Team Australia applying no pressure on MXoN rookie Duffy

Raceline KTM Thor rider primed for Assen this weekend.

Recently-crowned Pirelli MX Nationals MXD champion Regan Duffy says there’s no additional pressure from Team Australia has he makes his Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) debut this weekend at just 17 years of age in the Open category.

The Raceline KTM Thor rider was drafted into the squad just two weeks ago following the withdrawal of MX2 World Championship regular Mitch Evans (Team Honda 114 Motorsports), the Queenslander currently recovering from a list of ongoing injuries sustained throughout the year.

Duffy, who was racing the Australian Junior Motocross Championship this time last year, dominated in the MXD category in 2019, and made a glowing performance at the Manjimup 15,000 aboard the 450, where he defeated a number of the country’s top premier class contenders.

“It’s going to be tough,” Duffy stated to MotoOnline.com.au. “From what I’ve heard, there are two jumps that you get a break on, and the rest is deep sand and getting drawn into the dirt. I like the long motos and I’ve always been pretty good with that, hopefully I can just keep my head and ride like I know how to.

“It’s going to be a good experience, and I’ve got no pressure or anything – the team knows I’m there filling the spot, so it’s not like they want me to go out and get a top five as Mitch probably would – it’s cool like that.”

The Western Australian will join three-time MX Nationals MX1 champion Dean Ferris (Raceline Recover8 KTM) and Kyle Webster (Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing) in the green and gold at Assen in the Netherlands.

Davies optimistic with improved Ducati V4 R package

Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider hopeful to maintain form this weekend in France.

Chaz Davies says he’s feeling optimistic for the remainder of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) after his recent surge in form is a result of an improved Ducati Panigale V4 R package.

The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider, who has signed on for 2020 with the outfit, struggled to come grips with the all-new machine at the beginning of the year, however has recently scored an array of podium finishes.

“I feel good for Magny Cours because the podium at Portimao has actually given me optimism for the rest of the season and I feel that it proves we have a pretty good package with the bike now,” Davies explained. “The French track has been quite kind to me in the past so we’ll try and get some good results there.

“I’m not really looking for any particular place in the championship now – of course it’s nice to be in the hunt for the top 3 but my goal is just to be competitive on the remaining circuits until the end of the year.”

The WorldSBK series resumes this weekend at Magny-Cours in France for round 11 of the series.

Top 10 funniest motorcycle ads

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen motorcycle commercials on TV, let alone something clever, inspiring and funny, so we have collected our favourite funniest video bike ads over the years.

Before we get into the funniest ads, we would like to pose a question: Have changing attitudes and the Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) wiped out funny motorcycle advertising?

Last year we checked the ASB site for complaints about motorcycle ads and found several that slammed ads because they were sexist, the riders did illegal stunts or they weren’t wearing the correct safety gear.

Ok, so we understand that safety and legality are important, but it just kills the thrill and fun of motorcycling.

There have been no complaints since. Quite frankly we haven’t seen any motorcycle ads since that have inspired us either.

Is this why there is such a downturn in motorcycle sales worldwide, particularly among younger people?

Motorcycling is not only fun, it can sometimes be funny! And humour is one of the best tools for selling.

So we have compiled our list of favourites and hope motorcycle companies start tickling our funny bones again.

Top 10 funniest motorcycle ads:

4 Impossible Dream

5 Table cloth trick

6 Aprilia replies

7 Get a real bike

Aprilia then ups the ante with this cracker about wankers.

Red Bull KTM signs Hofer for 2020 MX2 World Championship

Red Bull KTM signs Hofer for 2020 MX2 World Championship

Austrian manufacturer completes its line-up for next season.

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has signed 17-year-old Rene Hofer for the 2020 MX2 World Championship, as dual world champion Jorge Prado graduates to the premier class.

The Austrian, who will race alongside Tom Vialle next year, impressed with three wildcard MX2 appearances in 2019 in what was his first full year of competition aboard the KTM 250 SX-F, while he was ranked fourth in his maiden EMX250 campaign.

