Harley-Davidson future in electric bicycles?

The future looks electric for Harley-Davidson with their LiveWire electric motorcycle as well as three pedal-assisted electric bicycles, electric scooter and electric balance bikes for kids.

Harley-Davidson revealed their electric bicycle and electric scooter concepts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

Last month they launched their LiveWire which arrives in Australia next year at more than $A40,000.

Now they have introduced two electric balance bikes for kids and unveiled a photo of three prototype adult-sized pedal-assisted electric bicycles or “e-bikes” on their website.

With Harley sales down and an ageing demographic, the company is keen to bring in new, younger customers.

This shift toward two-wheeled electric bicycles is part of their future-proofing strategy.

The balance bikes are aimed at introducing three-to-seven-year-olds to the bar and shield brand.

The aluminium-framed Irone12 has a seat height of 33cm, weighs just 7.7kg and costs $649 while the Irone16 has a 43cm seat, 8.6kg and costs $US699.

A Harley-Davidson Australia spokesperson says “at this point in time we don’t have any further information on Australian distribution”.

The BMX-style bikes are powered by 20Vmax lithium-ion batteries with up to 60 minutes of charge.

The electric hub motors have three speed-limited drive modes with top speeds of 8km/h-128km/h.

Earlier this year, Harley bought Californian children’s electric bicycle company StaCyc, which stands for “stability cycles”.

They began selling two StaCyc models branded with Harley logos, for the same price as these new balance bikes.

Harley has previously shown their electric mountain bike and now they have unveiled photos of their electric bicycle prototypes under the “Future Vehicles” tab on their website.Harley-Davidson electric bicycle balance kids

It says they are not yet available for sale, but “coming soon” and “future models shown may not be available in all markets”.

They include mid-mounted electric motors, belt drive and one with a step-through “female” frame.

MotoGP 2019

Misano Official MotoGP Test Day 1

Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli set the pace on Day 1 of the Misano Test, the Frenchman’s 1:32.996 in the afternoon enough to pip teammate by just 0.023 and dropping him into the 1:32s.

The Petronas Yamaha SRT duo duo sit over two tenths clear of third-fastest Marc Marquez at the end of the first day of track action, with the reigning Champion the only non-Yamaha in the top five.

On a sunny opening day at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, neither Quartararo nor Morbidelli were testing anything in particular, but they both lit up the timesheets. It was the rookie’s first visit to the venue on a premier class machine so the main aim was to find the best setup for the Grand Prix weekend, with electronics the main goal for Friday. Morbidelli, meanwhile, wanted to test the Michelin tyres to find the best balance, with the aim of improving grip.

Valentino Rossi – Misano MotoGP Test Day 1, 2019

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales were trying a second version of Yamaha’s 2020 engine, having tried a first one at the Brno Test. Viñales and Rossi finished fourth and fifth respectively to place all four Yamahas inside the top five.

The Iwata factory rolling out a different exhaust, similar to Suzuki’s double exhaust setup, as well as a carbon swingarm and a carbon cover on the front brake. ‘The Doctor’ had three bikes in his garage, while Viñales was out testing the front aero that was seen in Brno and the new tail unit we also saw in Czechia.

Championship leader Marquez had three bikes at his disposal for most of the day and then four by the end of play, with fellow Honda rider Cal Crutchlow given three to play with. Marquez’ completely black bike seemed to have a cover on the swingarm, while there was also some carbon reinforcement at the top of the chassis.

HRC test rider Stefan Bradl was also on track with two bikes to use, one in Repsol colours and one in his usual HRC livery. The German was also on track with EG 0,0 Marc VDS duo Alex Marquez and Xavi Vierge on Wednesday, and now continues his program.

Jorge Lorenzo, meanwhile, is still suffering from pain, reporting it was worse than at Silverstone. The five-time World Champion decided to end Day 1 slightly early as he continues his comeback from injury.

Michele Pirro – Misano MotoGP Test Day 1, 2019

At Ducati, Andrea Dovizioso was back on his GP19 in the afternoon session having been declared fit to ride earlier in the day, as were Quartararo and Joan Mir.

Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi said the Italian’s testing plan was cancelled as ‘DesmoDovi’ checks his physical condition on the bike after his Silverstone crash. Teammate Danilo Petrucci, though, was testing electronics and test rider Michele Pirro had new chassis parts and settings to try, with the fairing he used at the KymiRing seen out at Misano on Thursday. In addition, Petrucci, Pirro and Pramac Racing’s Jack Miller had the swingarm attachment back on their bikes.

At Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, it was a very positive day on the timesheets. Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco finished 6th and 8th respectively, with the duo both working towards the race at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

As always, KTM are constantly developing the RC16 and while working on race setup, the Austrian factory were also busy working on the chassis and engine. In the afternoon, test rider Dani Pedrosa took to the track before the MotoGP Legend does a full day of riding at the venue on Friday, with Zarco only riding on Thursday.

On the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 side, Miguel Oliveira’s test ended after two laps as the Portuguese rider was still feeling the pain from his Silverstone crash. He flew home on Thursday, with Hafizh Syahrin the sole machine for the squad on track from then on, aiming to regain his confidence on the RC16.

In the Team Suzuki Ecstar garage, it was a return to action for Joan Mir after his injury layoff. The Spaniard finished P9 on the timesheets with a best time of 1:33.763 to finish 0.767 off Quartararo’s lap.

Joan Mir

“I am happy to be back and feel the MotoGP thrill again! I’ve spent the last weeks at home, after the accident in Brno, in order to have time to recover. The decision to miss the British GP was the correct one, but I must say that I really missed being at the race. The team had huge success with Alex, it was pretty clear that the GSX-RR was well-suited to Silverstone’s layout. I felt frustrated being at home on my couch, but of course I felt proud and happy for Alex and the Team! Finally, I got back on the bike and my feeling is good, I did an effective rehab and recuperation job, and with the training last week I now feel almost 100% fit. Despite this, I arrived at the circuit this morning feeling like a rookie again, being aware that I needed to take it easy and take time to recover the feeling. I was impressed to see that I just needed two or three corners in the first run to start enjoying the feel like before. This allowed us to start testing some items and prepare for the Misano GP.”

Teammate and British GP winner Alex Rins was testing some settings for the race weekend, as well as checking parts on the swingarm, some electronics and a slightly different chassis they used in Brno to do some comparison work. Rins also suffered a crash at Turn 8 near the end of the morning session.

Alex Rins

“Honestly I’m very happy to already be back riding! After only 4 days I’m still feeling the thrill of the victory in Silverstone, and I’m fully enjoying these sensations on my Suzuki. Today we did a good job, we tried several options and worked on consistency. Finally, we didn’t have time to fit a soft tyre and try for the best lap, this is something we will have to work on tomorrow. We’re already thinking ahead to the San Marino GP, so we need to finalise a good setup for this tyre option as the white-striped tyre was the tyre choice of last year’s race.”

According to Aprilia Racing Team Gresini Technical Manager Romano Albesiano, his team were trying a very different setup on the RS-GP. In addition, both Aleix Espargaro and Andrea Iannone were working on electronics, engine braking, the swingarm and the chassis. Espargaro finished 12th fastest with a best time of 1:33.842, with Iannone claiming P17.

Reale Avintia Racing’s Karel Abraham left the circuit early as he was suffering from injury. The Czech rider was on the bike in the morning, with teammate Tito Rabat completing an impressive 74 laps in the afternoon. The Spaniard will complete a full day of testing on Friday.

In terms of tyres, Michelin provided the teams with the same allocation as they will have for the race weekend. In addition, the tyre manufacturer gave the riders the new rear that had previously been testing in Barcelona and Brno in a medium compound. And, there was also a new front casing, which has been developed to improve grip under braking. This was tested for the first time on Thursday.

That’s Day 1 complete at Misano, with plenty hustle and bustle up and down pitlane. They’ll be back out for another action-packed day on Friday

Rider critical after stolen bike crash

A 19-year-old male rider on a stolen motorcycle has been critically injured in a crash with two cars at Granville overnight.

