can easily commute to work, conduct business and study, access lifestyle and leisure opportunities, and visit family and friends.

People of all ages and abilities, ranging from non-riders to experienced riders, are encouraged to have their say, and we hope to gain as much feedback as we can to ensure any initiatives reflect the needs of the community and provide a positive benefit for our city.

Motorcycling is a key initiative of the Transport Plan for Brisbane – Implementation Plan 2018, and focuses on opportunities for safe, motorcycle travel in the city. Travelling by motorcycle and mopeds, particularly for commuter trips, can assist in managing congestion on our roads and reduce the need for car parking in the CBD and activity centres.

Our vision is for motorcycling to be a transport mode of choice for travelling throughout Brisbane and minor goods transport, with appropriate infrastructure in place to support safe riding for residents, visitors and businesses in Brisbane.

While it’s good to see council acknowledging motorcycling, the survey asks a stupid question about putting on your headlights in the day time!

Aussie electric bikes hit milestone sales

Australia’s first electric motorcycle company, Fonzarelli, has reached the modest milestone of selling 100 of its electric multi-purpose NKD electric motorbikes.

It’s nothing compared with the big motorcycle companies, but this boutique electric motorcycle company is certainly starting to make its name known after launching in late 2019.

FONZ Moto, as it is now called, is now available in all of Australia’s States and Territories.

Their NKD X and NKD S models are locally designed and produced after a move from their original Adelaide production plans back to Redfern in Sydney due to the pandemic.

Founder Michelle Nazzari says the decision to bring our production plans closer to home and ramp up their ‘urban micro factory’ meant they could make up to 20 motorbikes a month.

She says they are now “playing catch-up so we’re now looking to expand to a larger facility in 2022”.

There are two NKD models:

  • NKDs (100km/h top speed, 100km range) from $10,990;
  • NKDx (100km/h top speed, 200km range) from $16,990.

The NKD is powered by a mid-drive brushless motor producing 9.6kW of power and 56Nm of torque.

You can also buy optional fat knobby tyres so it can do some off-road work.

The Panasonic Lithium-Ion 3.5kWh inbuilt battery can be charged via the onboard AC mains charger from flat to 100% in about five hours.

Michelle points out that NSW and the ACT have abolished stamp duty for electric motorcycles and electric scooters this year.

“While we know all states and territories operate slightly differently, it’s encouraging to see growing support for two-wheeled EVs,” she says.

FONZ sources as much as possible from local suppliers within a 200km of their premises to minimise the environmental footprint in the NKD manufacturing process.

“There’s a lot of greenwashing these days. It was important to us to source locally and get the certifications to show that it is possible to manufacture this type of product in Australia,” she says.

Locally-made also means that each bike is custom built to spec and the multi-award winning NKD series has been certified by the Australian Made campaign.

Michelle admits that NKD is not for everyone.

“There are many differing tastes out there but this plucky little beast is certainly turning heads wherever it goes,” she says.

“What’s particularly great is the endorsement we’re getting from people who truly know their stuff when it comes to performance.”

Michelle Nazzari and Adam Kaplan with the NKD S and X models

Former Australian racing car driver, Adam Kaplan, says his NKD is the perfect urban assault vehicle for his lifestyle in Noosa.

“The power delivery makes my pillion and I laugh every time we give it a squirt, and it’s sure footed and stable to ride and I love overtaking unsuspecting vehicles uphill with 2 up,” Adam says.

Kaplan rides the NKD X with a carbon fibre body kit. He wanted the ability to be able to carry his surfboard to the beach so FONZ designed an integrated surf rack system, which later became a popular option for other NKD owners.

KTM Super Duke R EVO unveiled

KTM has added a limited-edition EVO model to its 1290 Super Duke R range with a host of new electronics.

The wild naked R and EVO bikes arrive in Australia and New Zealand in February 2022 in the familiar blue and orange livery plus a new silver and orange.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but expect an increase for the updated electronics on the EVO. Currently the R costs $28,395.

In 2020, the Super Duke R was trimmed down.

Now the EVO arrives with second-generation WP APEX semi-active suspension with three damping modes – Comfort, Street and Sport.

The spring preload of the rear suspension can be set via the TFT display to up to 20mm in 10 steps to allow for rider, pillion and luggage weight.

An optional Suspension Pro package offers three more damping modes: a stiff Track mode, Advanced which allows the rider to select damping in eight levels and Auto which automatically adjusts for rider behaviour.

Suspension Pro also offers three automatic preload auto-levelling settings to adjust the preload automatically to the weight of the rider, pillion and luggage.

In Low mode, it provides a “relaxed, less aggressive, more comfortable geometry, with a lower seat height. Standard mode is a “neutral and balanced geometry” while High is an “aggressive, agile track attack geometry, with a more loaded front end”.

