Supercross reported to be restarting at Glendale in May

Final seven rounds could potentially take place within three-week period.

The 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season could resume within a month’s time, as Feld Motor Sports is reported to be assessing a plan that would see the gates drop in Glendale during the middle of May.

With professional sport currently shutdown globally due to the coronavirus pandemic, Supercross could become one of the first to resume in a bid to crown this year’s champions.

First tentatively reported by PulpMX’s Steve Matthes on Twitter over the weekend, rounds 11 through 17 to cap off the season could be held over a three-week period between mid-May into June. All seven events would be held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

In an unprecedented move, there would have to be multiple rounds per week without spectators in attendance if the series is to be completed within that condensed period. It’s unclear what personnel would be eligible to attend or if there would be strict quarantine measures in place to reduce the chances of anybody contracting COVID-19.

It was recently anticipated that Supercross would be on pause until September following the reduced 11-round Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, which is currently pencilled in to begin in the middle of June.

Glendale already hosted round four of the season in January, when Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen captured a clean-sweep of the Triple Crown event ahead of current points-leader Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki), who currently has a three-point lead in the 450SX standings following Daytona’s 10th round held on March 7.

An early return to competition would also have to include the remaining rounds of 250SX West and East, which have so far contested six and four rounds respectively. Defending champions Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Yamaha) and Chase Sexton (Geico Honda) lead those series.

Pandemic casts uncertainty around AUS-X Open plans

Pandemic casts uncertainty around AUS-X Open plans

Melbourne international up in the air as a result of coronavirus.

Mounting uncertainty is surrounding the AUS-X Open international supercross for 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the sport globally.

After moving to Marvel Stadium in Melbourne last November, the Victorian event is facing a series of obstacles if it is to take place this year.

Near 35,000 spectators packed the world-class indoor venue on debut at the end of last season, which doubled as the final rounds of both the Australian Supercross Championship and S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Championship.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused the suspension of sporting events worldwide, which has effectively put planning for the AUS-X Open event in a holding pattern and could also largely affect the AUS Supercross season altogether.

In addition to social distancing measures that prevent mass gatherings, international and domestic travel restrictions could still exist in the back-half of the year. The AUS-X Open is highly reliant on bringing riders from overseas and the tourism that it encourages, making spectator attendance critical.

Last year’s event was headlined by Americans Jason Anderson, AUS-X Open winner Justin Brayton and Joey Savatgy despite being injured in practice, as well as US-based Australians Chad Reed and Jett Lawrence. Riders of that calibre are leveraged to attract interstate fans as part of a partnership with the Victorian government.

Monster Energy Supercross in the US remains on hold at this point, with the most recent reports indicating that it could restart as soon as next month in a condensed schedule. Otherwise, rounds 11-17 of the American-based world championship would have to resume from mid-September following a delayed Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season.

Locally, the beginning of the MXstore MX Nationals season has been postponed until August and is expected to run its nine rounds into October if government restrictions ease in time to go ahead as tentatively planned. That schedule would force AUS Supercross to shuffle its series opener back to a later date.

Commercial rights-holder of the Australian Supercross Championship, AUS SX Holdings, is yet to address the status of the 2020 series publicly, still finalising possibilities that involve individual event promoters such as Troy Bayliss Events (TBE). AUS SX Holdings is also the parent company of the AUS-X Open.

At the end of February an update on the 2020 championship was circulated through the industry, featuring a draft calendar – now thought to be void – commencing in Queensland on the first weekend of October, before hosting rounds in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria for the AUS-X Open on 28 November.

Information regarding the opening three rounds remains limited, however, the New South Wales date falls inline with TBE’s plans to host a Wollongong round at WIN Stadium on 21 November alongside the Australian Motorcycle Festival once again.

The continuation of the two-round S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Championship had already been unclear prior to coronavirus when New Zealand was absent from that provisional AUS Supercross calendar only released behind closed doors. It’s understood that Auckland may instead be run on alternating years.

Yet further challenges could arise for the AUS-X Open’s immediate future, with the Australian Football League (AFL) certain to take priority as the owner of Marvel Stadium if football extends into the final months of the calendar year due to its current shutdown.