NSW Police say the teenager was riding a stolen Suzuki motorcycle north on Blaxcell St, Granville, about 11pm last night (29 August 2019), when he attempted to overtake two vehicles.

“The motorcycle collided with a concrete island, and then a parked Toyota Yaris, which was then pushed into a Toyota Corolla,” police say.

“The rider was thrown to the roadway, and slid under the Yaris.”

The man was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition with head and limb injuries.

Subsequent inquiries revealed the motorcycle to be stolen.

Officers from Cumberland Police District continue with inquiries into the incident.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.

Here’s how you can protect your bike from being stolen

  • When riding home, make sure you are not being followed.
  • Stay alert for suspicious vans or trucks driving around late at night. These are used to transport stolen motorcycles.
  • Put a cover over your bike. It might slow down thieves and prevent theft of accessories. But make sure it isn’t a flashy lone with the brand name of the bike on it. That only entices thieves.
  • When riding in a group, park your bikes together.
  • Consider marking your bike in a unique way that could aid in recovery and therefore dissuade thieves.
  • At hotels or public parking spaces, try to park in view of parking lot security cameras and lights.
  • Install a motorcycle alarm and/or a hidden kill switch.
  • Buy a GPS tracking system that can track and relay your bike’s speed, location and direction.

IMS Launches an Extension of Discover the Ride, “Next Ride”

An evolution of the Discover the Ride program, Next Steps further aims to break down the barriers to becoming a proficient motorcycle rider.

Begin press release:

The Progressive® International Motorcycle Shows® (IMS), the industry leader for connecting powersports’ top brands with enthusiasts and buyers, today announced “Next Steps,” an extension of the company’s Discover the Ride program, which serves the entire motorsports community by breaking down the industry’s high barriers to entry. Following Discover the Ride’s successful implementation into the 2018/2019 IMS tour, which introduced over 2,000 potential riders to the experience of motorcycling for the first time, Next Steps represents an evolution of the program by helping new riders get trained as part of their ride to be formally licensed.

The IMS Next Steps program has been made possible in alliance with the Academy of Motorcycle Operation (AMO) – an organization that provides quality motorcyclist training in a safe, positive learning environment – in which AMO will offer an IMS-sponsored course October 19th and 20th at AMO’s Altadena, California location. The sponsored course, which will use the CHP Motorcyclist Training Course, is open to all attendees of the 2018 IMS Long Beach show who participated in Discover the Ride’s New Rider Course. IMS’ sponsorship includes full course compensation for four course participants as well as five discounted course tickets. Breakfast and lunch will also be provided by IMS throughout the two-day course for all students and instructors.

Registration for AMO’s IMS Sponsored Course is open now through September 20. To learn more about AMO’s IMS Sponsored Course and how to register, please contact Leah Boles at [email protected].

“We’re thrilled to team up with IMS to support the growth of the motorcycle industry,” said Charlie Fernandez, General Manager of AMO. “We always put safety first, and we also believe it’s important to learn to ride in a positive, supportive environment that’s a blast! We look forward to welcoming those who have participated in IMS’ Discover the Ride program, taking their experience from the course to the open road.”

In addition to contributing to the evolution of the Discover the Ride program, Next Steps represents a significant development for IMS in its progression as a brand. As the nation’s largest consumer motorcycle tour, IMS has served as an industry-focused organization for the past 38 years. In light of the significant losses the motorcycle industry has seen in recent years as millennials and Gen X’ers have not entered the market at the same rate as baby boomers are aging out, IMS has taken actions to help inspire new riders through creating easily approachable programs. Next Steps showcases how IMS is evolving to better support the growth of the industry by getting new riders on two wheels beyond their experience at IMS shows. As Discover the Ride helps riders identify that they want to ride, Next Steps takes the extra step of breaking down more barriers to entry by getting new riders formally licensed.

“It was amazing to watch so many new riders hop on a motorcycle for their very first ride during last year’s IMS tour through Discover the Ride,” said Tracy Harris, Senior Vice President, Progressive® International Motorcycle Shows®. “Now that so many of our Discover the Ride participants have expressed interest in getting their motorcycle license, we’re thrilled to be able to make that journey a little bit easier for them by offering comped and discounted courses through the Academy of Motorcycle Operation, a trusted organization committed to rider safety.”