“I’m super excited,” Hofer stated. “We’ve really worked for this over the last couple of years and my dreams are coming true right now. We were not sure if it would happen for 2020 but I showed some good speed in the second half of the season and also that I could compete in good positions in MX2.

“I felt confident in the class from the very first time, even if the weekend routine is pretty different from EMX. I’m so grateful to be able to have the chance to ride for the most successful team in the GP paddock and to have the best racing people around me as well as being able to learn from Tom.

“I’ve trained with him a few times now and he’s a really nice guy. He had an unbelievable rookie season and I think we can put in some solid preparation work over the winter to be ready for 2020. I turn 18 next year and I know I am ready for this step. For sure the result in Imola was very good but I will be hungry for more and I will bring in the very best effort from my side.

“I cannot forget to thank all the people who have helped me reach this stage of my career and who have helped shape me as a rider and as a human. I cannot wait to start work for 2020 but first I need to focus on this weekend!”

KTM’s vice president of off-road Robert Jonas added: “Rene has quickly moved up through the levels of the sport and he made sure that it was hard to ignore his progress in 2019 and his first with the 250 SX-F. After two seasons in the 125s and just one in EMX250 he was already pushing for a grand prix opportunity and showed us what he can do.

“We really like the mentality and the determination of this kid and we’re proud to be able to bring another rookie into our factory team for 2020. He’s Austrian and some might think this would be an advantage but it also comes with pressure, and we wanted to make sure that Rene would be able to handle this chance.

“I can remember this situation from my own experience and we have no doubts about Rene. 2020 will be a learning year but, together with Tom, it means we have exciting and youthful talent behind an amazing strong MXGP line-up.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will field Prado alongside multi-time world champions Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP next year.

Industry boss is learning to ride to work

Putting his body where his mouth is, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries boss Tony Weber is learning to ride in time to take part in the third annual Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week (7-11 October 2019).

When it was announced earlier this month, Tony said “we are traditionally a country mad for motorcycles”.

Yet, he admitted he is not a rider: “When the motorcyclists I know start explaining their love for it, I have to admit I am tempted to ask for lessons.”

Learning to ride

Tony is certainly a man of his word with his first training session at motoDNA Riders Academy, Sydney Motorsport Park.

“I was hesitant at first, but I got a feel for it quickly. I must admit, now I see why my colleagues and motorcycle industry members get so excited about motorcycle riding,” he says.

“It’s one of the great experiences – it’s just so enjoyable! I can’t wait to take it to the next stage.Tony Weber prepares to learn to ride

“Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week is a brilliant opportunity for riders to share their passion and make sure their bikes are prepared for the summer.

“I would encourage anyone to get out there and have a go, take your first steps as a rider. It’s just magic.”

MotoDNA founder and CEO Mark McVeigh says Tony took to the bike quickly.

“He was unassisted in under an hour. Initially he was a bit nervous, but once he got a feel for the bike, I could see him falling in love with riding, just like I did, just like everyone does when they try it,” Mark says.

We suggest riders encourage their friends to start learning to ride during Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week which also corresponds with the NSW Motorcycle Awareness Month

Ride to work

Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week aims to unite riders, celebrate taking the ‘long way home’, and showcase the small moments in a journey only riders notice.

The event is an initiative of the FCAI, supported by Aprilia, BMW Motorrad, Can-AM BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Husqvarna, Indian Motorcycles, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Vespa and Yamaha.

To support the week, a selection of Australia’s motorcycle dealerships will offer a free Ride-Thru 10-point inspection of their bike to make sure it is safe and road ready.

Riders are also encouraged to share their favourite sections of their long way home on FacebookInstagram and the official website.

Joe Rider vests make drivers aware of riders

Riders will be wearing Joe Rider vests during Motorcycle Awareness Month in October to make Sydney drivers aware of how many riders are on the road.

Motorcycle Council of NSW chairman Kevin “Trip” Henry says their road safety campaign will encourage drivers to look out for ‘Joe’ on their way to work.

There will be daily $50 fuel vouchers offered as incentive prize for those who identify the correct location of a Joe Rider through the MCC NSW Facebook page.

