Dutch GP ‘one of the most difficult Valkenswaard wins’ declares Herlings

Red Bull KTM rider earns victory on countback in the Netherlands.

Jeffrey Herlings says the weekend’s Dutch MXGP was one of the most difficult wins of his career at the Valkenswaard venue after being challenged by reigning world champion Tim Gajser (Team HRC) all weekend.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing contender, who’s been notoriously dominant in the sand especially in his home country, mustered up a 2-1 scorecard to be credited the overall on countback, benefiting from an error by Gajser in the final outing to stand atop the podium.

“This was one of the most difficult Valkenswaard wins,” Herlings declared. “Tim did a great job but it was important for us to think about the overall than the 1-1 and to not lose points.

“This was a good GP for us. Going to Argentina I hope we can find some good weather – it has been two in a row now with rain! We’ll try to make the best of the situation there and go again for a podium spot.”

Herlings holds a nine-point advantage over Gajser as the MXGP World Championship heads to Argentina on 22 March.

Career-best WMX moto finish for O’Hare in the Netherlands

KTM-mounted Australian 11th overall at the second round.

Western Australian TJ O’Hare stormed to a top 10 moto result at Valkenswaard’s second round of the 2020 Women’s Motocross World Championship last weekend, marking a career-best performance so far on the world stage.

Following a 12th overall placing at Matterley Basin’s season-opener a week ago, the KTM Diga Junior Racing rider strengthened her championship ranking by racing to a 15-8 scorecard for 11th overall at the Dutch venue.

The result moves O’Hare to 10th in the series standings, which is currently led by reigning champion and New Zealander Courtney Duncan (Kawasaki).

“I was a bit too stressed on Saturday I think,” O’Hare stated. “Halfway through the race I calmed myself down because I made some many mistakes but things improved from there. After they flattened the track it was much easier to keep the speed today.

“I’m pumped about that eighth place in the second race moto, my best world championship result ever. For the moment I’m quite pleased with my speed I just need to build more consistency into my riding to eliminate the mistakes. If I can achieve that, even the top six would be within reach.”

Compatriot Hannah Bagnall (Honda) contested her second-ever round in the WMX class at the weekend, winding 38th overall.

Rea’s Phillip Island helmet raises over $29,000 for bushfire relief

One-off Phillip Island WorldSBK helmet goes to Irish bidder.

Five-time WorldSBK champion Jonathan Rea has raised over $29,000 AUD for bushfire relief in Australia after auctioning a one-off helmet that he wore at Phillip Island’s opener.

Rea has joined a list of motorsport stars to raise money for the country after wildfires ravaged the east coast of Australia this summer, with the amount raised going towards BlazeAid – a charity of volunteers working with farmers in bushfire affected areas.

Designed by legendary Italian designer Aldo Drudi at the request of Rea and his Australian wife Tatia, who grew up on the Island, the helmet is a colourful art piece with lyrical renditions of koalas, kangaroos and flowers and symbols from the Australian bush.

“It was so difficult being at home in Northern Ireland and watching the fires from afar,” said Rea. “We have a beautiful mountain property in Wandiligong that came under threat with the fire burning in Abbeyard near Bright in the Alpine region in North East Victoria.

“My wife Tatia’s parents were staying there when police told them they should vacate. We felt helpless and scared, so I decided that I would race in Australia with a special helmet design and sell it after to donate the money to a worthwhile cause.

“The WorldSBK organisation got involved with BlazeAid and with this platform, we can auction the helmet. When I spoke to Aldo, who has designed my helmets for the last few years, and we came up with this cool concept.”

Hand injury benches MX2 World Championship rookie Todd

Australian suffers broken fingers in first turn incident.

A first turn pile-up at the MXGP of the Netherlands on Sunday has resulted in a hand injury for Australian Wilson Todd, which will force him to sit on the sidelines in the coming weeks.

The DRT Kawasaki rider, who overcame a mechanical issue in Saturday’s qualification race, was involved in a multi-rider incident at the opening turn, suffering multiple broken fingers in his right hand.

It’s not yet clear how long Todd will be sidelined for, however it’s likely he’ll at least miss the next stop of the MX2 World Championship in Argentina on 22 March.

“Not so great weekend for me,” Todd stated. “Bike trouble in qualifying gave me last gate pick today, [then I] joined in on the first turn pile up and [was] ran over. Some broken fingers and cuts – we will be back.”

The injury comes as a bitter blow for the two-time Australian champion in his rookie season on the world stage.

Beaton shy of the podium at Dutch grand prix

Beaton shy of the podium at Dutch grand prix

Australian moves to third in the MX2 World Championship standings.

Image: Supplied.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton finished just shy of the podium for the second-straight weekend at Valkenswaard’s second round of the MX2 World Championship.

The Tasmanian was challenging for a podium position in race one before an error saw him relegated down the field, however he was able to charge back to sixth.

He rebounded strongly in moto two, putting on a fantastic performance while ditching his goggles in brutally sandy conditions, crossing the line in P2 for fourth overall – just two points behind third.

“It’s been another good GP for me, but like at Matterley I’m a little disappointed not to be on the podium,” Beaton stated. “But that’s on me as I made a mistake in the first moto. Overall, my riding’s good, I just have to keep it on two wheels to get it on the podium.

“The sand is so soft and heavy here at Valkenswaard that a small mistake can quickly become a big mistake, but it’s been good to show that my speed in the sand is good. I gated really well and felt good in the first race and went from third to second in a couple of corners and started to chase [Tom] Vialle.

“I then made a small mistake and ran off track slightly, hitting a sign and tipping over. I dropped some places, but I was pleased enough to finish with a decent result. In the second race there was a crash right in front of me, but I still got a decent start.

“I really focused on not making any mistakes and although it was tough with vision near the end of the race, I got a great second place result, which was a positive way to end the GP.”

Beaton now sits third in the championship rankings ahead of the third round, which is scheduled for 22 March at Neuquen in Argentina.

Gardner ‘never gave up’ in impressive Qatar comeback

Gardner ‘never gave up’ in impressive Qatar comeback

SAG Racing Team rider charges to fifth at round one.

Image: Supplied.

Australian Remy Gardner says he ‘never gave up’ after putting in an impressive comeback at Qatar’s opening round of the 2020 Moto2 World Championship yesterday.

The SAG Racing Team contender qualified strongly to start from the second row in position six, however the opening laps saw him relegated to outside of the top 10.

In a spirited ride, Gardner charged his way back into the mix, moving up to fifth while displaying podium pace, although he ultimately ran out of time to cross the line in P5.

“Qualifying could have been so much worse following my two crashes and considering how we ended the opening day,” Gardner reflected. “I was riding with a bit of pain in my back and ribs so to put it on the second row for the opening round was good damage limitation you could say.

“I didn’t make the perfect lap, but Sunday is when it counts. We had had good pace all weekend and, in the test, so I was confident for the race. We lost a lot of time in the first ten laps and I dropped all the way down to 12th, but I never gave up and kept fighting and in the last few laps I thought we had a shot for the podium.

“One more lap and it could have been a trophy, but I can’t be unhappy with the work done, the team did a great job and it feels like a podium even if it’s not. Already looking forward to the next race, wherever it is and to pushing hard as ever.”

The next stop of Moto2 is scheduled for 5 April at Circuit of the Americas, although uncertainty surrounds it amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