Following the receiving of their motorcycle license, new riders can familiarize themselves with the world of motorcycling through NewTo2.com, an online platform within Discover The Ride dedicated to the continued education of the new generation of riders.

Suzuki’s returning 2020 lineup sees – wait for it – new colors! Although the V-Strom 650XT Adventure is kinda newish. However, what’s interesting here are the bikes not mentioned. There’s no GSX-S1000/S1000F, though they were certified for 2020 by CARB. Unless there’s an update to come, the Katana might be completely replacing it. The fact they still got certified may mean it was a late decision.

Also, there’s no Boulevard C90, C90T, M90, M50 or S40. Meaning there’s a much smaller cruiser lineup, but that’s not totally surprising considering Yamaha and Honda have been doing similar in recent years.

Begin press release:

After the dramatic and cutting edge unveiling that enthralled the industry during the International Motorcycle Shows (IMS) in Long Beach and New York, enthusiasts everywhere have been eager for details about the U.S. arrival of the new KATANA. Today, Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (SMAI) is excited to announce the new 2020 KATANA will officially arrive on American soil in two color schemes, adding a new Solid Black along with the Metallic Mystic Silver color that matches the look of the original 1982 version, and will be available in dealers this November at a price of $13,499.

Paying tribute to the original Katana while embracing its Japanese culture with key styling cues, the new KATANA combines its breathtaking look with modern, liter-class sportbike performance and a neo-retro flair that is ready to make its mark on the streets. This stunning motorcycle will attract a variety of riders, especially those who value owning a unique motorcycle that delivers an exciting riding experience and to seasoned riders who fondly remember the original Katana and will want their new KATANA ride linked to history.

In addition to the return of an icon, Suzuki also debuts a new V-Strom 650XT Adventure model for 2020 that comes equipped with high-quality, adventure-ready accessories. Plus, other 2020 carryover Street, Sport, Cruiser, DualSport, and Scooter models return with new colors and graphics to bring style along on every Suzuki ride.

The KATANA

Through its products, Suzuki has embraced its Japanese heritage and has found opportunities to celebrate beautiful, unique aspects of its society and nature. The new KATANA faithfully honors that commitment while finding a bold new expression for Suzuki technology and styling. The KATANA blends the proven performance of a long-stroke GSX-R1000 engine, the solid stability of the GSX-S1000 chassis, and an ergonomically comfortable riding position. The KATANA’s dramatic bodywork rests upon a twin-spar, aluminum alloy frame, and Superbike- type braced swingarm that provides great road-holding performance.

Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco finished 6th and 8th respectively, with the duo both working towards the race at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. As always, KTM are constantly developing the RC16 and while working on race setup, the Austrian factory were also busy trying items on the chassis and engine. In the afternoon, test rider Dani Pedrosa took to the track before the MotoGP™ Legend does a full day of riding on Friday, with Zarco only riding on Thursday. On the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 side, Miguel Oliveira’s test ended after two laps as the Portuguese rider was still feeling the pain from his Silverstone crash. He flew home on Thursday, with Hafizh Syahrin aiming to regain his confidence on the RC16.

Hopkins: “Marc never expected it”

“In 2010 I did a full season, crashed a lot. A lot. And then ever since, from then…there was a 450 class the year after in 2011 then took the step to STK600 in the British championship. And here’s another story with my dad, again, at this point I was probably quite cocky…I was 16. Thought I was an absolute hero, riding round on my STK600. Did no testing…a day at Mallory and I was like ‘YEAH! I’m ready to ride a 600’. Turned up at Brands Hatch Indy, the first round, and I was like ‘Dad, I’m gonna win this weekend.’ Again, he says, ‘You need to stop thinking like this because it’s going to end in a bad way.’ I put it third on the grid, and then the race was wet. I’d done no testing, I rode warm up in the wet and I was 23rd and I was thinking ‘Oh my god’. Come the race, I won it by ten seconds! Complete opposites.”