Another optional and switchable feature on Suspension Pro is an anti-diving setting that keeps the front-end high under hard braking.

Ride Vision road safety automated vehicle autonomous riderless dirverless

The 2022 1290 Super Duke R and EVO models retain the Rain, Street and Sports modes with optional Track and Performance settings which provide feedback about what the engine is doing, with less intrusive traction control and anti-wheelie mitigation.

All can be selected without having to stop.

Throttle response has been boosted with the addition of a new quick-turn throttle twist grip, reduced by 7 degrees to 65 degrees.

KTM says this not only offers a faster and more responsive throttle, but also reduces the rider wrist angle as well as the elbow drop at full throttle.

Toby Price biography coming soon

As Aussie Toby Price goes for his third Dakar Rally title in January 2022, book stores across the country will be busy stocking up on his biography.

Endurance: The Toby Price Story is his incredible and inspiring journey from childhood racing prodigy on a remote farm in the Australian bush to the top of the podium in one of the world’s most unforgiving race events and recipient of an OAM at age 33.

Widely renowned for his ‘Bush Mechanic’ persona and one of the most beloved figures in Australian sport today, Toby has overcome many formidable bumps in the road: The death of his adored sister, Min; the tragic loss of mentors and rivals in the desert; countless broken bones and an accident that should have paralysed him for life.

The 34-year-old from Maitland, NSW, has seven Finke wins across bike and car classes, five Hattah Desert Race victories, five Australian Off-Road Championships, and two National Enduro championships.

In 2015, Toby made his first attempt at the soul-destroying, 9000km, 14-day Dakar Rally.

A stage win and an overall podium earned Price a full-time seat on the KTM Factory Red Bull Racing Team.

He now has two Dakar titles, in 2016 and 2019, and sadly crashed out while chasing the lead last year in Saudi Arabia.

He will be back next January aiming for his third title.

Endurance: The Toby Price Story is co-written with Andrew Van Leeuwin and will be published on 1 February 2022.

Andrew is an award-winning journalist who has specialised in motorsport for more than 15 years.

Ride Vision tech now available in Australia

Ride Vision, the first aftermarket hi-tech collision avoidance and warning system, is now available to Australian riders of any type of motorcycle.

The system works by using two small wide-angle cameras mounted on the rear and front of the vehicle.

They transmit footage to Ride Vision’s onboard processing unit, where a patented algorithm is used to detect and notify riders of collision threats in real-time.

They say it gives motorcyclists crucial reaction time to roadway threats which could mean the difference between a collision and coming home safe after every ride.

Ride Vision can be fitted to any Motorcycle or Scooter (design to fit round mirrors coming soon) and comes in two version, Ride Vision Lite ($A895) and a Ride Vision Pro ($A570 plus $US20 monthly subscription for a minimum of 18 months).

Ride Vision Pro includes everything that the Lite version offers as well as periodic upgrades for subscribed users.

Ride Vision Australia spokesman Steven Munitz says it is currently only available in NSW.

“We are looking to sell the system in all states as soon as possible,” says Steven who is seeking people interested in becoming an accredited installer.

He can be contacted via email by clicking here.

The first 10 customers will be able to purchase either a PRO or a LITE system at a 20% discount with the code RIDEVISION20.

Similar systems are used in many cars and several companies are working with motorcycle manufacturers such as Ducati, KTM and BMW to produce similar hi-tech collision avoidance systems and warnings.

However, these are fitted to the bike from new and don’t help riders who already have a motorcycle.

With the rise of autonomous vehicles, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) systems will become a core feature in new vehicles.

Aussies encouraged to get out and ride

The fifth annual Australian Ride Your Motorcycle Week returns this year urging riders to get back on their bikes after lockdown.

Last year, the emphasis went from riding your motorcycle to work to simply riding your bike due to the lockdown meaning many people had to work from home.

It appears that is how the initiative will continue at least for this year’s event from November 29 to December 5, instead of the usual dates in September.

However, the official Facebook page still goes by the ungainly title of “Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week”!

There are already many people riders out and about as lockdowns have lifted recently in several states and more are expected in coming weeks as some inter-state borders open up.

However, we suggest you check each state’s health department websites for details before attempting any border crossings.

For example, riders crossing from NSW to Queensland during Ride Your Motorcycle Week must be fully vaccinated and return a negative COVID 72 hours before the crossing.

Ride your Motorcycle Week will be supported by an advertising campaign reminding riders of the efficiency and ease of riding a bike, as well as promoting riding’s positive impact on mental health.

FCAI Chief Executive and newbie rider Tony Weber says “there’s nothing else like” riding.