Joe Rider competition

The competition will run from 1-4 October 2019 and be backed by a radio advertising campaign on KIIS FM and Edge FM.

All entrants will also go in the draw to win a $500 Red Balloon Getaway voucher sponsored by Shannons Insurance.

“This competition is a great way to remind drivers to look out for motorcyclists,” Kevin says.

“By being diligent drivers on our roads, lives will be saved.

“Sixty-one percent of multi-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle are caused by the other driver failing to see or give way to the rider.”

“In motorcycle crashes where the other vehicle was at fault, it was found that 81% were private cars and 9% were a light truck, so if we can get this safety message to car drivers, we can hopefully prevent many accidents.

“Between 2008 and 2016 motorcycle registrations increased by 54%, and car registrations up 21%. There are significantly more motorcycles for drivers to look out for.”Commute traffic lane filtering speed wet NSW sydney police commuting

Regional message

Kevin says they are also targeting the Central West region of NSW this year with a radio campaign leading up to the Two Wheels to Wellington motorcycle ride.

“Regional NSW is prone to motorcycle accidents and fatalities – with 27.5% of all motorcycle fatalities occurring in regional NSW up to August 2019,” he says.

To keep the momentum going throughout the month, MCC of NSW are also sponsoring several motorcycle events.

They include the Pink Ribbon Ride on 20 October in Western Sydney to raises funds for breast cancer and Breakfast Torque on 27 October at Heathcote.

“Events are a great way for motorcyclists to show their love of riding with friends and family, increases the road users’ awareness of motorcyclists and raise money for worthy causes,” Kevin says.

The event also corresponds with the third annual Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week from 7-11 October.

MIC: Economic Data Shows Motorcycling, ATV Riding, Side-by-Side Driving Among Nation’s Largest Outdoor Recreation Activities

As far as recreational outdoor activities go, motorcycling is high up there.

Begin press release:

Motorcycling, ATV riding, and side-by-side driving are among the country’s five largest traditional or conventional outdoor recreation activities, when ranked by economic output, according to data released last week by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

This was the first time that the BEA provided preliminary data on economic contribution in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, demonstrating how important outdoor recreation is to both local business as well as the nation’s gross domestic product.

And, it’s a growth sector.

According to the BEA release, its Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account “shows that inflation-adjusted (real) GDP for the outdoor recreation economy grew by 3.9 percent in 2017, faster than the 2.4 percent growth of the overall U.S. economy. Real gross output, compensation, and employment all grew faster in outdoor recreation than for the economy as a whole.”

The bureau defines “conventional” outdoor recreation as activities done for pleasure, such as camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing, and involving some physical effort.

The Five Largest Conventional Outdoor Recreation Activities by Economic Output

“We have long known that motorcycling, ATV riding and side-by-side driving are major contributors to the economy, to our country’s GDP, in so many ways,” said Tim Buche, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. “We boost local economies, too, and not just through powersports dealers and retailers. Our enthusiasts book hotel stays, pay park fees, buy food, supplies, and other gear they need for all sorts of great outdoor adventures. All of that makes them, and our industry, a powerful economic engine that merits the attention of policymakers and those who manage public lands.”

The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable is a coalition of outdoor recreation trade associations and the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association are members. Looking at the BEA’s latest report, the ORR noted some additional highlights:

  • Outdoor recreation accounts for 2.2 percent of U.S. GDP, creating $778 billion in gross output supporting 5.2 million jobs.
  • Outdoor recreation is responsible for a larger share of GDP than many major industries, including chemical products manufacturing, farming and ranching, mining, and utilities.

“[The] release of state data is a significant step forward for the entire outdoor recreation industry,” said Jessica Wahl, executive director of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “This second full year of national data – together with prototype state-level numbers – proves that our industry is a driving economic force across the country. ORR will continue to work with Congress, federal agencies, state governments and others to ensure that everyone has access to our public lands and waters and that our nation’s outdoor infrastructure can sustain and grow healthy communities and healthy economies.”

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers, distributors, dealers and retailers of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, ROVs, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts, accessories and related goods and services, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at mic.org.