When contacted regarding the evolving situation today, AUS SX Holdings director Adam Bailey confirmed that organisers are continually monitoring the pandemic and associated consequences that are to form over the coming weeks and months. A final decision on the 2020 edition of AUS-X Open could potentially come as late as June.

AUS-X Open was launched in Sydney at the end of 2015, remaining at Qudos Bank Arena for four years before expanding to Melbourne in 2019 after striking a multi-year agreement with Visit Victoria, the tourism and major events agency of the state government.

Australian Junior Motocross Championship postponed

Australian Junior Motocross Championship postponed

Rockhampton-based event anticipated to be held later on during 2020.

Image: Foremost Media.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) has confirmed the postponement of the 2020 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship (AJMX) due to coronavirus.

Originally due to be contested at Rockhampton, Queensland, between 6-11 July, the decision has been made to delay the prestigious national event.

“With strict travel restrictions and border closures across Australia, both MA and Rockhampton and District Motocross Club felt it would be impossible for teams and riders to properly prepare and attend the event,” said MA CEO Peter Doyle.

“Together with the club we have made this tough decision and they should be congratulated for being proactive in looking to hold the 2020 KTM AJMX later this year.”

Instead, it is being suggested that the 2020 AJMX event will be scheduled during the term three school holidays, however, dates won’t be confirmed until later in the year when the situation becomes clearer.

Richardson completes solo 24-hour indoor cycle ride

Extraordinary achievement for multiple Australian SX2 champion.

Image: Foremost Media.

Two-time Australian SX2 champion Jackson Richardson completed a 24-hour indoor cycling challenge on Zwift over the easter weekend, riding a Concept2 BikeErg.

Richardson, 25, committed to the extraordinary challenge alongside Rockstar Energy Drink global motocross manager James Hanson in what became a world record attempt.

Richardson ended up completing a mammoth 534 kilometres in 24 hours, recording an average heart rate of 123bpm and burning 9737 calories over the duration. His ride commenced at 5:00pm on Saturday and went all the way through to Sunday afternoon.

“It started a couple of weeks ago when Dean Wilson did his first 100-mile road bike ride and we don’t even usually get a chance to attempt these sorts of things because our season is pretty much constantly going,” Richardson told MotoOnline. “When you do have time off, you normally want to take time off.

“James did it indoors on the Concept2 BikeErg then and when he did, I said I’d definitely do that, for sure. So I did the 100-mile ride and we spoke about what we were going to do next, which was initially going to be 200 miles, but I was on YouTube and came across this 24-hour indoor ride that a guy did in Britain.

“I sent it to James and he pretty much said ‘damn, so when are we doing it?’. I said ‘well, let’s do it next weekend’ and he agreed, so from that moment we were going to do it. We’d had a few at that point – but I wouldn’t say intoxicated – and were like… why not [laughs]?! There was no way in hell that I was going to quit.

“Before you know it, we were lining up to do a 24-hour ride. I can’t even explain it – it’s so gnarly. My first eight hours were solid, but from hour 10 to hour 15 it was just pure torture. My knees were hurting so bad, like my body was telling me to stop right now.

“All of a sudden I came good from hour 15 to hour 22 or so, when I pretty much got to the 500km mark and I was pretty happy with that. I took my shoes off with around two hours to go and just started turning the pedals over, just hanging on for dear life at that point. The pain was honestly indescribable.”

Hanson, meanwhile, achieved a new Concept2 BikeErg distance world record of 605km in 24 hours. A total of six people completed the entire ride including Victorian-based teenager Chandler Burns, who is a privateer in the MX Nationals and Australian Supercross Championship.

Richardson is in line to contest the entire 2020 AUS Supercross series, as well as potentially selected rounds of the MX Nationals once competition is scheduled to resume later this year. Check @jatzricho on Instagram for a complete rundown of his ride via hourly updates.

Start of MX Nationals season delayed further until August

Series organiser confirms latest status of motocross series.

Image: Foremost Media.

The 2020 MXstore MX Nationals has been delayed further, with series organiser Williams Event Management (WEM) confirming the championship is now due to commence in August.

WEM is intending to complete the scheduled nine-round series from August into October across six weekends as it navigates the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was announced last month that the MX Nationals would be commencing at the end of June with the Conondale round, however, that plan has now been shelved upon the latest advice from the Australian government.