FCAI CEO Tony Weber is learning to ride a motorcycle NGK

“But life gets in the way. Ride Your Motorcycle Week is just a little extra push to get your bike serviced ahead of riding season, take the bike to work or take the long way home, take day the off and reconnect or just go and have an adventure. This is the week to start doing it,” he says.

“COVID has obviously changed the way Australians think about commuting, but the name change is about more than acknowledging working from home. The off-road segment has boomed during the last two years, and this is acknowledged in the campaign’s name change.

The event also aims to draw attention to two-wheeled transport as a potential solution in COVID-19 recovery.

“Riding has a real role to play in helping Australia get back to work, offering socially distanced transportation and alleviating congestion and parking issues. As ever, our secondary goal is to capture the attention of policy makers who to often overlook riding in developing transportation infrastructure,” Tony says.

Stay tuned to the campaign at Australian Ride Your Motorcycle Week or on social media www.facebook.com/rideyourmotorcycleweek.

TVS to Launch New Subsidiary for EVs

TVS Motor Co. is one of India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturers, and its current portfolio comprises mainly small-capacity scooters and motorcycles. It also produces the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS. The company has recently invested in EVs, and the first product to emerge from this effort was the TVS iQube electric scooter. Now, Business Standard has reported that the two-wheeler giant is working on launching a subsidiary that will focus on electric vehicles.

Online reports mention that TVS announced in July 2021 that it would be investing $133 million towards developing new all-electric scooter and motorcycle platforms. It said that a total of 6 new models would be launched over the next 2 years. The company also acquired Ego Movement, an e-bike manufacturer from Switzerland, and we’re curious to see what kind of products will come of this.

In a conversation with Autocar Professional, Sudarshan Venu, TVS’s joint MD, said, “We are committed to electrification. We will invest and launch a range of products to really show our commitment and also seek to play a leading role. In two-wheelers (premium segment, scooters) and also three-wheelers (passenger, cargo), we will have the range. Around 500 members of our talented team of engineers are working on this.”

He went on to mention — “With some countries dominating the supply chain, this is an opportunity not to be dependent. We need to plan the electric transition the way it is to our advantage. We need to work and make it happen. Localized supply and renewable power are the keys to ensure the benefit of EV is there for the whole ecosystem,” Venu said.

TVS is also looking to invest an additional $33 million into the new subsidiary. Everything from the conceptualization of the EVs to the development and production will be handled solely by the new subsidiary.

Over the last few years, India has seen a steady rise in promising EV manufacturers. Apart from startups like Ather and Ultraviolette, the big-name manufacturers have also started to produce notable electric scooters and motorcycles. We’re looking forward to what the new TVS subsidiary has in store.

KTM recalls all LC4 models

KTM Australia has recalled all LC4-powered 690 models from 2018 to 2020 over a clutch issue.

Owners have been asked to book their bikes into the workshops of authorised KTM dealers for an inspection and possible free replacement of the clutch slave cylinder.

“Damage to the seal caused by deviations in assembly may impair the function of the clutch slave cylinder,” the official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and says.

“All components of the version with a bellow gasket must therefore be replaced with the  new version without a bellow gasket.

“If the clutch fails to disengage it could result in a loss of motorcycle control increasing the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to the rider and/or passenger or bystanders.”

Customers with affected motorcycles have been advised by letter, but those who have bought the bikes second-hand in a private sale may not yet be aware.

The recall affects 576 motorcycles including the 690 Enduro R and 690 SMC R.

It follows a July recall of KTM motorcycles over an issue with the engine locking.

It’s not been a good year for KTM with four other recalls so far which is more than any other manufacturer.

YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS ON RECALLS

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle and scooter recalls as a service to all riders.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Retro Kawasaki Z900RS coming to Australia

Kawasaki Australia has announced that the handsome retro-styled Z650RS will arrive late this year with pricing closer to the release date.

If the Z900RS is any indication, it will be much more expensive than the Z650 on which it is based. The Z900RS is about $4000 more than the Z900, but does have better suspension.

The Z650RS doesn’t seem to have substantially improved suspension with conventional forks up front.

But it is one of the smartest looking retro models that is also learner approved which should ensure it is a big seller in our market.

Like the Z650, it is powered by the same 649cc twin-cylinder engine that also powers the full-cowling Ninja sports, Z Supernaked models, Versys adventurer and Vulcan S cruiser.

Power is no higher than the 38.7kW of the Z650, otherwise it wouldn’t still be learner approved.

The Z650RS also features the same clever spoke-styled mag wheels of the Z900RS that allow tubeless tyres to be fitted and will come in two colour choices, green or black and silver.Kawasaki Z650RS

Kawasaki says the seat height is 10mm higher than the Z650 at 800mm.

We may also expect there could be a cafe version following with a bikini fairing like the Z900RS.

Let’s hope it also doesn’t have two recalls like the Z90RS!