An updated revised calendar is anticipated to be released toward the end of May, with WEM adamant that the MX Nationals championship will go ahead this year.

“We have been watching both the NRL and AFL regarding the comments they have been making around resuming their codes,” explained WEM director Kevin Williams in a statement released to the industry this afternoon.

“After listening to PM Scott Morrison this morning and trying to look at a realistic model, we are planning on a return to racing in August and running through into October. It is still our full intention in planning to run all nine rounds across the six weekends.

“We plan to release the actual calendar in late May, subject to social distancing announcements from the state and federal government. Racing in 2020 will definitely need some adjustment from all of us, but together we will be racing and the gates will drop.”

The postponed of the MX Nationals will require the Australian Supercross Championship to be pushed back, with most recent provisional plans released in February stating that the series would open on 3 October.

Cancelled Erzbergrodeo not to be rescheduled in 2020

Round three of WESS Enduro World Championship shelved altogether.

Image: Supplied.

The iconic Red Bull Erzbergrodeo has been cancelled for 2020 as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic that has brought to sport to a standstill.

Doubling as round three of the WESS Enduro World Championship, the Austrian event scheduled for 11-14 June won’t be staged at a later date.

Regarded as one of the world’s premier off-road motorcycle competitions, the Erzbergrodeo annually attracts 1800 riders from 40 nations to the Iron Giant.

The cancellation follows a recent decision made by the Austrian government. While they intend to ease certain restrictions regarding their COVID-19 lockdown measures, no mass gathering events will be permitted until July at the earliest.

This information follows the postponement of Extreme XL Lagares to 2-4 October and the recent cancellation of Trefle Lozerien AMV that was due to take place between 21-23 May.

Yamaha and Serco reach 20th anniversary milestone

Championship-winning collaboration celebrating two decades together.

Yamaha Motor Australia and Serco Motorsport are celebrating their 20th season of competing together in 2020.

The partnership became official in 2001, with the Queensland-based Serco organisation becoming the factory ‘Lites’ team in 2004.

“YMA and Serco have been in racing for the long haul and the commitment we have to each other and racing has been strong,” explained Serco owner Gavin Eales.

“We see a lot of teams come and go, but look at Yamaha’s consistency in racing, each team has been around for some time and built up a good knowledge and infrastructure base that can’t be replicated in just one or two seasons.”

Serco Yamaha’s first MX Nationals MX2 title was won by Cameron Taylor in 2005, with Jake Moss (2007), Luke Styke (2013), Luke Clout (2014) and Wilson Todd (2018) also capturing the 250 class crown. In addition, Brenden Harrison claimed the MXD title in 2013.

In the Australian Supercross Championship, the first title came when Styke completed the double in 2013, before Jackson Richardson went back-to-back during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Yamaha tops national motorcycle sales through first quarter

Highest-selling dirt bike the Yamaha WR450F to date in 2020.

Yamaha is the strongest-selling motorcycle brand of 2020 to date in Australia, figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) have confirmed.

A total of 17,977 motorcycles, ATVs and scooters have been sold so far, marking a minor 2.5 percent decline in comparison to 12 months ago.

The four main market categories were split, with ATV/SSV and off-road bikes showing an increase, while road bikes and scooters reported a decrease.

“The first three months of 2020 have seen many issues unfolding in the Australian market, with floods, drought, bushfires and, more recently, the coronavirus pandemic,” FCAI chief executive Tony Weber commented. “The market has been remarkably resilient given the circumstances.”

Taking over as market leader, Yamaha recorded a 21.1 percent share of the national market, followed by Honda with 20.3 percent and Kawasaki in third place at 11.3 percent.

Off-road motorcycles held their own with a 1.3 percent sales rise, in which Yamaha again topped the segment with a 27.8 percent share, followed by Honda with 24.3 percent and KTM at 20.7 percent.

It was the Yamaha WR450F that topped dirt bike sales overall, also featuring as leading enduro model at 260 models sold. KTM’s 300 EXC was second, the KTM 450 EXC-F third, KTM 350 EXC-F fourth and Yamaha WR250F fifth.

In terms of motocross models, the Honda CRF450R was highest-selling at 161 models sold, followed by the Yamaha YZ250F, KTM 250 SX-F, Yamaha YZ450F and Honda CRF250R.
